5.25 Flopy with Beige G3?

Is it posible to still use the older 5.25 floppys with newer beige macs? I remember back in 96 using those old floppys with their pizza box shapped macs in middle school. Anyway on getting this to work? Thanks

You were probably using Macintosh LCs of some sort with the Apple //e card in them, which would allow you to hook up a 5.25" floppy drive to the Mac and run some old ProDOS software. Without that card you won't be able to use the 5.25" drive.

  • Display Resolution with Beige G3

    Hello,
I am running a G3 Beige with an OWC G4 500 MHz OWC upgrade processor. The machine is running Mac OS 10.4.8 well.
I love to have more choice in the display resolution. A few days ago, I accidentally touched a couple of things, and was able to change the resolution to a higher one. However, when i reboot the machine later, the magic disappeared. I cannot recall what I did to increae the choice of display resolution.
Can you tell me what I can do to change the resolution from 832X624?

    You want separate Syncs.
The CRT is supplied with data for its Red, Green, and Blue Electron guns on pairs of wires (or coaxial wires) reserved for them. The CRT sweeps the electron beams across the face of the display and "lights up" one row of dots, then steps down one row, returns to the left side, and gets ready for the next row.
There is no row buffer in the CRT, it displays the Red Green and Blue data "live", 60 or more times a second. The data for each row is supplied at the right instant to display it properly across the row. In order to position the beam properly to display the correct row data, the CRT must know when rows and screens start and end.
Horizontal Sync - tells when a row should start and end. The beams are "blanked" during Horizontal Retrace time.
Vertical Sync - tells when the entire screen should start and end, and the beam should be brought back up to the top. The beams are blanked during the manyrow_timeslong Vertical Retrace time.
Some cheaper monitors combined the Horizontal and Vertical Sync together electrically and provided the combined signal as "Composite Sync". The CRT was responsible for pulling the separate signals out of the composite.
The other trick that saved one more pin in the cable was to combine the Composite Sync information onto the Green data signal. The CRT had to dig out both Horizontal and Vertical Sync from the Green data line. This had a tendency to make the Green data less crisp.
Macs have always provided separate Syncs. Except, perhaps, for the very first Mac-II displays, genuine Apple Mac displays have accepted only Separate Syncs.

  • Mighty mouse compatibility with Beige G3

    Hello,
I have an interesting problem with trying to connect a mighty mouse to my beige G3. When I depress the mighty mouse button, the computer thinks it is a control-click rather than just a normal click. This seems to happen about 80% of the time if I can recall correctly. (a control-click brings up a submenu of other choices rather than the regular single click.)
I am suspecting the problem is because I am running OS 10.1.5. The mighty mouse is suppose to only be compatible with OS 10.2 and later. But generally, it seems to work fine on my OS 10.1.5 system - except for this control-click problem.
Would anyone know of any solutions to such a problem?
Should I try "USB overdrive" perhaps?
    http://www.usboverdrive.com/USBOverdrive/News.html
My other solution is to just use another USB mouse. My other USB mouse (from my blue and white G3) works fine on the beige G3. The problem is only with the mighty mouse.
    Thank you for any suggestions,

The final problem has now been solved. I am a little embarrassed about this because I now realize I had no clue how to operate the mighty mouse. All the problems listed above I have now discovered were due to my own operator error. Oops. I did not know the mighty mouse had a left and a right button! Its so elegant that you cannot see this. I thought that when you click down on a mighty mouse, it was always a regular click. What I discovered today was that the mighty mouse can sense if you click on its right side or its left side. What a smart mouse! It can distinguish between pressure on its left versus its right. If you click on the right side of a mighty mouse, that signals a right click. I wasn't aware the mighty mouse was so sophisticated. No wonder the submenus (that traditionally pop up when you control-click) kept appearing so often when I clicked the mouse - I must have been right clicking without being aware of it.
Problem solved. I suppose I should have read the instructions before I plugged in the mighty mouse.
    PS
I tried the free 30 day trial of USB overdrive [1]. Nice program. It wasn't necessary to operate the mighty mouse on my beige G3 but it sure is useful - especially for customizing the mouse buttons. Great program.
There is a beta version of USB overdrive that works for OS 10.1.5. Works very well.

  • Using B&W monitor with Beige G3

I would like to use a B&W monitor with the older Beige G3 computer. I know I would need an adapter but what kind and where can I get one? I see adapters at the Apple website but have no idea which one I should use.
Also, how can I use a USB Hub with it? Can I hook up the internet etc on the Beige G3? Right now I think, if I remember right, it still has 8.6 on it, but I'll probably want to up grade the system.
    Thanks

    Hello Susan,
As the MacHead says, adapters may be found on eBay without too much trouble - try to find one with a good picture, as there are several varieties (for converting both directions) - but you're really better off with a good graphics card. My favourite is the 32MB Radeon Mac (not 7000) PCI version (not AGP); they pop up every week or two on eBay and run about $25.
As to USB, beware the USB gremlins! If you simply buy a USB card and plug it in, it doesn't work. In order for the Mac Operating System to "see" the USB card, you have to reinstall the Operating System from a retail, full install OS CD with the USB card already in place. If you're thinking of upgrading to OS9, now is the time to do it; just get that full install orange-nine-on-a-white-background OS9 CD, remember to plug the USB card in first, install OS9 and you're all set. It will work as if it came that way. I like the Orange Micro combination USB/firewire card (eBay again), but Keyspan, Macally, SIIG, Belkin, generic, have all worked for me.
I haven't tried a USB hub on the beige G3 - I've just reached behind it - but I can't see that it wouldn't work.
applerescue.com used to be a good source for OS9 CDs, but it's site seems to be unresponsive; eBay is not a good source for OS9 CDs, since there are a lot of people trying to sell you grey labels, burned copies, true copies, copies that ought to work (but don't), &c.,&c. If you need, I'm sure someone here has another good source.
OS9 - or 8.6 - should work just fine on the internet, although sometimes your ISP will not be familiar with it and try to tell you it can't be done. That's because they haven't run their standardised tests on OS9, and don't feel they can guarantee it (or because their installer has never seen it before). Insist.
A router is a handy accessory at this point for security and spam avoidance; if your ISP doesn't supply one, get it yourself.
Anyhow, hope that helps, and good luck!
    Jon

p.s. update: yes, the video card will have a different plug sticking out the back - a "VGA" plug instead of a "DB15" - three rows of (fewer) little holes instead of two.

  • Can I use LCD monitor with beige G3 233 mhz desktop?

    Dear all,
I have a beige G3 desktop and want to use an LCD monitor with it.
I work mostly in OS9, but browse and email in OS X 10.3.9.
My Mas has the original video card in it, the ATI 3D Rage II.
Could I use a 19 inch LCD monitor with my Mac? Or would it have to be a 17 inch one.
I read on here that the mac treats lcd monitors just like CRT monitors.
what is the maximum resolution and monitor screen size I could use with my Mac?
    Please help.
I only have a dinky 15 inch CRT monitor and would like a bigger monitor for Photoshop and animation work.
    thank you

    Both are probably contributing factors.
I know this will open up another can or worms, but you could consider overclocking your processor; most G3s will take a speed bump up a notch or two (266 or 300 in your case). It's relatively easy to do- search the forum for more info. As an alternative, a faster G3 chip (350-400) can be had rather cheaply from eBay (~$25). There are also a few 16MB Rage 128 cards on eBay, some as cheap as $10. Just make sure you get the Mac PCI version- AGP won't work. With the new video card and a speed bump, playing videos should be greatly improved. Just don't spend too much money on the old beast.

  • What to do with beige G3 parts?

Any suggestions? These are parts, not complete systems. I am not interested in trying to sell these components (does anyone still buy this stuff?), and I am reluctant to add even more waste to the megatonnes of garbage we create each year in Toronto. If anyone wants anything I have, just let me know; email me with a list of what you could use.
    Thanks.
    Eustace.

RE. e-mail address, of course totally obvious, but I'm just learning about discussion group navigation.
If an earlier post about returning to the 'campaign' office refers to the recent election, I can't imagine you are happy about the results in general (but I guess even Tories recycle now) but I hope your riding campaign went well if that was it.
Good on you to give the stuff away and if you find out about any non-profit orgs. in this region using Mac systems or recyclers pulling it apart for scrap let me know as I'd like to do it that way if it can be useful rather than just a pain dealing with old stuff.
There's got to be lots of ways for landfill diversion, it just takes a bit more work per usual. There's no good reason for it to end up buried under some field in Michigan.
Are you connected to a local MacUsers group? I'm not familiar with that part of the community but might provide some contacts.
If you have any interest in the used market, check out UsedMac.ca. That's where I picked up the connection with the Hamilton operation which I have yet to contact and seem to have misfiled the address in some wayward folder somewhere.

  • SCSI G3 Beige Minitower & 10.2.8 problems

Hello All & I welcome myself to Discussions,
I have a Beige G3 with a 8.50 SCSI HD. I know about the under 8G partition does not apply here because of the SCSI drive. I read somewhere, that OS X does not play well with beige G3's. Any truth to this?
My problem is connecting to the Internet. I've run permissions several times,
reconfigured my network settings, but still no dice. Would resettings the VPRAM help this issue. Are there any other tricks I might try to resolve this problem. I have another computer hooked up to the same Internet connection through a Cisco Ethernet hub and it works fine.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    JerBear65

    JerBear65,
Start with Mauro's comments about one connection at a time. The router will also make sure that you only get one bill from your ISP and not two. Bill's idea is worth a shot, too. We are asuming certain details so thanks for the updates.
You mentioned "The server "pop.ptld.qwest.net" can not be contacted on port 110." which makes me wonder if your hub is configured to treat the Qwest DSL modem as a peer. If it is, you will be billed for each computer it sees on your LAN. This is where the difference between a Hub, a switch and a router becomes very important. All it takes is one bill for a LAN party with 12 computers connected to the web and you could have purchased a router!
Proceed with your tests and check out some options here:

  • IMac display problems with gray to white gradients

My early 2006 iMac 20 has problems displaying gradients going from pure white to light gray. The web colors are #000000 to #EEEEEE (RGB 238 238 238 and 255 255 255)
My cheaper Acer and Fijutsu Siemens displays can handle this very well, but my iMac cuts the gradient prematurely and makes the gray darker. It looks as if the gradient on my iMac is a dark gray bar and a white bar, instead of a smooth gradient compared on the two other monitors.
I know the iMac doesn't have the best display for a designers need, but it can't be that 'cheap' or can it? I have tried to calibrate the display with both manual expert mode and using ColorSpyder. The latter gave me a blue/magenta colormode with beige gamma each time, so I gave that up.
The frustration is that I have use my iMac as secondary display and one of the other primary. It is not the optimal arrangement for an office environment.
Does anyone have the same problem or do they have any good advice for me as of what to do?

Thanks for all the speedy replies.
    Barbara:
This was reassuring news, I have been using Spyder2express with both the bundled calibration software and another professional (and high revered) software, which name is completely lost to me right now.
In both cases, with blinds shut, lights turned off and no other interference, I got a beige/dark result from both. With a bit of flicking with the settings, I managed to produce only a sick magenta result.
Your post reassures me that it can be done, so I am going to borrow the Spyder2 again and try all over, even read myself to death on the instructions once more.

  • Does OS X throttle hard disk performance on the boot drive?

Does OS X throttle hard disk performance on the boot drive?
I was upgrading my boot drive on a Mac Pro (1,1) from the original Seagate 7200.9 250gb drive to a new Western Digital Caviar Black model 1tb drive.
What surprised me was that disk benchmarking tools (both AJ System Test and Xbench) showed that the new drive had a 30% decrease in speed tests (primarily writes) when actually serving as the boot drive. Put back in the original drive, and while not as extreme as the new drive, it also shows slower write speeds while serving as the boot drive vs serving as an extra internal drive.
In Xbench, the writes are both sequential and random unchached writes, AJ System test is less descriptive, but the write speeds on the new drive are painfully slow to watch.
Hardware-wise, I'd think this new WD
Is there something in the OS that impacts this? Is it something that can be tuned or tweaked? I feel like I'm not getting the most bang for my buck on the new drive (or the old for that matter).
That said, the new drive reads more than twice as fast as the old, and I can feel the difference significantly on boot up (login screen appears faster) and all my startup items load up much faster after logging in.

    R C-R wrote:
Keep in mind that benchmarks don't really mean much unless test conditions are the same for each test. Benchmark each drive used as the boot drive & you get a relative comparison of their performance as a boot drive.
Which was really all I was after in the first place, and more as a curiosity than anything else, but it was just too unreal to see the drive lose half its read/write speed just because it was the boot drive. I'd expect, and accept, some relative drop in performance, but there seems like there was something wrong.
My problem gets stranger at this point. I was about to give up on using this drive, it was actually painfully slow to use and I'd gone back to my original drive. I thought I'd give it one more chance as part of some external drive enclosure stuff I was doing.
I put the drive back in Bay 1 on my Mac Pro, and it took forever to boot up, and when I ran benchmarks on it, they were only 5-10% of what I'd seen as a scratch drive, yes, that's 5% total. I actually got a score of 5.04 on Xbench. As a scratch drive, the thing gets in the 90's, and as boot drive it was getting 40s to 50s.
Anyways, after avoiding temptation to throw the thing against the wall, I tried putting it into an eSATA external dock, and booted from it. I am typing this from that boot session right now. The system booted up lightening fast, and benchmarks in Xbench are comparable to when it's a scratch drive, and AJA System Test just showed read/write speeds of 98 MB/s. This is what I would expect.
So now my issue appears to be that my Mac Pro, for some reason, is throttling, make that strangling, this particular hard drive when it is placed in Bay 1 and used as a boot drive. Some kind of hardware issue on the internal SATA bus? Incompatibility with this drive and Mac Pros? It's gonna take some more research or testing I guess.
Very frustrating. Reminiscent of my days with Beige Boxes running WindowsXP; certainly not the "it just works" experience I've grown to love since switching a few years ago.
I'll post back when I find out more.
Thanks again for the followup, and interestingly, I didn't get an email notification of an update to the thread. Odd.

  • Trying to buy OS X Tiger for my Power Mac

I no longer have my installation CD for my Power Mac G3. Can I just buy an OS X 10 CD from ebay and use it to wipe out and re-install the OS on my computer? It says it is once licence, how do I know it hasn't already been used?

If this is the Blue and White G3 tower, before installing OS X 10.4 Tiger, you need to run a Firmware update for this Mac. Not sure how to locate this for you on Apple's website because any older links to the firmware updated software no longer work.
    You need this firmware update.
PM G3 (Blue and White) Firmware Update 1.1
IF your PowerMac G3 is a beige G3, the highest OS X version you can install without special helper software is OS X 10.2 Jaguar.
OS X 10.3 Panther can be installed with the help of this app. OS X 10.3.9 Panther is really, real world end of line for OS X versions to be installed. OS X 10.4 Tiger will not work with beige color PowerMac G3 models.

  • Start up like a pc

hello. i put xpostfacto 4 on my power mac thinking it will let me install tiger from my iMac G5 dvd. no luck but now when i start up it shows almost like MS DOS start up then goes the my desktop and runs as normal. what happened?

From OWC site [I think you will be better off without this "fix", in as much as you already see problems]....
    Known Problems
Here is a partial list of known problems with the current version of XPostFacto. You can also consult the bug list directly.
In some cases, people have found it necessary to remove a Firewire card when installing Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). It is sometimes possible to reinsert the Firewire card after installation is complete.
It appears that the original iMac with certain CPU upgrades has a problem with the Firewire driver in Mac OS X 10.4. Removing the Firewire driver is a workaround in that case (at the expense of the loss of Firewire functionality).
OWCCacheConfig is often causing problems, especially with Panther. The workaround for the moment is to de-select the "Enable L2/L3 Cache" option in XPostFacto (I have made this the default setting for now). There are several other options for enabling the L2/L3 cache -- the forum contains a HOWTO on this topic.
Booting from a Firewire drive is sometimes problematic -- it seems to depend on which PCI card is used, or sometimes which Firewire devices are attached. One workaround for error messages which appear in verbose mode is to tap the keyboard -- it is not clear why that should help, but in some cases it does.
There are some problems with video in Panther on the Wallstreet Powerbooks, at least in some configurations. One problem is a kernel panic (or perhaps a WindowServer failure) which seems to correspond with high levels of disk activity. Another problem is colour problems. Enabling the "Use PatchedRagePro" option in XPF can help. This enables the PatchedRagePro.kext, which does two things. For video with a device-id of 0x4C50, it activates the ATIRagePro.kext. This is the equivalent of the Info.plist modification described at XLR8YourMac, except that it doesn't actually modify ATIRagePro.kext. For video with a device-id of 0x4C47, it disables the ATIRageProGA.plugin, which seems to solve a problem with using "thousands" of colours.
A similar problem sometimes occurs with Beige G3 video in Panther -- it is some kind of kernel panic or WindowServer failure. It is possible that version 3.1 will help with at least some cases of this problem.
The Panther video driver for Kanga (Original Powerbook G3) only supports 256 colours for the moment.
The Wallstreet Powerbooks sometimes boot from the Install CD in a way that doesn't pick up the special settings needed to get the Panther installer to work.
The video in/out on the Beige G3 A/V personality cards is not working.
The RCA video on the 7600 / 8600 etc. is not working -- both video in (planb) and video out (sixty6).
Some SCSI scanners are not working when attached to the 7300 - 9600 series.
System sleep is not working properly on the 7300 - 9600 series, or on the original Powerbook G3 (Kanga). However, it is working on the Beige G3s and Wallstreet Powerbooks.
In some configurations, audio output stutters or fails when an ATA/100 or ATA/133 card is in use. However, this does not affect everyone consistently. It is possible that the new audio driver in version 3.1 will make a difference with this problem.
The floppy drive does not work.
The ethernet port on ethernet-only Kangas (original Powerbook G3) is not working. (However, the combo modem-ethernet port is working).
Mac OS X 10.3 (and later) require a G3 or G4 CPU upgrade on models that did not originally come with a G3 or G4.
Volumes partitioned in Mac OS X are not bootable on older machines -- the utilities that work are Apple's Drive Setup (in Mac OS 9.x) and Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools.
Some PCI video cards which were working in Jaguar are no longer working in Panther. In some cases, the "Use old NDRVs" option can help, but in other cases it does not.
XPF tries to detect whether you formatted your disk with Apple's Drive Setup or Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools, but sometimes will generate a spurious warning (i.e. warning that you should use Hard Disk SpeedTools when you already have).

  • Anyone Here Upgraded A ZIF Card w/ OSX Installed?

Okay, I'm picking up a Sonnet Encore G4/1Ghz ZIF at weeks end. I already have a G4/500 installed and have all the applicable drivers for it and all's working fine. Now from what I can tell on the Sonnet site, there is no difference in the software for OSX needed for the ZIF cards, but I could be missing something.
Anyone gone this route already and put in a snappier CPU? Of course I'm all Doubting Thomas that it's not possibly going to be as easy as merely switching the hardware.. Is it?
    Deb.

I think you're thinking of the Crescendo? That's the PCI card.
I'm sitting here looking at the box the CPU came in, and it's an Encore ZIF G4/500. Sonnet's website also lists the second model as a G4/1.0Ghz, and both are compatible with beige desktops, as well as the B&W's.
The only difference is that the B&W models running the faster (over 700 mhz, though they don't make that card speed anymore) ZIF cards need to have a firmware update to get their bus speed clocked down to 66 mhz for the processor to work.
This is what they list on their website:
Encore/ZIF G4 500 MHz supports from Mac® OS 8.0 through Mac OS X (Version 10.2.8 for Beige G3 systems and 10.4.x for G3 Blue & White and G4 PCI Graphics systems).
Encore/ZIF G4 1.0 GHz supports from Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS X Version 10.2.8 in Beige G3 systems.
Encore/ZIF G4 1.0 GHz supports from Mac OS 9.2 through 10.4.x in G3 Blue & White and G4 PCI Graphics systems; OS 9.2 is required to perform firmware updates*.
*Encore/ZIF G4 1.0 GHz upgrade requires the installation of a supplied firmware patch; you must boot your computer in Mac OS 9.2 (installed on a local hard drive) in order to run the firmware updater application.
    Hmm.
I was just wondering if anyone had jumped to a faster upgrade..
    Deb.

  • Beige G3 with Pro Tools Freezes Every Time I Use PT (why I have the G3)

    Please, if anyone can help....
I GOT my beige G3 running which had died and refused to reboot when last I had tried running Pro Tools. I GOT Pro Tools 6.1 reinstalled and running... and then when I was back in Pro Tools again on my newly-running system, I tried to "Save Session Copy" (including saving audio files), it froze. It seems whenever I ask Pro Tools (specifically, haven't had this problem with ANY other memory-intensive program) to do something even mildly memory-intensive, it freezes. Not just the program freezes, the whole computer does. And once again, the computer then refused to reboot. I tried running First Aid and Repair Permissions and so forth booting from the OS X.2 CD. No dice. I erased the 7.8 gig section (the bootable section) of the hard drive. Tried to re-install the OS. It freezes mid-install every time now. Didn't used to freeze (though always bogged down a bit from time to time). Then I tried erasing the WHOLE 120 gig disk (while weeping bitterly) and re-partitioning the 3 sections (as a Mac-person-who-knows-more-than-me instructed me to do- - was the only thing that worked- - the first section being 7.8 gigs) and reinstalling the OS. Still freezes when I try to install. I have to move the mouse around frantically just to keep the computer from freezing while erasing the drive (this actually works- - moving the mouse around).
I tried putting the 3 sticks of ram in different order- - they worked fine before- -the 3 sticks of RAM collectively add up to 600-something- 1 stick of 128 and 2 of 256 or whatever that amount is- - the 2 were originally bought for a "stripped" blue and white I had bought, but the blue and white makes heinous buzz-beeping sounds when I tried to run it most recently, though it worked for a while before. Also, the beige worked fine before with these same sticks of RAM installed, but this seemed maybe memory-related so I thought I'd experiment...?
Anyway, I have A LOT of extras plugged into this thing. The one that acts the most buggy is the TDK DVD-R drive I installed a couple years ago. The model is "Indi" something or other as I recall. It has always consistently done this weird thing where, after booting the computer, if you eject one disk (it will only eject if you drag to the trash) and insert a second disk (since booting), it will not allow you to eject the 2nd disk until you reboot again. If you drag that 2nd disk to the trash, the CD icon disappears from the desktop as though it's been ejected, but the drive does not physically eject. I just put up with it, because I could deal and there had been so many other issues, and everything was working, this seemed like a non-issue by comparison.
I am also running a PC monitor via a small adapter (not a card). I have a USB PCI card going (which the mouse is plugged into)- never had a problem, but now sometimes the mouse freezes on startup too and won't move and I have to force-power-down with that button on the front as if it didn't boot properly. I have an Audio Media III PCI card in there (for Pro Tools). I have the monitor card in there, but don't need it for this machine. Was trying to test if it worked-- last I tested, it didn't-- I should obviously just pull it out.
Anyway, I'm having a ** of a time getting the OS back on there, and even if I do, once I put Pro Tools back on (the point of doing all of this and using the machine at all), it will likely freeze again and I'll be right back where I am right now. If I can even get there in the first place.
    Please please please help...
Blue and White G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Conventional wisdom for installing 10.2 Jaguar is to strip the machine back to the minimum Apple might have shipped in it, Install the OS, then add your extras back in.
Memory seems to be a big issue -- I suggest you use the free DIMM First Aid under Mac OS 9 to scan your DIMMs and be sure they are OK for your Mac, and not too slow:
    http://www.mactcp.org.nz/dimmfirstaid.html
I have found 10.3 Panther much simpler and more pleasant to install (even if you had to use XPostFacto 3.1 to do it) than 10.2 Jaguar ever was.

  • Using USB Printer on Beige G3 with Localtalk/Serial Port - How?

I have an Epson Stylus 740 which has both DIN 8/Serial port and USB connections, but the serial quit showing-up, so I want to connect via the USB connector. Is this possible?
Is there an adapter from DIN 8 Serial/Localtalk connector on Beige G3 to USB for Printer?
Or do I need to buy a PCI to USB card?
    Other solution?
    thanks

    Russo:
If you tried to connect an adaptor to the serial port that had a USB connector on the end, it probably won't work since the serial port isn't currently working. You'd need a USB PCI card to connect to the USB.
I have this same printer, originally used the serial port and then switched to USB when I got the PCI card. This has worked great.
You should see if something got turned off. Look at these:
Under the Apple Menu>Control Panel > AppleTalk - make sure the printer port is selected
Under Apple Menu>Control Panel > Remote Access > Modem (from the drop down menu) - make sure that the printer port isn't selected
Under Apple Menu > Control Panel > USB Printer sharing - make sure that is turned OFF.
You might also have to install drivers for the Epson from the disk that came with it. If you insert the CD and choose "custom install" you'll get another screen that allows you to choose the serial driver package.
Post back if you get it working (or don't).

  • SCSI CD Burner on Beige G3 with OS 8.6

I've been using a LaCie 4x CD burner with my beige G3 Power PC. It died a few weeks ago and I found some SCSI LaCie 4x4x16 drives on eBay. But they don't really work right. Only 1 or 2 sessions of multi-session disks mount, and the computer does not see a CD burner at all when I try to burn.
A quick search for drivers was not fruitful (I have not put a lot of effort into it yet). If I can't find a driver, what can I do? Can I upgrade the OS on this Mac?

I can't expertly address the first part of your question. My first suspicion would be of the drives. They are pretty old and in the optical drive world 4 years is about time for a drive to start showing its age. On the other hand they are third party drives so who knows what support they need. Since you had a LaCie burner before I would imagine the drivers would be similar and still on your computer. Exactly what model drives are they? Maybe somebody here can point you in the direction of drivers or may have some.
How much RAM does your beige have? 8.6 was the top of the OS8 line, but you could do OS9 or even OSX depending upon the computer configuration, especially RAM. Going to OS9 would not be unreasonable on a beige but it would require purchasing a set of (used) full retail installer discs. To comfortably run OSX on a beige requires pretty substantial hardware upgrades.
