5.1 surround problem

Hi, I have a Logitech X-540 5.1 sound system. When I select 5.1 sound channel on VLC or other video player, I'm getting this error.
0x2e83800] alsa audio output error: audio device: surround51 is already in use
[0x2e83800] alsa audio output error: cannot open ALSA device `surround51' (Aygıt ya da özkaynak meşgul)
[0x2e83800] oss audio output error: cannot open audio device (/dev/dsp)
[0x2e83800] jack audio output error: failed to connect to JACK server
Stream with high frequencies VQ coding
What can I do for solve this problem?

'Re: Creative X-Fi 5. Surround Problem. Hi,
As far as I know, you can only get stereo audio from the optical output unless you are playing encoded Dolby or DTS audio. See this link for more info. http://forums.creative.com/creativel...&thread.id=270
For your analog output, it seems strange that your speaker test only have audio in the front left and right but music is ok. Maybe you can try using earphone or something and connect to the rear jack and the centre/subwoofer jack to see if you can hear any audio from them? This may help to check if the problem is due to audio not coming out from your x-fi 5. surround or due to your speakers setup. It should also help to know which version of drivers you are running on. You may also want to try the new beta drivers that was release in Feb just to check.

  • Optical Output surround problem with SB X'FI Xtreme Audio Notebook (Gray one)

    Dear All and Creative Gurus,
I search through the forum and read all sticky thread and didn't find an answer, so I need to post here:
I just bought this ExpressCard sound card for my laptop, and nearly all work fine. I know pretty well Creative tools and settings for years as I already have an XtremeGamer PCI card for my desktop PC.
I meet an Optical Output issue with this new Notebook card:
When I use any software to play DTS or Dolby Digital signal from video or music (E.g. a DVD with PowerDVD or VLC), the Optical Output only send "basic" st?r?o, and my amplifier can't detect any surround. Surround is OK when I use the little dock with the 7. analog output.
As a comparison, with the other computer, and the X'FI XtremeGamer sound card, and using same settings, same sources and same software (VLC or PowerDVD set to spdif output) the Optical Output send surround sound, and my amplifier detect Dolby or DTS source.
So I hope it's just a drivers (updated I think) or settings problem, and I hope this optical output is not made only for st?r?o sound!
Let me know your feelings here Guys, thanks! And keep the good work
    Best regards,
    Loran_69
Edit few minuts after : All work fine if I use the "Creative MediaSource 5 Player" !
The optical Output send surround and my amplifier well detect the Dolby or DTS source!
So what's going on with other software like VLC or PowerDVD, with the same settings than my desktop computer (spdif enabled)?

Seeing as the desktop version of the Xtreme Audio doesn't support Game Mode or even have the X-Fi chip on it (card is basically nothing more than a renamed SB Li've 24 bit/Audigy SE), I don't see how the notebook version can be any different. That and from looking at the specs for it I don't see anywhere that it even mentions anything about Game Mode, never mind EAX.

  • Bizarre Audigy 2 ZS Professional Surround Problem

    Hey there,
I'm posting because I've tried everything else, and apparently I can't call tech support because I've had my card about 2 years now. ?Anyhow, I have an Audigy 2 ZS Pro, and it's been great with my 5. surround system until about a couple months ago. ?At that point, it stopped recognizing my center, back left, back right, and subwoofer. ?However, sound still comes out of the speakers and woofer when I play music (although I think the balance may have changed), but in games if a character is talking directly in front or behind me, I cannot hear them; I need to turn so that the sound source is coming out of the left or right front speakers.
When I open the speaker settings or Creative Diagnostics tool and run the test, I hear Front Left and Front Right perfectly, but absolutely no sound comes out when the Front Center, Back Left, Back Right, or Subwoofer are supposed to be playing. ?As sound clearly plays in all speakers and the woofer in iTunes, Rhapsody, etc., I'm 99% sure they're connected properly. ?I connect to the speakers using the external I/O hub, and use the Coaxial Cable.
I have a AMD-processor computer running Windows XP SP2. ?I have tried wiping my computer and reinstalling Windows and updating drivers (when I update the drivers, the EAX console will no longer load, and neither will the diagnostic tool, and the surround sound still has the same problem. ?As such, I'm using the original drivers so I can access the applications), but neither have fixed the problem.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! ?No matter what I've tried, I cannot seem to get the software to recognize my non-stereo speakers or subwoofer. ?I'll be happy to provide any more information to help figure out what's going on.
    Thanks in advance,
    Aaron

  • Surround problem

    Hey there
I have a Sound Blaster Li've! 24-bit (it's a very normal 5. sound card with 3 digital output slots). I'm using this card since two years on my Windows XP computer and everything worked fine. When I started the creative sound test (the voice saying "front left", "front right" etc.) everything was correct. Now, since three days, I only get sound on front left and front right boxes. I can stick a headset in my sound card and I only get sound on front left and front right (so the problem is not the surround system). The voice saying "center", "surround left" and "surround right" also appears on front left and front right, so this is really very strange. What could be the problem? Are there any drivers or software / middleware that could disturb the surround sound card? I uninstalled and reinstalled the Sound Blaster Li've! 24-bit driver, but the problem remains.
Would be very nice to get a hint, thank you in advance!
    Florian
P.S. When I start a movie on PowerDVD, in the settings I can only choose 2 channels (stereo). Former I was able to choose 6 channels...Message Edited by praiser on 02-22-200703:42 PM

    Florian,
Do you happen to install anything new(hardware/software) recently? Also, if you happen to have a logitech webcam, you can check these information out and disable your webcam AEC function.

BTW everything is OK with my amplifier because I tested it with the same cable on another PC, DVD and STB.
Im using winXP sp2 (instalation) which is upgraded via windows update to SP3 with all the latest microsoft updates and fixes.
Tried driver which came on MSI CD and also downloaded and tried latest audio driver from MSI site, played with different sound settings in control panel. But the problem is still there, googling this problem on the web last couple of days, unfotrunately all this without success.

  • Docking iPhone to DVD/surround problem

When I dock my iPhone to my DVD/surround sound system the volume from surround sound is extremely low. It used to play fine how can I fix it

The Apple Composite AV Cable or Apple Component AV Cable will work through your DVD player input jacks or even your TV input jacks.
Try to make sure that there is power nearby. I used to be able to watch videos running from the battery on the iPhone. However with the latest software upgrade, one of the battery saving "features" is that after a minute or so with the USB plug not connected, the video signal cuts out. The continues to run, but without the video.
I hope Apple fixes this because I just realized that it makes it really difficult to use in a vehicle with composite jacks into the entertainment system. Apple, if you want this as a battery saving feature, make it an option in settings. I need to turn it off so the kids in the back can watch videos for a couple hours in the back and then I can recharge when we get to the stop or hotel with the laptop or wall charger.

  • Issues importing photos.

I'm am trying to import 593 photos directly from my 5D Mark III into Lightroom 4.4 using a USB cable.  I received the following error message: "Some import operations were not performed.  The following files were not imported because they could not be read (128)."  Please note, I had previously tried importing the photos prior to the Lightroom 4.4 update.  I also did the update to 4.4, restarted the computer and attempted the import again (received same error message).  The error message didn't indicate what was causing the problem so I attempted to import the photos to iPhoto and received the message "The following files were not imported as the file type .CR2 cannot be read."  All of my software is up to date, computer has been restarted numerous times and I always shoot in RAW. If 465 of the 593 photos were able to be imported to both photo programs, from the same CF memory card, and the file type/format did not change between photo shoots, why would 128 be unreadable?  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

I don't have any suggestions... but you are not alone in terms of import issues.  There are several other threads on here because the 4.4 update did something to mess up the import process.  My problem surrounded problems importing from mixed media cards, CR2s and MOVs.  So far, knock on wood, I have not had problems with cards that just have CR2s!  I wish you well and hope Adobe fixes these import issues.  It should be noted AGAIN... that even if LR is rolled back to 4.3, the issues remain after a 4.4 install.

  • Rear speakers mapping over front speakers Inspire 5.1 Digital 5500

When I wanted surround on my pc a few years ago, and didn't want to buy a new speaker set, I hooked up my Inspire 5.1 Digital 5500 to my Audigy 2 ZS. The only way to do this was by plugging the different speaker inputs directly from the subwoofer connection panel into the various output ports of my card. Thus skipping the 5500's decoder/volume control device which is only hooked up to provide power to the sub/speaker system. Volumes are set on the audigy card itself.
This has worked fine for a few years and gave no problems whatsoever upto now. Even to the point where I replaced my Audigy 2 for a X-FI Fatality because I thought my soundcard was screwed. With the X-Fi it worked correctly for a day and then it went wrong again. I can't get it to work right and am clueless what the problem is. But I presume it's something in the speaker system.
    What happens is as follows:
My rear channels are so soft they almost sound muted. Changing the settings/levels in the speaker settings or THX calibration doesn't make any difference whatsoever. And the majority of the sound that has to go to the back gets mapped on the front speakers. This is also the case with the speaker test and not a dolby/dts/surround problem.
    Front Left is ok
    Front Right is ok
Front Center gets played by Front Center AND Front Left (soft volume) AND Front Right (soft volume)
Rear Left gets played by mainly FRONT Left (and very softly on Rear Left)
Rear Right gets played by mainly FRONT Right (and very softly on Rear Right)
I rewired, checked cables, (replaced the soundcard from Audigy 2 to X-FI), reinstalled drivers and reinstalled windows. I'm now clueless and got no idea how to get it fixed.
I also tried hooking them up through the optical cable on the X-FI bay and having them properly wired to the 5500's decoder device. But that was even less successfull (only getting a lot of static white noise and no audio signal whatsoever) I also read this won't get me surround anyways except for when true surround sources get played (dvd playback etc), so I stopped going down that path and have them back on the normal minijack plugs.
Please help. I don't want to have to invest in another speaker system. Especially not after the expensive audio card replacement which apparently wasn't necessary.
I also don't get it how a rear signal can end up on the front speakers. When they are seperate cables. Or is there a decoder in the sub-unit as well which may have been broken?
    Thanks in advance.

  • LF a home theater with analog inputs to support my creative x-fi 5.1 card. Budget is 225.

My card does not support true surround sound in anything other than movies through SPDIF so I need to get a home theater that has analog inputs. Could someone recommend me a good speakers system for 225 or less. I current have a 1000 watt JVC TH-G30 that uses SPDIF. Thanks for any help
My card is USB is why this is an issue.

  • Network Time & Clients logged in as non-admin users

    My original post started here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3866263#3866263
To give a run down of what's going on:
    1. I have multiple machines running from 10.2.8 to 10.4.8
    2. When they are logged into a non-admin account, the Date & Time will not synchronize (it will when using an admin account, though). The clients are pointed to time.apple.com
    3. It was suggested to point the clients to one of my OS X Servers (running 10.4.8).
    4. I went through the Network Services guide to make sure I set everything up correctly and tested a couple of machines (one running 10.2.8 another running 10.4.8) to see if they would synchronize with the server. They would not, and the message that appears in the Console is "no server suitable for synchronization found". I've tried using the IP address and the .local name of the server, each with the same results.
So my question is: Is there something that I'm missing (server side, client side)? Does anybody have any further suggestions?
    Ben

Well NFS is not running on my server except for the rpc.lockd that showed as running. I set it now not to start and the only nfs process that still starts is nfsiod. I can not seem to find a way for this to be prevented from starting. If I have NTP and "Set Time Auto" on in SA they seem to butt heads.

On the client side no matter how many different ways I try to configure the server I get "No server suitable for synchronization found" i know the client setup is right. On the server I still can't get NTP to work right and I'm not alone as i see. This is a simple protocol and simple network service. People seem to be having problems with NTP since 10.4.2 and now 10.4.8 can't make a simple thing work. With all the other surrounding problems in tiger/Intel (SMB, memory leak intel, no Link Agra Mac Pro, etc.) server I'm really disappointed.
I'm at the point of a clean install to try one more time and I will bring the LDAP Archive and a mail backup with me. I plan to configure all other items manually in the hopes of fixing some issues. In the good old days Apple Servers just worked. Now with every update we pray they fix a problem.
Has anyone else fixed this cause it is starting to effect my keberos keys. (mumbles, should have stayed with 10.3.9)

  • 5.1 Surround over HDMI: Solve one problem, another rises up.

UPDATE 1:  After a good night's sleep, and after doing a bit more reading on alsa-project.org (big props to this page), I managed to get a much better ~/.asoundrc together.  It solves all my problems, and I can do everything I need.  I've preserved the post below in case anyone else runs into these issues, and I'll post my solution as a response to this post.
UPDATE 2:  Looks like I celebrated too early.  Got more strange problems.  Screw it, I'm going back to PulseAudio.  I just wrote a wrapper script to kill and restart Pulse for applications that really, really need ALSA.
Okay.  I've almost completely worn out my fingers trying to get this working.  I feel like I'm playing Whack-a-Mole.  This is a bit of a lengthy post, but I'll try my best to describe every problem I've encountered in as much detail as I can, followed by the solutions I found, followed by the problems each solution brought with it.  By going through everything this way, mole by mole, hopefully it'll be easy to follow along and help me come to a universally working solution.
    Summarized Version of Problems:
5.1 surround works only on specific applications which are robust enough to allow me to manually specify audio output options, and only if ALSA isn't configured at all
once I've configured ALSA, sound works on every application, but it's all downmixed to 2.0 stereo from this point on
installing PulseAudio lets me choose 5.1 surround as a default, but brings with it its own problems and drawbacks, namely the lack of passthrough support for encoded streams
    Long-Winded Version:
I have my computer connected over HDMI to an AVR with a 5.1 surround speaker system.  At first, I didn't have anything configured in ~/.asoundrc (or its global equivalent, /etc/asound.conf).  Neither file existed, so everything was running off defaults.  I got the name and device number of my card from aplay, ran speaker-test and played a six-channel test file in mplayer.

Everything seemed well, all six channels played from the correct location on both tests, but I did realize that the device number of the card was 3, not 0.  A lot of applications that aren't as configurable expect the default card/device to be set properly, and audio won't work in those applications without specifying that in ALSA's configuration.  Knowing this, I set the following in my ~/.asoundrc:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card HDMI
    device 3
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card HDMI
    device 3
This, however, ended up causing more problems.  Oh, it made sound work on everything by default after that, but only for one application at a time!  That surpised me, as I thought ALSA's big advantage over OSS is that it can multitask.  Running the speaker-test the way I did earlier turned out fine, but when I tried playing that test file in mplayer, things got weird again. Here's the output from mplayer:

Why the hell is it looking for pcmC0D0p?  It should be looking at pcmC0D3p.  Did it not get the memo from ~/.asoundrc?  Urgh.
I've also tried '-af channels=6' in place of '-channels 6' but the same result happened.  It does the same thing without the '-ao alsa' option, I just specified it to trim down the output, so that I wouldn't be copying and pasting all kinds of other errors about not finding OSS or JACK or other things I don't have installed.
If I symlink /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p to /dev/snd/pcmC0D3p, it'll fix the problem, but that feels like one ugly kludge.  I'd have to do it again over and over every time I reboot, too.
Not sure if this would help matters or not, but if anyone knows how to change my card's device number from 3 to 0, I'd like to try that as well, but I'm not sure how to do that sort of thing.  I'm just guessing it might be worth trying, since everything looks for card0/device0 by default, and that kludge I tried earlier did have an effect, so maybe if we can just switch those device numbers with each other, everything would work smoothly without having to force anything through ALSA's configuration at all.  I believe card0/device0 belongs to the Host Bridge... is there a way to have them trade their device numbers for one another's in a safe manner?
I can also get it to play if I specify the device like I did in my first test, using '-ao alsa:device=hdmi', but that defeats the purpose of getting good defaults set if I still have to set everything by hand before I play something.  If I try playing the test file without any options, like so:
    $ mplayer Nums_5dot1_24_48000.wav
... it will play, but only in two-channel stereo, and the parts that should happen in the center, rear and LFE channels get downmixed into the left and right channels.
I can get it to work in aplay, though!  All six channels!  Not that I plan on using this as my primary multimedia software.
    $ aplay -c6 Nums_5dot1_24_48000.wav
The only solution I found so far that allows me to have 5.1 audio by default is to install the PulseAudio server, which is able to find a sink/source named 'alsa_output.pci-0000_00_03.0.hdmi-surround' and lets me choose that as my default.  Only problem with this is that PulseAudio has its own problems.
Aside from the crackling sound issues in some Wine games, Pulse also has a much bigger drawback -- a complete lack of passthrough support, meaning I can't use encoded streams such as Dolby DTS and TrueHD with PulseAudio.  I have a Harman/Kardon AVR and I'd like to get my money's worth out of it, so I'd really like to figure out a solution in ALSA without using Pulse at all.
Does anyone know how I can have my cake and eat it, too?  I just need 5.1 surround, by default, in ALSA without PulseAudio.
HUGE thanks to anyone who tries to help here.  This is really making me sad and frustrated, I've been using Arch for quite a while now and this is the first real big stumper I've come across that forced me to post a thread.  Otherwise I've been having a wonderful time.
Edited because I tried something different that removed *some* issues, but the above problems still remain.

Well, I thought I fixed it doing this...
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmixer"
    pcm.dmixer {
    type dmix
    ipc_key 1138
    ipc_key_add_uid true
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,3"
    format S32_LE
    channels 8
    rate 192000
    period_size 9600
    buffer_size 38400
... but then realized it strangely makes applications that run at 640x480 have no sound at all.  No idea why the video resolution is screwing up the sound, but that's what's happening, because if I set the resolution any higher, the sound comes back.
I'm going back to PulseAudio, I feel like ALSA is mocking me.  I wrote a wrapper script for the few times where pure, Pulse-less ALSA will be necessary for me.  Here it is, in case it helps anyone else.  I've tested it with XBMC, it turns off Pulse and allows ALSA to pass through encoded streams unhindered.  It also works with some Wine applications that have scratchy audio glitches in Pulse.
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "autospawn = no" > $HOME/.config/pulse/client.conf
    pulseaudio --kill &> /dev/null
    "$*"
    rm -f $HOME/.config/pulse/client.conf
    pulseaudio --start &> /dev/null
I'm removing the SOLVED tag because technically I didn't resolve any of my original issues, I more or less gave up on what I wanted to do and found another way to satisfy my needs, but it still isn't as elegant as I had hoped for.  In any case, I'm done with this issue for now and the forseeable near-future, but if anyone has anything further to add, feel free.

  • Problems with HQ-2300D headphones. Lack of surround sound and other minor probs.

I've bought Creative HQ-2300D, and I am disappointed so far.
My first problem was instructions. I am not trying to insult anyone, but the booklet didn't instruct anything. It merely explained what the buttons did and what did the pictures mean (as if I can't recognize a notebook when I see one). The diagram did not include PCs, either.
Regardless, it wasn't useless as finally I've made the headphones & the decoder work. I was surprised that the cable connecting my machine and the decoder was short and thin. Very thin. Here's what I had in my bundle, aside from the decoder, headphones, and cheap Energizer AA batteries:

"A" is used for connecting the headphones to video game consoles, I gathered, so I put it aside, since I needed to connect the headphones and decoder to my PC. I tried using "B", but couldn't fit the black thing anywhere. "C" worked. Did I get it right?
I tried music first. Horrid. Bass sounded blurred out and what closely followed could only be described as hands clapping with bass at zero. After messing around with settings, I've managed to reduce that effect to a minimum. Then I've tried watching a movie, and the sound quality was actually very good. Although I've been watching a DVD, I didn't notice surround sound.
Then I've tried games. Half-Life 2 and then Doom 3 with EAX patch. The sound quality is admirable, but I didn't notice surround sound. Is there anything I need to tweak? Also, there's faint noise after low sounds.
Are the headphones defected, or what?
EDIT: Forgot to mention my soundcard is X-Fi Platinum.

I'm really sorry for the double post, but after thoroughly reading the instructions again, I've managed to eliminate that faint static by pressing Dolby Pro Logic II and Dolby Headphones buttons simultaneously and holding them for 2 seconds.
But the surround sound is still absent. I thoroughly tested with the helicopter sound circling you, with both CMSS-3D on and off, I fired up Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and tested if there's any difference between front and back, with both CMSS-3D on and off. I closed my eyes, and I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from.

  • Problem with NFL Network Surround Audio

    Hi,
Except for the first game of the season, NFL Network is not being sent to my Motorola HD QUIP 71001 in Dolly Surround sound. It is connected to my Kenwood receiver via optical cable. All the other channels on FiOS behave correctly, but it seems like for some reason V* is not broadcasting the games in surround. Meanwhile Verizon is broadcasting NFL Red Zone games in surround.
Is there any compelling reason why Verizon is doing this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

According to other posts, the NFL Network (HD) is not sending full surround (Dobly 5.1) but only encoding at Dolby 2.0.  AFAIK Verizon only passes on what it is fed from the source network (with the exception of some of the premium HD channels which are supplied in MPEG-4 and have to be transcoded to MPEG-2).
