5 year old HP Photosmart C4280 Printer is making a machine gun noise when printing

Connected to a Windows 7 DELL PC - suddenly making this dreadful noice - would replace it but I have a cupboard full of cartridges

Hi there keithhumph,
Hmm, this could be as simple as a dirty encoder strip. Open panel door and inpect the interior of the printers components. Look for a clear strip that runs horizontally. This is the encoder strip and tells the print carriage where it is in relation to the casing. If there is dirt/ink/debris/etc. use a soft cloth to CAREFULLY clean the strip. Remember without this strip the printhead will bang around inside the printer USE CAUTION. Let us know if it helps.
Best of Luck!

Try Reset Printing System, a menu choice in Printer Setup Utility, found above quit Printer Setup. Then restart the Mac, then re-Add the printer.

  • Machine gun noise coming from wireless HP 110 a printer when I start printing.

My HP  110 Photosmart wireless printer started makin a horrific noise.  It sounds like a machine gun firing before it starts printing.  Help!

Hi there CheryD, welcome to the forums!
I saw your post about the noise you are hearing from your printer and would like to help out the best I can! Sometimes a noise is associated with the rollers being dirty in the printer. I would suggest cleaning them to see if that helps.
Click this guide and scroll down to "Clean the paper rollers" for the instructions: Paper Jam - Clean the paper rollers
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions: click here.

  • HP D1600 making machine gun noise and poor print quality

    Hello.
Whenever I turn on the printer it makes a horrendously loud clicking noise like a machine gun being fired. It sounds fine during printing but the print quality is very low and it looks smeared. after printing the clicking resumes.
I've checked to see if there's anything causing a jam but can't see anything. I've also cleaned the paper feed and the cartridges and aligned the cartridges but it's still the same.
    Please help

Same engine as the CM2320 which means it has two motors on the right side and if one of them goes bad it will give the color bars across the paper.  To test just remove the right side cover and swap the motors since they are the same and see if the problem changes.

  • Cabling MacBook Pro to HP Photosmart C4280 Printer

This probably sounds ridiculous, and it's my first post, but I can't find any way to make the Belkin USB Extension Cable fit into the USB port on the back of my HP printer. Since only one end of the USB cable fits into the USB port on my MacBook Pro, it needs to be the opposite end that goes to my printer. But the receptacle on the printer is square shaped and narrow, and both ends of the USB cable are flat and rectangular and too wide to fit into the printer port. Both the printer and the cable were sold to me by Apple, and the sign on the HP Printer display at the Apple store says that it takes a Belkin 6 or 10 foot cable. Has anybody else encountered this issue? Thank you for any light you can shed on this.

How are you connecting the printer to the MacBook?
What version of OSX are you using?

  • Photosmart c4280 prints gibberish from new Macbook Air using OS X10.9

I can't seem to get this to print.  It will print page after page of a single line of gibberish for a simple print request.  The machine is a new macbook air with 10.9.4  Wife's IMac w/10.6  prints wirelessly with no problem.  As does my son's windows 7 powered PC.  So I'm not sure where to turn.  I've already done a reload of the driver with the same results.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, plugging the printer directly to the computer worked!  Not ideal, but it is workable.  Not sure why that is the case because the computer has no problems connecting to the internet via the router.  I guess it's all over my head!

  • Photosmart C4280 - "print cartridge missing or not detected"

keep getting that message, have turned off/onprinter, changed cartridges ??  still not responding -- can't print.  thanks

    Hi @Neil0401 ,
I understand that you are getting the error message that the " Print Cartridge Missing or Not Detected".
I would like to help you out with this issue today.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
I have provided a document with some steps to try to see if that will resolve the issue. Some of the steps you have already tried.
An 'Incompatible Cartridge' or 'Print cartridge is missing, incorrectly installed, or not intended f...

  • Tiny printing with Snow Leopard and HP Photosmart C4280

Since I have gotten Snow Leopard on my MacBook, my HP Photosmart C4280 printer only prints reduced size. The HP test page prints fine. I have uninstalled the HP driver and installed the Apple software driver. Nothing helps. Ideas?

Hi Philip & welcome to the forums:
Got to ask if you're sure you have the absolute latest HP drivers from Apple....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
And - also if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure your 3rd party apps are Snow Leopard compatible

  • Time Capsule and all in one printer HP Photosmart C4280

    Hello,
I recently got me a Macbook pro finally. Its awesome!! I love it. Im looking to get Time Capsule or something like that. I want to be able to hook my printer up to something and print from other room. I want to print wirelessly...the scanning and copying feature really doesnt bother me not to have.
Any know if the Time Capsule works with the HP Photosmart C4280. I got this printer with my computer. Its a multi function printer.
The backup feature is neat, but its not as important to me...Im sure it will be if I never lose my hard drive.
Anyone have any advice? Anyone have the HP Photosmart C4280 printer running on time capsule or any other wireless device in order to print wirelessly? Thanks
    Amy

    Hi Amy,
It should work just fine as a printer. I have a similar setup, and printing works, but I can't scan or fax across the network.
I'd probably recommend the Time Capsule over an Airport Extreme- your MBP can use it for Time Machine backups- untethered!
I've got one on order for our Mac notebooks.
Oh yeah: we have an HP Printer, too. Works fine.
If you price out 500GB and 1TB drives and wireless N routers, I think you'll see that Time Capsule is a pretty good deal.
    Enjoy your new Mac!

  • Compatibility of using Photosmart 7510 printer with a Photosmart 7525 printer from the same computer

Before installing, registering, and setting up my new HP Photosmart 7525 I need to know whether I can keep using my 2 year old HP Photosmart 7510 and its software on my computer and whether this would cause a conflict.  My 2 year old Photosmart 7510 works fine and I want to  use the Photosmart 7510 and the Photosmart 7525 both from the same computer and network without conflict.  And if a conflict would be probable, is it necessary to remove the Photosmart 7510 software before installing the software/drivers for the Photosmart 7525?

    Hi,
You can install more than 1 printer to your computer. They will share few folders including HP Photo Creations product but they should live harmony together.
    Regards.

  • HP Photosmart D6160 printer with Windows 7 os

I have an 18 month old HP Photosmart D6160 printer that has performed excellently on my PC running Windows 2000 Professional. The printer using the installed CD software was able to provide test prints, maintenance information and most importantly show which of the six ink cartridges was empty when the printer cartridge indicator light showed a problem. I have recently bought a Packard Bell TJ65 laptop using the Windows 7 os but HP do not provide any updated drivers for this os. The Windows 7 os recognises the printer and has a basic driver which does allow me to print but in order to ascertain which of the six cartridges has a problem (low ink level or empty) I have to remove and replace each cartridge in turn in order to find out which one needs to be replaced. None of the other printer maintenance is available either. I would appreciate any advice on whether there is a workaround for this problem. Thank you in anticipation! Ken

I have exactly the same problem, I have tried on HP's website, they seem to have some software for windows 7 now, but have tried to download the patch but as the original software would not install with windows 7 OS the patch wont work, it would not be so bad if the printer was really ancient, but it is not, the company do not seem to be very supportive, I have loads of ink for it but can never tell which cartridge has run out until it stops printing that colour.  What a shame there does not seem to be an answer.

  • HP PhotoSmart C4280 fix...

At least this worked for me.
Background: After I did an OS X 10.5.0 archive install on my Aluminum iMac 24", the PhotoSmart C4280 printer options would not allow me to change print quality, etc. Also, in Repair Permissions I would literally get hundreds of "Group differs..." relating to the C4280. I would have to uninstall the HP printer software, reboot, and reinstall it in order for full printer functions to work. And avoid Repair Permissions, which, if done, would require uninstall/reinstall again.
Neither the 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 update made a difference with these problems.
Nor did the HP driver 9.7.1 update. In fact, that driver did not list a C4200 series printer driver and did not install fully.
So, I fell back to "HPInstaller_PSC4200v9.7b.dmg" (which I don't see listed on HP's sight now), and the print quality, etc. was available again. However, I wrote to HP and told them I would be migrating to a printer brand that could figure out Leopard drivers.
Within two days, I had an answer: Install "HPv9.7InkjetOSX10.5Update.dmg", a patch available here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-56883-1 &lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3192753&os=219&lang=en
    (follow the installation instructions)
So, I installed the patch. Then, I repaired permissions and got a bunch of "Group differs..." again. However, after another permissions repair, there were no more items relating to the C4280. None!
And all the options for the printer were still available to me.

  • New hp photosmart c4280 update

I just checked the hp support page for the hp Photosmart C4280 Printer/Scanner which many of us have because of the deal Apple was running. Anyway, there is a new update that came out a couple of days ago. It looks like it is in preparation for 10.5.2. Here is the link
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=219&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&produc t=3192753
It is version 9.7.1. The last update for this printer was in November and was 9.7.

Thank you for your help. This was great and helped me fix the problem. The HP chat support apologized but they didn't really know how to help with a Mac. Uggh!
