54G randomly bumps wireless computers off the network.

My wireless 54G router keeps randomly bumping users off the network. The only way to gain access back to the network is to power off/on the router and then computers can reconnect and have perfect inernet access. The "randomness" of the resets is between 10 and 20 minutes.
I'm using WPA Personal ASC(?) security if that helps in diagnosing the problem.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance.
Jenkin

It sounds like you are running WPA with AES.
"WPA with AES" = WPA2
In order to run WPA2 you should note the following:
1) make sure you have the latest drivers for your wireless adapters.
2) Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Also, are you using any fixed LAN IP addresses on your system?  If so, they should be outside your DHCP server range.  Otherwise it could cause the random disconnects that you mentioned.

  • How do I speed up this query by ignoring computers off the network faster?

    Good afternoon,
I am running the below script to query the entire domain for local admins. Could anyone reccomend a way to speed this up by more quickly skipping computers that aren't on the network? Currently, every time it reaches a computer that is not on the network
it hangs for up to 20 seconds (computers on the network return the data in less than a second). If I could decrease the ping time-out time, I could speed up this query tenfold.
Script pasted below - Thank you!!!
    $Searcher = New-Object DirectoryServices.DirectorySearcher([ADSI]"")
    $Searcher.Filter = "(objectClass=computer)"
    $Computers = ($Searcher.Findall())

    $Path=$Computer.Path

    $members | foreach {$_.GetType().InvokeMember("Name", 'GetProperty',
    $null, $_, $null) | out-file -append C:\Reports\IBX_Local_Admins_ALL\$name.txt

This version will not fail no matter what is in the group.

    Hi JRV,
Thank you for your help so far! When I ran the above version, it seemed to be going fine but it stopped at a certain point saying the script was "successful", but it only queried 148 computers. I should note that it is also the same 148 computers each time
I run it. No errors, it just stops and says successful. Any ideas?

  • Changed wireless providers, now Wireless Printer is off the network

I recently switched wirless providers and the printer dropped off the network. I don't see a way through the printer itself to establish a new connection, and I can't connect it to my mackbook air through a USB and have any luck either. I reinstalled the disc and as soon as I select the option for a wireless printer in the setup, an "unexpected error" quits the process and I'm back to square one. How do I get the printer back on my new network? Thanks!

I appreciate the reply and understand needing every bit of information possible to increase the likelihood of a detailed answer. Going through everything I need to provide, however, will take me some time to find all the answers.
Is there just a short and simple way to reconnect a wireless printer to a new network? If it doesn't work, I understand it was a simple attempt and I'll get all the additional information like the kind of network, etc., but don't know all of that right now. It would seem reasonable that HP had a way to reconnect a wireless printer if you got a new network (or switched providers, etc.).
    Thanks in advance!

  • IMac always falling off the network

I have my iMac always on, serving up our big ITunes library to our wireless network around the house. It seems to fall off the network fairly regularly, every few days or so. I have the newer Airport extreme and several Airport expresses (not the latest ones) connected to stereos in different rooms of the houses.
But this has always happened, for a year or so. Anyone know what it might be? thanks!

I have exactly the same problem and called tech support (not helpful at all, they need to work on their listening skills) and have no idea what is going on. I have found a temporary solution and that is to reset the basestation and not use any security or hardware access and it seems to work fine for a long time with no problems. my problem (not sure if this is the same problem as you but...) whenever I put any kind os security or hardware acccess on the network my mac either can seem to find the thing or does and randomly cuts out. I of course check my signal strength and it always says it is full.
    any help please

  • Connecting to other computers on the network

I just replaced an older Belkin wireless router with the new Airport extreme. I like it very much but I cannot now figure out how to connect to other computers on the network. With the old router I just clicked on network in the finder window and all the other computers on the network showed up an dI could click on one to connect. Now I see notheng. Any ideas????

I'm getting the same problem. I used to have the snow AEBS, but about 2 weeks ago I got the new one. Never had a problem connecting to my other macs in the house through network in the finder... now, no other machines show up.
Because there's no communication or recognition of devices through AEBS, wireless printing goes out the door too. My printer is plugged in by ethernet to my house network. If I am connected by ethernet to my network, I can print, but if it's wireless, nope.
Today, I got the apple tv. I was super excited unboxing it, hooking it up... and then when I go to sync up through itunes... oh wait, it doesn't show up in the devices list because of my AEBS problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I would love to play around with apple tv so please help... thanks.

  • InDesign becomes unresponsive when editing text off the network. Techs are flummoxed!

Recently my InDesign (CS6 running on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, 8gb ram) has become almost totally unresponsive when I go to open and edit a file off the company network. Our techs have no idea what is going on and are considering having to re-build my profile as a last resort as we have tried everything else.
A bit more of a descriptoin of the problem: When I go to edit an InDesign file off the server it first takes longer than normal to load but eventually does. You can scroll up and down the pages, move and resize boxes, place new pictures but as soon as you try to do anything text based (edit new text or make a new text box) the whole program freezes to the point you have to task manager out and kill it. It is not a corupt file because if I copy the file directory with all links over on to my computers local hard disk the file works totally fine it is only when editing over the network and when edouble clicking to edit text.
What we have done to try and fix the problem:
    Reinstal InDesign - No effect
Cleared the preferences (shift + ctrl + alt + windows key on InDesign startup) - No effect
Our techs have tried editing my profile registry to no avail and we are all compleatly at a loss to what is going on. There are several other instances of the program across the company (mainly versions 5.5 and one other 6) and they all work fine editing files straight off the network.
Anyone have any idea what it could be, such a specific problem being only when it is editing text based areas? The techs dont want to have to re-build my profile as it is a lot of back end work to do to be able to re-instate it straight away.
Many thanks in advance for any insights into the issue

So we have finally fixed the issue and are currently cracking out the bubbly!
It turned out to be the network path shotcut I was using to access the shared drive where I was editing the files from. I work for a restaurant so we have a shared drive where each site can access their files, this is where the food menu files reside and I had created a shortcut that, although accessed the correct area did it using a path which had a double backslash in it.
The true path for the shared drive is  \\hm\mydocs\restaurant\menufile.indd and this is the shortcut I was using to open the file up from. For all other files like Word, Excel, even other Adobe programs like PSE10, and Lightroom it seems to work fine. For some reason InDesign does not like this path with the double backslash in. As soon as I changed the shortcut path to just m:\ (the letter of the shared drive on the network) everything was working again and we can all sleep, it was driving us mental. Re-installed windows, InDesign created a new network user profile the works.
I hope this may help someone else in a similar situation in the future

  • Officejet 4620 drops off the network after the first operation

HP 4620 drops off the network soon after one operation is performed. I have to turn it off and on again to bring it on line and then it repeats. The message is " unable to communicate with printer".  I have run all the diognostics and they say your printer is operating normally.  I have down loaded the latest drivers. Running Win 7 (64 bit). My only clue is that I have a new router, Netgear.

    Hi LennieZup
I understand you can print over the network one time and then you have to turn the printer off and on again to continue to print.
I will be happy to assist you with this.
It may not be the printer, it may be your router's inability to wake the printer.
Disconnect the power cable on the router for 10 seconds, then reconnect the power cable again. You might need to check to see how many devices can be setup on the router at the same time. Depending on each router.
I would recommend updating the printers firmware. HP Officejet Firmware.
I have included a document for Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. Try Step six: Assign your HP product a static IP address.

  • AirDisk Falling off the network once a day

My AirDisk fall off the network about once a day, not available to any computers, Mac or PC. Restarting the Airport Base Station brings it back up, but that's no solution.
It's a Cavalry 500 GB USB 2 drive (SATA USB bridge on the inside)

I had this, it happened to me about 3 or 4 times a week. I had it attached to an extreme which was running a WDS network. I decided just to live with it since I only needed the drive once a week or so.
For other reasons I recently changed the extreme to a single station network and did the same with the other extreme, since then my airdisk has not dropped out.
I'm not sure whether it was due to the WDS network or more likely that something wasn't configured just right.

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • Trying to configure Portal to run off the network

    Hi all,
I am trying to configure Oracle Portal 3.0.9.8.2 to run off the network. I have taken all of the recommended steps in terms of configuring hostname, using a static IP, running and checking the ssoodatan script, updating the hosts file, and configuring a loopback adapter, but can still not make it work. The Portal works and functions fine when connected to the network, but as soon as disconnected from the network Portal returns
Error: Timeout occurred whilst retrieving page meta data 0 ms.
    or
Sometimes it will display the banner, but the Portlets and the Providers will instantly timeout. I have cranked up the timeout levels of JServ and the Providers but to no avail. I have put the recommended timeout, stall, requesttime, buffer, minStall, minTimeout in the zone.properties file, but no luck.
I have noticed within the jserv.log the error message below. The link that jumps out at me is UnknownHostException: www-proxy.us.oracle.com. I did have my proxy server set at one time, but I erased it from the global settings page, and I ran the procedure I found somewhere on this discussion board to make sure it was set back to null. When I run the diag.cmd program it shows my proxy server being empty. Where could this be picking this up from, I also have proxy servers turned off in my browsers. Any suggestions or help??

I think you must add an entry to your /etc/hosts file, as follows:
    127.0.0.1 noa noa
and create a vhost entry on /etc/httpd/conf/extra/httpd-vhosts
    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName noa
    DocumentRoot "/srv/http/"
    <Directory "/src/http/">
    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride None
    Require all granted
    </Directory>
    </VirtualHost>
Although I'm not sure if the vhost is actually necesary, but it won't harm.
pd: if you use vhosts, remember to uncomment "Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf" con /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and restart apache
    # systemctl restart httpd

I cannot see my itunes library on the main menu under computers despite the network being active and the home sharing on on both the devices the mac and apple tv. Any ideas?

    Hi Monty,
Sorry to say it, but this is normal for Apple TVs. I've owned a TV2 and a TV3, and neither lasted for an entire year. They are quite fragile and of low quality, and as you can see here, quite fussy even when they work. The wi-fi receiver on these are cheap and unreliable.
Consider the $99 an annual rental fee. They rarely work for a whole year, so if you are going to use the platform, you will have to replace them constantly.
Also, when one dies under warranty, never, never send it to Apple for repair. Go to the Apple Store for replacement. I sent my ATV3 in for warranty repair using a box sent to me by Apple, and although FedEx tracking showed it was accepted by Apple, it was never seen again. Apple won't replace it or even return my calls.

  • Enabling ALL VLANs on a trunk link causes downstream hosts to intermittently fall off the network

In an effort to begin collapsing switches, I began to configure our two 3750g Core switches to Allow all VLANs to trunk to a downstream 6500.
The cores are HSRP-configured and are the root bridge priorities are set to match the HSRP active router correctly.
The trunk link that currently existed between the 3750 and the 6500 allowed only about 8 vlans, and the other day I removed the restriction to allow ALL VLANs 1-4096.
Then the next day, people started noticing servers not accessible and I investigated and noticed that they were intermittently failing ping replies. These servers were DOWNSTREAM from the 6500 two switches deep using trunk links as well.
One troubleshooting step I did was I pinged one of the HSRP IPs for the subnet the inaccessible server was on, got a reply from the gateway, and then I pinged the server again, and it replied!
Another behavior I noticed was that I was starting to have trouble telneting in to the the two switches downstream from the 6500. Sometimes I could telnet to one of them, other times I couldn't. These downstream switches are the ones that had the server ports for the servers that were intermittnetly dropping off the network. So at a time when I could session into one of these downstream switches I could ping the servers from there. THen their MACs would show up in the table and then I could ping them from anywhere. I would wait for five minutes for the MACs to age out and then low-and-behold the servers were no longer accessible from the user locations until pinged them from the switches they were on.
So, I gave up trying to fix, rolled back my trunk link betwen the 3750 and the 6500 to the few VLANs allowed as before, and then everything was happy again. I could ping all the servers, I could session in to all the downstream switches from the 6500.
    Network topology: [3750-core]---TrunkLinkAllowedAll---[6500chassis]---trunklink---[3750-3-switchStack]----trunklink---[3750]
Any insights would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks!

    Thanks nkarthikeyan.
VTP transparent mode and pvst+ was definitely in place. I went ahead and did exactly what you said; the only thing that was different from what you said to do was the way I had allowing ALL VLANs on the trunk from Core to the 6500. I allowed only the needed VLANs on that trunk and all seems to be fine.
I still want to know why setting the trunk to allow 1-4094 would cause hosts to fall off the network and switch flooding to not work right. I did read some articles on the effects asymmetric routing can have on unicast flooding and perhaps that's the issue, since my core 3750 is configured with another core switch in an HSRP pair.

  • Authenticating off the network?!?!?!

I have a couple users that for some reason when they disconnect from the network they are unable authenticate on their local machines. While on the network they authenticate through open directory just fine. What am I missing? What can I look at? I also have MANY other OD users that are able to log on while off the network just fine so I don't think it's a server issue (but I'm not ruling it out)???

I think I may have misunderstood your original question. Can you explain exactly how the accounts are set up, and where the home dirs are?
PHD's are portable home directories. Users have OD accounts, and their home dirs are stored on a server and the local HD. The home dirs are synced when they connect to the network (you specify when exactly). You get the reliability of having most of the user's files on the server, and the portablilty og having the user being able to access their files when they're not on the network. I've not used PHD's myself, so I can't advise you on more than what they are.

  • My G5 can't locate other computers on the network

It's weird it can find the internet and networked printers but NO other computers at all. Furthermore other computers on the network have no problem finding each other or this specific computer.
    Any ideas?
There are both macs, windows, and a linux based NAS on this network.

It most certainly does explain why one wouldn't be able to see others, if it's not configured as part of a workgroup or the automounter isn't running, this single machine will not be able to mount on demand, those shares which are advertised on other hosts.
Macs are not complicated and as I see by your signon, you know something of a root account. I would think you'd feel right at home on a mac under it's covers I myself have been a real Unix sysadmin for 18 years and played on all types of enterprise hardware, believe me, Macs are easy to fiddle with. Most of the time, when someone can't see other machines using the network browser,it's because some tool disabled NFS. Check your /etc/hostconfig for the automounter line and also check in the /Library/StartupItems and make sure NFS gets hit when the box starts.
I know if I kill my automounter, all the network mounting stops.
