5.1 Sound Through Audio Out

Hi,
I'm looking to get a 5.1 speaker system for my iMac to play dvd's, quicktime movies etc through. What i would like to know is will a speaker system be able to process into 5.1 sound going through a jack connection?
Could you help me and tell me if that connection would work, if there are any special type of cable i will need etc.
Haven't decided on a set of speakers yet, but im looking to spend around £100 ($200) and are there any which would be specifically suited for my predicament? If they could hold there own with some metal blazing out that would be a bonus too!!
Thanks for your time!

What you may be looking for is something like the Griffin FireWave. It will connect to your iMac via FireWire, and it has the standard set of 3 dual channel output jacks (FR, FL; SW, C; and RS, LS) to interface with 5.1 channel speaker setups.
I have one these connected to my iMac, and hooked to a Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 setup; It is excellent. There is an additional firewire jack on the FireWave, to replace the one it uses.
You can read more about it here: [http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewave]
There is even a software control panel, allowing you to play true Dolby Digital from the appropriate source, as well as ProLogic surround from two channel sources; sounds great with iTunes stuff.

  • Apple tv 2 and 1 not playing sound through optical out.

Hello all, just bought a new atv2. Thought I'd stress the difficulty i had in getting it to stream from the main Mac in the house. What a pain. Silly home sharing, why it couldn't be as simple as atv1!
Anyway it's working now. My issue is this; I want to use the atv2 as a music streaming device and not attach it to a screen. I will control it from my iPhone remote.
After connecting it to 2 hifis with optics I can't get sound to come out. In fact none of the 3 atvs seem to work by simply connecting directly to the optical out. Sure they are all fine when connected by hdmi. But I don't always want the tvs left on.
Also, I'm having difficulty in getting the atvs to act as remote speakers systems when i operate the main music library. I guess this will all be resolved when i work out how to get the optics to work!
    Thanks in advance.

Apple TV may or may not work without a screen. Some devices will not function unless they "sense" a display. This is particularly likely to be the case with a HDMI device, which uses a communication protocol that requires handshaking with the display.
The most common reason why optical inputs might not work with a receiver is that the receiver is not configured to take the sound off the optical port. Most modern receivers can accept sound from multiple ports, and optical is often not the default. Note that you can tell whether the AppleTV is generating a signal by unplugging the optical cable from your receiver and looking for the red light. at the tip of the cable.

  • Buzzing through Audio Out Port?

Hey guys, bit of christmas dissapointment here!
Plugged in my new speakers to replace my old ones that let out a faint buzzing noise in the background after a while of being plugged in.
But these do the same, so its definately the Mini.
Its a fairly quiet, buzzing, soft static noise, that plays in the background for ages and ages. Its only a couple of years old this Mac, any suggestions?

See if there's a red light coming from the socket, if so it's got stuck in Digital Audio Out mode. Try inserting and removing the headphone jack while you wiggle it slightly to dislodge/flip the small switch inside the socket.

  • No digital sound through digital-out coxial

    Hello,
    first my config :
    msi kt3ultra-ARU
    Athlon XP1800+
    1x256mb DDR RAM
    2x80GB IBM Raid 0 (great performance !!!)
    1x40 GB IBM HDD
    1x LG CD-Writer
    1x TEAC 32x CD-ROM
    no my problem :
i connected my yamaha sorround receiver through the digital out of the s-bracket with an coxial cabel but i only get the windows sound that click clack sound but no digital sound like dts or 5.1 when i play vob-files with defenitly have digital sound. it all worked fine but i reinstalled w2k and no i only get the system-sound.
i installed the latest ac97 drivers from msi but nothing helped.

    Hi,
Can you describe what did you do "before" and "after" the problem occured? Sounded like
before - no Yamaha speakers, no Win2k reinstallation
after - Win2k reinstallation, with Yamaha speakers
Or before and after (win2k installation) you have tested your Yamaha speakers and it worked?
What if you use analog output, does it sound?
If analog sound, then probably you have to check the AC'97 and Volume settings, such as to enable Digital-output etc.

  • Ultrabase for x201 / x200 audio out noise - lenovo dont want to fix - please check yours

    Hi,
I own x201 with ultrabase for a year. From the beginning I tried get Lenovo to fix audio output on ultrabase. When connected on AC the sound from audio out is full of noise (even when music is muted), what makes it unusable. When the AC is unplugged, the noise is smaller, but still there. So I need to use audio out from the x201 even when docked.
As I had many other problems with x201 I have been in service 3times already. Anyway, regarding this issue they final verdict is that ultrabase is not a HI-FI and it works as planned. Maybe is not a issue if you plug just small PC speakers, but anything else (including headphones) its useless.
Whats the point of audio out in docking station which is useless?
Can somebody from Lenovo confirm that its normal that ultrabase audio output is noisy ?
Can other owners check if they ultrabase output is noisy with some headphones/hi-fi ?
    Thanks in advance
    Tomas

do you use a grounded power plug? audio noise usually means that the ultrabase has a bad connection to the laptop's dock connector. Or that the ultrabase audio connector/lines are receiving electrical noises from other surrounding devices.
With my Ultrabase X200 the noise will go away when all the usb ports on the ultrabase is unplugged.

  • Bluetooth handsfree silenced by aux. audio out

I have Bluetooth handsfree in my car. It works fine with the Fascinate. ...until I plug my Fascinate auxillary audio output into the auxillary audio input for my car stereo. After that, the Bluetooth connection is maintained and dialing is possible, but call audio doesn't work as long as the auxillary audio jack is in use.  The moment I unplug the audio cable, handsfree audio works again.  This is unacceptible; I should be able to use Bluetooth handsfree for calls while I listen to music playing out through audio out.  My old phone did that fine.
Unfortunately, Samsung seems to disagree.  Their support told me:
    "Dear Mr Dale
Thank you for your inquiry. While your hanset does  support the bluethooth profile for hands free operation, this would be best addressed by vehicle manufacturer, as they can provide a list  handsets approved for compatibility. In most cases, this information is avaliable on the manufacturer's website. Please bear in mind that samsung does not support the use of any third party hardware with are handsets. We apologize for any incovenience this presents.

Any chance Verizon could lean on them to fix this design flaw?

Since this error only occurs on your Droid I would assume that it is a system error. I recommend performing a factory reset to clear out all settings. The steps to do this are listed below:
Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.
Follow the directions below to perform a hard reset:
From the home screen, touch the Applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).
    Touch Settings.
    Touch Privacy.
    Touch Factory data reset.
    Touch Reset phone.
    Touch Erase Everything

  • Hi i upgrade from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am getting no sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Why doesn't the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock relay sound from it's audio out port?

Posted to Belkin Support community to no avail
    =====================
Why can't my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock operate my desktop speakers?
    Options
    07-14-2014 01:48 PM
Bought a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock at the Apple Store to use with my new MacBook Pro.
When I connected it to my
    -20" Mac Cinema display,
-Various USB connected hubs and devices,
    -Various Firewire hubs and devices
-My ethernet network from my Cable Modem
Then made the last connection from the Dock to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro...
    All was fine.
But when I made that one last connection - to my desktop speakers via the audio-out port on the dock (earphones icon) nothing happened.  The dock did not pick up the audio from the laptop playng an iTunes song or send it to the desktop speakers.  When I unplugged the audio cable from the Dock and plugged it in to the MacBook Pro directly, the desktop speakers kicked right in again.
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
Of for some reason, can that signal not be carried by Thunderbolt?
Will I have to get used to the onerous task of unplugging 2 cables from my MacBook Pro when I want to more it to another location in stead of just 1 cable?
But stay with me.  Here's the thing.
When this happened I called Belkin Customer Support to ask if they could help me.  After taking me through their steps, they agreed that the unit must be defective and agreed to ship me a replacement Thunderbolt Express Dock.
The replacement arrived over the weekend and when I shut down my system and then plugged everything from Dock I purchased into the replacement Thunderbird Express Dock - - - - - the same thing happened!
No signal to the speakers from the dock.  Perfect signal when the plug moved from the Dock to the computer itself.
    Hence my question:
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
    Can it accomplish that function?
Am I really that unlucky to have received 2 defective new Belkin Thunderbolt Express Docks in a row?
Or is it simply a matter of the Dock not handling audio throughput in the manner I am expecting.
Then again, if this is the case, why did the Belkin techies not know this when I called them in the first place.
Yes, I'm going on and on here.  But I really don't have time for this.
    What's going on here?

OK.  No reason to be playing games here.  Just surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up here on the community boards as well.  Here's the simple solution

After reaching a Level III technician in Belkin customer support today and having spent approximately 4-5 person hours on this issue, we figured out that the Sound/Output preferences in the Apple System Preferences should not be set to "Internal Speakers"  but rather set to "USB PnP Sound Device".
Worked like a charm.  Simple, elegant solution to a real problem, one likely to be encountered by 90% of the people who buy a Belkin Thunderbid Express Dock off the shelves of any Apple Store to use with a current generation Apple laptop or desktop computer.
But the Level III Belkin technician admmtted that this critical little piece of simple, straightforward information should have been readily available to their Level 1 techies who began helping me 5 person hours ago.  Would even have saved Balkin loads of customer service support time.
    And so the saga ends
Belkin owes me for helping them learn this precious lesson.

  • Connecting audio out of TV to sound c

    Hey,
I have the audigy 2 platinum card. Today I connected the audio out from the tv to the sound card. What I got was some background noice and a delay. What ever was being said through the tv's speakers would come out through the computer's speaker with a second or two of delay. Basically I connected the cables to the tv's out and to the aux 2 in. Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to connect the sound to come out through the computer's speaker without the delay? Thanks in advance for the help.

  • No Sound through Digital/Optical Out

I have connected my Macbook to my AV receiver/amp via a mini Toslink to standar Toslink cable. The Mac recognizes that it is attached to a digital output under the DVD Preferences but there is no sound through my receiver. My amp is set to receive the Optical signal and my DVD player works fine through the same input, so I know the amp connection works.
I have connected the Macbook to my 1080i TV and wanted to watch movies with digital sound.
I have done multiple searches on this website as well as searched using Google, with no fix.
I have already ensured the settings in the DVD Player are set to send the Digital signal, I have re-started the computer and still nothing.
    Please Help.

I'm having the same problem. I've connected my macbook via mini toslink to standard to listen to music on my sound system. It worked fine for atleast 6 months but today it started making static and poping noises when the music was playing through the speakers. My roommate tried his 13" MacBook and the speakers work fine on his computer. After a little bit, the digital out just stopped delivering sound although it recognizes that the optical cable is plugged in (checked through preferences-->sound) But now no audio signal is sent out. The receiver on the speakers doesn't recognize any data being sent.
Anybody know how to fix this?

  • Audio problems - soft sound, no line-out detected

ok, so a number of things went wrong with my computer.
it was working perfectly, and i opened garage band up to record music, and all of a sudden, no sound was coming out. at this stage i was using the line-out to my stereo amp. it also wouldnt let me change the volume and came up with the circle-with-a-line-through-it symbol.
i did all the standard stuff, close garage band, play with the settings, go into system pref. restarted it, and then it was making some strange fuzzy noises, and system pref. said that no audio devices were detected, so i restarted again. now i only have built-in output detected, and its very quiet, even on full volume, the volume and mute controls all work.
so thats all of my problems. im currently running OS X 10.4.10 on an intel-based iMac.
    thanks

    Folks,
on Nov. 29, 2007 we have begun shipping a revised PocketDock Line Out USB, which is now iPhone-enabled. We have also revised the 1/8" stereo plugs on the included cables, so they are now thin enough to fit the iPhone’s recessed headphone jack.
Note that not all retailers might have the newest stock, so if you want to be on the safe side, either ask for which revision they sell (the iPhone-option is mentioned on the packaging) or order directly from http://www.sendstation.com.

  • No sound from rear audio out port?

    Hey guys.
I am trying to troubleshoot a sound issue with a Vista Home Basic machine.
I can't really give you all the MOBO specs etc because I am not currently in front of the machine. I can however confirm that it is using a Realtek chipset and is configured using the Realtek Sound Manager software.
I am really just wanting to use basic sound (i.e. just speaker, not 5., 7. etc).
I am trying to make use of an old stereo system by using a 3.5mm aux jack to dual RCA (white and red) plugs.
I can get sound when I plug the aux jack into the front earphones port but I cannot get sound when I try and use the analogue audio out (lime green) port at the rear of the machine. Vista states that it is working correctly and has a tick next to the speakers but no sound is produced by the speakers.
The MOBO has the following available audio connectors:
Analogue = Mic in (Pink) Audio in (light blue) Audio out (lime green)
Centre Speaker (Orange) Rear Surround (Black) Mid Surround (Grey)
    Digital = x SPDIF
You may ask at this point, why not just use the front headphones jack? Well, the problem is that it seems to be very sensiti've in that Vista keeps reporting that the jack is cycling between a connected and disconnected state.
I also cannot use the SPDIF, as the old stereo only supports aux left and right RCA.
Also, when I try and get one of the rear ports to work, I have made sure that nothing is connected to the sound ports at the front as I know that this can cause problems.
When I plug in the 3.5mm jack into the green port, the Realtek sound manager kicks in and says that "a jack as been connected". I then confirm that I have infact connected the jack to the rear audio out port. I then follow the steps in the wizard but am not able to get sound.
I made sure that I used the most basic settings (i.e. speakers and not 5. etc).
I even tried the grey, black and orange ports (even though I know they are used for surround sound setups) and still no luck.
One interesting setting I did notice was that in Winamp, I had to select the "allow mono speaker" setting to have it play sound through the front headphones port.
However, when I was configuring the rear green port in the Realtex Sound Manager software, there was no mono option. There was only stereo, 5., 7. and some quad....... thing.
Any ideas guys on how to get the rear green port working?
I am wondering if it has something to with a connector on the MOBO. But as I said, Vista and Realtek manager seem to report that all is well.
    My thanks in advance.

  • Audio out jack only plays sound in the right speaker.

Whenever I plug anything (speakers, earphones, etc.) into the Audio Output jack, it only plays sound through the right speaker/earphone. The left speaker/earphone hardly has any sound at all.
How should I go about fixing this problem?
It ***** and it's annoying. At first, I thought it was just my earphones but they work perfectly fine with my iPod and other devices.

    HI Chris,
my daughter has the ipod touch 4th generation and it started only having sound come out of the right speakers in both of my vehicles.  I read also it could be a broken socket causing it.  Do you know about this?  How does one break a socket and how would I repair that?  The person on y*hoo answers said to either send it to apple refurbished unit or replace it.  Replace it?  Really?  It's a 64 GB ipod touch that I won at work with reward points which is the only reason I could afford it.  Looking for better solution like your's above but I'm worried I will have to send it in.  I was looking on my iphone 4 and noticed the volume balance was under Settings>General>Accessibility so I guess it's different on an ipod touch?
