"501 Bad address syntax" Squirrel Mail message

I am getting "501 Bad address syntax" when attempting to use a now once again freshly installed version of Mac OS X 10.4 server on an xServe.
I have installed the server completely from scratch to attempt to solve this problem about a week ago, and it was fine, until today. Now... when a user attempts to send a mail through www mail, they get the "501 Bad address syntax" Squirrel Mail message.
I have installed mailbfr, and use it religiously, but it does not seem to be able to fix this problem.
Is this something that I need to make changes to the httpd configs (or Apple GUI) or something I need to do to mail configs?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Chris

• HT204150 "bad address syntax"..??

I have one contact that for some reason, no matter how often I edit the contact info to reflect a proper email, once I try and use the address, the email bounces back with the following:
Your message cannot be delivered to the following recipients:
Recipient address: @
Reason: bad address syntax
For whatever reason, it believes I'm only sending it to '@' and it never reads the actual email address that I've entered for this contact. It may not even be part of the Contacts, but just an auto-fill function..
Anyone have any ideas on how to delete this '@' address association with my specific contact?
Thanks

• Has anyone got a script to read a list of email addresses from a Mail message and put them into a group in Contacts?

Has anyone got a script to read a list of email addresses from a Mail message header and put them into a group in Contacts?

Now Tony, I know you can't hear my tone on a forum post but I was not complaining, simply stating facts . This change brought several people in my office to a grinding halt in a long established workflow that is really rather simple (and I thought was already assumed from the original post above ):
1) Select a set of records in FileMaker Pro 12 and export only their e-mail addresses as a CSV file.
2) Open that CSV file in Excel.
3) Copy the column of e-mail address.
4) paste into the appropriate recipient field in Mail.
5) Send
If I were to complain it would be about Apple's typically opaque approach to updates. There is no granular explanation of why changes were made or even "what" changes were made.
Complaining is futile since Apple is Apple and is unlikely to change, but sometimes it is cathartic to "shout into the void" .
I had thought about doing something with a formula in Excel and your suggestion was simple and helpful. Again, however, it is only a workaround for a long established helpful behavior that Apple has inexplicably broken/removed in Mavericks Mail.
I, and the other posters here, would love to have the capability back rather than have to add previously unneeded steps to our workflows.
Ultimately we may add scripting steps to the FileMaker side to export the address lists with commas inserted already if Apple ends up having permanently removed this feature.

• How can I purge a bad address from iPad Mail?

I have entered a bad address for my husband, thinking it was his correct e-mail address. I finally figured out it was wrong(there was an extra letter in it) and I changed it in contacts to correct it(Mobile Me corrected it on all my devices).
Now when I type in his name to send him an e-mail, iPad keeps wanting to send it to the old incorrect address, instead of the corrected address shown in contacts. Please tell me how I can purge the incorrect address from the mail program.

The more times that you use the correct email address, the sooner the correct address should come up as the first option in the list. Still can't delete it, but eventually the correct address should pop up as the first option over the incorrect address.

• How to change To address in Lion Mail message list pane

I quite like the new Lion Mail app although I return to "Classic Layout" whenever I need to sort and clean up my inbox, but for general use the two-column layout with the message list on the left and the selected message content on the right works nicely for me. I would however like very much to change the "To" line in the message list. Currently my list of received messages shows "To" on the first line to the right of a picture of the "To" person. On the far right of this line is the time or date of receipt in blue. Under this first line is a little icon with "To" or "Cc" - sometimes, and that is followed by the subject. On the right of this second line is the mailbox and account. I have set preview to no lines to keep the list as compact as possible.
What I would dearly like to change is the To address in the first line. I know who the To is - it's Me! Occasionally the To shows another name if that person precedes my name in the list of recipients. What would be VERY useful is if this data showed the From address!
In the Classic View I can move the email columns around, adding new columns and removing them. Either way, in my inbox I can have the From address right in front of me. Is there any way of changing the To address to the Originator address - the From address - in the message list in Lion mail?
Thanks - Lawrence

Thanks, but that controls the header detail shown for the message in the right pane. So if I select a message in the message list on the left pane, the method you describe controls what header detail I see in the right pane when the selected message is displayed. The piece of data I really want to change is the first line of the message information contained in the message list in the left pane. It currently shows the To address in this window, which is useless to me; the From address on that first line - next to a picture from my address book of whoever is sending the message - would be infinitely more useful.

• 501 5.1.7 Bad sender address syntax

Hi,
My Exchange Environment contains
Two Exchange 2010 SP3 CAS/HUB servers with WNLB configured
Two Exchange 2010 SP3 Mailbox servers with DAG
External mail is send via a smarthost - Sophos Email Appliance
I have an application that sends mails to internal distribution lists, this lists contain contacts with external addresses.
This is used for 10 distribution lists and delivers mails to the external contacts for 9.
The one that is not delivering gives the following error in Exchange Tracking Log
501 5.1.7 Bad sender address syntax
I have tried to recreate the contact but no joy.
I can mail the contact from my Outlook profile.
I can mail the contact from the account stated in my Application via Outlook.
Anyone seem this error before ?

Hello,
Since Outlook works fine, I think the issue is more related to the configuration of the APP.

• UTL.MAIL error ORA-29279: SMTP permanent error: 501 Address Syntax Error in

Hi,
I am new to the forum so please excuse if I post incorrectly without conforming to the standards.
We need to send mails using the UTL.MAIL package and have installed them on the database.
Whenever I am trying to send an email I am getting the following error:
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-29279: SMTP permanent error: 501 Address Syntax Error in
[email protected]
ORA-06512: at "SYS.UTL_MAIL", line 654
ORA-06512: at "SYS.UTL_MAIL", line 671
ORA-06512: at line 2
The test code which I am running is as follows:
BEGIN
UTL_MAIL.send(sender => 'test <[email protected]>',
recipients => '[email protected]',
subject => 'UTL_MAIL test subject',
message => 'UTL_MAIL test body');
END;
I have tried different combinations:
BEGIN
UTL_MAIL.send(sender => 'test "<[email protected]>"',
recipients => '[email protected]',
subject => 'UTL_MAIL test subject',
message => 'UTL_MAIL test body');
END;
even tried
BEGIN
UTL_MAIL.send(sender => '[email protected]',
recipients => '[email protected]',
subject => 'UTL_MAIL test subject',
message => 'UTL_MAIL test body');
END;
Everytime I am getting the same error.
This seems to be working with an exchange mail server but never on the SMTP server.
In the SMTP server logs the sender address is not having the angular brackets <> unlike the other mails which are being sent over.
It seems that the SMTP server is pretty strict and the SMTP admin will not change any settings on the server.
The oracle version is as follows
Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
Could you please help me out with a solution.
Some how the angular brackets are geting stripped off (which UTL MAIL package generally does), Is there any way in which I can include the angular brackets.

I dislike UTL_MAIL - clunky and poor abstraction interface, and not well written.
Had a look at the code. It does this:
WHILE (ALL_RCPTS IS NOT NULL) LOOP
UTL_SMTP.RCPT(MAIL_CONN,'<' || GET_ADDRESS(ALL_RCPTS) || '>');
END LOOP;The GET_ADDRESS() function process the ALL_RCPTS parameter, returns the 1st address from it, and updates the (in/out) parameter with the remaining string.
SQL> var address varchar2(200);
SQL> exec :address := '<[email protected]>,[email protected]';
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> exec dbms_output.put_line( 'get_address='||UTL_MAIL.GET_ADDRESS(:address)||' address='||:address );
get_address=[email protected] address=[email protected]
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> exec dbms_output.put_line( 'get_address='||UTL_MAIL.GET_ADDRESS(:address)||' address='||:address );
get_address=[email protected] address=
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> The address is explicitly surrounded by brackets as per the RFC. So that is what your SMTP server should see.
If not - perhaps then our UTL_MAIL versions do not match. Cannot recall from what version I pulled and unwrapped the UTL_MAIL package code I have.
Personally though, I've ceased using UTL_MAIL a while back. It lacks in may respects. I have written my own mail package that supports multiple attachment, complex Mime formatting, attachments of 20+ MB in size, and so on - running on the UTL_SMTP interface (that provides the transport layer for sending mail). And for issues like you are facing, I suggest considering using UTL_SMTP directly.

• UTL_MAIL: ORA-29279..... 501 badly formatted MAIL FROM user - no " "

Hi guys,
I’m trying to redesign a current process that requires a large amount of manual intervention. As such I’d like to utilise UTL_MAIL to send notifications of system events but have been unable to get it to execute on my dev database (installed on my local PC).
O/S ver:
Windows XP SP3
Oracle ver:

TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.3.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.3.0 - Production
I’ve configured the smtp_out_server parameter:
SQL> sho parameter smtp_out_server;
NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
smtp_out_server                  string        XXX.XXX.XXX.80:25
And installed the required Oracle built in packages:
SQL> @C:\oracle_builtins\utlmail.sql
Package created.
Synonym created.
SQL> @C:\oracle_builtins\prvtmail.plb
Package body created.
No errors.
I’ve compiled a simple test version of the code:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE test_email IS

UTL_MAIL.send(sender     => '[email protected]',
recipients => '[email protected]',
subject    => 'UTL_MAIL test subject',

END;
+/+
SQL> @C:\procs\email_proc.sql

Any ideas? Does the package produce any log files / alerts that I could check or is it possible to execute in a verbose mode so I can debug?
Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to the forum.
That error comes from your SMTP server, and it indicates there's something wrong with the email address.
You could try the following and see if that works:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE test_email
IS
BEGIN
UTL_MAIL.send(sender => 'test <[email protected]>',
recipients => '[email protected]',
subject => 'UTL_MAIL test subject',
message => 'UTL_MAIL test body'
END;
/Some more inputs can be read here: Reg.SMTP Error while using UTL_MAIL in Oracle 10g
Also, when you want post formatted examples, just use the {noformat}{noformat} tag before and after your examples.
So, when you type:
{noformat}select *
from dual;{noformat}
it will appear as:select *
from dual;when you post it.

• Mail won't send if recipients include bad address?

I've been having a problem sending email on occasion, and it seems to be linked to a recipient in the recipients list (To, BCC, or CC) having a bad address. Mail won't tell me which recipient is incorrect, though. I'm trying to send out an email to a mailing list that includes a number of recipients, and it's a pain trying to determine which address is incorrect. Any way to force Mail to send the message regardless? Or maybe to find out which address it's choking on?

That doesn't help me much- I've already divided the mailing list into 9 different groups. I'm trying to minimize the amount of email going out to the recipients.
I ended up just using my ISP's web email client to send the message to each group, and then removed the addresses for the recipients that bounced.
I could have sworn that Mail had the same behavior in a previous version (letting me send to "bad" addresses). It would be nice to either have that behavior back, or at least have Mail tell me addesses it's choking on instead of telling me that a server isn't working...
