Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
Are you releasing the home button when you see the connect to iTunes screen? Does iTunes start on its own? If it doesn't - start iTunes yourself.

    5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:

  • My Sony Xperia Z won't start /turn on after failed update attempt

Try this  connect your phone to the wall charger > press andhold power & volume up > let it charge for 1 or 2 hours > after 2 hours > repair your phone with SUS Update Service (SUS) http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/ http://www-support-downloads.sonymobile.com/Software%20Downloads/Update_Service_Setup-2.11.12.5.exe PC Companion (PCC)  Bridge (for Mac)   Alternatives on How to backup Xperias http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/36355

A similar problem to the other posters, my Sony Xperia Z won't start after a failed update attempt. Following the support suggestions on the Sony website (http://www.sonymobile.com/sg/support/faq/w8-walkman-phone/update-software/software-update-failed-ps101/) failed. Solutions posted on this forum thread (http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z-ZL-ZR/My-Sony-Xperia-Z-won-t-start-turn-on-after-failed-update-attempt/m-p/401787#M20133) have also failed. When I plug the phone into the wall charger, the LED comes on red, the SONY logo appears on my screen, followed by a message indicating that "The Software update failed. Make sure that your phone is connected to the computer and try again.", and then the phone turns itself off. The cycle repeats itself with no indication that my phone's actually being charged. Since it is unable to charge, plugging the phone into my computer does not trigger the update process to start, so I can't "try again", as the message so helpfully suggests. The computer also does not recognise my phone as being connected despite following the PC Companion's instructions to 1) unplug the device, 2) remove and replace the battery (which I can't do, because the battery is built in), and 3) turn it back on (which, again, I can't do, because the phone won't charge in the first place), before 4) plugging it back into the computer. Please help... Thank you.

  • IPhone 4 in recovery mode after failed update with most recent software (3/25/13), I only have the past 30 days worth of photos and my contacts in iCloud, how do I get the rest of my pictures off of my phone? I have read the apple article already.

Basically headline says it all, my phone is in recovery mode following a failed update through the phone and I want all my photos back.  I have already read the "iOS: Unable to Update or Restore" and it indicates that when restoring through iTunes, you lose all data on the phone. I have checked my iCloud (I am a Windows7 user so uploading does not happen automatically, as I unfortunately just figured out) and it only will upload my past 30 days of photos and contacts, inline with what I've read about the cloud only storing 30 days of your past data. I really would like to get all of my photos off of my phone, I had photostream activated and most were in that stream. Is there anything I can do? I don't know what operating system is on there currently, but I have always updated my phone succesfully until today when this happened, so I'm assuming whatever is most up to date until today is the OS it has. Thank you!

When your phone is in recovery mode, it's like it crashed.  The only way that you can get it out of recovery mode is by restoring, and this erases all your data as well.
You can believe what you wish by "reading all over the internet".  This is Apple's technical support forum.  We do know what we're talking about.
since you have very important photos on your phone, why haven't you been importing them to your computer as soon as possible after taking them?  This is how the phone is meant to be used.  Keeping critical data on only a device which can be easily stolen, dropped and broken is just plain foolish.  Also, did you not back up your phone (as you should be doing with any computer) before attempting any operating system update?  As you've now just painfully learned, updates do not always go as planned.
I'm sorry for your data loss, but let this be a very important lesson.  BTW, when was the last time you backed up your computer?  I'm sure you have important data on your computer.  Hard drives WILL fail.

  • Blocked after failed update

Hello, Hope you are doing well,
5 or 6 days back i shut down my windows 8 laptop and it started updating. the update went on for about 8 to 10 hours and the machine restarted. on restart it said failed to update and it 'restored.'
the issue is that after this failed update i see a watermark on the left bottom corner that says Activate Windows. i ignored it for a few days, even went to 'PC settings' from the start menu but did not find a way to 'Activate' windows. I hope you are aware
that the windows 8 series isn't very user friendly when it comes to settings menu. so i went through a couple of threads and learnt that my key was blocked.
Help restore or update windows to an active version.
P.S.: I have brought a genuine windows 8 with the laptop from an HP certified dealer in Mumbai. the key was accepted by Microsoft on various occasions until this happened.
also the system was infected by a trojan and malware for about a month. which was removed by running bit-defender.  Need any more info? please solve this issue.

  • Installer failing after failed update

I ran Software update on my girlfriend's iBook G4 and it failed on the most recent security update and on Safari 3.1.2. I let the computer reboot and went to try it again, but Software Update immediately exists. I then tried to manually download the software packages and install them but installer then crashes. I had to run installer in a terminal to get the following crash report:
    dyld: NSAddImage() error
    dyld: Symbol not found: __ZN3KJS11Interpreter4markEv
    Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.frame work/Versions/A/WebCore

    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/WebKit

    logout
    Process completed
What can I do to recover the system?? Safari will not run either ...
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • Problem after failed update

    Hi everybody,
today after a failed update my Z3 Dual D6633 doesn't restart.
The message 'The software update failed. Make sure that your phone is connected to the computer and try again.' blinking on my screen.
The issue is that PC companion doesn't find my phone. I've tried all my USB ports but still doesn't work.
    Have you any suggestion ?
    Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You may need to perform a software repair using PC Companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 60% battery.
Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).
Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

  • MacBookPro Lion crash, loading during restart after failed updates.

During a restart phase after software updates (IPhoto, ITunes etc)my MacBookPro_Lion is not restarting anymore...just loading without reach login page. Was switched off due to low battery during restart phase after updates downloads. How can I solve it?
    Thanks.

Boot into your Recovery partition (if you can) by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there elect to resinatll the OS (you may need your Apple ID and password for this). You'll not erase any data, etc., by installing a fresh OS.
Once your OS install is complete, you can restart and go through the update process again, this time remembering not to unplug from mains while the updates are installing.

  • Ipod Touch Totally Dead After Failed Update to 4.0 OS

    Hi folks,
There is another discussion with the exact same title but the problem was never resolved. I decided to create a new discussion because I successfully revived my buddies iPod that had the same problem. I know a lot of people probably still have paperweight out-of-warranty iPods lying around, so here goes!
My friend had a 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch and uses iTunes on Windows XP. He plugged his iPod in one night and iTunes recommended he update to OS4. He was previously running the latest OS3 so he said "why not?!". Along went the update no problem until right before rebooting the iPod at the end. He reported that all of a sudden, the battery charging screen popped up with a fully charged green battery, then instantly changed to a red "dead battery" screen then it shut off entirely. That was it. Dead. Nothing he would do with the buttons gave any sign of life.
1 month later of researching, trying DFU mode and all sorts of attempts - still a dead, attractive paperweight with never a single pixel of light on the screen. He finally gave up and asked me to take a look at it.
I tried charging it overnight with a 110V to USB wall charger (as some people recommended) - no change.
I tried plugging it into a Mac (as some people also suggested) - no change, no signs of life.
Plugging it into a Windows XP machine gave an "Unknown USB device" or "USB device not recognized" error.
Well. I managed to get it into DFU (restore) mode and reinstalled OS4.2 with no problem (but it was not obvious) - now it is working again! A fully revived iPod Touch!
So, here is what I did:
    1. Left "charging" overnight with a wall-charger NOT THE USB PORT OF A PC OR MAC.
    2. Getting the iPod into DFU mode is tricky and a question of precise timing so it seems. The exact sequence that worked for me was: 1. HOLD the power button. 2. HOLD (at the same time) the Home button. 3. After 10 seconds, release the POWER button and continue to HOLD the Home button. Eventually, the PC or Mac should detect a new USB device and automatically install the driver for the DFU recovery mode. Once the iPod is detected in this mode, you can release the Home button. Note that you MUST have iTunes installed in order for the computer to install the driver for the iPod. If you do not have iTunes installed, Windows will still report the device as a "USB Device" and ask for the driver (contrary to the "Unknown USB device" or "USB device not recognized" errors). Once the device is happy in your OS, fire up iTunes and follow the instructions to restore your iPod. Enjoy! I recommend downloading/installing the LATEST ITUNES before recovering your device. Older versions of iTunes may contain the bug that killed your iPod the first time you tried updating.
Notes: 1. According to Apple, holding the 2 buttons down for 10 seconds and releasing both buttons at the same time simply performs a RESET of the iPod. It does not put it into DFU mode. You MUST continue holding the Home button after releasing the power button in order to get it to convert to DFU mode. I think this is where most people are having trouble. Also, it may have been a coincidence of the exact time I held the Home button after releasing the power button. Try holding it for different intervals after releasing the power button (i.e. 1 sec, 2 secs, 3 secs all the way to 10 secs or even more). BE PATIENT and don't give up! Unless your iPod has a real HARDWARE PROBLEM (which if it was working fine before you tried to update it probably does not), you can ALWAYS get it into DFU mode because that part is HARDCODED in a chip in the iPod and cannot be changed or damaged.
When I was playing with the iPod trying to get it in DFU mode, Windows would see it as a Unknown USB Device. Then sometimes it would disappear and come back as an Unknown USB device. This is a GOOD THING. That means that the iPod IS resetting as per Apple's instructions (which means the iPod DOES have some sort of life). After trying 4 or 5 times, I finally got it to disappear and reappear in DFU mode (as a simple "USB Device" because I did not have iTunes installed. After installing the latest iTunes, it installed the correct drivers automatically).
So give it a try and post your results! Good luck!

My friend had a 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch
Just for clarification so other people don't get confused and this misinformation keeps getting generated, Apple did not sell a 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch.
So, your friend must have a 2nd generation iPod Touch.
The 3rd generation was only made in the 32GB and the 64GB models.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#iPodtouchlate2009
The 2nd generation has A1288 stamped on the back
The 3rd generation has A1318 stamped on the back and again, only on the 32GB and 64GB models.
Some software is only designed for the 3rd generation and above so making sure what generation you have can be very important before you possibly buy something your iPod Touch can't use.
