5130 Connectivity and Ubuntu

I'm hoping somebody can help me.
I have been using a Sony Ericsson W900i with my Dell Mini-9 Netbook that runs with Ubuntu 8.04LTS, all I had to do was connect the USB cable to the netbook and handset and Ubuntu saw it as a network connection, was able to browse, send/receive email etc.
I have just "upgraded" to a Nokia 5130 and it's not working in this way.
On the Ubuntu forums I did find this:
connect Nokia to USB & select "PC Suite" mode

below adapt Baud & Init3 depending on modem & cell Internet Provider APN
you can find world APN lists on internet or ask your cell operator
Phone field maybe adapt too

sudo wvdial

CONNECT
--> local IP address bla.bla.bla.bla
So I know I can "force" a connection, but it is far from user friendly to do this everytime I want to use the Nokia. I'm looking and rolling out a lot of netbooks and mobile phones to field staff so need to find a solution at present my solution is not to use Nokia

Thanks for the reply DeepestBlue. Kinda of ironic that Nokia's tag line is "Connecting People" and yet they seem so slow to actually help people get connected, especially when they were involved in an open source project for bluetooth.
I guess I could create a script and configure sessions in Ubuntu to run it, not a really an ideal solution but thanks for the idea it's an option. My problem is that the field staff will be given the netbooks, which will be configured to run an application when the start up. The vast (95-98%) of the users are non-technical so we have tried to make the system as easy as possible to run, in fact we have removed everything from the desktop and disabled gmone-panel so that they can't accidentally click the wrong thing
I actually tested a 7310 Supernova last night and had the same problem.
