  • Adobe Creative Suite 3 users - how are things going with Leapord?

I am a graphic designer as a profession. I am strongly considering picking up a copy of Leapord but I want to make sure things are smooth and functional with the Creative Suite before I dive in. Any horror stories or perks?

Upgrade on my Macbook went fine with no problems for Photoshop.
However if you do what I did for the desktop there is much more hassle. I replaced my G5 with a new iMac so not only did I have to get all the files and applications over but then upgrade to Leopard as well. After a Super Duper backup of my old G5, I deactivated Photoshop. After deactivation, you should use the Photoshop install disk to completely remove CS3 from the old computer before starting Migration Assistant. I did not do that but moved the CS3 folder to the trash figuring migration assistant would not move it. Evidently there are files that are installed by Adobe but are not removed unless you run the uninstaller. Migration went very well for my files and other applications. There was no sign that anything CS3 was moved.
After I verified that things were working correctly on my new iMac, I ran the Leopard upgrade. That also went well with no problems. Then I tried to install Photoshop on the new machine and it would not install. I had to run the uninstall option first. Evidently there are many shared components that had to be removed. After successful uninstall, reinsert the install disk, Photoshop installed normally. I then reactivated and all is well.

I should just change the OS and leave all your apps and data alone.  That said, if any of your apps are old and use Rosetta (ppc apps), they won't run under Mountain Lion.
Make sure you take a good Time Machine or Clone backup before you convert.
You can check compatibility of your apps here:

The program is for replacement since Apple does not repair iDevices...you take your non-working or damaged iPhone to an Apple store genius bar, or send to Apple service, and they provide a refurbished unit as a replacement, for a fee, of course.  You will have to talk with Apple to see if you get all components or just the iPhone replaced.
With AppleCare+ you can have two out-of-warranty replacements for a cost of $49 each.

  • The Nokia E51: The things that work, and the thing...

Wonderful phone. Let me list my accomplishments and outstanding challenges.
    Challenges
    * Finding a video player that will play common formats like xVid in LANDSCAPE format. I did find a free app that will download and play anything on Youtube, but again not landscape.
    * Need to find a video recorder that records with a better frame rate. Is there one?
    * SIP voip calls remain a challenge.. Not sure if the issue is NAT traversal or that I just have the settings wrong or that the issue is the voip/sip provider.. Have been able to get Gizmovoip to work, BUT call quality to land lines is less than I get on Skype-Out (using Fring). With VoipBuster it seems to connect to the service, but when making a call it just sits there without response or connecting or anything else happening. So would still like to do smooth, cheap and reliable SIP.. Any thoughts on providers? Needs to be cheap (or free) to USA, Holland and Thaland.
    * Built in Web browser sometimes crashes (vanishes). Sometimes even just after opening it up and looking at the bookmark list, or shortly after opening a basic page like Google or BBC News PDA.
    * How to change the user-agent of this web browser.. Some sites are determined to present me their 'light' version. People: "Light" is not good when it comes to WiFi phones, or beer. So need to change the user-agent that the browser presents. Opera Mini goes some way to reduce the problem; excellent little browser that, and the best to use when your connection isn't WiFi (and/or not free/unlimited or slow)
    * How to select and copy (to paste elsewhere) text from a web page? Would like for example to be able to use the edit key (#) and drag & select the mouse pointer.
    * Nimbuzz is a free program that allows you to chat to MSN, Yahoo Chat (etc, etc) AND Skype chat. It's weird on this phone though, sometimes it just does't start when I try to open it. Can use Fring of course, but the chat function in Nimbuzz is better. Also think Nimbuzz leaks less GPRS bytes in overhead, which is nice when paying by the kilo/megabyte.
    * Need to find a Calendar & Todo GTD type program that kicks **bleep**, rather than sucks it.
    * Some good games would be nice. Suggestions? Would love a good pinball or other simple yet addictive arcade stuff. I loved the old Nokia 9 Ball Pool as well
    * Standby screen sometimes flashes/flickers. It seems it's updating something, but the effect is annoying. It's not a hardware glitch, the background wallpaper remains visible. it's just the Standby items that briefly blink.
    * My phone has English and Thai as languages. I *NEED* Dutch T9. Why is finding & adding a couple more languages as hard as the Quest for the Holy Grail? Come ON..
    * You can really feel the phone heating up when it's working hard, just as with a Skype-Out call.. I'm not suffering burns or anything, but is that normal?
    * On S60 v2 you could go into 'Applications' and set that certain applications were allowed to access the internet. Options included 'always allow', 'ask every time' and 'ask first time'. Where did that go? Some apps have a habit of asking to connect a couple times. I want to just allow them access. (Or ideally, access only when connected to a particular access point or access point group.)
    Accomplishments (SOLVED)
    - Getting rid of T9 words that I added but that these days become the first suggested word.. Found a way to revert back to the common word 'is' after adding 'HR' (as in human resources) to the dictionary which in hindsight is a boneheaded thing to do.. (T9 didn't used to work that way on my last Symbian phone)
    - External Bluetooth keyboard 'justworks' out of the box, great.
    - Wifi search, signal reception and configuration is amazing.
    - Must-Haves: File system access with the free Y-Browser, Fring chat/Skype calls, Gmail client (lighter than the built in one), emTube (for Youtube vids).
    - Also Google maps is pretty amazing, it even tracked my position using GSM triangulation when I was *WAY* upcountry in Northern Thailand.. Sometimes though it says 'position not availabs le', is that a phone thing or a network operator thing that they didn't list the GPS position of their signal towers?
That's it so far.. has it been a week already..?! I just don't know how I ever lived without one.

    > People complaining about video player and picture taking
    > capabilities should have bought an NSeries.
To a degree I agree when it comes to hardware; like E51 includes a 2 MP camera which honestly is fine for business functions like taking the occasional pic of a whiteboard drawing or the like.
However business people also want to show people pictures of their kids or something, and on a phone that's got plenty of hardware punch it seems just petty to ship it with a handicapped picture browser.
Same applies to music.. On those long flights you do actually want to listen to music..
I think this whole N vs E vs number series is just a case of over-marketing your stuff. I buy E51 because it had all the features I valued at a great price; nothing else enters into it. The next choice would actually have been 6110 Navigator, a number series phone. Or if an N series then probably an N80i, again similarly priced.
    > Eseries is or is marketed as a business phone. It should
    > perform well when it comes to business yet the most common
    > task of syncing outlook email is out of the question.
The irony is that the best e-mail implementation is actually GMail.. Get e-mails in a very lightweight browser AND be able to quickly search and retrieve ANY e-mail sent in the last 3 years or so. Really that's all that's needed. (well, along with better support for attachments, but the server-based model works very well I think.
    > PCSuite is obsolete. Even in its 6.85 version as it only

    > Windows Mail is something people from Nokia are not yet
    > aware.
Yeah I never quite understood that application. There seems so much redundancy there.. I mean you just want to copy files to and from the phone, so if the thing works like a USB drive then that really is just fine to move either pictures or music or anything else. I tried the i-tunes wannabe app once and honestly I don't see the poing of converting my mp3's to whatever it's converting to. The original mp3 sounds just fine and I have plenty of space on the memory card.
And then as a separate there should be sync to Outlook and that's pretty much it.
Backup....: again that's either just copying files, OR syncing. My sync to outlook IS my backup.
Modem/connections: I'd rather just see that as a modem driver for Windows and be done with it.
    > I own an E51 and sometimes it fails to see my music on my 8Gb
    > card.
Yeah, it's not smart enough to notice by itself that a metric **bleep**ton of new tunes showed up so you have to manually go 'update'. Oh well.
    > Switching programs sometimes leaves me with a white screen
    > for a couple of minutes.
I don't get that.. UNless perhaps the app crashed in a serious way, usually something pretty beta like Fring.
    > Yet I don't complain cause is a new product and a new
    > firmware will probably address those issues.
    > But not being able to take my Outlook inbox with me
    > it's disappointing, frustrating and unacceptable.
I'd be inclined to auto-forward all my work email to Gmail and be done with it. Then you have years of email always with you.
    > Come on Nokia you can do better than this.
Are you kidding, they're all working on making their stuff look and feel like iPhone, just like every other phone company out there. Waste time in syncing email and multiple to-do levels? Sorry, not very hip, even for a business phone.
And to be sure, look at all the business people buying iPhones as if they were buying donuts.. iPhone COMPLETELY lacks major and sometimes very basic phone / business features but they don
t CARE as it browses the net, shows pictures, plays music. Again, Nokia tries to over-market and over-segment.. Get a cool 'everything' phone out there and everyone will buy it, business people included. Heck, 'business functions' just means 'business software'. For sure there's no such thing as business hardware..

  • A few things that might help before updating to 4.0 (if you haven't yet):

I'm in the IT dept of the company I work for and it's my job to troubleshoot, test, implement etc etc everything and anything regarding iphones and other related software. So, after MUCH trial and error, here are some of the key points I have found regarding the upgrade that I hope will also help other people as they have myself and others whom I work with. So here are some snippets of the mass email I sent out to our other associates who have yet to upgrade their OSs:
In order to make sure that you're upgrade goes as smooth as possible: please take into consideration the following recommendations:
    1. It is not necessary to do the software upgrade on the same machine that you normally use to sync your phone.
I sync my phone at home on a PC, but upgraded the software at work on a Mac. I lost no data/music/photos/contacts/applications and it was fast and easy. I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend you do your firmware upgrading on a Mac. I also did it at home on the pc and it was a nightmare. I had to uninstall and reinstall every scrap of Apple software I ever had on there and all kinds of other permissions/backup problems ensued.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT upgrade your iphone's OS on a PC.
If you do not have a Mac, chances are you know somebody who does who will let your borrow their iTunes for an hour.
    2. Obviously, you will need the most recent version of iTunes (9.2) and OSX10.5 or later on your computer (OPTIMALLY, you will have 10.6.4). Again, do this on a Mac. If it is not, please download and install 10.6.4/9.2 (DO NOT have your phone plugged into the machine while you do this). Wait for everything to upgrade, then restart your computer.
    3. Always, always, always make sure you have a reliable backup of your phone's contents SOMEWHERE (it doesn't necessarily need to be on the computer you use to sync it, and to be honest I would recommend NOT using that same machine for the firmware upgrade). In the off-chance that your upgrade fails, you will lose all of your data if you do not have a backup.
    4. Once all of your machine's software has been updated, go ahead and open iTunes THEN plug your phone into your machine. Once it finds your phone, it will likely automatically prompt you to upgrade your phone's firmware and carrier settings. Accept this.
If it does not, please choose the "check for update" button on the summary screen of your selected iphone in itunes.
Downloading and installing should take roughly 20-45 minutes (depending on your speed/connection). Itunes will create a backup of your current data/settings before installing this which shouldn't take more than 15 minutes and will overwrite your previous one.
You should not encounter a need to sync ANYTHING at this point, so please please please do not sync before updating. Keep it plugged in and do not answer any incoming calls, texts or emails while this is occurring. In fact do NOT use your phone at all, in any way while the update is being downloaded or applied.
    5. If all goes well, your phone will restart itself after the installation. This will take a few minutes. It will disappear from your itunes during this time, but fret not, it will return. When it does, and you are told by itunes that the upgrade is complete, it is now safe to disconnect your phone and try out all the new features. (A reboot is HIGHLY recommended)
All of the listed features of the new iOS4 will be fully operational on all 3GS phones. 3G phones will not be able to multitask, among a few other things but nothing about its basic functionality will be removed. This update is not available for 2g phones at all. Once updated, it cannot be retrofitted with the old firmware without hacking and if you hack your phone, I will not support it and neither will Apple. Also, the FaceTime video chatting function is only supported on the iPhone 4.
For a comprehensive list of all of the cool new things you can now do with your upgraded phone, I recommend you READ the following links:

Hi - my IT department directed me to this page as we have been experiencing a few sync issues etc. So I downloaded the patch - my email account will not sync properly now. Is there any way I can uninstall this patch?
iOS 4: Exchange Mail, Contacts, or Calendars may not sync after update
    Last Modified: 28 June, 2010
    Article: TS3398
    Symptoms
Immediately after updating to iOS 4, some users may notice that Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowly. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly.
    Products Affected
iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS
    Resolution
To work around this issue, users should install a configuration profile from Apple that increases the amount of time the iOS 4 device will wait for the Exchange Server to respond to its sync requests. For best results, the profile should be installed on as many iOS 4 devices at your company as possible.
    To install the profile:
Use Safari on your iOS 4 device to download the configuration profile. It may be easiest to read this article with your iPhone or iPod touch and tap the download link there, but you may also email the attachment to another email account on your iOS 4 device, and tap the attachment to open it.
Tap Install to install the profile, and enter your passcode if prompted.
A warning message will appear because the profile is not signed. Tap Install Now.
Tap Done to complete the installation, then power off your device and power it back on.
Wait for your Exchange data to finish syncing.
After installation, the profile will be listed under Settings > General > Profile.

  • Hello there,  there is a rare window that keeps popping up every time i start Logic.  I'd like to send a screenshot... anyway, it's a "tempo" window with strange layout about midi effects and so,.... is it normal?  How can i improve this?  Thanks.

hello there,  there is a rare window that keeps popping up every time i start Logic.  It's a "tempo" window with strange layout about midi effects and so,.... is it normal?  How can i improve this?  Thanks.

Hmm, that's some sort of MIDI Arpeggiator setup in your environment. Strange that you don't know it, this has to be custom-installed, it is not part of the standard setup.
You can do two things about it:
1.unlock your current screenset (shift-L), then close the (Bass Driver) window, then relock the screenset (shift-L). Next time you open up this project you won't see the Bass Driver, but it is still in the project.
    2. You can remove the whole page: open the Environment (cmd-8), then go to the dropdown menu arrow top left of the Environment window and select the Bass Driver layer. If it is selected, dropdown again and choose Delete. Now Save your project under a different name (Save As...), so that you still keep the Bass Driver setup in the original project. If you don't need to keep it, you can simply Save.

  • Little things that make Linux more secure

So after reading a post about rm -rf /home mishap I've decided to make my Arch a bit more safer and share it with you.
So if you have some useful things that make your Arch safer as it is share it here.
So first thing I've did I've decided to add this to my bashrc as alias:
alias rm='echo "last chance before screwing things up 10s..." && sleep 10s && rm'
10 seconds is maybe a bit too much, but it gives you enough time to prevent things from screwing up (at least if you're doing it as normal user...)
The other thing I've done was to prevent Forkbombs to take down the system. I've found this when I tried to reduce swappiness of my Arch.
Sorry can't find the link anymore but what I did was this:
    ulimit -u 30
It limits the number of processes on 30, so forkbomb has no effect; but the site said that this could prevent you from compiling things and similar stuff.
So I'm not sure how good is for you.
Do you have any good advice what to do to make it safer.
Something maybe in likes of SELinux or iptables (I have no idea how to set them )
    please share.

    karol wrote:
Well, it's your system, but let me tell you that 30 processes is "a bit" too low. Did you test this setup w/ a running X?
There are many definitions of "safe":
    - hacker/cracker-proof,
    - PEBKAC/fool-proof,
    - backups etc. in case your hardware dies.
    - etc.
I'm the only user on my computer and I trust myself not to do really dumb things.
Actually I did. I have KDEmod an "whatnot" running. I was surprised myself still don't really know how it's actually possible.
I've tried the forkbomb it won't work, but I can start new apps, have X and KDE with all it's bells and wisthels runnign and still don't get any errosr which I would expect.
    @Xyne:
Well I personally think that hitting y for every subfolder of certain folder I wish to remove is waste of time. But agreed 10s is too much. I'll reduce it to 3-4.
I know I am cautious to some extent. But I decided to start this thread so thredas like my borther / sister / I ve rm -rf-ed my / /home or something else.
I do kind of trust myslef even if I only skim through AUR PKGBUILD files and haven't touch iptables (yet).
I've also don't have SSH on my install as I don't need it.
But to be truthful I do have the weakest password for my root, so that's probably bad (have to think of another password).
I know that most archers know how to take care for their computer, but I was still curious what you do. And if what I did made my computer safer.
What do I have to add to my PS1 so that my root will be red?

  • IOS6 is the worst thing that can happen to an Iphone4S

My iphone 4s was working perfectly fine until I updated to IOS6
    - the phone heats up even when im not using it (to an extent that I cant leave it in my pocket)
    -every application available crashes
    -wifi disconnects every 5 seconds
-as soon as i recive a phone call it just locks on its own, i have to put in my security lock code to end a conversation
My question is,Is this a strategy Apple is using to force people to buy the Iphone 5? IOS6 is the worst thing that could ever happen to an iphone.
APPLE please fix this, my phone is just useless. Cant send an email or a message without the phone crashing!

Back up your iPhone and restore from backup. If that's does not help, restore your iPhone as new (not from backup).

  • Things that should be in the next update... please don't wait for 2.0

I've been using adobe products a long time and I have to say that I am a little disappointed there has not been more thought put into things that should just work in a v1 product.
    Here is the list:
Ingest window should be able to be able to take up the full screen.  At a minimum, it should remember the last size. My paths get somewhat long and this is very frustrating to continually have to resize the window or panes every time I ingest.
Ingest should put the files in the bin selected when I hit ingest.  It always puts them at the root.  To make matters worse, keyboard shortcuts that are used to select files in almost any program like SHIFT+HOME do not work.  I have to click, scroll to the bottom and shift click the last file to select a range.  Then drag all the clips to the target bin.  Borrow the code from Premiere
Keyboard shortcuts for clip navigation.  Logging clips with keyboard shortcuts is a godsend and this is one thing that I love about Prelude.  Anyone who has to do a lot of logging will tell you these keyboard shortcuts are imperative to a smooth workflow.  This is especially true if you have to log hundreds of clips like I do.  Next clip, previous clip when editing from the navigation tree or in a roughcut would be extremely helpful.  If I am in a roughcut, I can easily get into a clip, but not back out to the roughcut where I was.  The only way I have found is to click on the roughcut name in the timeline window.
Re-linking moved media - FAIL.  Since this product is supposed to let different people log media, it seems crazy that the program can not re-link it.  Very few people in this world store there files in the same absolute path.
Lack of updates.  Makes me wonder if Adobe is committed to this product.  Having a really long time between iterations is hard on your users.  At this point I have no clue if any of these features will ever be added.
I have spent a lot of time in this program and it is on the verge of being great.  I personally think that before you start adding new features, you should fix some of the things that make it hard to use.

Thank you for your post and your passion for Prelude. Input from customers like you is how we can improve out product.
I do have a few comments and questions for you about your experience. Also, many of the items you have listed are already part of Prelude.
    Replies to your list:
    1.  The Ingest Dialog can be sized to fill your entire screen. Simply drag-drop the edges to resize. This size is also remembered on subsequent launches. This has been in the product for quite some time – what version of Prelude are you running? Currently we have made the following releases: Prelude 1.0, 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03. Our v2.0 has been announced and revealed at NAB last week and is coming out soon with many more enhancements and improvements. Rest assured that Adobe is committed to this product – as you will see with this new release.
    2.  Ingesting into the selected BIN is part of our upcoming release that was revealed at NAB. I'm currently on a Mac so cannot test the SHIFT+HOME shortcut, but Prelude does support CTRL/SHIFT selection options to make selection easier. I'll look into the HOME and END options as well. If they are missing we certainly want them added.
    3.  Glad you find the keyboard driven workflow beneficial. We had a lot of customer feedback early in our 1.0 days that this was a must. Adding support for clip selection in the Project Panel to open and log clips is something in our backlog we would also like to deliver because as you say it is very useful and saves time. We are also reviewing our Clip/Roughcut UI and workflow. Don't have anything to report yet other than this is an area we are focusing on.
    4.  Relinking is possible in Prelude 1.03. We've added additional relinking support in our 2.0 that provides relinking in rough cuts as well. If you are not yet on 1.03 please use the free update and let us know how it works for you.
    5.  As mentioned above, we have 3 updates posted last year for our 1.0. And 2.0 is coming out soon.
Please continue to share with us your thoughts and ideas for improving Prelude. We have an aggressive feature TODO list but are always looking for more direct input to help us properly prioritize what's part of our next delivery.
    Thanks!
    Michael
