5.1 Sound on a 12" Powerbook

I recently purchased the Logitech z5500's. What would be the best/cheapest way to get 5.1 sound out of my powerbook? I have the Soundblaster Live! 24-Bit External Sound Card, but I don't think the software is compatable with Macs. Any information you have about this would be greatly appreciated. There has to be some way to make it work because Apple sells these speakers on their f'in website...
Also, does anyone know anything about hooking Xbox live up to a powerbook to use as a wireless card?

Welcome to the discussions, Alex.
A review on Apple's Irish store mentions a user using an M-Audio Transit to connect these speakers to his PowerBook. I don't know anything about it, but it seems to be a USB device that (above other things) adds an optical output that the z5500's can connect to for 5.1 sound:

  • No sound from my speakers Powerbook 17inch

I can't get any sound from my powerbook 17inch speakers. The only sound option in the Sound preference panel is Digital Out????? I get audio via headphones and line out, but no internal audio from the speakers!!!!!
    Any ideas......?/?

    Hi Crispian,
I've heard of this problem quite a bit. There is some type of a reed switch or similar thing inside the headphone jack that determines whether headphones are connected. Yours is most likely stuck. First, try and just plug/unplug a set of headphones a number of times from the jack and see if you can "unstick" it. Otherwise, you may need to have it repaired.

  • Buzzing sound from left of powerbook when tilted

If I tilt my powerbook at all I hear a buzzing noise coming from the left side of the powerbook. This has been somewhat recent and I wasnt sure what the problem was.
    Any suggestions?

Likely it's a loose fan, which I wouldn't not take care further.

  • Powerbook G4 sound card

What is the consensus on soundcards? Should I upgrade for studio work using L7E or just keep the built in sound card in my powerbook G4.

You profile seems to say you are using a Firewire solo, whic you could use for outputs.
Also, depedning on your powerbook, you may have optical output capability - I am using mine with a set of reference monitors that have optical SPDIF inputs. I think that is probably fine, if you have the option.
Otherwise if you upgrade your audio interface, it may also have other options for output as well.

  • Is my dysfunctional Powerbook G4 still sellable?

    Hi All,
I have heard a disturbing drilling sound internally in my powerbook, which has been shutting down on its own for the past few weeks. I have decided to let go of my dying 3-yr old powerbook and buy a new macbook. If I sell my Powerbook with an apparent dysfunctional harddrive, will anyone still buy it? And for how much approximately?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Look at what they are selling for on ebay, and knock $200 off that - new drives run around $60 give or take, double that for installation and inconvenience. If you can run the Apple hardware test from DVD, you can demonstrate that the rest of the hardware is functional, also boot from the OS X DVD.
If you sell the Powerbook with the dysfunctional hard drive, is there any personal data on it you don't want generally available? Me, I'm paranoid, so I'd either erase the drive or remove it before selling it. And if you're going to remove it, you can also replace it with a new one.

  • Powerbook newbie with questions

I bought a used 17-inch Powerbook 1.33GHz on eBay that was non-functional. I sent it in to DT&T Service of Fremont, CA, and they replaced the logic board and one 256MB RAM chip.
Sometimes when I start it up it goes into a procedure that I think is called Bootstrap. I'm not sure about the name, but obviously it's related to the OS starting up. It's like command line text.
Eventually, I see multiple errors relating to a problem with the sound chip, and the Powerbook doesn't emit any sound.
I'm going to contact DT&T and ask them about these problems, but any advice here is appreciated.
    G4 MDD 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I believe this is the last two boots from the system log. The very top of this string of commands starts with something about Timeslicing 10000 us. It doesn't seem to show up in this log.
    Thanks.

  • Imac G5 Sound problems after Leopard install

Hi All, This is my first post and I hope someone can help. I have just installed Leopard and on restart I now have no sound on any applications. I am also having some problems with my Netgear wireless router as the wireless card drops the connection on ocassions.

I am having the same problem but it's periodic. One day I went to work with some video and there was no sound so I hit the sound button on my powerbook, assuming I just had the sound turned off and the icon came up on my screen with the universal cicle with a slash through it indicating no sound. It was like this for a couple fo days and then all the sudden one morning my laptop "spoke up" by telling me the time. It has done that 2 additional times since there.
Any ideas why? It never did this prior to Leopard.

  • I can get any sound, what happened?

i can't get sound on my Mac Powerbook G4, what has happened?

    Hey mommy2aka,
    Welcome to the forums!
Sounds like you are having a software issues. Try to back up and complete a clean reload of the device software as shown here http://bbry.lv/cG8oer. I would also recommend  testing  before restoring data taht way you know if you have corrupt data on the device.
Let us know how you make out.

  • Hear Crackling+Beeping Sound Through Speakers (intermittently frequent)

When my Powerbook is on, I hear this crackling/beeping sound through my sound output (same through headphones as well). It just started acting up a couple days ago and hasn't stopped. It's rather annoying when I am trying to listen to music or even if no sound is coming through at all.
I don't know if you have recognised this, but if you are in a car or near some type of radio and a mobile phone is being used near it, the radio usually emits a little static-beeping sound because of the interference it is receiving from the telephone waves. That's the sound I am getting from my laptop. This has never happened before.
Is this a sound card malfunction that can be fixed by resetting it or removing and reinserting? Is there anything I can do? Maybe run some sound tests, I dunno. How?
    Thanks.

Hi, ljosh. If anyone who had seen your post knew exactly what to do, I doubt that they'd be keeping it a secret from you. I don't know what to do about your problem, but I can tell you that there's no sound card in a Powerbook for you to fiddle with: the audio circuitry is all on the main logic board. There's no room in there for a separate sound card.
All I can suggest is that you start up from a bootable CD and see whether the crackling continues when none of the software (including the OS) on your hard drive is in use. If it does, your Powerbook needs a hardware repair.

  • LE7, PowerBook 12", Korg and SPDIF

    Hi All,
I'm thinking of getting LE7 to sequence for my Korg PA1X. I'd be using it primarily on my 1Ghz 12" PowerBook with 768MB RAM. Mostly I'll be using it to sequence midi files to play on the Korg and then to record the performances to MP3's. I have a couple of questions if anyone would be so kind to help.
1). Can LE7 control my Korg (like an external sound module)? I saw from the LE/Pro comparison page that Pro has "External Instruments" ticked but Express doesn't. Is that just a red herring?
2). I'd like to use the SPDIF connections on my Korg to send the sound digitally to the PowerBook rather than having the added noise of analog. After all why convert digital to analogue then back to digital again. Is this possible and if so what would I need to do this?
3). Can LE7 handle lyrics both in the Midi file and the score?
4). Would a simple Midi / USB converter allow me to daisy chain additional devices should I wish to do so later by using the Thru connectors?
5). Given the simple level of what I need to do I'm presuming that it would be overkill to invest in Pro? If I'm wrong would someone be so kind as to put me right. Just for the record I don't need lots of software synths and effects. I have all I need in outboard hardware.
6). How do I get the trial version of LE? I've been looking for a while but I never seem to be sucessful as the link I keep finding just gives me page not found errors? I'm obviously doing something wrong somewhere.
Any help offered would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    David.

Although saying that, just recently I've seemed to be able to change sample rate just from the audio menu in logic, and not had to change the hardware. But I dunno why this is, OR whether it is then truly working at 96khz.

  • Delayed system alert sounds

I have a little problem which is an annoyance more than anything else - though it could indicate a more serious problem.
The system alert sounds on my 17" PowerBook occur approximately two seconds after an alert winow appears. Sometimes I don't actually hear my prefered alert sound - I just hear the speaker make a very quite crackle.
When I shut down the alert sound which should accompany the Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shutdown option is not heard until the desktop has disappeared and the progress wheel (not the beachball) is rotating.
    Any clues, please?
    TIA
    Alf

Systems before X played system beeps perfectly. OS X seems to read all beeps off the hard drive. I have never been able to get OS X to play a beep without accessing the hard drive, which annoys me far beyond this tiny little issue might deserve. I understand why systems should move away from direct calls to the hardware, but this is certainly a downgrade in the human interface, when what took microseconds in OS 6-9 now takes deciseconds. I've noticed that the cache holds the system beep a bit better in 10.4, so that there's a minimal delay, but still not as good as my old macs. The more able computers get, the harder it is for them to do the simple things. The corollary is that system programmers focus on new features instead of improving performance, or it's easier to write new code than to shorten old code.

  • Sound output is not working

    Hi!
The sound output of the PowerBook G4 I use at the office is not working now. When I had a look at the Preferences Pane, it says no Output Devices Found. Not even the built-in speakers.
Is there anything I can do, or should I take to some Technical Service?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Try resetting PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 . This can sometimes fix sound problems.

  • Difference between PowerBooks and MacBooks

    Hi there,
I've been looking at the MacBook 2.1GHz new from Apple. A friend who has had quite a lot of experience with Apple computers and laptops mentioned something about the PowerBook (1.something GHz) being better than the MacBook above. Is this correct? I will be using it for internet browsing, word processing, music, videos & movies and a little bit of Photoshop. He said he used one and even though the processor speed is slower on paper- it's overall much better.
Thats just from one person, he could be wrong.
Any advice from an even more experienced person?
    Thanks.

    I guess it depends. I have both a Macbook, and a PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz 15".
    Specs on the Macbook:
    - 2.16Ghz Core2Duo
    - 3GB RAM
    - 120GB HD
    - 13" Screen
    - OS X 10.5
    Specs on the PowerBook:
    - 1.5Ghz
    - 2GB RAM
    - 80GB HD
    - 15" Screen
    - OS X 10.5
The PowerBook is used at work, the Macbook is my general use personal system. Which do I prefer? The PowerBook. WHAT? Yeah, I said PowerBook. My reasoning? The PowerBook runs plenty fast with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Coda, Firefox, etc, just like the Macbook. However, I like the 15" Matte finish screen better than the 13" Gloss screen. For work viewing it makes life easier. The USB port placement on the PowerBook is better. There is 1 USB port on the left, 1 on the right, making it easy to plug in 2 devices. On my Macbook, when I plug my USB wireless mouse in, it leaves no room for a USB key, etc.
The aluminum on the PowerBook G4 seems cleaner than that of the Macbook. I got my macbook in October, and my powerbook which I just got was used by faculty at my college since 2005 I believe. Having said that, the PowerBook looks cleaner than the white Macbook. I am not a dirty person, however the color white is just not friendly when it comes to daily use at work and home. Also, the PowerBook is said to come with a backlight keyboard (mine doesn't work however :/ ). Finally, the Macbook's speakers are weak to say the least. They face backwards, and are by no means loud. For DVD viewing, I need to have volume at 100%, however with my PowerBook having it at 75% is just like the Macbook 100%, and the PowerBook has a deeper, richer sound.
And the PowerBook just looks more elegant (like the Macbook Pro). Thats just my 2 cents. I still love both.

  • Stuttering sound output

The sound from the 17" Powerbook 1 Ghz has recently started to "stutter" when moving the mouse around the desktop and/or typing... mousing over a link in Safari or mousing over items in the dock is particularly bad... cannot play iTunes when working on a document or surfing pages. Has anyone else had this problem and found a fix?

    Nevermind!
Found a new link for downloading the installer. Re-installed, restarted, voila!
