5 Things MSPs Need to Know about the Windows 10 Upgrade Launch This Wednesday

This Wednesday, July 29th, Microsoft will officially launch their new Windows 10 operating system for both business and home users. If your non-enterprise end users have either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installed on their devices, they are eligible for a free upgrade up until July 29, 2016 - a full year after upgrading. As MSPs, however, youmay be hesitant to immediately roll out Windows 10, since it likely still has bugs to be corrected. Unfortunately, with its release date imminent, there's been widespread anxiety about clients receiving upgrade notifications and worse, installing Windows 10 without consulting their IT department, IT solutions provider, and/or MSP. If you've been uneasy about Microsoft's latest launch and want to know how to best prepare yourself for July 29th,keep reading! How have you been preparing for the release?...

  • Things You Need To Know about old= New iMac

    1) Your HP All-In-One printer/scanner/copier - will it work with this new Leopard iMac? Maybe. I struggled with the all-in-one Printer Scanner Copier PSC 2355 for hours, and that includes reading the discussion forums on Apple's website. Apple support will tell you to call HP. HP will tell you to call Apple, or to check back for updated drivers. This was unacceptable. I finally crossed my fingers and loaded HP drivers for "Tiger", the previous OS version. Hey, the PSC 2355 works perfectly. Hope you have success also.
    (2) PPT and PPS files in email. If you do not have Microsoft Office and PowerPoint, you need to know this: iMac comes with a trial version of Keynote and a trial version of PowerPoint software. If you receive a PowerPoint slide show from a friend, and you click on it to view it in Mail, Keynote may open up, for the first month or so. But if you don't buy keynote, this will eventually stop working. If MS PowerPoint opens up, same trouble - it may work a month or so. On my machine, the trial version actually locked up the iMac at the "Splash Screen". And if you don't buy Keynote, MS PowerPoint or MS Office for Mac, then your last hope for seeing PPT and PPS files is "Quicklook" which doesn't step through slides one at a time, but presents them as a long document. Not so great. Our solution was (A) delete the trail versions, and (B) buy a family pack of iWork and then everyone gets Keynote. Too bad the PPT and PPS music doesn't work.
    (3) Moving old iMac (circa 2001) files to new iMac. This worked very nicely and seamlessly - all the music, photos, passwords, bookmarks, email moved smoothly from old iMac to new iMac. Only thing is... I think some old crap also moved. Old stuff that will never work in Leopard such as OS 9 apps and games. Even found some old fonts moved. THUS, we received an error "Helvetica narrow substituted for Helvetica which is corrput". Apple support was useless, telling me to reinstall the entire system, which did not solve the problem. After reading Apple discussions, someone suggested copying the fonts from the system folder to the user's library folder. Problem goes away, all is well.
    (4) Thus, once you get these kinks worked out, you will LOVE this new iMac. built in camera, mic, fantastic screen and color rendition, fast processor, wonderful iLife apps, and the whole experience. Hope my comments help you transition into your new Mac Life.

I have my Mini Mac with Leopard 10.5.1 for about 3 weeks. My learning curve looks like a dead man's EKG, thus my simplistic question: OpenOffice or NeoOffice? I basically write and have old files rescued from my Windows 98 written in Word 2000. For my purposes, is one office program preferable to the other?
    Thanks.

  • Things you need to know about 6280

Hi everybody, I used to have a 6680 and I say this with regret. Why? I gave it to my girlfriend as a gift. Now that was a good sturdy functional phone. Now I bought a 6280 from Vodafone. I wanted a N70 but the Vodafone representative recommended this one. I chose to go with the 6280 because the N70 looked a little bit too fragile. She also said there are no significant differences. Well, she couldn’t be more wrong. Let me tell you why. The first thing I should mention is that 6280 is not a symbian phone! This, for who knows what it means, it is a lot. I wasn’t aware. You cannot switch between applications for one. So now since I bought it, I gave it a go, see what it is all about. Nice graphics, big screen, no problems (I read here somebody had some). The first annoying thing that hit me is the back light. Goes out in an instant. Or 10 seconds they say. Depends on how you measure time. The problem is you cannot adjust that. Neither the contrast. Nor the luminosity. Some people find these features useful. Nokia seems doesn’t. Some people said on this forum that the sliding front does not have a good grip. Mine seem to do. Navigating through folders is somewhat frustrating but this is subjective. Another thing you should know is that you cannot set the memory card as the default storage space and the phone memory is small. Just about 5MB free with … nothing on it. But I guess you can get around that and be happy with what you have. Now for the real problems. One big issue for me was synchronizing with Outlook. I got it working in the first try. No problems there. But when checking the contact list on the phone … well, disappointment. The 6280 does not record company name, job title and birthday. This is a huge problem for somebody well organized like me. Birthdates are saved in calendar but they do not show up in the contact details. Try finding a birthday through the entire calendar! Second thing that got me down is that the contact phones have no area codes. This you might say “well, it’s ok”. Not if you modify something and then you get your contact updated in Outlook with no area codes. Again BIG problem. My second frustration was with the email accounts. It was hell to figure out how to configure and then I realized. If you have multiple email accounts … you should get another phone. 6680 is good. I assume any symbian enabled phone will do. Not this one. You cannot have all the emails grouped or in separate folders at least as it is on s60 phones. No. here you have to go to “Menu – Settings – Configuration – Personal Config Settings – select other email account and activate it”. Then you go back and go into the email folder. Good job Nokia! I think they could have found a worst sequence to do it. Also, get this, I assume (99% I know) that the emails get stored in the phone memory. You have no way of moving to memory card and no way of reading office or pdf files. Note that on symbian there are applications to do it. As for the battery, I don’t know yet. It did not last one day anyway but I gave it a good run and I know it will improve after several recharges. The good things I know about this phone is that the video has a good quality. I cannot say for pictures because I do have a professional digital SLR camera and I cannot compare without being mean. It is still a phone. The radio is average. Good enough I say. Small note to end this. The phone should have predictive text input. Should, because it is not in the menu. A problem that a firmware update should resolve. I don’t know to what version since I might have the last one. It is: v 03.60 10-02-06. I would buy another model. If you are like me, pay attention to all I had to say. Cheers!

Good posts a lot of information I needed or to know, or more so wish I'd known prior to purchasing the 6280. Came across this post while trying to find resolutions to a number of the 'problems' with this model that you've listed, or for accuracy's sake functional and features missing from this phone or poorly develop, in comparison to other models.
Fact: One 'bug' that hasn't been raised in these posts is the management of a contact thumbnail's through PC Suite does work. Adding a thumbanil on the PC doesn't appear on the phone, and adding a thumbnail on the phone doesn't appear on the PC.
Oppinion: The lack of management/handling of Company name & Birthday were the killer for me!
Fact: Also I've only had the phone about 2 days now and I've had it just stop and mysteriously restart on me about 4 times. Admittly I've been using it a lot but not doing anything out of the ordinary to expect that.
Oppinion: On the plus side the screens resolution great, and the photos very good for a phone. Neat little cropping tool, but nothing to rotate. Although the camera doesn't have a protector the case can be replace fixing and scratches! The phone is generally pretty responsive, boots and shuts down very quickly too.
Oppinion: I'm probably being over critical here but the video call's camera at half arms length barely shows your whole face, at full arms length it's 'closer' to what you'd see on a passport. Although at this distance viewing the person your calling is more difficult. The phone has a good digital zoom in-out feature during a video call. But given the small portion of you shown under normal circumstances I don't imagine this would get used often. Admittly it was entertaining to keep the phone where it was and zoom in on my eye, but it's entertainment value will wear off (or maybe i could call me iridologist).

  • Anybody know about the Window Presentation and Google Update Plugins?

Do you have the Google Update and Windows Presentation plugins? I didn't add them, but they are there and weren't removed as incompatible when I updated from FF 7 to 7.01. So, I haven't disabled them. The Windows Presentation plugin hasn't been updated since 2008 and has no updates! Neither does the Google Update plugin.

She is 68 years old and has vision problems. My thought is that it would be eaiser for her to see than a ipod touch. She would use it for music, maybe reading, some games. I'm not sure she would be adept enough to download many apps, so we'd prbably load it up for her.
    Thanks for any input!

She's going to need to update and at some point restore the iPad which requires a computer.
For vision problems she can enable zoom. Tap Settings / General / Accessibility.

  • Does Verizon really care about the windows phones??

I recently bought the Nokia 928 and as a "tech-impaired" person I am really happy with it. This is my second smart phone and I find it much easier to navigate than my Motorola Droid 3.   My co-worker (who is similarly impaired!) wanted to update to her first smart phone and had visited her local Verizon store to browse the various phones.  All that was EVER mentioned to her or shown were various Razrs, the Samsung Galaxies, and of course I-phones.  She saw the 928 demo phone there but it was never even offered as a choice so she didn't ask about it.  When she saw my phone she asked my thoughts, and asked to "play" with it.  I showed her some of the things she could do that I have found to be not difficult.  Bottom line she decided she liked the ease of operation, knew she did NOT need Suri and thought the Samsung Galaxy S 4 had way too many features for what she would ever need. She went back to the store and they did not even have a 928 in stock.  They did order her one, but she said that I knew way more about what the phone could do than anyone there.  I told her to ask about the 25 dollar gift certificate available through the end of June that could be used for Microsoft apps, they knew NOTHING about that either.  When I bought my phone I asked the store rep who was helping me (in a different town) and she was also unaware of it; but at least she found out and helped me set up a Microsoft account and got the certificate onto my phone.  She laughed and admitted she really knew very little about the Windows phone set up.  It really does seem that Verizon just doesn't care much about this platform and does not give their customers this choice since they virtually ignore that it even exists.

Thats why I normally do not get involved with writing on message boards, especially corporate boards, too many company employees write comments like that on behalf of their office…and yes, cellular service and home communications services are a little more that a “soda” and yes, I do expect loyalty to be a two way street….end of thread, unsubscribed from this farce….

  • TS3579 I found this useful because I did not know about the effect of typing in data and that you could only drag to rearrange the data.  I had typed in data before and this had caused problems but restoring defaults did not cause correct dates to show up

I found this  (TS3579: If the wrong date or time is displayed in some apps on your Mac Learn about If the wrong date or time is displayed in some apps on your Mac) useful because I did not know about the effect of typing in data and that you could only drag to rearrange the data.  I had typed in data before and this had caused problems but restoring defaults did not cause correct dates to show up in Finder.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

Q: I already have a Revel account. What do I need to do? What do I need to know about this?
A: If your Revel account uses the same Adobe ID as your Photoshop.com account, your JPEGs will be moved there. Otherwise, a new Revel account will be set up for you using the same Adobe ID you use with your Photoshop.com account.
Revel accounts can be merged manually. Use the Adobe Media Downloader to download all of the JPEG photos from your Photoshop.com library and then upload those photos to your existing Revel account.
Click here to archive your Photoshop.com library so you do not lose any files.

  • I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DRIVING TABLE...PLEASE

Well, My name is Adan. I am from Panama.. my english is not
good. But I'll try. I need to know about driving tables and how
have to choose a driving table and how optimizer proccess an sql
    statment.
    Example:
    Employees have (1,000,000 rows),
    dept have (100 rows)
    Category have (100 rows)...
I need retrieved all employees with category and dept name for
those employee with salary > 100000
Well, What is the driving table and where i have to put this one
in the from clause ? What about order in the where predicate...
    First ?
    Select E.name, C.category, D.Departement
    from Employees e, dept d, category c
    where
    and d.cat = c.cat
    and e.deptno = d.deptno
    and e.salary > 100000
    Last ?
    Select E.name,C.category, D.Departement
    from dept d, category c ,Employees e
    where
    and d.cat = c.cat
    and e.deptno = d.deptno
    and e.salary > 100000
I apreciate your help....Thanks and sorry for my english....
    Bye..

    Adam,
If you set your optimizer = choose and analyze the tables and
indexes to generate statistics, then your system can use the
Cost Based Optimizer (CBO) and, like David said, it will
automatically choose the best access path, and the order of
    things will not matter.
If your optimizer is not set to choose or if there are no
statistics, then it will use the Rule Based Optimizer (RBO), in
which case, the only thing that matters is the order of the
tables in the from clause. When using RBO, the driving table
should be at the end of the from clause, in the right-most
position. The driving table is the one such that, after the
restrictions have been applied, returns the smallest number of
rows. You would have to compare the number of rows in the
employees table where salary > 100000 to the number of rows in
the dept table (100) and the number of rows in the category
    table (100).
In RBO, if there are more than 100 rows in the employees table
where salary > 100000, then your from clause would be:
    FROM employees e, dept d, category c
In RBO, if there are less than 100 rows in the employees table
where salary > 100000, then your from clause would be:
    FROM category c, dept d, employees e
This is all that applies to the example you have given, however
there are other things that can apply in other situations. For
example, if there is an outer join to a table, the table that
has the (+) cannot be used as the driving table.

  • I just ordered a macbook air today and need to know if the 128gb SSD is enough space. I presently have a macbook pro and am using only 30gb hard drive space so, the apple rep said 128 is enough as I do not load much pictures or gaming etc. Also is i5 ok.

I just ordered a macbook air today and need to know if the 128gb SSD is enough space. I presently have a macbook pro and am using only 30gb hard drive space so, the apple rep said 128 is enough as I do not load much pictures or gaming etc. Also is i5 ok.

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.
Perfect 2TB HD, very slim, the "little giant"   made by Toshiba (have several of these) $119
