512 ssd vs 256 ssd 750 hdd 7200rpm?

Hi I read that several people configure 256gb ssd + 750gb hdd 7200rpm, cause they use the ssd for applications and the hhd for storage. But in general you
will be working with both of them right? example whatch a movie. The program is on ssd but the movie is on hdd. So it will load faster on a plain 512 ssd or 2x256 ssd?

Ralph your response is way off. The answer to OP's question mostly depends on write performance of the SSD, especially after the SSD has become full and the OS is starting to erase previously deleted (but not yet fully erased) blocks. That is when the SSD starts to slow down, and then the TRIM feature of SSD controller needs to be benchmarked. To answer the OP's question, one needs to run benchmarks of various use cases, especially against an aged SSD.
I found this question myself googling for answers to same topic. Most benchmarks do not seem to be testing aged SSDs, but brand new out of the box SSDs that will usually smoke even 7200RPM drives. But what happens 3 months later after the SSD virgin blocks have been written to at least once and then it starts it slow erase cycles?
Read performance of the SSD will always be faster than the 7200RPM drive, esp when comparing random access or fragmented file system accesses. So why does write performance matter if you aren't, for example, doing heavy write tasks like saving video files? Because the OS does tons of little random reads AND writes just sitting there... anything you do like open a new browser tab or start a Flash player will open up temp files for writing... so write performance becomes quite important if writes start to get really slow for any reason.
edit: some anecdotal evidence that aging the SSD is not slowing down write for modern SSDs vs the bad experience I had with 1st gen SSDs.

Yes, as long as the drive has the same physical characteristics (2.5", SATA III) it doesn't matter what the capacity is. Obviously just make sure you have less than 512 GB on your existing drive if you are planning on transferring the information to the replacement drive.

SSD and HDD Installed but it runs super slow? Please Help!

Hi, I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7
8gb of ram. My hard drive died in my mac and I decided to replace it with an SSD and installed an HDD in the optical bay following Ifixit instructions. I booted into internet recovery and installed Mountain Lion (as it would not let me do a straight Yosemite install from a flash drive I had made on my gf's macbook, because it couldn't authenticate). After booting up and declining the usual iCloud prompts, I rebooted and installed Yosemite from the USB. It took a while, but eventually i booted up.
I moved my home folder to the HDD a 7200rpm Western Digital Black, which is in the optical bay, (the SSD is a Samsung 340 Pro and is installed in the Drive bay). Everything appears to be functioning, but it's slower that it had ever been using Yosemite on the HDD that had died. It take 35-40 seconds just to open System Preferences. I have used First aid on both drives via the Recovery and repaired permissions on both. I have reset the ram using option-command-r-p. I have booted into Safe Mode and Restarted the computer multiple times. Just opening a second safari window causes the spinning wheel to go for ten seconds or so. If anyone knows anything I can do, please help! I'm at a loss as to what I can do to fix this.
I'm really not sure what is going on. It seems to take a very long time to load a website, but after using safari for a bit, the app doesn't seem to have a problem responding to commands, just takes way too long to load anything. System preferences is all of a sudden crazy snappy, but is giving me the spinning rainbow wheel when I try and click on a pane saying "Could not load Users & Groups preference pane." After I click "okay" and try again it loads right up. Grrr.

Symbolic linker ssd and hdd

I have a macbook pro 15 inch mid 2012 (not retina) with Mountain Lion and Bootcamp Windows 7 Ultimate both stored on main bay SSD. I replaced my superdrive with the HDD and have an external superdrive. Was wondering how to Symbolic Link both OS from SSD to HDD. SSD Intel 520 180 GB is filling up fast but HDD has plenty of room 750 GB. Also i have norton on Winows 7 patition do i now need norton for osx as well? Dont want to lose the speed of SSD but am about to give up and put HDD back into main bay. Any ideas would be great Thank you -)

Not sure where to place my SSD and HDD. Macbook Pro mid 2010, 2,4GHz intel core 2 duo.

I read a forum saying that since my MBP is 2010, my HDD should stay in the main bay, and the SSD in the optical drive due to gb/s or somthing?

For best performance place the "system disk" in the internal slot and the second disk in the optical bay. I assume your SSD will be your system disk.

T500 SSD vs HDD (new purchase)

I want to buy a T500 today and I am having a very difficult time making up my mind when it comes to the hard drive. I don't really have the money to upgrade to an SSD, but I would rather be a little more in debt if it is hands down a far superior choice. I will choose either the 128Gb SSD, the 320GB HDD (7200RPM 0r 5400).
From the research I have done, the things I am most concerned about when it comes to the SSD are drive life, time degredation, and the quality of the drive itself. I am unclear how much of a difference an upgrade like this will produce.
I would really appreciate hearing any and all advice. I want to get this things done so I can stop agonizing.

A good SSD would definitely be very beneficial to a laptop. I have a T500 myself, I have upgraded the harddrive to a 120GB OCZ Vertex. Whether if it's benchmarks or normal day use, I can tell you that it is a LOT faster than any traditional laptop harddrive I have a Seagate 7200.4 myself. Whether you should upgrade the harddrive depends on what you do with ur laptop, because SSDs are still very expensive these days. If you travel a lot SSD will help a lot since it is not affected by shock, SSDs will also make your thinkpad dead silent. With regard to the 128GB SSD lenovo offers, it is a samung SSD, personally I would not recommend you to buy this SSD, you will not notice much performance gain from the traditional harddrive, because the samsung SSD lenovo offers is a bit old, and is slow only 90MB/s read and 70MB/s write. A good SSD would be the OCZ Vertex or if you have the money Intel X-25M.
The OCZ Vertex with the newest firmware 1.4 already supports TRIM, which will cure the drive degradation problem, the Intel X25-M drive will also support TRIM in the coming month.
With regards to drive life, the expected life for a SSD will be at least 10 years, by then i'm sure you would have upgraded to a new computer anyway.

Setting up a new SSD and HDD on iMac with separate libraries (itunes & aperture)

Hello.
I'm having a major problem with my iMac (July 2010 27" 2.8ghz). I recently operated on this guy and installed a 2TB HDD and a 256GB SSD. I backed up my previous setup using CCC onto a separate external HDD. I installed a "fresh" version of OSX Mountain Lion onto the SSD and used Migration Assitant to transfer my applications and user settings. I then copied over the itunes folder and photos library folder over to the HDD. However, I cannot access the libraries of either using the SSD. I hold option down while opening either Aperture or Itunes and I am not allowed to select either of the libraries. Infact the iTunes one is grayed out and the folder holding the Aperture Library is locked (Red circle with a white dash).
Ultimately what I want to do is have the SSD provide the system and the applications and have my music, videos, and photos on the HDD. I have been reading all sorts of boards but I can't get anything to work. I'll completely start from scratch if needed.
BTW the SSD is so fast on this machine.

The original folders for iTunes and Aperture Photo Library were marked with special Access Control List permissions. CCC picked these up during the duplication process to the HDD. When you put them back on the SSD, you likely used Finder, which either corrupted these settings or omitted them entirely. Now, iTunes and Aperture expect these ACL settings and block you without them.
To fix this issue, you need to reset the ACL on these folders back to factory defaults. Disk Utility cannot help as it works on things outside $HOME.
Reboot, holding down the option key. You will see the SSD, the HDD, and probably two 10.8 recovery partitions. Pick either recovery partition.
Once you are in Recovery, launch the Terminal from the Utility menu.
In Terminal, type resetpassword. This will launch a dialog box that shows both the SSD and HDD drives. Click on the SSD.
At the bottom of the dialog, you will see the reset ACL section. Click to set ACL back to default settings. This is only applied to specific files in your home directory that already have ACL settings. You are not resetting any passwords.
You are done. Exit terminal, and reboot from the Apple menu.
Test iTunes and Aperture on their respective folders.
This should solve your access issues on the SSD.
You can identify files or folders with ACL settings from the terminal with the ls(1) command.
See if the file has an ACL setting
$ ls -al
You are looking for the trailing '+' in the permission field.
Now peek at the specific ACL settings
$ ls -ale
You should use the ditto(1) command for low-level directory structure copies in the future.
$ ditto /Volumes/HDD/Users/homedir/Music /Users/homedir

SSD and HDD / TimeMachine and CCC

I have a 240GB SSD as my main drive and it had all of my data on it.
Recently I installed the OWC data doubler and put a 500GB HDD in place of the superdrive.
Since then, I copied my "home" folder (under /Users) to the new 500GB HDD.
After this I went into user settings and set the path to the new drive, so new files created will be stored on the HDD instead of the SSD now.
I have yet to delete the DUPLICATE data on the SSD. (in case this method wont work)
My question is about TimeMachine:
Right now I have TWO external drives to back up my data.
Drive 1: 2TB
Partitioned into 1.5TB for TM and the other 500GB for Carbon Copy Cloner.
This drive (1) has been backing up my system since the beginning, Before my "home" folder was moved.
Drive 2: 1TB
Partitioned into two separate 500GB sections.
TM is set up to back up the data on the drive (HDD - which there has been no data to back up as of now)
The other partition is for CCC, which also has not been used yet because there is no data on the HDD (not SSD).
The question is:
Since I moved my "home" folder (or directory, whatever) to the new 500GB HDD, and changed the settings to have all "data" be stored on that drive, will TM back it up as if it were all still on my main SSD?
And if it will NOT back up as a single drive, will the data duplicate in TM? (I dont want to have duplicate backups)
If it will make duplicate backups, would I be able to erase the external drive and start fresh and have it just backup as if it were a single disk? (something I am interested in, especially since I can then encrypt my external drive)
Is it stupid to have 1.5 TB for TM and 500GB for CCC? Should I just partition it into TWO 1TB drives? (Since my 240+500=740GB of space...)
A few more things Im concerned about.
My second external drive has time machine on it for the data on the HDD, but the "home" directory or folder is now stored on the drive and if TM will back it up as if it were a single drive, then TM on the second external drive becomes pointless. (Correct?)
Now I know that making duplicate backups of data is critical, so I suppose I could just have TM set up for the second drive, but also back up the main drive, as if it were the single drive (so it would back up my SSD and HDD, just like my primary external drive)
A good set up would be go partition the SECOND external drive with a 750GB partition and the rest for a 250GB. Then TM would have enough space to back up both internal drives (just like the primary external) and then the 250 could just be a clone of the SSD (using CCC- and this would be a duplicate clone)
So this leaves me with two TM external backups and then two CCC backups.
Please tell me if I left out any details. I know its a lengthy description!

Sorry about that one. There are THREE not just two, about SSDs, and the iMac SSD + hdd one.... well that one was private (not sure why).
Most questions have been asked/answered, multiple more than once, times, and therefore: public bookmarks and search please. (some gets asked almost daily, a few multiple times in one DAY of all things).
I'd like to see pdf guide and error messages, faq and how to articles re-written, updated, and checked for errors.
www.apple.com/support/bootcamp is where I usually send people to seek out the pdf and do some readiing and backups. you will need backup no matter what.
Windows won't install iwth two drives/devices with GPT so you have to remove or reformat the data drive for now.

Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD under CSM mode

I upgraded my Portege R30-ASMBN22 to SSD (Crucial M550) and replace the optical drive by the original HDD with caddy.
In order to install Windows 7, I change the BIOS to CSM mode. But now the system won't boot automatically from the SSD. It only boot from HDD which is in the ODD spot.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my SSD and I can boot from it correctly. However, if I don't press F12 when it starts. It will always try to boot from HDD.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSD and HDD. Is there any other way to change the boot order among HDD and SSD?

Can I make a bootcamp Partition on the HDD on an iMac 21.5" with SSD and HDD

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5" . I am not sure yet, whether to get one with ssd and hdd pre-installed. But I would like to, cause it's much faster.
In the manual of the boot camp it says that if you have more than one internal hard drive and you wanna put bootcamp on one that isn't the first, you have to remove the other hard drives. That would be hard cause you can't open the iMac easily. And especially not without loosing guarantee.
So my question is. Has anyone installed windows with bootcamp on an hdd partition on an iMac pre-installed with ssd (on which is macos x) and hd(on which I want my windows partition and the Mac files such as photos and videos)? It must be possible without opening the iMac right?

That article is misleading to an extent and applied to the workstations with 4 internal drives and easy to access - and misleading as to why other drives had to be removed etc.
As for warranty, it use to be a customer upgraded part to swap out hard drives. All that is needed to disconnect the data cable going to the drive.

SSD + slower HDD

Despite the abundant discussions about good hard drive configuration for Lightroom (v 4), I am still struggling to understand what to choose when buying my new desktop PC without blowing my budget.
Assume that processor, RAM, motherboard and all that are up to par, what should I go with in terms of HDD/SSD (under a somewhat limited budget)?
I want a *quiet* system so using three roaring 10,000 rpm HDDs is no option. If anything I would like to use low power and low noise HDDs (5400 rpm), which could be combined with an SSD. Is this a stupid setup with the HDDs being a bottle neck? For example, is a 128 GB SSD (for Windows 7/64 OS, apps, LR cache) + 1 TB 5400 rpm HDD (for the image files) a good trade-off between performance and noise?
