5.1 surround monitoring...

I am soon to be the proud owner of a Mac Pro and in preparation I am getting everything in order to set up my 5.1 surround sound monitoring system. I currently have a M-Audio 1814 Firewire interface (almost identical to the 410 but with more inputs and outputs). I was wondering what the most simple setup for this would be. I have seen previous threads that have been made about this specific topic but I haven't seen a definite answer. Would I be able to just hook the toslink output on the mac pro into a 5.1 receiver or do I need to go through the firewire interface and use the 1/4 inch outputs...thanks in advance for any help

"Double posts" are fine!
Thanks a bunch - when I originally purchased this interface I needed it more for >multichannel recording in Pro Tools - but I did find a ADAT converter (Optical to >Analog was fairly difficult to find) http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/2006/SM-Pro-Audio-AI8.html
If you could let me know what you think about that product, I found it on another >online retailer for 150 - unless you find anything else that would work. Thanks >for the help again
I don't think it'd be a good idea to get the AI8, because it's not even on the SM Pro Audio website, so it's obviously not well supported.
I also found the Presonus Digimax FS which is an ADAT converter that would also add 8 preamped inputs as well 8 outputs.
That could work, but I don't know how to set STP to output over ADAT (IF it can even be done), so I can't help you there. I would advise that if you don't have experience with ADAT Lightpipe, then it'd be better to not go that route. Stick with the simpler stuff. If you are pleased with the 1814, then you should get the 410, in my opinion.

  • Surround monitoring issue

    Hi
I have a ASUS P5P43TD PRO mainboard which has 8 channels Audio output and I plugged a five speakers set to the mainboard audio outputs and set the configuration on Realtec options to 5.1 speakers mode.
Then there's no additional audio channel mapping both on Audition And Premiere for surround monitoring, there's only 2 channels appears on channel mapping.
Please help me to find out there's a software problem or hardware issue.
    thanx.

Just to be clear, lots of onboard sound cards have onboard decoders...their prime purpose is for playing back videos.
What they can't do is playback six SEPARATE sound tracks, which is what you would have  in Audition or Premiere since you need to be able to edit these tracks .  The encoding to AC3 or whatever generally comes as the very last stage of audio production, once all the tracks are mixed and finalised.
Alas, if you want to mix surround sound you need the proper tools...and that's more than a 39 cent Realtek chip.
One to watch out for just now is the Tascam US 1800...I don't have one but several friends in the audio game swear by them.  It has plenty of outputs for your needs and, because Tascam are replacing it with an updated model, there are some big discounts to be had if you get in soon.

  • Surround Monitoring

I have been trying to find some sort of answer to this for the past eight hours and it is driving me crazy. I've set up a MOTU UltraLite-mk3 as my solution for 5.1 monitoring. I have six great KRK actives hooked up to it using analog outs 1-6 following the standard lineup (Lf, Rf, C, LFE, Ls, Rs). When testing each individual speaker in Audio MIDI Setup, they work fine.
Now, here's the problem: in Soundtrack, they do NOT sound fine. In fact, they don't output to the correct speakers at all. I've tried the same in Final Cut Pro. In Logic they seem to work just as they should, but not in Soundtrack. There, the Lf is the center, the center is a rear, and the rest do nothing. Now if I switch to channels 7-12, the rears act as my two front speakers.
This makes absolutely no sense to me. Has anyone hooked up an UltraLite as a surround monitoring device for Soundtrack and had luck? What am I missing?
    Thank you all!
    -N

It may be that STP is calling your Main outs outputs 1-2, so then your outs 1-6 on the Ultralight would correspond to 3-8 in Soundtrack Pro.
Since What should be a left (1) is coming out the center (3), that seems to make sense to try.
I have a MOTU interface, and I have experienced some programs treating the mains as outs as 1-2, with all of the other outputs moved down two spots like that in my unit.
    Good luck! Hope this helps.

  • Surround monitoring and digital conntectivity

would it be possible to use the digital outs using a mini-TOSLINK on the Mac side going to a normal optical digital connector on the other end feeding a Logitech Z-5500. Can the Mac be set up to send specific feeds down the digital signal like as stated in the Soundtrack user manual (ie 1=L, 2=R, 3=C etc) or will that only work if you are going analog and using a pro audio interface that has 6 discrete inputs.
If a digital signal feeding the Logitech wont work, then I am thinking, Presonus firebox feeding a home theatre amp with 6 discrete inputs. Thanks for any insight.

    Dear forum,
I am searching for an audio interface to use with MBP or G5 for mixing and monitoring of four to 6 outputs channels into PMC active speakers. I am using a Lavry DA 11 DAC for stereo monitoring. I do not require an interface with inputs for recording music as all my recording is done away from my macs, it just the outputs i need to monitor audio I have loaded to computer via CF card. All the interfaces I see have loads of inputs I don't require. Is there an interface available without inputs?
Or I am looking at the wrong sort of device?

You need an interface that has 8 outputs. Most of these include 8 or more inputs as well. The inputs will not be a problem when mixing, you can ignore them.
I have yet to see an interface that is only outputs.

  • External sound card for surround monitoring?

My Soundblaster Live 24-bit USB card allows me to monitor all channels when mixing in 5.1 in AA 1.5.  However, I understand that that's not going to happen in AA 3.0 (according to other posts I've read).  Can anyone recommend a USB sound card that *will* allow 5.1 monitoring in AA 3.0?
    J. D.

Most USB audio interfaces are only USB1 and don't have sufficient bandwidth for the six channels of audio that you need for 5.1. However some manufacturers have started producing USB2 multichannel interfaces but there aren't many of them yet and they tend to be quite pricy.

  • MOTU 828 mk II & I/O mixing 5.1 surround & stereo

    Hello all
Is anyone aware of a link for implimentation of MOTU 828 mkII I/O's using Logic 9? The 828 mkII manual doesn't make mention of how to assign Logic Inputs or Outputs in relation to the MOTU channels.
I'm setting up a MOTU 828 Firewire Mk II after my Mk I just went down.  The Mk I  input & output channels seemed so obvious to set up in Logic I/O prefs ..... 5.1 surround came out of Logic Audio Channel Outputs 1-6  then via the Firewire went into the 828 mk 1 and out of the corresponding channels   .... and ordinary stereo came out of Logic via channels 1 & 2 into 1 & 2 of the 828 mk 1..... monitoring and bouncing was simple and obvious.
However I can't sort out a basic output routing in the 828 mk 2 for what should be straight forward?
PLEASE CAN ANYONE POINT ME TO AN AUDIO ROUTING SET UP FOR USING LOGIC WITH SURROUND & STANDARD STEREO WITH A MOTU 828 mk 2 ...... IT SEEMS LIKE KINDERGARTEN STUFF BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY INFO ANYWHERE?
I've got a happy surround mix coming out of all six Logic channels and playing back out of the 828 analogue outs with Logic Prefs I/O Assignments like this:
    Basic - 5.1 (ITU 775)
    Left OUTPUT 3
    Right OUTPUT 4
    L surround OUTPUT 5
    R surround OUTPUT 6
    Centre OUTPUT 7
    LFE OUTPUT 8
However I haven't tried a 5.1 bounce yet as am not sure what on earth ends up in the resulting 6 audio files (SO confusing !)
My Mac OSX stereo sound is playing out of the 828 by choosing OSX System Prefs Sound - "MOTU 828" ... but the idea of choosing Outputs 3 & 4 to bounce a standard stereo audio file out of Logic seems totally nuts.
However ... I don't seem to be able to bounce a standard stereo mix ? (even though I can hear it playback in the L & R monitors of my 5.1 studio monitors ...... the resulting sound fle has no sound in it (either WAV or MP3?)
Please can any one help !!!??  I got my knickers in a major twist?
Is there a Logic Channel Re- Routing guide somewhere for using both 5.1 & stereo with a 828mk2 without the necessaity to change standard stereo Logic outputs to 3 & 4?
    Best wishes
    Richard

GUYS - THIS IS THE SILLY SIMPLE FIX ......
Keep everything routed in Logic outputs as normal:-
    L - 1
    R - 2
    Ls -3
    Rs -4
    C - 5
    LFE - 6
So bounce everything as normal including standard stereo outs.
    Make the MOTU audio setup:-
DEFAULT STEREO OUTPUT - MAIN OUT 1-2
    Take the 828 mk2 outputs to your surround monitors;
L comes out of MAIN OUT 1
R comes out of MAIN OUT 2
Ls comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 1
Rs comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 2
C comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 3
LFE comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 4
DONE ....... you can carry on as if nothing happened!
Thanks for looking at this ..... sorry for being a nincompoop !
    Best
    Richard
PS NOT GOOD MOTU - this info isn't anywhere to be found  - just my trial and error

  • Soundcard for surround sound

I have a G5 tower, I didn't get a seperate sound card for it, but would I need one in order to design a soundtrack to be 5.1?
I want to map certain sound clips to front, back, sub, etc. can I do thise without a 3rd party soundcard or do I need something else, (does STP) even handle surround sound mapping?

STP doesn't support surround sound actually. There's some workarounds, particularly using buses but it's not very elegant. Hopefully, the next version of Soundtrack Pro will include that because surround sound is the future of post-prod.
If you want do to surround sound now, you could check Logic Pro, altough it's a bit overkill for your needs; or Digital Performer, altough it's CPU-hungry.
Of course, you will need an audio interface with multi-outs, I'd suggest you check the Focusrite Saffire. You will also need a surround monitor system, if you don't want to spend too much, you could check some M-Audio speakers. I'd rather use Mackie 624 but they're not in the same price range!

  • Appropriate surround hardware for Soundtrack Pro 2

I’m thinking of upgrading to FCS 2 for, among other reasons to create surround mixes on corporate DVDs. Can anyone advise on what sort of hardware I’d need at 'prosumer' level. Would I definitely need a multi-channel card like the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Revolution51-main.html) or would a speaker setup with internal processing such as the Logitech Z-5500 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakersaudio/home_pcspeakers/devices/224&cl=us,en) be sufficient?
I’m not looking for a high end solution, but good enough to get reasoablly good directional feedback on the mix. Any advice and guidance appreciated, thanks.
    Chris

    hi
for creating 5.1 you need to have a surround monitoring setup for mixing and then encode your mix to a surround (AC3) file - afaik the m-audio/logitech setup you mentioned are really only for surround playback of encoded audio.
you need an audio interface with 6 outputs, 5 monitors + a sub unit.
then when you are happy with or want to test your 5.1 mix, you encode the mix to a 5.1 file - this is what you burn onto the DVD as the audio track. then you need to test the DVD through a 5.1 speaker setup like the logitech ones or any home theatre setup.
M-Audio do decent gear @ lower budget - Firewire 410, BX-5a Speakers and BX-10 sub is an adequate package for surround work.
my recommendation would be for ...
Muto UltraLite (RME Fireface 400 if you can stretch) + the Blue Sky Media Desk 5.1 speaker system.
this is the best value for quality that I have found - if you can afford them, you should have no regrets!
    hope this helps

It will likely run FCP but won't run Motion or Color. If the fastest external drive connection you have is FW800 then you'll be somewhat limited in the number of streams of video you can work with at the same time.
Also, it would run better with 4 GB RAM.

Sent a 14 minute film(DV Pal)  as a multitrack session from FCP and the application crashes as soon as I click on the edge of an audio cue
Tried sending without any vision and no difference. Going to try an Media Managed version of the sequence. After that I'm stumped.

I'm using a Kona 3 in a quad core and it works in all aspects of I/o.
16 tracks in and out and mixing and monitoring in stereo and surround. And yes, I have a proper surround monitoring setup.
I suspect it's the I/o box itself. Maybe, because its outboard it isn't setup to handle that kind of monitoring. Did you ask AJA?

  • Audio scrubbing problem in Soundtrack Pro

Hi, new to this forum but not new to pro audio! I've been all round the houses trying to fix this one; hope somebody knows the answer.
The problem is that although FCP's audio works as expected through the AJA, Soundtrack Pro only outputs playback audio through it. Scrubbed audio outputs through the Mac's audio out and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to change it. With the way the edit suite's set up this means switching the monitoring selector just to hear scrubbing - not the best workflow arrangement!
The AJA device only seems to be recognised by Soundtrack Pro for video, not audio.
I'm using a Mac Pro 2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an AJA Io audio/video interface; OS is 10.5.8. I'm also using Final Cut Pro 7.01 and Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks, Doug.

  • What Audio Hardware Should I Use?

Intel Core i7-4930K, Asus GeForce GTX 780, Silverstone Temjin SST-TJ04B-E (Black) - My Video Editing Build - percoplus's…
I am building this rig at the moment. I have everything on hand except for the Quadro K4000 which should be here any time.
There is so much info online about system components for video editing, but I am not sure what to do about my audio setup. I am certain the motherboard's onboard audio is capable, but should I get an external box, mixer, etc.? What about speakers?
I have had a set of M-Audio BX5a Speakers connected to my current system's sound card, but one of them is defective and need replacement. So, I'm going shopping today. Not sure if I should go with a good set of computer speakers from Fry's or to Guitar Center for an elaborate audio interface with studio monitors. I am not a sound engineer, but I do film musical performances and other events and would like to deliver somewhat professional sounding video.

Surround monitoring is different with Pro Audio interfaces. They have separate channels for audio output ie routing via analog and they don't come with a surround sound decoder for the SPDIF. Surround sound is monitored via separate wires and speakers for each channel in surround. This means the audio interface has to have atleast that many analog channels to use for 5.1 or 7.1. The UR22 only has stereo so that would not be enough. That would require the UR824 or something similar which would cost far more. Consumer speakers have decoding or routing through the audio device and sub often times versus separate channels for each. This is ok for just listening to surround but impossible to use really for mixing surround. You also have the cost difference in speakers since you have to buy a speaker for each channel in pro audio setup. If you need surround and don't have the budget for separate speakers then the onboard audio or a Asus Audio card are going to be the best options.

  • Soundtrack Pro 2 and 5.1 sound

Okay, I know there are quite a few threads addressing surround sound already, but none of them have really answered my question, so here it is.
I have a 20" Intel iMac (Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz & 2 GB RAM) and am highly interested in finally being able to really mix 5.1 sound in STP. However, is there any way that I can monitor the surround mix in real-time using the Logitech Z-5500's?
I know I can't use the optical out on the Mac, but I do have an Alesis io26 (which I might end up selling - might need to replace it with something else) AD/DA interface. Can 5.1 be output from the Mac over FireWire to the io26 and then out of the S/PDIF output on the io26 to the S/PDIF input on the Z-5500's?
I suppose, to put it more simply, can 5.1 sound be output from STP via S/PDIF to a reciever with S/PDIF input?
    Thanks guys!

So, from a theoretical stand point, if I were to get the Edirol FA-101[1] and hook it up to my iMac via FireWire and then hook up 6 of the 1/4" Phono outputs to my Onkyo A/V receiver's 6 RCA inputs[2] for 5.1 audio via a 1/4" Phono to RCA adapter[3] then that should work, right?
After I have everything hooked up like that, I'd just need to route everything up in Soundtrack to output on the correct channel on the FA-101 to get live surround monitoring, correct?

  • Studio setup

    hello!
i am a student with a small 10'x12' studio in which i do primarily visual effects and editing in. Recently i have been doing projects that require sound design and the use of 5.1 sound.
i am semi-cluless when it comes to audio but what i am looking to do is set up a 5.1 surround sound system in my studio not for mixing but monitoring in Final Cut Pro and soundtrack pro. How do i do this? How do I get the audio from my Mac Pro to the surround sound reciever? I do not have tons of money to spend so the cheaper and easier the better!
thanks in advance for the help.

if you want to playback surround audio tracks from STP or FCP then you need to have a surround monitoring setup = 6 x mono analog outputs going into 5 monitors + 1 Subwoofer.
the TOSLINK will only send encoded audio to the Logitech speakers. you won't be able to send the audio from STP or FCP out to the seperate speakers using that setup.
the least expensive setup I could recommend would be the M-Audio 410 interface with their BX-5a monitors & BX-10 Subwoofer to monitor the surround channels from STP or FCP.
