5.5.4 RCPT TO argument is too long

I creaed a new address book list of 48 names and I want to send an email to this list.  I put myself in the TO: field and the name of the list in the BCC: field.  I've done this many times with other address book lists and have not had a problem.  But I am getting an error dialog:
An error occurred while sending mail.  The mail server responded:
5.5.4 RCPT TO argument is too long.  Please check the message recipient ", [email protected]..
.........." and try again
with about 12 lines of addresses specified there.  Somehow maybe it thinks one of the 48 email address is super-long, but I've checked all the email addresses and they all seem to be fine.  I think you're allowed up to 50 addresses in a list specified in the BCC field.  Any thoughts?

I found the answer.
It's a bash-related problem.
It's making a list of all that files, and this is too big.
If I change my command:
jar -cfi ../blues.jar .
the directory is visited file by file and there's no problem about 40.000 files (it only takes 20 minutes :)

  • Argument list too long

I got a directory of about 40.000 files.
I'd like to abuse jar for archiving those files because
    a) I'm used to the syntax of jar
    b) I thought that enabling indexing, the search for a single file could be very fast.
    I said:
    > jar -cfi ../blues.jar *
    and I got:
    > jar: Argument list too long
I got this error on linux, using jar of jdk-1.4.2-beta.
Is this a problem only of the linux-jar?
I started to test this out on an windows pc, but hadn't the time to finish the test, but it looked, as if it would work, because it didn't fail for the first 20 Minutes :).
(It fails nearly immideately on linux).
Is this an error of jar, or of bash?
Would it work, if I create a shell-script, which adds the files one by one?
Will an index really speed up the search for a single file?
It seems to me, as if only directorys are mentioned in the index-file?
Is there a well defined maximum of files that can be put into a jar file?

How large is ARG_MAX in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/limits.h and
    MAX_ARG_PAGES in ./include/linux/binfmts.h? On my system (RH6),
    ARG_MAX is 128K and MAX_ARG_PAGES is 32 (4K pages). The argument

  • Cp leads to  "error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long"

With certain PDF files to which I've added a lot of extended attributes (using Skim.app, a PDF reader/annotator which stores its notes in extended attributes), Chronosync and Finder drag-drops don't preserve extended attributes like they're supposed to (i.e. the notes aren't viewable on copies of the document). When I use cp to do they copying, the following message appears in system.log:
error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long
    Googling it returns no results

    Hi Derick,
error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long
I have no idea why you get this error when copying a file...
There is a max size for each extended attribute (about 3800bytes), and if I try to create (by using a simple C program) an attribute larger than this limit then I get "Argument list too long" error. But in your case you are trying to make a copy of an existing PDF file whose extended attributes should be smaller than the limit, of course (Skim has no magical power of creating an attribute larger than the limit; if the note is too large then I guess Skim just splits the note into two or more attributes).
Q1: do you get the error only if you (try to) copy a PDF file with large notes? or you also get the error for a file with only small notes? How about a PDF file with many small notes?
Q2: are you copying the PDF file to external volumes? If so, are you sure it is HFS+? What happens if you copy the PDF file to the same internal disk volume, for example
    cp your.pdf tmp.pdf

I get the same message with Mandrake 6.1.
But I had no problem installing Oracle 8.1.5 std under Mandrake

My guess is that Mandrake made some small change that broke the

  • Single user mode: Argument List is too long, PLEASE HELP

    Hey guys,
I recently posted a topic asking if any1 knew how to delete all png files on the desktop,
    Nt many people replied,
But anyway, I did some research and now I know how to do it,
but in single user mode (cmd + S),
When I typed in rm *.png
While I ws on the desktop in single user mode,
It came up saying Argument list too long,
Does any1 know how to fix this,
    Plz reply ASAP,
& if possible addme on Skype mark.davidson19, it wld b extremely helpful

If there are too many files expanded via the *.png wildcard, then the argument list length maximum can be exceeded.  The last time I checked, Mac OS X had a 256K line length limitation. (AIX was 1M, Linux 128K, Solaris 1M, Windows 8K (Cygwin env) - your mileage may vary with each operating system release).
If you have too many files to expand on the command line, then you can delete them in batches.  There are several ways to do this
    cd ~/Desktop
    rm [a-m]*.png
    rm [n-z]*.png
    rm [A-M]*.png
    rm [N-Z]*.png
    Or finer increments.
    You could use something like
    find ~/Desktop  '*.png' -print0 -depth 1 | xargs -0 rm
    And you can also use
find ~/Desktop '*.png' -depth 1 -delete
This being a Unix environment, there are most likely a dozen additional ways to delete all the .png files and avoid command line length limits.
As MrHoffman says, using rm and wildcards is a very dangerous thing to do unless you really REALLY know what you are doing.  If not, I strongly suggest having a recent full backup handy.  I actually suggest a backup regardless of how good you are in the Unix environment (I have multiple via different backup utilities preformed on a very regular basis;  years of experience has taught me you cannot be too careful with your data - it is worth far more than the cost of backup equipment).

  • FTP Error: 550 Arguments too long

I am getting "550 Arguments too long" error code with message while try to FTP list the files from solaris 9 by using NetComponents.jar. (remote folder has more than 16000 files) But I am able to FTP list greater than 30000 files properly from solaris 8. Does anyone have seen a similar problem?

    Hello,
I have the same problem. I connect to FTP server (Version wu-2.6.2+Sun) on SunOS 5.9. There is already patch 114564-09 installed. I try type "ls <directory>" command, where directory includes about 20 thousand files and FTP server returns: "550 Arguments too long".
When I try "ls /directory2" command, where directory2 is empty, FTP server returns:
550 /directory2/*: No such file or directory.
This behaviour is same as behaviour of unix "ls" command, if I had type "ls /directory2/*" in the command line on the empty directory and on the directory with too many files.
My conclusion: FTP server on SunOS have a new bug. It takes file list with "ls" command and appends to directory name "*" (asterisk).
Can anybody help me? Is there some patch to solve this problem?

To view your folio on your iPad you have two choices:
1 - If you built your folio offline on your local machine, choose the upload option from the Folio Builder fly out menu. All folios that were built online and any you uploaded are available for you to download when you log into ACV on your iPad.
2 - This is a MAC only option. Plug your iPad into your computer via the USB cable. With the iPad turned on and ACV opened you will see a Preview on [iPad Name] from the preview menu in folio builder.
I tested both of the supplied files after publishing them for the web from Edge and placing the html files in a web overlay. I previewed on both the desktop viewer and my iPad. Both worked as expected on the iPad. The Jams worked in a desktop preview but your logo just showed a red box. The white background is removed by selecting the transparent background option in the Overlay panel.
As Bob said, the desktop previewer is not 100% reliable. It is used for quick, down and dirty checking. It's always pest to preview on a device if something does not work as expected.
If it helps, I will share my test folio with you. Message me you email address.

  • ORA-01704: string literal too long and PHP

Ok all of you Oracle experts out there, I've had one heck of a day wrestling with this oracle stuff.
I've had a couple of posts/threads today with great success and currently I face another problem.
I'm using PHP/PEAR to execute my queries on an oracle table. I'm trying to store very long (2-3 pages) texts. Currently I'm getting a string too long error.
I've googled to find that there are certain limits when inserting into a table. The CLOB datafield may hold 4 gigs of text, but you may only insert 4000 bytes at a time. Or at least that's how I understand it.
Anyone got a work around for this? I've tried:
    OCIBindByName($sql,":fieldName",&$myVariable, -1);
But that gets me the error:
ocibindbyname(): supplied argument is not a valid OCI8-Statement resource
which is an actual PHP/PEAR error....I think...
Anyone out there have any work around suggestions? I really dont want to parse the insert statement into pieces each being less then 4000 bytes.
    Thanks,
    R

    <snip>
But that gets me the error:
ocibindbyname(): supplied argument is not a valid OCI8-Statement resource
    </snip>
Try check the enviroment setup for oracle in your apachectl (off course if you are using apache web server).
Just enviroment configuration in /etc/profile or .profile is not enough.

Did you keep any kind of external references to your pages/reports? From what it looks like, one of your report regions exceeds 2500 characters and APEX is having a hard time crunching it. See if you can find that page, then export that page, delete the region, and import the page on it's own later.
Not sure why it would be such a small area, though. I usually don't have any trouble until I hit 32K characters.

  • Spam report thread too long by now?

The present Spam report thread [4] was initiated over a year ago when the old thread was 190 messages long, because "...the previous thread ... has served its purpose but is getting too long to be read comfortably on mobile devices". Well, the present thread has well exceeded that mark, as it was 422 messages long at the time I started to write this message.
Wouldn't it be time to let the present thread rest in peace by the same argument that led to the closing of the previous one? Not that I use mobile devices to visit these forums, but...

The idea of closing Spam threads when they get too long and replace them by brand new ones is not mine. As I said in my opening message here, it was the official argument for closing the [3] Spam thread when it was 190 messages long. Well, the [4] Spam thread got 422 messages long and there was no official reaction, so I opened this thread to find if this was just an oversight.
A few days later, the [4] Spam thread was archived (and therefore closed) for reasons that were never explained, and a replacement one was no opened, so I tentatively opened a new one, the present [5] version, explaining my reasons for doing so:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/837370?tstart=0
Now the [5] Spam thread is 476 messages long (at the time of writing this), and it has not been closed, archived or replaced, so I don't think any participant should open a replacement one. This should be done officially by someone with the power to close the present version.
On the other hand, if the reason given for closing the [3] version is no longer valid, and the length of Spam threads has no importance whatsoever, I think this should be clearly stated. As I access the forums through browsers, the length of the threads does not affect me in the least, and I have no idea if it affects participants accessing the forums by other means.
