5400rpm or 7200rpm for Macbook with leopard?

I am getting a good deal on Samsung's 250GB 5400rpm drive but I hear some people say 5400rpm is not good for leopard and is slow. But some folks also say 7200rpm gets hot on macbooks and is noisy.
So I am really confused and would like to know what other macbook users say about them. I would really appreciate your inputs. Thanks!

there are always good and bad points to everything, in this case they are quite even...
as the current macbooks ship with 5400rpm HDD's, this definitely isn't that slow, and if using your computer for every day use, the difference between 5400prm and 7200rpm will be almost indistinguishable, also the macbook air ships with a 4200rpm HDD apple obviously dont think this is too slow to be acceptable for normal use.
Of course a newer 5400 RPM drive is going to have a faster transfer rate than an older 5400 RPM drive due to higher "areal desity" (how much data is capable of being stored per unit area) with newer platters.
the good point for the 5400 HDD is that the battery can last longer, because the disk moves slower therefore consuming less power.
I heard maybe a .5 watt typical difference with the latest drives of both types. Might mean a few more minutes battery life, but about the power usage of a USB device like a mouse or flash drive. I think just dimming the display would make a bigger difference. In addition, new drives are generally more efficient and a new 7200 RPM drive might have about the same power consumption as an older 5400 RPM drive.
the bad point mainly made for the 7200 HDD is the battery life, which can be significantly reduced, but the good point is that leopard and other programs will run faster...
The way I saw it was that it wouldn't really matter with me since my MacBook mostly sits on the coffee table plugged into the power adapter.
so, its your choice, speed over battery...
unless you are going to be using a lot of high powered programs the 5400 rpm HDD should be more than adequate
Certainly nothing wrong with it. I just put in a 7200 RPM drive to see if I could.

  • MacBook with Leopard question...

    Hi Everyone,
I am considering buying a Macbook this week. The question is if I buy it right now will it come with Leopard and iLife08 pre-installed considering that Leopard launch is just round the corner or will I not be eligible for it. I cannot wait to buy it and must buy it this week.
If for some reason it does not have leopard installed then what do you suggest I do. I am in India where Apple support is very limited.
Thanks for your responses in advance.

Don't know the policy in India. In the US:
    http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/005700.html
If you've bought a Mac in the past two weeks--you're in luck. Apple says you're eligible to get a copy of Leopard for a $9.95 shipping and handling fee. Ditto if you buy a Mac system today. According to Brian Croll, senior director of Mac OS X product marketing, Apple will be pushed onto PCs as soon as possible. However, if for some reason your system doesn't have it preinstalled, you'll either get the Leopard DVD dropped into the box, or you'll be able to order it for the same shipping and handling fee as users who already bought their Mac this month.

  • MacBook with Leopard?

    Hi there!
Hi! waves I am new to this community and I am having trouble getting answers from customer support or the apple stores... therefore, I am hoping someone here can help me. I want to buy my daughter a new MacBook but I want it preinstalled and configured with the newest OS that will be released on Oct 26. Does anyone here know when those will be commercially available?
    TIA!
    ~sb

You would have to ask them why. I can think of a few reasons. Depends on how much stock is in house before the release at 6 PM Friday. Depends on how much they sell before the date. A lot of people are waiting for the release date so the on the shelf stock is sitting there not being sold. Customer support would have to know the stock of every store and retailer to come close to even guessing when it would be sold and the stock with Leopard would start being sold. The variables are endless. Your best bet would be to go into the store you plan on getting it from and talk to them The manager might be able to give you a better guesstimate.

  • Best SSD for MacBook with a twist...

    Hi all,
This is my first post in this forum, so hello.
I would like to get a SSD for my MacBook with a fairly decent amount of storage 60GB would be tight, 80GB would be fine, 120GB would be nice. I am not concerned about speed! As long as it's as fast as my 5400rpm stock HD, I really don't care.
What I do care about are these controller issues I've been hearing about. JMicron? I've been thinking about a OCZ Solid Series 120GB for $230, or an Intel X-25M 80GB for $290.
So my question is what is the best SSD to buy for size and stabilitiy, and not speed.

Go for Intel or Samsung if you can. Both players are also supplying many other brands. These 2 guys control the supply chain and the know-how.
So far, I'm happy with my kingspec in my MBA. Samsung in my Sony. Intel X25-M in my pc.

  • Got a refurbished macbook with leopard separate, can i use it on diff mac??

i purchased a refurbished macbook, and these come with leopard on 2 separate installing disk, can i use it to install it on my other mac that doesn't have leopard?

Leopard usually comes with a single DVD.
Are you sure that your disks are original and not copies?
Did the disks come with a license?
If your license is not for a Family Pack, then you are not allowed to install on more than one machine.
If the disks are original Apple, they probably won't install on any other machine anyway, they are usually machine-specific.

  • Can MacBook with Leopard OS do two-sided printing on the Epson NX515?

I am looking to buy an all in one printer, and the Epson NX515 seems best in a number of respects, especially the fact that its ink cartridges come in separate colors, which leads to much less waste of ink. But there is one item in the Epson documentation that concerns me ... the fact that two-sided printing may not be supported by Mac. Does anyone know if the Mac Book A1181 with Leopard OS does or does not support two-sided printing?
    Thank you.

    Hi @Blazer5,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you are wondering how to setup two-sided printing with your HP Envy 5532. I am happy to help!
To setup the duplex printing, I would recommend to go through this guide, Printing on Both Sides of the Paper (Duplex) for HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One and Deskjet Ink Advantage..., as it has instructions for both Windows and Mac. Also here are some guidelines for you to follow:
Understanding the following items can help you avoid possible problems when printing on both sides of the page.
Do not print on both sides of the following types of paper, or jams might occur:
    Transparencies
    Envelopes
    Photo paper
    Glossy paper
    Paper lighter than 60 g/m2 (16 lb).
    Paper heavier than 105 g/m2 (28 lb).
Several kinds of paper require a specific orientation when you print on both sides of a page. These include letterheads, preprinted paper, and paper with watermarks and pre-punched holes. The printer prints the first side of the paper first. Load the paper with top edge first and the print side down.
Also, this post, Vista / Win 7 Duplex Printing Troubleshooting Guide, by @Bob_Headrick. Might have some answers for you as well.
In the print dialog box (after selecting File, and Print), you will see a box next to two-sided printing, that can be checked or un-checked, in order to toggle in-between the two functions.
To change the print quality, you will want to go through this guide, HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One series and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 4510 e-All-in-One series - Print Docum....
For future reference, here is your printer's user guide.
    Hope this helps!

  • Travel adaptor for Macbook with magsafe connector?

Has anyone found anyone that sells a aircraft travel adaptor for the Macbook?
Kensington do one for the old iBook but a magsafe connector version has not appeared.
Hopefully this is not becasue Apple have patented the design of the magsafe connector and are not letting anyone else produce them.
If this is indeed the case, and Apple don't produce their own travel adapter, I will be quite cross as the whole point of having a laptop is so you can take it with you when you are travelling.
If the voltages for the iBook are the same as the Macbook how about producing an iBook to Magsafe adapter so we can use the 3rd party travel adapters?

I just checked and the prongs on my MB adapter are exactly the same as the ones on my iPod power adapter. They should work just fine.
From a manufacturing standpoint, it makes no sense to have two different products for the same exact job.

  • Is there an audio interface for Imac with Leopard???

    Hi Guys,
Im new here. Just got my IMac 24" 2.8ghz 10.5.1 Leopard last week. I love everything about it but Im having a real hard time finding an audio interface to use with Garageband. I tried the M-Audio Firewire Solo...found out quick it is not compatible. So I figure what the ** i'll downgrade and go with the M-Audio Mobilepre USB audio interface...usb, no fuss no muss right...WRONG! It doesnt work either! I tried downloading the most current driver from M-audio's website but still no go. I guess Leopard and intel machines are hard to please. Also the audio interface has to have phantom power to run a condensor mic. So my questions to you guys is this:
    1. Are there any other audio interface options out there with phantom power for $200 or less that will run with my Imac ?
    2. If not, why in the ** would Apple design a machine with Garageband then not set it up to accept any reasonably priced audio interface currently on the market? Tell me Im just uninformed...say it isnt so!
Sorry if it sounds like Im aggravated...I am! I had hoped to get some recording time in this weekend but its looking doubtful now.
I did post this in the Garageband discussion as well...thanks.
Any help with the mobile preamp, other interface recommendations, etc. are greatly appreciated!

Could you be a little more specific about what you mean
by "not compatible" -- is it a lack of Leopard drivers,
    or what?
I haven't fiddled with GarageBand, but I have been using
[M-Audio's Fast Track Pro|http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackPro-main.html] with audacity, and it seems to
work OK. (My beta-release ov audacity has some stability
    problems, but I don't think they're M-Audio-related.)
Did you check M-Audio's web site for Leopard-compatible
drivers? The one for Fast Track Pro wasn't released 'til
mid December, if I remember correctly.
Although firewire is probably technically superior, I
went with USB to avoid conflicts between the audio box
and my Firewire external HD. There have been too many
reports of flakey operation with iMac firewire drivers.
I like the Fast Track Pro, but I'm not sure it would
be my first choice if I had it to do over. It's main
drawback is that it's USB 1.1 -- so, there are some
tradeoffs in the number of simultaneous I/O channels
    versus data rate and resolution.
I've listed a few other USB options worth exploring
below -- I believe they all have phantom power:
    [E-Mu 0404 USB|http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=610&subcategory=611&produc t=15185]
    [Edirol UA-25|http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=704&ParentI d=114]
    [Line6 TonePort UX2|http://line6.com/toneportux2>
I'm not sure what the situation is WRT Leopard-compatible
drivers for any of the above -- you'll have to check the
    manufacturers' web sites.
Check amazon.com and MusiciansFriend.com for prices; also,
be sure to check the customer comments on MusiciansFriend.
They're often very thorough and informative -- typically
    much better than Amazon's.
    ...rock on!

  • How to upgrade Macbook with Leopard OS.

I have an older Mac Book. I upgraded my iphone 4s to ios6 but now my itunes isn't compatible because they've stopped making updates for my computer. My Macbook is running on Leopard. How can I upgrade my computer so I can get updates on my itunes.

You have to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to download iTunes 10.7. The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

  • Character palette no longer works for me with Leopard

I need to use the Character Palette frequently in my work, but since going to 10.5 it is not working. Only the bottom part appears, starting with the "View" drop-down menu, and under that the large character on the left and the "Related" scroll box next to it. Therefore, I can't select any other characters from the categories that should be at the top of the CP (or were in 10.4), and I'm stuck with whatever happens to appear in the large character box. How can I get the whole CP back?

For some unknown reason the international data caches can get corrupted and prevent character palette and keyboard viewer to appear in the input tab of the international preference pane. This also prevent from working the special characters item in the edit menu of many applications, including the Finder, Safari and Text Edit.
If this happened to you, go to System/Library/Caches folder and trash the following files (don't worry, they will be re-created when you restart your Mac):
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
As you are attempting to cancel files from System folder, you will be asked for an administrator ID and password.
If you don't have an administrator ID and password, ask the system manager in your office.
After you insert an administrator ID and password, the files will be trashed.
    Restart your Mac.
Open System Prefererences (in the apple menu, or inside the main Applications folder), open the International pane, and click the input menu. You will find again the character palette and keyboard viewer items with their chechboxes.
Click the two checkboxes. Be sure to click also at the bottom of the pane the checkbox labeled show the keyboard menu in the menu bar.
    Exit System Preferences.
In the right side of the menu bar you will find a menulet with your nation's flag. Click the flag and you will find both character palette and keyboard viewer.
Also, the special characters item in the edit menu of the applications that have this item will work as expected, and will open the characters palette.

  • ISight on MacBook with Leopard 10.5.1 does not work

I just installed Leopard on an iBook, G4 and iSight completely doesn't work.
I have an external iSight. I tried a new 1.3 iSight download but it didn't work with an iBook.
    Does Apple know about this?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Thomas Steffens
You can use the suggestions in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional to check out your external iSight.
If your problem persists after that, and if you have not already used the 10.5.1 download updater, repair permissions, download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update, repair permissions again after the restart that completes the update, and try iSight again.
You can assure that Apple knows about your problem by submitting Mac OS X Feedback or contacting Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider about your problem.

  • External Burner for macbook with combo drive and IDVD 6

    Hey everybody
I have been thinking of finally utilizing apples IDVD but as mentioned I have a combo drive
    so my questions are these
    1. What are some suggested external dvd burners for mac
    2. What is the process of setting up my mac os 10.4(with latest update) for an external burner

    Hi h
    1. LaCie seems to be most recommended in this forum. I got a ForMac one
(old but good when copying home brewed DVDs)
    2. Set-up ? Should work. Only thing that might be problematic is that using
iDVD is a hard disk space needing/consuming activity.
My goal is to at least free up 25Gb on the internal hard disk (iDVD uses only this)
after I've prepared the DVD in iDVD.
No USB/USB2 external hard disk drives - if needed use FireWire one.
