5.1 sound instead of stereo

My camera (Sony HDR-SR11) records the sound in normal stereo.
Also my prroject is regarded to be in stereo.
However when I import my footage, 5.1 tracks are created.
The properties of my clips are on the attachment.
I should do something wrong, but I can't discover what.
Where am I supposed to make a mistake?
Rob

Hi, Harm.  You helped me once before and I'd like to ask if you could help me again.   I have two concerns:
1) I did an interview on video not long ago, using a Sony PD 150 camcorder.  When it came to edit the video footage and I imported it into CS4, I found that the sound was a little low.  I couldn't increase the volume enough the usual way (by raising that little line on the sound track in the timeline) and was wondering if there was another way to do that.
2) I checked the inteview footage the other day and found that, whereas the video is OK, the sound has disappeared completely!  The line on the soundtrack in the timeline, the one that is usually squiggly with the sine wave, is now completely flat.  Do you know how or why that happened and is there any way to get the sound back?
Many thanks!
Lewis

It should not be a problem, only optically, but you can try to just delete the 5.1 tracks.

Can I use a Bluetooth headphone/microphone for capture sound instead of normal iPhone mic when shooting video?
The sound when I record video is not so good, so I'm trying to use the Bluetooth headphone/microphone to capture a person voice but not know which setting to use.

    Hi Robert
Thanks for answering. I didn't know where to post other than the bluetooth forum which is relatively quiet and had no answers forthcoming.
Yes the voice isn't reaching the amp although it is registering on the input bar in the Sound System Prefs, just won't "play through" as it were. I can't see how it could be done I was just hoping someone might see something I am missing.
It seems a shame that you can't do it as iTunes on an old iBook makes a good juke box for DJ'ing and with everything becoming wireless these days it seems sensible that you could cut that one last wire.

  • Encore transcoded audio into mono instead of stereo!!

    OK here is my workflow:
Shot 1080p video on Sony XDCAM PMW-EX1 with stereo audio track. Imported footage using Sony XDCAM Transfer (makes .mov files). If you open the .mov files in QT Player they show as having Track 1 - Video, Track 2 - Audio (left), Track 3 - Audio (right). I then used QT player on most of these files to set in and out points and then copy the selections, saving them into referenced movie files. (Did not do this on all of them though). In QT Player, all of these movie files play fine. Dragging the movie files into Peak 5.2 you can see they have a Track 2 and Track 3 for the audio (stereo!).
Then I dragged all my movies (referenced and non) into Adobe Encore CS4 and selected everything and transcoded it all. (I dragged it to the timeline befoer transcoding.) The timeline shows just one audio track. It's the audio track that appeared when I dragged and dropped the video from the bin into the timeline. Should I have made a second audio track before dragging and dropping?
Because when I did Build, and it made the BMDV folder, then I burned that to a BD-R, and played it, it's in mono. All the AC3 files are in mono (left channel only). Why would that happen? Shouldn't it automatically get both channels of the sound and do stereo, or warn you before burning if it's in mono?

You are correct, sir. I'm surprised the software is not intelligent enough to recognize that. It really should be drag-and-drop simple. It should at least ask the user, "do you want to discard one audio track?"
To solve this I tried the following: go into Final Cut and export the audio as stereo AIF, then drop that in. I wanted to avoid having to re-transcode all the video, but when I did this, it decided to anyway, then had an error. So I deleted the transcode folders. Then I went to transcode again and now it's saying "Error Creating Transcode Folder" or whatever. Sigh.
This program just seems too finicky and not very robust. I'm going to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 7 and just use Compressor 3.5, which finally can export a BDMV folder that I can just burn to whatever.

  • Asha 210 produces headset-quality sound instead of...

The phone, Asha 210, thinks that my earphones is a headphones, and it even show the symbol of a headphone without a headset attachment on the home page of the phone, but it still produces the sound similar to a headset. Without changing it, the earphones will produce sounds at a lower volume and without any bass.
In my opinion, there may be two possible causes to this. First, the phone thinks that the earphones is a headphone but it produces a headset-quality sound instead. The other, which is more reasonable, is that the earphone with headset capability is not compatible with the phone.
Of course, I have tried to search the button to change it but there is not any on the phone. The only way to solve it is to hold down the headset button on the earphones or tape it, but that would not do justice to the problem with the phone and its audio system.
Is it because that Asha 210 is not compatible with headsets? Or is there a button to change what the phone identifies the earphones as (from headset to headphones, despite saying that it already identifies it as headphones)?
Update: I rewrote my question again as it is very misleading. I did not delete this so that others will know what the answer may be. The other thing is that I think I may have thought that the enchancement option is available for the Asha 210; it turns out to be an option for the E63 model. As for the Asha 210, I am quite certain that there is no option to manually change in between function for headset or headphones on the phone. Thanks for reading.

  • Why Does FCE capture DV audio as dual mono instead of stereo?

FCE captures DV audio as dual mono audio files instead of a single stereo audio file. You can see this if you "Show Movie Properties" in Quicktime. Files I captured in Premiere 6 years ago have a single stereo file. The problem is that the new dual mono format for DV won't play on the Final Cut Pro 3.04 installed on my wife's G4 (OS 10.4.11, Quicktime 7.6.2). FCP 3.04 doesn't see any audio for these dual mono files though it will play the video. It won't even create an audio waveform. But FCP 3.04 plays the older stereo audio clips captured in Premiere just fine. And if I export the dual mono files out of QT as a stereo file, then FCP 3.04 will play them just fine.
This lack of backward compatibility is quite frustrating. I can't seem to find a setting in FCE that will capture audio as a single stereo file. Why isn't NTSC DV always stereo? I guess maybe they had to go dual mono to facilitate surround sound panning in 5:1 or something. If nobody knows how to do this in FCE, I guess I'll just capture in FCP 3.04. I spent the better part of a day figuring out this hidden little tidbit. The lesson is don't try to go back!! We must always accelerate forward into newer versions and formats.

The problem is in your wife's machine. She is using a version of the OS and QuickTime that are much too new for the version of the software she's using. She really not not be using an OS newer than 10.4.10 and QT should 7.2 or earlier.
Yes. I was beginning to suspect that this was at the root cause of my issue. Thanks for the info. Frankly, my wife needs to buy a new Intel iMac so we'll both be able to work on the video I'm dumping. I had FCP 3 lying around from years ago and it's the only thing that might have worked on her old G4 AGP, so I thought I'd give it a try.

  • 3d sound or six stereo speak

i just got a durabrand 80 watt 5. home theater system. When i went to connect it to my sb li've 24bit sound card i found that instead of the usual green orange and black 3.5mm cords there was only one green one
does this mean that i am stuck with 3 sets of stereo speakers or is there a way to get 3d sound

I think that it had one regular headphone size jack for input and also a component video input, but i got mad and returned it to Walmart. I then went on Amazon and bought a set of 5. Creative Inspire T5400 speakers and never regretted it. The Quality was much better and you get <EM>real</EM> surround sound.
Advice for anyone who is looking for speakers.
    DON'T BUY DURABRAND SPEAKERS

  • How can i connect my Imac sound to my stereo receiver speakers and not disconnect the computer's speakers?

I find lots of confusing answers re how to connect my Imac to my stereo receiver, and I aldso want to avoid cutting of the Imac's speakers entirely when the sound goes to the stereo receiver and thsu to the larger speakers. Is there a way to switch between them, or can i keep them running simultaneously, which is what I'd really prefer? What do i need to go to Radio Shack to purchase?
FYI, I have a 27" desktop Imac purchased 3 months ago, running Mountain Lion, and the receiver I want to connect to is an Onkyo TX-8050, wityh lotys of available ports in back - digital, universal, ethernet, and many rca ports "in."

I think this should work, although the description doesn't appear to cover this use. Call Griffin to confirm.

  • Mono a1,a2 instead of stereo a1+a2

My FCP project has its sound in two separate mono channels a1 and a2 (in Viewer tabs). When I close the mono tab, a stereo tab appears but it carries no signal. Now I cannot treat the two channels both at the same time in raising and lowering gain (with the pen tool). How can I combine these two to act as a stereo pair?
    Hans van der Meer

    To create a stereo pair:
1 Select a pair of mono audio clip items in the Timeline. (Use the Command key to select the second item, if necessary.) If you click one item of a linked pair, the other item is also selected.
2 Choose Modify > Stereo Pair (or press Option-L).
The stereo pair indicators appear on the selected clip items in the Timeline.
If the clip items you want to make into a stereo pair have different durations, the clip items are trimmed to the region where they both overlap. The levels, pan settings, and filters that were applied to the top clip are applied to both, and the clip attributes from the bottom clip are ignored.

  • Creating 5.1 surround sound out of stereo audio

    Hi,
I'm new to surround sound editing, so for the past few weeks I've been searching through internet how to create suround sound for my movie. I have a whole movie already done in Premiere Pro 5 (every scene in it's own squence). In these sequences I have stereo audio clips that  create a complete stereo sound, but since this movie is going to go on film festivals I have to create surround sound.
Through my reasearch I came across many explanations of how to create it, but the more I read the more it confused me so I decidet to ask for help on this forum.
    1. Is it posible to create surroundsound directly out of stereo audio (I know that the sequences that you are working in has to be set to surround sound) that I have in first, second and third chanel, that have  surround sound controls above them in Audio mixer?
    2. I know that  in 5.1 chanels you can only inport 5.1 surround sound tracks. My question is, do I have to take each stereo clip, transform it in mono clip and then create a stereo clip out of that mono clip?
    3. Did I completly miss the whole concept of creating surround sound and that I would have to do it diferently?
    Thanks for helping out, Jaggarjack

To output to DD 5.1 SS, you will need an Encoder, like the Minnetonka Audio SurCode DD5.1 SS plug-in.
You can also use Audition (do not know about SB) to create 6-channel files (usually WMA w/ either 5, or 6 discrete channels, depending on how you handle the LFE). Still, to use such a set of files with Audio-Visual material, you will need an Encoder. Minnetonka Audio has others, like the SurCode DD 5.1 SS stand-alone and the DTS stand-alone.
If you have disassembled the original audio streams into mono sources, you can create faux 5.1 SS, and with a little work, it can be quite convincing. The 5.1 controls in a 5.1 Master Project, can be very useful for "creating" your sound stage. You can also use those to feed certain frequencies from other sources to the LFE, and to the Center channel. With good stereo in the Front speakers, you should already have a decent phantom Center, and can punch that up even more.
I would recommend starting with the Help File for "Surrond Sound," to get the basics down, plus the mechanics in PrPro. HERE is a little sample. You might also want to see the links in this PrPro-Wiki Search for more material.
The Recording Academy's Producers & Engineers' Recommendations for Surround Sound Production is useful paper.
    I recommend three books:
Surround Sound, Second Edition: Up and Running, Tomlinson Holman (cannot find my copy for ISBN)
Instant Surround Sound, Jeffery Fisher, CMP Books ISBN 1-57820-246-9
Basics of Video Sound, Des Lyver, Focal Press ISBN 0-240-51561-7
That would be a good start.
    Happy reading, and up-mixing,
    Hunt

  • USB Sound Card: dual stereo output?

I recently bought a Channel Audio Sound Card Adapter which would channel sound through my computer's USB port. Pretty standard it would allow for Stereo headphone out and microphone input:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-Virtual-7-1-Channel-Audio-Sound-Card-Adapter-3 D-for-XP-Windows-7-Mac-/321480885369?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_SoundCar ds&hash=item4ad9c10479
I opted for it so I could control from my menu bar where the sound was being directed: http://www.cnet.com/uk/how-to/how-to-quickly-change-audio-output-in-os-x/
However I do not need the microphone in, but do need a second stereo headphone out and would like to know if:
    a) A USB adapter exists that will encompass two stereo headphone ports, not a microphone?
    b) Whether OS X will be able to distinguish the two so I can control which headphones are in use at any one time from a single USB Sound Card dongle? (note: I am not looking for a Y splitter)
I have read of some OS X software called "SoundSource" from RogueAmoeba, but this has been retired - it would allow for me to flip the microphone port so it would transmit sound, even through the microphone socket, I might have been able to get around it like that? Is there anything else that may be available that could do the job?
Also, I was wondering, if I had to get another USB Sound Card, could I use a USB splitter so that I could plug two USB spun cards into one port and with no loss of quality? USB ports are a premium on my computer.

  • Can't get Surround Sound from a stereo sound file

I have tried multiple times to get the surround panner to work on any of the stereo clips that are included with STP2, but it stays in stereo. If I put the surround panner all the way to anything but the left or right channel I get NO sound. Surround sound is working fine for clips that are 5.1.
Anyone have any clues as to why this is not working?
If I pick a audio clip that is surround, the panning works and sounds fine. But looking at the demo movie on Apples website, it should be no problem to put a stereo file into any of the surround speakers.
I got a new HD coming and I am going to install everything fresh.. OS and all and see if that fixes things.

I'm not sure if this helps because I new to this having only picked up Soundtrack Pro for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but I was having the same problem until I moved the widner on the Surround sound HUD to full (fully to the right). Suddenly my stereo went into all 5 channels! (I'm trying to make 5.1 from stereo at the moment) Now I could move the puck and the sound would go to that speaker. But yeah... it's something i don't see in the manual and had to figure out for myself. Only took two weeks...

  • How to export project with dual monaural instead of stereo?

I have a very large project with many audio tracks and they are all adjusted right now so they sound right on a balanced stereo system, but I want to make sure the final sound isn't corrupted by someone having their channels adjusted unevenly, so I've decided to sacrifice any stereo effect and output dual identical monaural channels...but I'm not sure the easiest way to do it. Is using Quicktime Conversion and checking "monaural" a way? Or is there someway to do it inside the program...but not irreversibly?
I appreciate any help anybody can give me.

I was over at a friends yesterday I had given him a copy of my dvd and he had said the sound was horrible..that in many places the bkgd music totally overpowered the dialogue and in other places in the program it was just the opposite. Sure enough, he was right. It wa horrible. And I easily discovered the reason. He has a large screen HD TV and his teenagers have the audio from the dvd player hooked to a stereo and had the levels and the equalization set totally different for each of the two tracks.
And I think some other people at one time or another do indeed disturb the balance of their stereo without even realizing it.
Stereo is 2 channels, Left & Right. What could any
user do to 'corrupt the sound' other than change the
Left-Right balance control on their amp, which most
    people never touch.

  • HDV audio is 2 mono tracks instead of stereo

When capturing my HDV video from my HDR-HC1 cam the audio is being captured as two mono tracks instead of a 2-channel stereo track. Does anyone know how to fix this and get the stereo?

    Just out of curiosity... Why?<<</div>
Why do I want two mono channels? Why do you want a stereo pair?
In my case, I usually have different mics connected to the two inputs on my camera. One may be a wireless and the other the on-camera mic, or another wireless. Hearing these in stereo wouldn't be natural at all, so why would I go to the trouble of capturing stereo only to have to pan them to center inside FCP? Even if I'm just using the on-camera mic (Sennheiser ME-64 or ME-66), it's a mono source so there's still no reason to convert it to stereo.
As another example, if I'm shooting a talking head, I'll have the person miced going to one channel. I usually won't even capture the other channel as its useless to me for editing purposes.
On the occasion I do want stereo, it's usually only when I'm taking a feed from my audio mixer where I may be mixing 6 or 8 or 10 mics. In those cases, I'll do the panning on the mixer and most likely WILL capture as stereo in FCP.

  • Recording in mono instead of stereo

I am an elementary teacher creating student podcasts. We've had no problem until today.
I have 4 5th generation video ipods that we use with TuneTalk stereo to record the pieces of our podcast. Suddenly one of my ipods will only record in mono. It downloads perfectly to iTune and everything sounds fine, but when I pull it into Garageband - it sounds like the chipmunks are visiting. My 4th graders think it's great - I don't!
I redownloaded - the voice memos - made sure I had synced it to the correct computer and the problem continued. I am syncing to a MacBook running 10.4.9. I made sure my iTunes and my iPod software are up to date. I am using iTunes 7.1.1
I have recently updated Quicktime to 7.1.6 and have been having some issues with the Q with the ? for podcasts using Safari. Would that bother my voice memos???
    Any suggestions??
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
If you're using video from a camcorder that shoots in 5.1 and your project is set up for stereo, you can end up with issues like this.

  • Does iPod with iTrip have a good quality sound on car stereo?

Does the iPod with a iTrip have as good a quality sound on the car stereo as say the same song on a CD?

Not even close. Even if you can find a completely unused frequency in your area to use the bandwith for FM is much more limited than a CD. Even a direct connection to your stereo is going to be below CD quality enless you are encoding with AIFF...assuming your ears can tell the difference.
