5 GB  SGA on 8GB RAM  HP Server 64Bit

Hi all
Recently three months we installed Oracle 10g Database on HP Server (having 4 XEON Processors) with Windows 2003 (64 Bit) OS and we have 8GB RAM.
We wished to have 5500M as the SGA Target but we could not configure more that 3800M on that machine as after that it would error and the database would not get start.
error messages would be like - Out of memory
OR
???? (not recollecting)
Now we are running with only 3500M as sga_target and not utilizing the full available RAM with us. Of course we are using in addition 1500M for pga_aggregate_target without any problem. Even if we increase pga_aggregate_target to 3000M there is no problem but that is not desired to us. We wish to increase sga_target.
We are getting excellent response timings on 3500M sga_target but as human nature would be , we wish to be more greedy and use the full available RAM with us i.e 8GB out of which we can safely use 7GB for Oracle instance. While deducting 1500M for pga_aggregate_target we would like to use 5500M for sga_target.
Any help is appreciated.

Benefits of Automatic Shared Memory Management
Automatic Shared Memory Management simplifies the configuration of the SGA. Before Oracle Database 10G, buffer cache, shared pool, java pool, and large pool need to be manually specified for the database. Under sizing can lead to poor performance and out-of-memory errors (ORA-4031), while over sizing can waste memory. This feature enables you to specify a total memory amount to be used for all SGA Components (buffer cache, shared pool, java pool, and large pool). The Oracle database periodically redistributes memory between these components according to workload requirements. Before Oracle Database 10G, the user did not have exact control over the total size of the SGA since memory was allocated by Oracle for the fixed SGA, and for other internal metadata allocations over and above the total size of the user specified SGA parameters. The new SGA size parameter SGA_TARGET now includes all the memory in the SGA, including all the automatically sized components, manually sized components, and any internal allocations during startup.
Configuring Automatic Shared Memory Management
Automatic Shared Memory Management can be configured by using the SGA_TARGET initialization parameter. If you specify a non-zero value for SGA_TARGET, the following four memory pools are automatically sized:
* Database buffer cache (Default pool)
* Shared pool
* Large pool
* Java pool
If you set SGA_TARGET to 0, Automatic Shared Memory Management is disabled. The default value of SGA_TARGET is 0.
The individual parameters used before Oracle 10G releases to specify the sizes of the automatically sized components have not been made obsolete. The initialization parameters that size these pools (DB_CACHE_SIZE, SHARED_POOL_SIZE, LARGE_POOL_SIZE, and JAVA_POOL_SIZE) are now referred to as auto-tuned SGA parameters.
The following buffers are now referred to as manually sized components:
* Log buffer
* Other buffer caches (KEEP/RECYCLE, other block sizes)
* Streams pool (new in Oracle Database 10g)
* Fixed SGA and other internal allocations
Note: STATISTICS_LEVEL must be set to TYPICAL (default) or ALL to use Automatic Shared Memory Management.

I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows programs I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

  • Whis is better: 8GB RAM with 2TB RAID 0 Scratch or 16GB RAM with 32GB SSD?

Having read much on performance, I am presented with deciding on which motherboard to purchase.  Given the the CPU is a constant (3.2GHz) and I am using Windows Vista Business 64bit, I am not sure which motherboard would support the most needed functionality that would be the best choice for Photoshop, especially with plugins and producing larger 16 bit Tiff files for HDI.  One board maxes at 8GB RAM but provides RAID configurations-in which I would dedicate two 1TB HD running at Striped (0).  The other configuration maxes at 16GB, but provides no abilty for RAID.  In this situation, I would dedicate a 32GB Solid State Drive or 1TB HD for the Scratch Disk.  Any ideas, or am I being too technical?
    Thanks, Jarold

Thanks for the reply.  I tend to believe that increasing more RAM would
be the first step in realizing noticeable performance improvements.  Therefore I will ensure that my motherboard provides at least 16GB of RAM for future expansion.
I will then attempt to overclock the CPU.  This is all new stuff for me, but something that I am willing to attempt.  My computer is only 7 months old, so I find it a little difficult having to replace the motherboard-which will require a new CPU.  This configuration should be good for another 6 months (possibly).
In addition, I will dedicate a drive for the Scratch disk.  Micro Center has a 32GB Solid State Drive for about $75 after rebate.  This particular drive's benchmarks test fairly high.
    Thanks again...

I recently installed Windows 7 Professional 32bits on my Macbook Pro using Boot camp. My macbook comes with 8gb RAM. However i just noticed that only 2.20gb of this is usable by Windows. Can anyone educate me why this is so and how i can increase it?

It is pure Windows question, not bound to Mac as platform - so better search for details on appropriate forums
The appropriate action is to install 64bit Windows, not permanently restrict the installation to less than half of the currently available Ram!!

  • Qosmio G50/402 - How to use 8GB RAM?

I have Qosmio G50/402 with 8GB RAM installed although the useable is only 4GB.
Is there any way to use the 8GB?

    Hello
    This can have different reasons.
Firstly you have to check if your notebook supports 8GB RAM. Check the specifications of your chipset but as far as I know Qosmio G50 should support 8GB RAM.
Furthermore it would be interesting to know what OS you have. To use full 8GB RAM you have to use a 64bit OS.
And what type of modules you are using exactly? In worst case the new module isnt compatible with your notebook. Normally the best option is using two identical modules from one manufacture, e. g. Kingston. I have very good experience with these RAM modules for notebooks so I can really recommend it.

  • Qosmio G50-12K - BIOS update for 8GB RAM support?

    Hi
I just upgraded my Qosmio G50-12k to 8GB RAM and installed Windows 7 64bit ultimate. The Windows see 8GB RAM but can only use 4GB. I have BIOS version 2.0.0 I wanted to upgrade to version 2.10 "P0060v210.exe"
When I run the BIOS update i get this massage [Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsepported OS or service pack installed.
I am really clueless on what to do. Can Qosmio G50-12k BIOS be updated to support 8GB RAM?
    please help !
    thanks allot eliot

    Hi eliotah,
In my opinion BIOS update is worth a try!
But I dont understand why you cant make this update. Have you installed Toshiba Value Added Package? In my opinion its necessary to start the BIOS update.

  • MBP Retina 13" (late 2013) 4GB RAM vs 8GB RAM

    Hello,
I am thinking about upgrading my current MacBook to the newest MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina display (base model: 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD). However, I want this computer to last for 3-3.5 years. Therefore, I am wondering how much difference does it make to have 8GB of RAM instead of 4GB? I am on tight budget so additional 200EUR for 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is very debatable (there is no option to get only 8GB RAM configuration).
My daily usage is very light, however: (1) I'd like to be able to play games like SimCity or Civ5, (2) sometimes I need to use "heavy" apps like IBM SPSS, (3) rarely I like to use photo editing apps.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks guys!

Look at the influence of RAM and SSD on processing CPU intensive applications in this display:
Note that once you have SSD, RAM becomes less important to performance.   Personally If the bank account is thin, 4GB RAM will serve you well.  Only in very High CPU intensive applications will it take longer but they will run.  Unless yo have another MBP with 8 GB RAM next to you, you will not notice the difference.
    Ciao.

  • Just upgraded to 8Gb RAM...Now what?

    Hi everybody,
I just upgraded my MBP to 8Gb of RAM. The plug-ins i use that can benefit from that are EXS24, Kontakt4 and Omnisphere. I don't see any OS level tool that can confirm me where the RAM is used(No Spectrasonics or N-I app showing up in Activity Monitor). I want to stay on 32-bit as most of my other plug-ins are not 64-bit ready yet.
When i went to the EXS24 virtual memory prefs, it was already set up to use the memory outside of Logic. Do i have to do anything else like untick the pref and reenable it after? In Logic or mainStage, when i enable the Omnisphere server mode, the CPU goes up to the roof. Anybody seeing this behaviour?
Feeling a bit futile to ask all that when you see what's going on in Japan right now, but if anybody has some cues or info links about going 8Gb RAM, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. If i understand well, if i want to stay with Logic 32-bit, i'll have to choose in the EXS24 pref if it's Kontakt and Omnisphere that get the other 4 Gb and EXS24 lives inside Logic boundaries or the opposite?

I would like to upgrade my MacBook Air 13" mid-2011 to 8GB RAM after seeing that the 2012 model supports 8GB RAM.  Does Apple or anyone else offer this service?  Thanks for all your replies.

No, Ram in the 2011 MBair is not upgradable.

  • Upgraded 2012 MACBOOK PRO 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB an alternate for RETINA MBP 15 or NOT?How good is its potential, reliability ?

I am a student and an aspiring filmmaker.I am also into digital cinematography (Canon 550D) and now will be venturing into editing. I am in DIRE NEED of help
I have a few problems regarding the purchase of Macbook pro.I live in Kolkata(India).I have been waiting for the past 1 and a half years to buy a Mac but after the release of Retina Macbook pro 15.I am left confused. Its near unupgradability and unreparibility rumors, delayed delivery, and 1st generation hardware issues especially the lack of Optical drive made me reconsider my decision of buying one.
I want to know whether I can go for the top model of Non Retina - 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1 GB Nvidea as an alternate choice for Retina MBP pro or NOT ?
1.I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. Something goes wrong after purchase and they send it back to US, is what the Apple officials said. Moreover they don’t keep one on a demo at Apple stores in kolkata. I have searched almost everywhere and have been to many resellers in my city but no use.
NOW,I am very sceptical about custom ordering a Macbook 15 non retina with High-Res 1680X1050p from US.I don’t know how much custom duty or expenses I have to pay and is it safe or not. Time is also a factor. Sadly, I have to buy one in Kolkata (my city) it seems.
    2. I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. I cannot pay that amount just for the screen. As far as speed is concerned, I plan to get an OWC SSD and a 16 GB OWC RAM in the future resulting in greater speed when comparing the configuration with Retina 15.That problem is solved.
My problem here is this: The web is filled with reviews and videos of Retina Macbook Pro and the upgraded Macbook Pro 15 is just no where, if you even find a few videos, they only feature unboxing videos of Macbook pro 15 (i7-2.3Ghz-4GB-500GB-500MB Nvidea).Other videos compare the 2.3ghz model with Retina 15 pro. They are not elaborate like the 15 Retina Pro reviews.
    1. I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.
    2. Is it necessary to buy APPLE CARE WARRANTY when buying a laptop from Apple. What are the benefits and how is it different form the normal customer care ?
    3. In short, a headphone for all purpose. I heard the HD 449 is not that good compared to HD 439.They say it is Jazz oriented. Another confusion  !
Finally, If you know anyone who knows about this configuration (15inch 2.6 8GB RAM 750GB) and its performance than please help me out my friends. Any small detail, input, you feel like please let me know. Please help me be sure and satisfied am buying my Macbook Pro very soon and I am awaiting your response.

Well, are you talking about a 750 Hard Drive or SSD?  If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast.  One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money.  Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions.  HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model.  The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical.  So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up.  The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram.  According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD.  Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.
