512 MB or 1 GB graphic card memory for PS CS5?

To make use of acceleration by the GPU in Photoshop CS5 Extended, to what extent is the amount of graphic card memory needed influenced by the size of the image file?
I am aware of the stated 128MB minimum, "256 MB or more" recommendation for graphic card memory. And I'm aware that certain features only become available with at least 512 MB.
However, I'm not at all clear how this works out in practice for moderately large image files.
A 1920 x 1200 display at 8 bits per color, 3 colors, only needs about 7 MB to display the screen, and that is independent of the size and resolution of the actual image being displayed. But considering now the image file, a square 120/220 film image scanned at 4000 dpi, 16 bits per color, will produce a file size of over 450 MB; a 4 x 5 inch color sheet film image scanned at 2400 dpi, 16 bits per color will be over 600 MB. I want capability for at least those two file sizes, and preferably greater.
In order to make full use of GPU hardware acceleration for Photoshop CS5 Extended, does the entire image file have to fit into the graphic card memory? (If so, is that calculated at 8 bits per color (the output to the screen), or at the 16 bits per color of the image file?). If not, are there any other guidelines as to how much graphic card memory is really needed or recommended?
Normally, I would just choose 512 MB or 1 GB, which appear to be the most common graphic card memory sizes for current consumer graphic cards. But I don't want to underspec. And I don't want to overspec either, because I need to maintain a dual boot with both 32-bit Vista and 64 bit W7, plus my BIOS doesn't appear to permit memory remapping, so graphic card memory will eat into overall DRAM space (presumably on both 32 and 64 bit Windows).
Thanks.

I am presently developing software using OpenGL and GPU acceleration.   I have exceeded the capacity of texture memory on purpose, and what I saw was that the card/drivers degraded the image a little (e.g., pixels were doubled vertically).  That happened only during a test when I was purposefully trying to exceed limits with more than 1 GB of texture data just to see what would happen.
I have a 1 GB ATI 4670, and in all the time I've actually just USED it with Photoshop - other than pushing limits with my own software on purpose - I've never seen any evidence whatsoever that the GPU memory had been used up.
From another perspective, given that a display contains only a few megapixels, and that Photoshop is substantially a 2D app, even if the display image data were to be kept in an outrageous double precision floating point format (which I don't think it is) it would be hard to imagine using up even close to a thousand megabytes, even with multiple monitors on task.  Without knowing exactly what Photoshop does under the covers it would be hard to estimate with more certainty than just a wild guess, though.
Generally speaking, even a modest card like the one I have seems to accelerate anything Photoshop can throw at it smoothly (I don't use the 3D stuff in Photoshop, though myself as I don't have extended).  Decent 1 GB cards aren't all that much more expensive...

  • Graphic Card Upgrade for HP-Pavilion dv6t-7000

Hello. I have the HP Pavlilion dv6t-7000 with the NVIDIA GT650M 1GB grpahics card. Now because of my work, i need to extends my graphic card memory. So I want to ask if my laptop is possible to upgrade to GT650M 2GB card.
My product number is A5F74AV. And my wannary is end on 8/24/2013.
And this laptop is a gift of my aunt from USA, and I'm living in Viet Nam now. So if yes, can HP Vietnam do the upgrade for me? My aunt's family is very busy so I can't resend my laptop and ask them to return to you.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi:
The only way to upgrade the video card in your notebook is to replace the entire motherboard which would cost as much as buying a new notebook with better graphics.
If you had HP do the upgrade, it would probably cost more than buying 2 notebooks with better graphics than yours.

  • Graphic card help for Pr and Ae use

    Hi there great community :)
I'm currently working with only the on-board graphic card, and of course I should upgrade as my GPU is working on 99% on large renders and they are slow...
I've been recommended the GeForce nvidia 2-4GB gtx 760, but neither the 750 or 760 are listed as supported graphic cards in the premiere cc system requirements.
Is there a reason for this or should I ignore that?
Is there a good reason for spending a little extra cash on the 4 GB vs the 2 GB card ?
What exactly will a graphic card do for my performance? (I'm not a computer expert)
My general use is premiere cc and after effects cc
    Hope you'll help. Greatly appreciated!
    Nice weekend to all :)

Premiere accelerates both playback and export with the  GPU. AE Ray Tracer acceleration is far more limited and will only be used for a limited functions.

  • Graphics card update for windows 7 problem

Hi, I have a 24" iMac 2008 it requires a graphics card upgrade for installing windows 7 i have 10.7 lion running, but it says on checking available disks that it cannot be installed on this disk as it requires 10.6  any ideas the update says 10.6 or later

The only thing I can think of is maybe Apple doesn't have a Lion compatible Firmware installer?
If nobody else hops in here with another idea then the only thing I can think of is to get an external HD and install 10.6 back on to it and boot from there and give it ago. If anything you now have a back up disk?
Maybe try the iMac forums to see how they did it. Just mention you were here already.
But you MAY have to swap the drives as the firmware installer might not work via booted from an external drive, just the nature of the beast.

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 graphic card memory problem

    Hello,
Ive recently bought a new Lenovo 3000 N200, which has a onboard graphic card Intel X3100 with 256MB (shareable) memory.
The problem is, it shows, in the Intel media graphic accelerator driver (under information) it has only 128MB.
This is a copy-paste of the info, the graphic driver shows me:
    DirectX* Version:        9.0
    Physical Memory:        2038 MB
    Minimum Graphics Memory:    8 MB
    Maximum Graphics Memory:    128 MB
Graphics Memory in Use:    10 MB
So i would like to know, how can i extend this shareable memory (tried in BIOS, but theres nothing there).
    Thanks in advance.

Okay, some of you people are using the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics rather than the Intel X3100 graphics chipset. The GMA 950 is supposedly to have the maximum shared v ram of 224 mb, but this is only accessable only when the ram is paired and also depends on the motherboard chipsetyou are using. This is also true for the Intel x3100 graphics chipset. However, the catch is that the shared vram is not the bottleneck, you can still play WoW if youwith all the graphics setting to low.

  • Graphics card selection for Premiere Pro  - CUDA core vs Memory bit

    Hi,
I currently have the following configuration.
    Intel i5 Quad Core.
    8 GB DDR3 RAM
    120 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD
I have plans for upgrading quadcore to i7 six core processor soon.
I don't have a graphic card now. My work will be editing mostly 720P footages and sometimes 1080p. I may also color grade but not all the time.
I had selected GTX 660 Ti at first. But the retailer told me it's outdated. They suggested me GTX 760 and GTX 960 (of Zotac). I liked GTX770
I am confused regarding the CUDA cores and memory bit. Which one is important for determining the performance of the video card in editing. Any help is much appreciated.
I have a tight budget so please don't suggest me costly cards.
    Thanks,
    SB

You want the highest bit width.  GPUs I have noticed from going from GTX 650 to GTX 970 in premiere CC 2014 is its only going to help with effects and transitions that use GPU assistance and timeline playback.  You'll see GPU assist with rendering if you have effects and transitions that use GPU otherwise it'll sit idle.  Now what I have also noticed is during playback I would have some hiccups with the 650 where the 970 just played right through them, so I think its how the program uses the memory is important so if you have a wider bus move data can get through faster and also the more bandwidth the faster the card will be so the 760 and the 770 will be much fast cards.  The 960 would be better power efficient but personally I recommend the 970 over them all if not then those higher end 7xx. 960 will get you by but  760 and 770 will get you by faster.

  • Processor and graphics card upgrade for hp dc5100 MT(EF633US)

Can someone kindly tell me a variety of Intel processors and graphic cards which i can install in my pc coz right now i'm using Intel pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz and Intel 82915G/GV/910GL express chipset. but i would like to upgrade to a faster processor and a graphics card which can play games which require large graphic memory (eg FIFA 2013,GTA 5.etc)

    Hi:
Personally, I wouldn't invest the money to upgrade that PC.
You would be better off getting an off lease newer dc5800 MT or dc7800/dc7900 model that has a PCIe x16 video slot.
The killer for your model is you can only install a PCI graphics card.
Very inefficient and pretty expensive for what you get in return.
After you install the required microcode update, the best processor I know for sure you can install would be the P4 650.
Below is the link to the quickspecs.  The supported processors are listed on page 7.
I do not know of anyone who that has installed the 651 or 661 processors and got them to work--even though the specs state they are supported.
You can try the 651 or 661 and if you do, please let me know if they worked for you.

1 Year Limited Parts & Labor Warranty
Email and fax support M-F from 9am-6pm EST

Here are the major failings of that "workstation":
    1) The power supply is much too weak to handle an upgrade to a GTX 570. Heck, that PSU might not have been capable of actually handling even its claimed 350W - but more like 200W. As such, it's barely capable of handling even that "workstation"'s base configuration with integrated Intel HD 2000 graphics. You will definitely need a new power supply (at least 550W, but preferably 750W to 850W) right away before you can even upgrade the graphics card at all.
    2) That PC has only one hard disk. Adobe requires a minimum of at least one additional hard disk (preferably two or more additional disks) in order to run Premiere Pro acceptably well.
    3) Change out the H67 motherboard for a Z68 motherboard. H67 cannot overclock the "limited-overclockable" i7-2600 CPU at all. And even with a Z68 motherboard, the fastest that you can run that non-K i7-2600 would be 3.9GHz.
    4) As you stated, that small case will not be enough. You will need a much bigger case to handle the load from Premiere Pro plus all of the hardware upgrades that I'm suggesting.
Also, keep in mind that the company only offers "lifetime" technical support if you don't tinker with the PC's innards at all - not even a minor hardware upgrade or only for a vendor-approved hardware upgrade such as RAM. Once you open that case for a non-vendor-approved hardware upgrade (e.g. an upgraded power supply, an upgraded GPU or upgraded cooling), you will no longer have technical support from that company that you're getting the PC from.
As currently equipped, that system will run about 25 to 30 times slower than a fast PC. Look at payal's 622-second result running 5.0.3 on the PPBM5 results list, with the same CPU, chipset and integrated graphics as your system: It is already more than 12 times slower (in terms of the Relative Performance Index) than a fast system - and that system is already running two disks. With only one disk for absolutely everything - the OS, media, projects, previews, cache and exports - it would be much slower than even that because SATA is only a half-duplex interface, not a full-duplex interface. As a half-duplex interface, SATA can only deliver data transfers in one direction at a time. However, video editing programs like PPro require simultaneous reads and writes. This means that the single disk must wait for data transfers in a given direction to be completed before any data starts transferring in the opposite direction.

  • What is the best Graphic Card Option for me?

I have a first generation Quad Core Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900XT with dual DVI Connections for my two older Apple 24" LCD Displays. I want the best card to run Adobe CS5 and support dual DVI for my 2 monitors. I was told maybe the ATI 4870 or 5770. What would be the best card for CS5 and Final Cut Studio?

300 dollars.. 250 for the backplane board(661-5706), and for the single processor tray(661-5707) - your price may vary.. I got mine for 50 dollars.
so, for 300 dollars.. you can make your 2009 mac pro into a 2010.. and yes, you can use the same existing processors.. the good news is that 1333 mhz memory works with the following processors in the new board: W3570, W3580(High end 3.33 2009 mac pro quad which was 1400.00 extra as a configure to order on apple's store from a 2.66 quad-core at 2499.99), and finally the W3680.
I am running still my w3580 with now 8GB of DDR3 1333 mhz memory.. it was 1066, but i got 1333 for a great price..
If you want to know more information about this, please send me a private email.
I can help you if you want..
Please note: if you have the 4870 HD Apple version, and not pc flashed, the sensor reading is too high for the 2010's firmware... you will need the GT120 or the 5770 graphics card.. 5870 is not going to be available for sometime and there is rumor from AMD themselves stating the card might be EOL..

  • Is iMac graphics card sufficient for Photoshop CS6

I'm considering purchasing a new 21.5-inch iMac that comes equipped with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR5 memory. Will this graphics card be sufficient to run Photoshop CS6?

Your query has an answer in more details here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html. If you see this section which says
Tested video cards for Photoshop CS6
    nVidia GeForce 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 series .
Hence 650M will fall under this range and is supported to run Photoshop CS6.
