  • DVD set to wrong region and crashes when I try to change it

    I'm in Region 2. I only watch Region 2 DVDs, I only want to watch Region 2 DVDs. At Christmas, my DVD player was working fine with Region 2 DVDs. Today I tried to load another Region 2 DVD (for the first time since I updated the OS for the App Store, I don't know if that's relevant) and DVDPlayer tells me I'm set to Region 1, do I want to change?
    I have no idea why it thinks its set to Region 1 but yes, I want to change, so I unlock the padlock and select Region 2. DVDPlayer immediately crashes out completely with no changes made. I have tried rebooting, moving the com.apple.dvdplayback.setregion.plist and com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist and all sorts. It still crashes out. I can't find how I'm supposed to know how many region changes I have left, but as far as I'm aware I haven't used any. I get no dialogs warning me of having used any.
    Console reports these errors when DVDPlayer crashes:
    13/01/2011 22:03:45 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.dvdplayback.setregion[35408]) Exited with exit code: 4
    13/01/2011 22:03:45 com.apple.launchd.peruser.502[171] ([0x0-0x30c33c03].com.apple.DVDPlayer[35184]) Exited with exit code: 1
    Does anyone know how I can fix this so I can watch my DVDs again?
    Thanks

    Edit: I have found the DVD I played before Christmas and tried playing that, and that still works. However now that I have a DVD that allows me to keep DVDPlayer open, I have found the Region settings, and it still says that it's Region 1, with 1 Drive change remaining for some reason. The DVD that works is 2+4 PAL UK (Back and forth Region 2 only), as is the DVD that doesn't work.

  • NTSC All regions DVD on Region 2 player?

    I seem to recall that many (maybe most or even all?) PAL DVD players are able to play NTSC discs, if an NTSC DVD was created with all of the region options enabled would a region 2 player be able to play it?

    HI Wes - not really a coincidence, more of a marketing process to carve up the world into the different regions.
    Yes, Region 2 (Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, French overseas territories, Greenland) countries often also use PAL, but so do others not in Region 2 ( PAL covers most of Europe, most of Africa, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, North Korea to name a few). For example, New Zealand use PAL and are in region 4.
    The TV standard is the key, IMO - make sure your footage can actually be seen in those countries, and then make the disc region free (tick ALL of the boxes and make sure it has a region code mask of 0).
    My rather jaded view is that the regions simply helped ensure sales were optimised and have nothing to do with whether the disc will play back! But you are also correct in saying a lot of DVD players can play both standards these days, however I wouldn't rely on that when creating a disc.
    Finally, if your disc is being burnt in your mac (or PC), make sure that you tick all of the regions in the build/format dialogue as if you don't there will be a conflict between what you are asking and what is hard coded into the DVD-R you are writing to. Region codes really only come into play if you are using a replication process.

  • Why is there a limit on the number of times a "DVD player region" can be changed, and can it be adjusted for more region changes, or an indefinite number of region changes?

    Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
    Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed.
    Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

  • Multi Region DVD Please?

    I've travelled around a bit and I must now have DVD from pretty much every DVD region there is. Just bought the Mac book Pro and realized that you have to select one region and are limited to just 4 region changes
    Does anyone know (apple are you listening?) how to make it multi-region? Apple, do you have a upgrade? Is there software out there to help me (that does not invalidate my warranty). Or am I just destined to download TV and films from the pirate bay as it is the only way to ensure I can actually watch things rather than pay money for things and end up being locked out of watching them.
    Thanks to all in advance

    No.
    Buy an external optical drive, and use that to play your DVDs - those do not have the limitation in the drive firmware.
    You can submit feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.htm
    this isn't true! apple has to do this because they pay for the codec & this is a requirement from the hollywood goons put on it, per license agreement for putting it on the machine. buying external drive is silly!
    Use VLC, it plays anything.

  • Multi region DVD playback

    I have a 27" iMac and it's set to Region 2 for it's DVD playback. I used to have a cheap DVD player that could play any DVD region, but that went the way of the dodo sometime early last year. Now I have a stack of Region 1 DVDs that I want to rip to my hard disk, but any application I try (even VLC and Handbrake) refuse to play or rip the disk. It either crashes or appears to have frozen before spitting the disk back out at me.
    I was going to buy a cheap USB DVD drive in the hopes that it would play the DVDs, but I'm not sure if the region lock is part of the OS (therefore making the USB drive worthless) or part of the firmware on the internal drive (making the USB drive plausible).
    Does anybody have a solution? Free if possible.
    Thanks

    I'm in the same boat, but a bit worse off. I'm a Canadian, with a Canadian-purchased late-2008 Aluminum MacBook. BEST laptop I've ever owned. Except for the Matshita DVD drive, which has now used up its 5 allowed region swaps. I made sure the last one was to Region 2 (Canada/USA). But since I've been living in a Region 4 region now for years, my MacBook can't play any media coded for this region. There is also no firmware flash available for this drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868).
    There is no logical or commercial reason for region coding. It is particularly onerous for those of us with portable Macs who travel / live internationally....

  • Multi-region DVD player?

    I bought my white Macbook back in the States, as well as my collection of DVD's. However, I am currently studying abroad in the UK for well over a year, and am frustrated to no end that I cannot watch anything but region one on my computer, without switching over to region 2 (and thus, making myself unable to watch my own dvds) - other mac users in the halls have warned me that you can only switch back and forth between regions so many times before your computer is completely screwed up. Is there any way to fix your computer to be multi-region?

    By licensing requirements of the owners of the DVD technology, computer DVD players and computer DVD drives limit you to five region changes before the drive locks to the region of the last DVD you use. Once the drive locks, you cannot play disks from any other region with the Apple DVD Player, and the drive itself may be locked as well; all current SuperDrives that I know of do indeed lock in the firmware.
    I'm not aware of any hack that can remove the region lock in any current SuperDrive, so you'll have to look for an external DVD drive that lacks the region lock or can have it removed, and then use DVD playback software such as VLC Media Player that doesn't have a region lock included.

  • PowerDVD changed my DVD region! (Can I get back to Region Free?)

    Sorry to bother you, but I have a problem and I'm hoping you can assist me.  I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkPad T530.  The first time I put in a DVD (Region 1), PowerDVD told me it couldn't play because it was the wrong region.  It listed my drive region as "FREE" and that the DVD required Region 1.  It asked me the question, "Are you sure you want to change your region?"  I did NOT want to change the region from "FREE" to "1".  I read the question several times to make sure I didn't misunderstand the question and hit the wrong button.  I clicked NO.  However, it changed my DVD Region!  Now it's listed at Region 1 in Windows 8 Device Manager!  Why would it do this?  Please tell me this is just a software setting from PowerDVD, and that it hasn't changed my drive region in the Firmware.  If it's been changed in the drive firmware, how can I set it back to region free?  Thank you for your help.
    Solved!

    In some versions of software, "free" means that no region has been assigned yet and that you must identify a region on startup.

  • Regional DVD question

    If a DVD was brought outside North America the region code would be region 2, is it possible to make back up copies of region DVD's that were bought outside North America?

    Yes, Use Mactheripper.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22715
    Insert the disc and set at NO Region.
    Then you will need to use either Toast 7 or Popcorn, these will compress and burn the DVD to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc. It is very easy to do.
    The other choice is to use VLC Player that will play all regions without you using up your 5 changes.

  • Is the HP G6x laptop a regional dvd player?

    there is a dvd i want that requires a " multi-regional" dvd player. Does the HP G6x have a Multi regional dvd player??

    hotlife12 wrote: there is a dvd i want that requires a " multi-regional" dvd player. Does the HP G6x have a Multi regional dvd player??
    Hello hotlife12, All of the CD\DVD drives have the capability to bet set to a specific region.
    You can only change the settings a maximum of 5 times and then the 5 time locks the CD\DVD drive in the last region you select.
    This approach allows those that have these CD\DVD drives that may move form one location(country) to another, for example Europe to the United States, to change the location to the United States.

  • Can't get around this error after adding second dataset...A scope is required for all aggregates used outside of a data region unless the report contains exactly one dataset

    I added a dataset to an existing report and broke an aggregation.  In the old (i.e. single dataset) report, this expression below worked fine.  I wanted to get a distinct count of the vst_ext_id field when my educated field was like "VTE1*"
    = CountDistinct(IIF(Fields!educated.Value like "VTE1*", Fields!vst_ext_id.Value, Nothing))
    After adding a new dataset, this no longer works and I get the error " A scope is required for all aggregates used outside of a data region unless the report contains exactly one dataset".  Having done some research online, I found that I
    needed to specify my dataset explicitly and I thought this new expression might work, but still no success...
    = CountDistinct(IIF(Fields!educated.Value,"DataSet1" like "VTE12*", Fields!vst_ext_id.Value,"DataSet1", Nothing))
    Am I missing something?  Based on online responses, this explicit dataset naming convention seems to help most people, but it isn't working for me.
    Thanks in advance!
    Brian

    I found the answer.  Apparently, my expression syntax was off.  This expression does the trick...
    = CountDistinct(IIF(Fields!educated.Value like "VTE12*", Fields!vst_ext_id.Value,Nothing),"DataSet1")
    I just happened upon this particular syntax searching online.  I was trying to specify the dataset name after each .value, but I never got that to work.   This is the only time I have found this particular syntax online.

  • How do you add calculation columns to a table Region by using the Footer?

    I have a requirement to add some aggregate metrics at the bottom of my "tableRegion". The "TotalValue" property value for the table is not going to work for me since I the data I'm calculating is more complicated then doing a simple "sum".
    My first try (simple test case) was to use "OATableFooterBean". However, when it tries to find the table bean, it comes back as "null":
    if (empDetails != null) {
    OATableFooterBean tblFooter =(OATableFooterBean) empDetails.getFooter();
    if (tblFooter != null) {
    tblFooter.setAttributeValue("EmployeeName", "Merit Inc Target/Budget");
    I'm guessing it is due to not defining a "footer" region for my "table" region. When I click on the "Table" region, then due "New", I dot see "Region" listed as an option. So my question is how do I add a region "footer" to my "table" region? Once I have that, I'm sure it will solve the "null" exception I'm seeing for trying to get the table footer in the above code.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    For this create a transient attribute in the VO.
    Perform your required logic on this new transient attribute.
    Now create a footer region and create a styledtext and assign this transient attribute.

    Sridhar

  • Using dynamic info in html region?

    Is it possible to use the output of a query in the source area of an html region?
    I'd like to display some data in the source I have in the html region of a page, but I can't find any documentation on how to do that.

    Hi,
    You have to create a dynamic pl/sql region and use PL/SQL and the Oracle Web toolkit (i.e. htp/htf packages). Also you can reference session state using variables bind (:MY_ITEM) syntax.
    Example:
    declare
      my_date varchar2(20);
    begin
      select to_char(sysdate, 'dd-Mon-yyyy')
      into my_date
      from dual;
       htp.p('Actual date:'|| my_date);
    end;Hope that helps,
