5400rpm sufficient for Thunderbolt drives used with FCP?

I've long understood that hard drives used for video work should run at 7200rpm.  Many of the portable Thunderbolt drives currently available seem to run at 5400rpm.  Does the increased speed of the Thunderbolt interface obviate the need for the faster performance of a 7200rpm drive?  (I would guess not, but would appreciate comments.)

No. Disk performance can not be increased with a fast bus connection to the computer. If the disk is slow, it will still be just as slow with a faster bus.

  • External Hard Drive for PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio

    Hello,
I'd greatly appreciate any recommendation for an external hard drive for a PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio.
    Thanks.

We see alot of Lacie issues here and elsewhere.
Drives fail... period. I believe you hear more about Lacie drives failing because they sell a ton more of them than many other suppliers. I've got 8 of em sitting right here on the desk and two more at the second station. I've lost one since I started using them years ago (and it had problems right out of the box) and I use them pretty heavy.
I understand that they use several different brands of drives in their enclosures, but from my experience they must have pretty good QC standards for what they package.
The guy said the G Techs were a little overkill for his needs. Lacie doesn't pay me. But if someone asks "how are Lacies?" I'll tell them they've been great for me and many others I know, especially if your requirements are capturing DV.
In five years, I ain't heard anybody say anything about it.
As for FCP. I love it! In 20 years of business, it's probably the purchase that's given me the most bang for my buck. But if you haven't heard people knock it, you've never met an Avid zelot, bruhhhhh, just the thought gives me shivers.
The drives X mentioned are designed for video work.
What Studio said, well he gives out some of the best advice on this board
(and maybe the most! ) and my reply to his post... that's why I used the little smiley face. No offence intended X.
I only meant to say that, in a world where software like FCP can do what it does at the price it does it, and drives like Lacie and G Tech can give you the storage they do for the price they do, the line between consumer and professional products is easily blurred.

I bought an external hard drive for backups to use with Time Machine, but however when I try to connect it with the other windows laptop it doesn't work ? intact it doesn't work on any other device except my MAC ?

    Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs

  • 'Missing select' error for update statement using WITH clause

    Hi,
I am getting the below error for update statement using WITH clause
SQL Error: ORA-00928: missing SELECT keyword
      UPDATE A
      set A.col1 = 'val1'
         where
      A.col2 IN (
      WITH D AS
      SELECT col2 FROM
      (SELECT col2, MIN(datecol) col3 FROM DS
      WHERE <conditions>
        GROUP BY PATIENT) D2
      WHERE
      <conditions on A.col4 and D2.col3>

    Hi,
The format of a query using WITH is:
    WITH  d  AS
        SELECT  ...  -- sub_query
    SELECT  ...   -- main query
You don't have a main query.  The keyword FROM has to come immediately after the right ')' that ends the last WITH clause sub-query.
That explains the problem based on what you posted.  I can't tell if the real problem is in the conditions that you didn't post.
I hope this answers your question.
If not, post a complete test script that people can run to re-create the problem and test their ideas.  Include a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) for all the tables involved, and the results you want from that data.
In the case of a DML operation (such as UPDATE) the sample data should show what the tables are like before the DML, and the results will be the contents of the changed table(s) after the DML.
Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
Always say what version of Oracle you're using (e.g. 11.2.0.2.0).

  • Best Macbook Pro for use with FCP X for the money?

I am on a budget, but don't want to be frustrated with FCP X being slow or crashing. What Macbook pro configuration would you recommend? I'm currently considering 4 15" configurations that are below, but am open to any suggestions. I figure I can always get an external drive to upgrade the RAM, so I'm keeping that low to save. What processors, HD and video cards does everyone recommend? Thank you!

    Don't skimp on memory.
I personally use OWC for almost all of my Mac upgrades, especially memory and SSDs.
I'd highly recomend getting 16GB. You only have two slots, so it's not like you can add memory, you have to replace memory. I've seen many users post issues with FCP X who simply don't have enough memory.

  • Looking to buy a regular definition hard drive camcorder to use with FCP 2

Hey all, thanks for clicking my posting. Here's the deal, I am in the market for a hard drive camcorder for use with Final Cut Pro. Will be recording sports and sports-related material (but obviously want to use it for other things as well down the road). I am using an older 1.6 Ghz tower from about 5 years ago, but am using the latest OS 10.5.7. Am looking to spend about $500, but can go up a bit if needed. Since I am using an older Mac I know that I cannot use a high def cam with it, and and this point it's not needed for what I am doing.
Was looking at the Panasonic, Sony and JVC Everio lines. I had made up my mind to grab the JVC since it has the best reviews of any of the mid priced cams out there, but was sharply warned by my Apple teacher (and 2 others there at the time) not to buy it since the .mod file format doesn't play nice with Final Cut Pro. I was going to Streamclip it into .dv but was told that I will lose quality and quite possibly audio sync. After a bit of checking around the web I found that there is an analog output of the Everio camera that I could put into my Canopus ADVC - 55 and then capture it with Final Cut Pro (the only question I have is, should I go from digital, through an analog output, only to capture it with a digital format again? Seems to me I should not go digital-analog-digital).
So let's get to the question here then, can somebody more knowledgeable than myself tell me which cameras to look at to do the job? I guess my backup cam would be the Sony SR-47, decent reviews but not as good as the Everio. Also, are there any cameras in that price range that will simply let me pull the footage right into the bin of Final Cut Pro, or do they all have to be converted from MPEG 2 into .dv (or whatever file format I want them in). I know this is a lot of questions, but I am sure there's some cameras that I might be missing, so anybody care to help me out? Thanks in advance!
    Tom

As far as I know, that is the only list of compatible drives with the router.  So, yes, that is the list I am referring to when I said "compatible drive list".   There are very few 2TB or 3TB drives on the list.  I would really like to be able to use a 3TB drive with a couple partitions, and that seems almost impossible with very few options.  I have been reading around the last couple days and I hear lots of reports of people successfully using drives that are not on the tested compatible list.  I just wanted to know more options from people like that.

  • Buying used G4s for use with FCP

How well does FCP take advantage of dual-processor capabilities? I'm debating getting a G4 dual 533 vs. a G4 1.0 GHz machine. Which would work faster? Or are they both too painfully slow to even be worth it?
Thanks for helping the new guy!

My G4/400 is now 5 years old (I upgraded the processor last year to 1.5 Ghz). It works extremely well with FCP 5.0.4 with my particular setup - certainly very very usable and not at all painfully slow. But I'm not editing Hollywood blockbusters.
The only limitation is that I can't install Motion, but I knew that before I bought FCStudio.
Don't know anything about comparable performance of old dual-processor G4's.

  • Recommendations for Semi-Pro or Pro HD Video camera to use with fcp and Mac

Recommendations for Semi-Pro or Pro HD Video camera to use with fcpX and Mac with auto settings and ability to override, need to add external mic or 2.  Am one person crew so needs to be easy to use.

And check out the Panasonic AG-AC90.  Very good specs for a prosumer unit. Everything in the semi-pro area will involve trade offs for sure. Key thing is to study up enough to know what your needs are vs what trade off are involved in the various models. The ag-ac90 trade off (one of them) is diffraction limited sharpness.

  • Partitioning a MyBook to use with fcp... can it be Mac Extended and FAT32?

Hi, I'm a film student and a little while ago I just bought a MyBook 1T external hard drive (USB only).
I'm looking into reformatting my hard drive because when capturing with fcp (straight to the hard drive) I keep getting an error at around 9 minutes.
I did some research and found out that its because its formatted to FAT32 instead of Mac Extended.
However, I do a lot of work with PC's and transferring files on my hard drive and I read that once formatted to Mac Extended my hard drive would not work on a PC.
I was wondering if I partitioned my MyBook would I be able to make one part Mac Extended (for my capture scratch files) and one part FAT32 (that I could use like a regular hard drive for files between Mac and PC)?
Also just to be clear once the hard drive is Mac Extended I can still keep other files besides capture scratch files in that portion of the hard drive, it's just I can't transfer those particular files to PC. (Some of the website forums I read made me more confused haha)
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Kyle

@ nick would that let me capture my footage to my hard drive without having to babysit
NTFS does not have the file size limit silliness that FAT has so you should be OK in theory.
Run a couple of test captures and see what you think.
USB is generally not a good interface for video as it delivers data in bursts. You need a constant stream as provided by FireWire or SATA drives. If you are working with low bandwidth video codecs such as DV, you might get away with it for a while.

  • Which camera to use with FCP

Im new to HD cams but very familiar with FCP. Im looking into purchasing either the Sony V1U or the Panasonic HVX 200. Most of my shooting is done overseas on 2 week long shoots. What im trying to figure out is what you guys have found best for hard disk recording when using FCP or if there are any differences?
This forum has helped me alot in the past. Thanks for all the help guys

Panasonic is now selling Focus FireStore drives that record the P2 format to disk instead of expensive flash memory. The Focus drives used to be a nightmare in post, but with the P2 metadata and FCP6 doing Log & Transfer the clips no longer come in as FAT32 fragments just a few minutes long (they are stitched together at ingest). Get a FS-100-160 or two and bring a MacBook along with FCP6 to ingest to common FireWire drives each day to free up the FireStores. If you figured on spending a few grand on P2 cards you can get a lot more GB for your dollars with the FireStore drives.

  • Maximum Partition Size for External Drive using DU

    Hello,
I just purchased a 750g Maxtor USB drive for use with Time Machine. When I went into DU to partition and format the drive I was surprised to find that every time I went to create a single partition using all available space, the operation would error out. I was however able to create two partitions with the largest one sized around 650g or so. I was using the Mac file system.
This just seems odd to me. Does OS X have a maximum allowable partition size that prevents me from creating one large partition?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi Robert
You should be able to delete the partition, try again using the instruction in the following article:

  • Seeking a DVR Recommendation that I can use with FCP 5!!

I am looking to purchase a DVR, not a Tivo!! I was looking for someone who is currently using a DVR, that has Firewire out, that they are using in FCP to edit content to send to DVD. I am open to any any all suggestions!!
As always thanks in advance for your the courtesy of your to read and reply to my Post,
    Sebastian

Motion 2.0 was paired with FCP 5. Final Cut Studio 1 included both. When Apple switched to Intel processors, they released FCP 5.1 and Motion 2.1 as an Intel compatible "cross grade". FCS2 had FCP 6 and Motion 3. FCS3 is Motion 4 and FCP 7.

  • Service item not relevant for pricing if used with higher level item catego

    Hi,
We have a service item e.g S900 with Item category ZTAD.
This line Item automatically creates a Service Order.
Requirement is , if this service item is used with an Equipement Item,
    Item 10 --> Equipment
    Item 20 --> Service
--> There would be price required for the Equipment ( Condition type ZPRO - Mandatory )
--> System should not ask for the price of Service Item, as it would be inclusive in the Equipmetn charges.
--> In short if the Service item is used as Sub item with Equipment, it is not relevan for pricing.
I tried copying ZTAD and creating a new item cateogry which is not relevant for pricing...would that be the correct approach, but facing several issues related to Automatic Service order generation.
what could be possible ways to achieve above.
    Regards
    Trupti Deulkar

    Hi,
System will ask the price for  item category TAD bcoz service also chargble,in your case insted of TAD use TANN as free,
You can define based on your higher level item category  for Ex : OR + Normusage(Blank)Higherlevl item (Blank)= TAN
you can config like this  ORNormUsge(Blank)  + TAN = TANN
like this you can do it this correct way or els you can manually enter the item catagory (TANN) at sale order line item level.
    Thanks
    Vinayak.
