5.2 Apple TV update error solution

I purchased an Apple TV gen. 3 in December 2012. It updated itself flawlessly the first two times.
Then, the recent 5.2 update came along. It would download the update quickly, but as it prepared to install, it would lock up, even in left to complete for 10 hours.
I tried unplugging it and rebooting and repeating it. No luck. It still locked every time the update was attempted. Given that it was locking up with no resolution, despite hours on the phone with Apple, I returned it for a new unit.
After install, the unit asked to update. Again it downloaded the update quickly over Wifi, but would fail on install with either the nebulous "there's been an error" or a message that the file was corrupted! Apple suggested I purchase a micro-USB cord and sync with iTunes.
This gave the same file corruption error. We tried this several times, to no avail. However, initially plugging in the Apple TV would launch iTunes. Eventually it stopped auto-launching iTunes. At this point, Apple suggested I plug it back into my TV proper.
It still downloaded the update and then failed.
Apple then recommended I move any audio speakers adjacent to my entertainment center. Still, no luck. At least the new ATV was not locking up.
So I just kept restarting the unit or unplugging it and allowing it to reboot, then updating.
Eventually, for whatever reason, the update completed successfully. It's difficult to know which of the many things I tried that did the trick, but I suspect it was multiple restarts and reboots that did the trick.
It took two days, a lot of time on the phone and a return to the Apple store, but now I have the benefits of 5.2 up and running like new.
I encourage others to try as I did, starting with reboots and restarts, repeat till it works (it took  3 or 4 repeats till it worked).

Thanks.  I've been going batty trying to get the update.  It downloads, starts the Step 1 install then throws an error that says download failed please try again later,  When you say OK it sits on the Step 1 of 2 status bar forever with no movement.  "do not unlpug your Appple TV while updating" I WISH...

Any Ideas of how to solve this one?

After reading all these posts, one by one did not resolve my problem until I got the very end.  Regardless of what step would resolve your problem, these are the steps I would recomment to everyone for a what seems to be a safe and fool-proof upgrade to iTunes 10.5.
    1. Stand alone upgrade to the latest Quicktime version
    2. Go to control panel and "change" then select repair to the following applications in the order specified by the post on Oct 27. (Notice I skipped Quicktime because it had been upgrade manually, and Bonjour did not have a "repair" option)
iTunes; Apple Software Update: Mobile Device Support; Apple Applications Support
Some of these applications may not appear if they do not apply to your configuration (no iPhone, or no iPad, or other apple devices).
Once all updated, I did not need to restart nor launch any applications, I simply went straight into the 10.5 upgrade, and where it normally got stuck, this time the installation continued for a while longer until it completed successfully.
Great work everyone who contributed!  Thank you very much!

  • ITunes won't open ; Apple software update error

When I double click iTunes, the computer thinks briefly (hourglass) then does nothing.  iTunes won't load.
    QuickTime Player opens fine.
But Apple Software Update now gives me a strange error message.
Anybody know how to interpret it?  Might it be linked to my iTunes not loading?

I'm having similar issues on PC Windows Ultimate 7 32bit.  Husband tells me iTunes updated last night on both his and my laptops (same OS), without asking for confirmation, which I thought was unusual.  Tried opening iTunes various times today and no response.  Restarted and still no improvement.
Tried repairing and uninstalling iTunes, very slow and glitchy but eventually seemed to have got rid of the software. Downloaded most recent installer link from Apple website and attempted reinstall, but it didn't get past the empty-barred status window.
Aborted and found an old installer from earlier back-up - version 10.2 something.  Install appeared to run smoothly but I still can't actually open iTunes.
Any help appreciated as we now have two laptops that won't shut down properly (seems they think iTunes is still running, even though we can't access it or close it in Task Manager), 2 iPhone 4s and an iPad that we can't use properly!

  • Apple Software Update error- "Entry Point not found"

I have had Apple Software Update/ iTunes on my PC for over 4 years. Today, randomly, when I went to update iTunes to the new 10.5 version, Software Update did not prompt me to update. That was odd, but I didn't realize anything was amiss yet at this point.
In iTunes, I went Help > Check for Updates which indicated the new version was downloaded. When promted whether I'd like to update, I hit yes, which even more oddly took me to apple.com to download iTunes all over again. (Normally, updates download from within iTunes and it's an update, not a full hour-long re-download.)
I didn't want to redownload iTunes (what would happen to all of my previously downloaded apps and music, set playlists?) so I opened Software Update, and got the following error message:
SoftwareUpdate.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point ?CreateProductsFromXML@CSUCatalogObject@@QAEXP6AIPAXIIJ@ZOIV?@CStringT@WV?$StrT raitMFC@WV?ChTraitsCRT@W@ATL@@@@@ATL@@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library SoftwareUpdateFiles.dll
    Strange, right?
    So my questions.
1.) Does anyone know why Apple Software Update would suddenly get errors? I've used it recently (this past weekend?) and everything was fine.
2.) Is there a way to fix Software Update, since I'll surely need it in the future.
3.) In the meantime, should I proceed with re-downloading the full version of iTunes again, and will it mess up anything I currently have in my iTunes library? Would I need to back it up or do anything to help ensure there are no further problems?
Thanks for your help. To say I'm confused is an understatement!

Well... after I posted this, some info from other posts came up and I found the answer!
In case anyone has the same issue that runs across this... this worked for me perfectly.

  • Apple Software Update - Error occures while trying to download

I've been trying all different ways to install the latest version of itunes.
I've tried downloading manually and installing but the installer doesn't launch.
So i've tried to do it using the Apple Software Update, but everytime it comes up with:
'Errors occured while installing updates. If the problem persists, choose tools > download only and try installing manually!
    I'm out of options!
    Any help?

At least we have some sort of error message from iTunes setup, unfortunately I don't know what it means.
You are logged on as an adminstator are't you, I didn't ask before. Do you have another account you could try installing from?
There are a couple of other things I would like you to try.
Empty Your Windows Temp directory. The following article tells you how towards the bottom of the page under: *Empty your Temp directory and restart*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
Does that allow the install to go through?
It would be intersting to see if the stand alone QUicktime installer works on your system, I still wonder if you have a more general problem with isntalls.
You can download from the following apge, you want the version WITHOUT iTunes.

  • Need help with apple software update error

some time ago i must have installed some update that maybe wasnt apple approved, or i dont know exactly waht happened, but i did a virus scan i had a bunch, got rid of them, and am now trying to reinstall itunes(i uninstalled because it was acting funny probably because of the viruses) and i cant because it has an apple software update that is preventing the new install from occuring when i go to add/remove it telle me that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable", ive tried to find the file applesoftwareupdate.msi, but nothing. so what can i do, i just got an ipod touch and i cant f ing use it, please please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'd recommend trying to uninstall everything - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976 .
If that doesn't resolve it, I'd recommend going through it, or try installing through another user if you're able to.

  • Cannot install iTunes 10.7 on Windows 7. Getting "a program required for this install could not be run"--Apple Software Update is not installed, so updating it is not a possible solution.

I was following the process of unistalling all Apple software and reinstalling iTunes. But I am getting an error that says "a program required for this install could not be run."
Other threads recommend updating the Apple Software Update module, but that was uninstalled. So if it's part of the problem, updating it is not a solution.
    Windows 7, 64-bit, SP 1 installed.

For what it's worth, at the point the installation fails, Bonjour, Apple Application Support, and Apple Mobile Device Support all show as installed on Control Panel. Apple Software Update has a link on the Start Menu but does NOT show as installed on Control Panel. Is there a way to install this separately from iTunes?

    Ken Powers (Last update 9/25/2006):
One additional note regarding Max Ustinov's comment:
If you have multiple instances of SQL Server, you will need to repeat this process for each instance. For example, I have a default instance and a named instance. I must add the appropriate permissions to the bin folder of each instance. The folder for the default instance is the same one Max showed us:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin.
The folder for the named instance is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\OLAP\bin.
The folder requiring the permissions will be shown in the event regarding "msmdctr90.DLL".
    Max Ustinov (Last update 9/10/2006):
I had 2 instances of this event in a row on a SQL 2005 Server. The first error stated "Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.CRT.mui. Reference error message: Access is denied". The second error immediately after said "Generate Activation Context failed for C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin\msmdctr90.DLL. Reference error message: Access is denied". These errors may also be accompanied by event 1008 and 1023 from source Perflib.
I found that these errors are caused by the "Performance Logs and Alerts" service if it runs as "Network Service”, which is a member of "Performance Log Users" local user group. Although the individual DLL permissions are set, this group does not have enough permission to SQL AS bin folder. To fix this problem, for the "Performance Log Users" local user group, modify or add "List Folder Contents" permissions in the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin.
    Mihai Andrei (Last update 8/15/2006):
According to Microsoft, there are three possible causes:
1.The component or manifest depends on another program or component that is not installed.
2.The manifest contains XML content that is not valid.
3.The user does not have the correct permissions.
See MSW2KDB for solutions to this problem.
This event occurs when you install SQL Server 2005 on a computer that is running the original release version of Windows XP, because SQL Server 2005 requires the GetSystemTimes function. The GetSystemTimes function is included in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and in later Windows XP service packs. See M922669 for details on this situation.
This problem can occur when you have version 5.2.3790.2426 or a more recent version of the Winlogon.exe program installed. See M914061 for a hotfix applicable to Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
This problem occurs because the run-time libraries are not installed on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server. The applications that use side-by-side libraries cannot run without the run-time libraries. See M923014 to resolve this issue.
    John Goulden (Last update 12/19/2005):
This event occurs in conjunction with EventID 32 from source SideBySide and it is caused by an application that was not packaged with all of the necessary runtime files. In my case this was caused by the Logitech SetPoint software and was solved by getting the appropriate C++ 2005 Redistributable Package.
    Ionut Marin (Last update 7/4/2004):
When you start the Date and Time tool in Control Panel in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition, the Date and Time Properties dialog box may not display the date and time correctly. See M841082 for a hotfix applicable to Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition.

So is it just me, or is Mavericks a bust?  My MBP runs much hotter since the upgrade. Why do I need ot sit around watching Activity Monitor, manually controlling my fans, and deleting extensions that I enjoy using. Don't even get me started on the Quicktime/Mov issues. I had none of these issues on Mountian Lion. Searching these forums, I see it's not just me. Why would Apple release a new system w/o peoperly testing it on MBPs?
I don't have time for trial and error solutions. I've tried the obvious ones. No help. Is Apple offering a way to downgrade back to Mountain lion?  Or better yet, a Mavericks update that adresses these problems? As of now, I want out of Mavericks ASAP.
My processor is 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7.

13inch MBP purchased ust over a year ago- 1-13.

Nope, it'a not just me, see above. And yup- I'm backed up, But I don't own a Mountain lion install disc. That's why I was posting here in the first place. Thanks
Nobody owns a ML install disc - ML was only ever distributed as a download from the Mac App Store.
If you have a Time Machine backup, you can boot into recovery mode and restore from your Moutain Lion TM backup volume.  If you have a system clone, then you can boot from the clone, and just clone ML back onto your internal drive.
Going back to your previous installation from a backup should be trivially simply if you have the backup in hand.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does it go through properly this time?

I get an apple application support error when installing itunes. It says uninstall and re-install.  Does not work.  same message.  What is a solution?

Is that an error 2 message?
If so, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)
