5400 or 7200 drive for MBP 17''

Hallo,
I'm going to order a MBP 17'', but I'm still curious, if I should take the 120 GB 5400 rpm or the 100 GB 7200 rpm drive.
I guess 100 GB is plenty, so I won't miss the extra 20 GB, but are those 7200 drives louder ?
Are they really faster, so that you can 'feel' the difference ?
Which disk models are used in the 17'' MBP (Maybe some of those lucky guys with their new 17'' babys can check this..)
Thanks !!
regards
Marc

Please note how I said it will not increase performance for booting and normal operations.
I said:
If you work on audio or video where large blocks are captured or played back, the 7200rpm internal drive of the MacBook has a clear advantage over the stock 5400rpm internal drive. Doesn't make huge difference for normal booting/web/office work however.
You said:
That implies that it won't give you much advantage for booting and normal operations.
Same thing.
Also another article they did pitted the Momentus 7200K drive against others and they clearly conclude it's a good choice for an upgrade. The 7200.1 is the dxact drive I got from Apple as the upgrade, so it totally applies to this post.
http://www.barefeats.com/hard56.html
The conclusion was:
ANALYSIS
The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 takes notebook drive speed to a whole new level. It's not as fast as the fastest 2.5" [ed] 7200rpm drives but it's impressive nevertheless. And its quiet. It's a no brainer for a PowerBook internal drive replacement or as an external drive in a FireWire 800 enclosure.
WILL A 7200RPM NOTEBOOK DRIVE DRAIN MY BATTERY FASTER?
The short answer is, "Probably not."

  • Looking for recommendations - new internal drive for MBP

    Hi all,
I have a 17" MBP core 2 duo from a couple of years ago, with a 100GB 7200rpm drive. I want to swap out the drive with a new 500GB drive, still 7200rpm, so I'm looking for recommendations as to what people think are the current best of the crop. Any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Antonio

I was looking for a 500GB 7200RPM drive for my MBP 15" at the end of 2008, but no one made one yet. I saw the Seagate ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200RPM 16MB BUFFER SERIAL ATA listed as coming soon on MacMall and a few other places in January 2009 and ordered it as soon as it was available.
I had done some research on power consumption and performance... Tom's Hardware had some good info on the subject. The fastest drives at the time were the 320GB 7200 RPM and 500GB 5400 RPM. If the trends I came across during my research held up, power consumption for the new Seagate shouldn't have affected my battery life too much. All my research seemed to confirm this.
Now that I have been using the drive for a few months, I can tell you that my batter life has taken a HUGE hit. I used to easily get 5 hours with my old 120 GB stock drive... now, I'm lucky if I get 2 hours. Plus, it seems that this drive gets hot enough to cause performance issues.. I'm not sure if that's the case yet, but I will be bringing my MBP into the Apple store to check on it.
At this point, I'm willing to sacrifice some speed for more battery life and a cooler running computer.
All this to say, be sure you're willing to sacrifice some battery life for the biggest and fastest drive around.

  • Optical Drive for MBP Retina Display

I am trying to find an external optical drive for my new MBP with Retina Display late-2013. I would prefer a Blu-Ray dual-layer slim burner due to its acceptance of large storage media (for backup purposes). I am using Toast 10 Pro as a burning software. It would be a bonus if I could also play DVDs or Blu-rays from it (using XBMC or VLC media players). What would you recommend? Thank you.

  • Macbook Pro...5400 or 7200 drive?

I'm looking into trading in my Powermac G5 dual 2.5GHz for the newest 15" macbook pro, and I'm wondering which drive to get. I will be using it with FCP and Motion occasionally, but I have Mac Pro dedicated for most of the work. I plan on buying an external LaCie drive with FW800, and using it as my media drive for FCP, so I am wondering if upgrading to the 7200rpm drive is worth the $$$. I have been reading up on the speed/heat differences, but it's about a 50/50 split in opinions. Has anyone been using the Macbook Pro with a 5400rpm drive that has had speed issues when using FCS2 apps?

I've had two LaCie external drives fail me in the past couple years. One I have mounted in an ATA slot right now in a Mac Pro. I have tons of different types and LaCie is the only one I've really had problems with.
    And one Fantom drive too.

  • 7200 or 5400 portable hard drive for scratch drive?

I am trying to decide whether to buy a f7200rpm or 5400rpm portable hard drive to store some of my video footage on but seem to have conflicting answers on the topic. Basically, I need to offload some of my unedited footage from my MBP as it is taking up lots of room but I need also to have this with me when travelling so that I can continue working on it, therefore the need for a small portable hard drive. I have pretty much decided to get one of the G-tech mini drives, but should I get a faster 7200rpm for video, or will this make no difference, in which case a 5400rpm will have more capacity for the same price. I emailed G-Tech and their reply was a bit vague, basically saying that with firewire 800 there "might be a slight increase in performance", but I am still not sure what this means in real terms when working with video.
I thought the best place to ask was here, so if anyone can advise I would be grateful, thanks.

I have a single G-Tech mini fw400 case with a 5400 rpm drive that is perfectly useful for capturing and editing simple DV. But, I purchased it for simply capturing video while I was out of the studio. I would not use it for serious multi layer editing. If pressed, I would guess the limits have more to do with it being fw400 than the rotational speed.
What a faster rotational speed often does is give you faster seek times.
Still, if I were in the market today, I'd go with something like a two drive miniRAID system (eg Caldigit VRmini) that can connect via FW400, 800 or eSATA.

  • 5400 or 7200 HD for iMovie/Livetype Projects?

I'm planning on purchasing the new macbook. I've read numerous topics on users who are upgrading their hard drives to a 7200 instead of the stock 5400 by way of 3rd party vendors. I use iMovie consistently for projects as well as Livetype. Would I notice a huge improvement using the 7200 or would there be a minimal difference?
    Thanks...Greg

My personal recommendation is to get an EXTERNAL firewire drive. (7200RPM, of course)
iMovie will probably bennefit from a higher RPM drive. Not sure exactly how MUCH of a different it will be.
The differences in drive speed are more significant if you have low ram. Max out the ram first, then upgrade the drive to 7200RPM. I saw a huge improvement in overall system responsiveness when I upgraded my iBook G4 and my MacMini G4 to 7200RPM drives.

  • What is the correct replacement optical drive for MBP late 2007?

    Hello all,
I am finally getting around to replacing my failed SuperDrive, a Panasonic UJ-857E.
Reputable online resellers say the Panasonic UJ-867A will work.  I bought one.  It will not work, because the ribbon cable connector is a different shape than the connector on the original drive.
Local Apple store tried to order a ribbon cable that would work, but determined there is no such cable:  there is just no way to connect the UJ-867A to this MBP.
They kindly offered to get me a drive that will work from Apple, but $180 seems a little steep to me.  I asked them for the model / part number of this new drive, but they have so far declined.
Does anyone know with certainty what drive I should be looking for?  The MBP is late 2007, model # A1226.
    Thanks.

  • Bought USB 3.0 32GB Thumb Drive For MBP Retina - Format?

I bought a PNY 32gb Flash Drive, USB 3.0.  Wow, so much faster than my other 2.0 thumbs.
Like my other thumb drives it pops right in, the MBP immediately recognizes it, and your transferring files no problem, even very large 10 gig plus folders.  And there is no problem transferring files with co-workers who have PC's by other manufacturers.
The PNY drive is formatted MS-DOS (FAT).  One lone problem I have is that when I drag over my Microsoft User Data folder, I get a message that the 10.2 GB Folder with 515,000 items, "can't be copied because it is too large for the volume's format."  How do I resolve this as this folder contains my 10,000 plus e-mails in Entourage?
Can I solve this by reformatting my flash thumb drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" within the disc utility in Lion; and if so, will I still be able to swap files with this drive with my co-workers using Dell and Toshiba computers?
    THANKS!

I'm backing up emmarty on this one. It works.
I'm working with a Lexar 32Gb USB stick right now - one of many brands, sizes and formats. Initially I forgot that FAT was difference than ExFat formatting; I just fell into the "Uh, Windows is FAT; let's use that"-history. Didn't work, wanted to be formatted by Windows 7 (which didn't know what to do with a 32Gb device - suggested 200Mb).
Looking at it from a UX perspective, the odds are the UI isn't different enough for the user to note they're formatting it wrong. I'm calling user-error on this one.
Just because it's on the Internet doesn't mean it's right. Ask Pierre Salinger.

  • Best ssd drive for MBP

    Hi
Was wanting to fit a fit a SSD drive to my 2012 MBP,Havent really any knowledge about SSD,was looking a fair sized drive and wanted the OS on it,do I have to buy a new OS to do this,I would not be carrying out this myself, could anybody please give me a rough estimate of what this would cost to do in £'s...
    Thank You

I would go for a Samsung 840 Pro Series as they are highly rated.   I suggest checking amazon.co.uk for pricing and gettng the biggest one you can budget (i.e. the 512GB drive).  The non-pro 840 series is also rated well but uses newer NAND technology and is slower writing data.  Not sure who would do this work in the UK for you.
If you do decide to do it yourself, installation is pretty easy on the mid-2012 MacBook Pro.  Just need a #00 philips and a T6 torx driver and the ability to be careful and follow directions closely.  Insturctions can be found here on ifixit's site.
Regarding the OS installation, I suggest getting a USB external enclosure for your old drive and using a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your existing OS onto the new drive which will retain everything as is and you'll be back up and running in no time.  Otherwise you'll need some sort of bootable installation media to boot from in order to format the new SSD and install Mac OS X.
    Good luck!
    Edit: added detail, corrected typo.

  • Ricoh c3501 printer driver for MBP OSX Mavericks10.9.5

Recently, I just bought 13 inch MBP. After tried to installed the c3501 printer driver I used have, but failed.
The New MBP can NOT print to c3501 as I did at MBA.
Please advise what I shall do to fix this?
    Thank you.

I am going to do some combining of posts here.  I hope I can remember to get all that needs to be answered.
I found the problem was at the "RicohUserCodes.command" executing order. I shall add printer first, then execute the script to change the user code.
As greg mentions, you need to add the printer before using the script.  The script only looks at installed printers for eligible printers that have Ricoh UserCodes.
Now, my NEW MBP with Mavericks 10.9.5 can print grayscale doc.
You should now have the ability to print grayscale or color documents.  The choice is under the Printer Features section in the print window.  Many organizations will allow most users to print grayscale without a User Code.  They require a User Code only for color printing.  Other organizations require a User Code for all printing.
After reading the comments, looks like there is a patch for GPL Ghostscript 8.63. As I execute the revision 8.7.1, can I apply the same patch to fix the double side printing issue? If yes, what is the procedure to apply the patch?
No, you do not need to apply a patch.  I think you can assume that it has been incorporated into Ghsostscript 8.71.  Most of the time, all patches are incorporated into the next release.
I found a problem on printing Win-Word document. If a word document file with section breaks, the printing job will be divided. This would affect double side printing. Any update driver to fix this issue? or ...
I think that is a Word document problem only.  Does duplex work in all other cases?
I think if you search other posts in the printing forums here, you will find similar complaints.  One idea for a work around that comes to mind is to save each section as a PDF and then combine the PDFs before printing.  I find that Word doesn't collate multiple copies of a document the way other applications do.
    greg sahli wrote:
Unfortunately, there is a bug that will affect two-side printing.
    Read the comments here:
    http://www.openprinting.org/driver/pxlcolor/
That page, like most of the OpenPrinting site, is ancient greg.  I am not sure much, if any of it, is still relavent.  How many years ago was Ghsoscript 8.63 and the CUPS PostScript driver that are mentioned on that page?  I would think that the CUPS PostScript driver has been improved since then.
In any event, I added a printer instance for the Ricoh c3105 and did a print to file selecting duplex.  The duplex was set using a PJL command.
    @PJL SET DUPLEX=ON

  • Recommended USB Hard Drive for MBP

I purchased a Lacie d2 external hard drive (250 GB) when i purchased my MBP. I had trouble understanding the "installation instructions" (this is my first mac). So i turned to the forum to assist, and in my travels discovered many people were not happy with the performance of the Lacie devices.
Is there an External Hard drive that works well with macs and is of good quality?

    15" MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Well, you just buy an enclosure that's to your liking / requirements (that is, USB 2.0, for a SATA drive), then buy a
Then you take your enclosure's manual, read how it's dissasembled (either screws, usually philips, or a simple latch of some sort - nothing complicated), open it up, put your hard drive inside (be sure to buy the right size, i.e. 2.5" if your enclosure is 2.5", 3.5" if your enclosure is 3.5"; and the right type - SATA in this case) and connect the cables (you CAN'T connect them wrong, shapes of the connectors makes it impossible) and close the whole thing up again.
That's it. It's no more complicated than putting a little box in a slightly bigger box and connecting two cables.
There's always a slight chance it will end up being incompatible in some way with your machine, but that happens with already assembled, brand name external drives as many posts on this forum can atest.

  • Hard Drive for MBP 15"

    Hello,
I am thinking to choose the otional 750Gb/7200rpm HD for a new 15" MBP. Does anybody can tell me in comparison to the standard 500Gb/5400rpm ...
    - noise
    - sensitivity / durability
    - power consuption
    - speed advantage of "normal" everyday work (Email, internet, iphoto, photoshop elements, office, a little video, parallels/WinXP)
... and, which HDs (brand, model) are built in (the 500 Gb and the 750 Gb)? I cannot find any specifications for the new MBP 15" late 2011.
    Thanks

Isn't there anybody out there, who can help me with my questions?

    Hello,

Hi Neuroanatomist (or any other Mac Friend), a little help ,-) please.
I just bought this 320 GB/5400 rpm Fujitsu drive for my MBP 15" 2.33.
The local TB Apple store gave me a period of 72 hours to replace the drive...I can´t wait so much time without working. So I must do the drive replacement myself. Is there a tutorial (text, pictures, video?) to help open the MBP, replace the drive and get my computer from Time machine?
Thanks very much for your help.

ps. I´ve 6 precision screwdrivers from 1.0 mm to 3,8 mm.

  • Difference between 5400 and 7200 hard drive

Looking at buying a new MBP - can't decide on the 750 G 5400 HD or the 500G 7200 HD. I like the extra space for photos on the 5400 HD but will the 7200 be a snapper unit ? I can always use an extra drive for storage - but is the speed benefit noticeable ?  I can't seem to find any recent reviews. They all seem a few years old. Plus - not sure whether the bigger drive will be just as snappy (more space) as the faster drive (possibly fulling up).
    Advice anyone ?
