5505 stuck in VTP transparent

I have a 5505 that refuses to change VTP mode to anything other than transparent. It acts as though it has taken the change, but when you show vtp domain, it shows it as back in transparent mode. The VTP server is a 2924, and there is another 5505 in the network as a client(Which occasionaly slips back to transparent, but takes the change back to client). The only difference between the two 5505s is a slightly older COS on the one that is stuck in transparent ( 6.3(5) vs. 6.4(17) ). Due to the fact that the switch is in heavy usage and they take a while to bring back up, I can't randomly play with it unless I'm fairly sure I've found a solution. There are around 150 VLANs in the database. The server is running VTP V1(as is the 5505 in question). The 5505 does not show any other signs of failure, it's been rock solid otherwise. It's just getting to be a pain having to enter VLAN changes in on 2 switches instead of one. The domain name is the same. I can't find anything in the Cisco release notes that ever shows this as a known problem.

The vtp server should not be the 2924 which may be your problem . These will only support like 64 spanning tree instances so anything above that means spanning tree is not working for those vlans . The 2924 should be a client and you should manually prune the connecting links of vlans that are not needed on the 2924 . Always use the more powerful box as the server . Make the 5500 the server . Below is some info from a cisco webpage.
upported STP Instances
You create an STP instance when you assign an interface to a VLAN. The STP instance is removed when the last interface is moved to another VLAN. You can configure switch and port parameters before an STP instance is created. These parameters are applied when the STP instance is created. You can change all VLANs on a switch by using the stp-list parameter when you enter STP commands through the CLI. For more information, refer to the Catalyst 2900 Series XL and Catalyst 3500 Series XL Command Reference.
The Catalyst 2912 XL, Catalyst 2924 XL, and Catalyst 2924C XL support only 64 STP instances and 64 VLANs. All other Catalyst 2900 XL switches and all Catalyst 3500 XL switches support 64 STP instances and 250 VLANs.
Each VLAN is a separate STP instance. If you have already used up all available STP instances on a switch, adding another VLAN anywhere in the VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) domain creates a VLAN that is not running STP on that switch. For example, if 250 VLANs are defined in the VTP domain, you can enable STP on 64 of those VLANs. The remaining VLANs must operate with STP disabled.
You can disable STP on one of the VLANs where it is running, and then enable it on the VLAN where you want it to run. Use the no spanning-tree vlan vlan-id global configuration command to disable STP on a specific VLAN, and use the spanning-tree vlan vlan-id global configuration command to enable STP on the desired VLAN.
For more information about VLANs, see "Configuring VLANs."

    Mac OS 10.7.4
A "ghost" frame from an old movie is stuck in the transparent / checkerboard background.  Always the same movie / frame.   Even in a new comp without any layers this old quicktime movie shows up.  Was a moving movie, this ghost effect is now just a single still frame.   Put one item in the comp and it disappears.  Turn off the eyeball for all of the layers and the ghost image comes back.
Does not show up in final renders .. yet.   Mostly in just (Auto / Half) rez comp viewer previews.
I've tried deleting prefs.    Cleared disk cache.    Cleared Conformed Media Cache.  Restarted the program.    Restarted the computer.      It's been like this for weeks.
Now it has started showing WITH other layers "on".  This is new.   Makes it tough to work.
IT department says they have no idea, that "we'll have to wipe your entire computer" but before going THAT route wanted to see if anyone else has ever had this problem and if they've discovered a solution.
    Thanks,

In these examples below this "rooftop scene" not only isn't supposed to be in the image, it's not even in the AE project file.
Here it is actually with other layers set to "on" which has never happened before:

    Hello People out there!
I am facing the same issue
Since a few days I have a very annoying ghost issue in After Effects. (cc 12.2.1.5)
I really have no clue what the problem is and how I should solve it.
Sometimes, when I set the opacity of a layer to 0% I can still see it. It is like a ghost. Even if I turn the little eye off or delete it, the Footage/Ghost won't go away.
I also tried to Empty the cache (while disabling refresh) and cleaned the database and everything, but the problem is still there.
(Also when I restart After Effects or my whole computer)
Sometimes it even shows me, that my ghost is part of another footage (while soloing layers), but I already checked that footage while revealing it in composition and checking the footage in the explorer. I also tried to safe it to a different filetype and relink it, but it was still not working.
Here a a few pictures of my problem below:

Sometimes, when I scrup with the slider through the composition it appears and disappears and when I loose my click, it is sometimes there and sometimes not.
It is even in my rendering, which is really bad because, because the video is due tomorrow :S...

  • Why my VTP client switch changes automatically to vtp transparent?

    hi ppl!
i got a severe problem in my network. currently, we are implementing cisco 5509 catos based layer switch as our vtp mode server. so when i tried to hook up a new cisco 2950 switch by configuring it as vtp client with the same vtp domain name with dat of cisco 5509 vtp server mode, it will automatically change to vtp transparent mode but with the same vtp domain name. so, is there anyone dat can give me the best solution to mitigate my problem. e-mail me via [email protected]

  • VTP Transparent Mode in 2924XL/3524XL

I have a 2924XL ver12.0(5)WC11 connected to two 3550 ver12.1(22)EA5 via 802.1Q trunks. They are all in the same VTP domain. The 2924XL is in VTP Client mode & the two 3550s are in VTP Server mode. There are only 6 vlans - 1, 223, 1002, 1003, 1004, & 1005. I am attempting to change all switches to VTP Transparent mode.
Starting w/the 2924XL, when I change mode from VPT Client mode to VTP Transparent mode, the interfaces w/the trunk links immediately bounce & when they come back up, communication is only established thru VLAN1 & am no longer to communicate to devices in VLAN223.
Connection was restored when I reconfigured the 2924XL back to VTP Client mode.
What is causing this problem & what is the proper way to convert to Transparent mode w/o interruption of service?
    Thanks!

    Humm ...
well, please help me to understand the problem.
The VTP Client saves the vlan infos in RAM, and not in NVRAM like VTP Server ... when you change the VTP mode Client to Transparent, why you lose you vlan infos?
If you do a "sh vlan" on one of your switches that is in client mode, then change it to be in transparent mode, none of them would disappear.
It will simply stop listening to vtp messages regarding the creation and deletion of vlans.
Then, of course, you have to create the vlan database in NVRAM ...
    Thanks for your support

  • VTP transparent mode and using VTP domain

                       Hi all,
Need to ask question when  using VTP transparent mode is it good idea to use VTP domain name and password?
I know for switches in transparent mode they act as independent of each other.
So need to know why we should use vtp domain  and password with transparent mode?
    thanks
    mahesh

    Mahesh,
I know this 2 years later, but it will help others who will come across this. If you have a Transparent switch mixed with Server and Clients switches. This is your concern....... If you do not put the Transparent switch in the same domain, then it will not forward VLAN changes to other swithces.
    So Sw1(Server-CCIE Domain) <-------> Sw2(Transparent-CCIE Domain)  <-------> Sw3(Client-CCIE Domain)
The above will work because the Transparent switch is in the same domain. This means that SW3 will get any Vlan changes that are done on SW1.
Now lets look at it the other way.........
    Sw1(Server-CCIE Domain) <-------> Sw2(Transparent-Null Domain)  <-------> Sw3(Client-CCIE Domain)
Two things are going to happen here
    1) The transparent switch is not on same domain, so SW3 will never get any updates when changes to Vlans are done on SW1. So if I add one vlan to SW1, and that make the Configuration Revision increase to the value of 10, that means SW3's Revision will still be 9, and will remain that way until the issue is corrected.
    2) If you are dynamically negotiating trunks, this will never happen due to the mismatch domains. Meaning that your trunks will never come up because you did not put your Transparent switch in the same domain.

  • Move a switch from VTP client mode to VTP transparent mode

    Hi,
Does anybody have an experience / knowledge if I move a switch from VTP client mode to VTP transparent mode, should I re-create all the VLANs on this switch?
    Thank you!

    Hi there,
The VTP and the VLANs are seperate beasts.
The switch has a vlan database which is held in a seperate file to the config. If you type "sh flash" you'll see it in there.
VTP passes around the VLAN information and the switch stores it in the vlan database. If you remove the switch from the VTP domain, then VTP will not be able to update this file and it will remain exactly as it was.
In short - if you've got 20 vlans, when you go to VTP transparent, you'll still have 20 vlans

  • Best Practise for VTP Transparent?

When I configure Cisco switches unless there is a specific reason to use VTP (legacy network) I would normally configure VTP Transparent (or if its a recent CatOS switch disable VTP). I understand Server, Client & Transparent concepts but was wondering about the VTP Domain Name when using Transparent mode.
I would normally configure VTP Transparent before anything else on the switch but don't configure a VTP Domain Name:
    cat-2950#sho vtp status
    VTP Version : 2
    Configuration Revision : 0
Maximum VLANs supported locally : 250
Number of existing VLANs : 8
    VTP Operating Mode : Transparent
    VTP Domain Name :
    VTP Pruning Mode : Disabled
    VTP V2 Mode : Disabled
    VTP Traps Generation : Disabled
    MD5 digest : 0x73 0xC8 0xF8 0x2C 0xB1 0x67 0xB6 0xC4
Configuration last modified by 0.0.0.0 at 0-0-00 00:00:00
Are there any issues with not configuring a VTP Domain Name?
    Andy

Yes you can create VLAN's without a VTP domain name and in Transparent mode, or at least on Catalyst IOS you can.
The issue I was thinking of was when you take a vanilla switch and connect it to an existing switch with a trunk and the new switch inheriting the VTP domain name and vlan database. For example if I configure up a 2950 as a VTP server with a domain name of VTP and then create VLAN's 10, 20 & 30. If I then take an unconfigured 2950 (or one that has had the configuration erased and the vlan.dat file removed) and put a cross-over cable between them, an 802.1q trunk link will be formed and the 'new' 2950 will inherit the VTP domain name VTP and the vlan database containing VLAN 10, 20 & 30.
Will the VTP domain name be inherited if the switch was set to Transparent before it was connected?

  • Converting VTP transparent to Server

Here's the issue. I have 4 switches currently and I am adding 3 more. Each switch is setup for VLANS but in VTP Tranparent mode. I would like to make one of the switches a VTP server and then make the others clients so I no longer have to make the changes on each switch.
My Question is, will I lose the currently VLAN config when changing from transparent to server?

No, you wont be losing the VLANs when changing from Transparent to Server mode.
Please be extra careful when changing VTP modes and pay close attention to configuration revision # and make sure there's not another server out there because by default all switches are in Server mode.

  • The difference between VTP server and transparent mode on Catalyst Switch.

    Hello
I have a question about the difference between VTP server mode and VTP transparent mode on general catalyst switch.
Basically VTP server mode can create and modify VLAN configuration but  actually there is not any VLAN configuration through running-config, is it true?  When I checked it on Cat3550, certainly there is not VLAN configuration on VTP server mode. But VTP transparent can create VLAN and configuration but does not synchronize with other switch VLAN status. I appreciate any related information and reason of the VTP server mode specification, thank you very much.

  • What is the advantage of setting VTP mode to transparent?

I have a Cat 6509 and eighteen 3524 and/or 3548's. Obviously I want my 6509 to be in VTP server mode. But is there any advantage/disadvantage to having the 3500's in client or transparent. I would think client, but is transparent use less resources, both internal to the switch, and , external, i.e., network resources. I've seen some CCIE's insist that the 3500's must be in transparent mode and configure the VLAN info on them manually. What is preferred?

Configuring VTP in transparent mode requires manual configuration, a VTP-transparent switch does not advertise VLAN information to other switches and will ignore VTP updates from VTP clients and servers.
VTP propagates information about the VLAN configuration throughout the switched network. A Catalyst 6000 family switch can operate in any one of these three VTP modes:
Server—VTP servers advertise their VLAN configuration to other switches in the same VTP domain and synchronize their VLAN configuration with other switches based on advertisements received over trunk links. VTP server is the default mode.
Client—VTP clients are similar to VTP servers, except that you cannot create, change, or delete VLANs on a VTP client.
Transparent—VTP transparent switches do not participate in VTP. A VTP transparent switch does not advertise its VLAN configuration and does not synchronize its VLAN configuration based on received advertisements.

  • VTP Client or transparent

We have a big facility that we are deploying about 25 2960's used for access switches.   We have heard transparent is the best practice.  Is this still true and if it is can someone tell me why?    Throughout our environment, we have a cross of some running transparent and some running client.  It would be nice to stick to some standard.   Thanks!

VTP is a protocol that should be used carefully because it can lead to nasty effects. In regards to your question, there are some benefits when using transparent mode:
You can create private VLANs (they are not advertised through the trunk links).
You can create VLAN IDs from 1006 to 4094, 1024 limit is not a problem (extended VLANs are not saved in the VLAN database and are not propagated in this mode).
VTP and VLAN configuration are also saved in the switch running configuration file.
When you delete a VLAN from a switch that is in VTP transparent mode, the VLAN is deleted only on that specific switch.
In general, according to your network topology and your needs, the use of VTP is optional. If this switches are access switches, you can configure VTP Client in those you need the same VLANs. For example, if you have 10 switches that must be configured with the same VLAN info, that switches can be VTP Client and the others can be VTP Transparent (in order to forward VLAN info through all switches), but as I told you, this depends on what you need.
I suggest you to configure VTP Transparent in the switches you need to manually create VLANs and do not want to advertise them or configure private VLANs. Besides, for best practices and for security reasons, it is important to avoid sharing all VLAN info between all the switches. So, the switches that have VLANs with servers or do not have end user's VLANs, would be configured as VLAN transparent.
Configure VTP Client in the switches that will have the same VLAN info, then just configure a VTP server with the VLAN info and that is all, well, do not forget to do the proper configuration to share info between the switches (VTP domain, authentication, version, etc).

  • VLANs lost when moving from transparent to client VTP mode ?

    Hello,
We are not 100% sure of our VTP password. We have a VTP server (CAT) with vlans 1-10, and somewhere a switch (DOG) that is configured for VTP transparent, with vlans 12 and 13 locally configured. We want to configure DOG in VTP client mode, without any operational downtime. What will happen if we configure DOG with a wrong VTP password. Will it lose vlan 12 and 13, or will it still keep them ?
    thanks a lot Karien

Both the posts before this are accurate in their information.
I'll just try and break it down for you:
Simple answer to your question: It will keep the vlan information if the passwords dont match.
Vlan information WILL be overwritten on the switch if it receives a a VTP update that:
    * succeeds the authentication
    * has a config register higher than the one it is on
Ofcouse, this 'update' could be from a VTP client or a server but NOT from a vtp transparent switch. (it will never send out the update in the first place).

  • Cisco Security Manager & Cat6k in client/server vtp mode

Why won't CSM parse the config of a cat6k that is in client or server vtp mode?
Why does it have to be transparant mode?

    Hi,
I am the TME for CSM. Currently CSM will only support VTP transparent since we only parse the running-config file. If you are running server/client it means that your vlan configuration will NOT be in the running-config (but in a seperate file). CSM doesn't read this file so things break. Next version of CSM (3.2 Q1CY08) will work with VTP server/client. The way it works is that it still won't read this extra file but instead it will ignore the whole vlan configuration. So you won't be able to create new vlans when running server/client but still you can assign vlans to interfaces using CSM. You will be personally responsible in making sure the vlan really exist when you configure it in CSM..(so you do this via CLI).

  • VTP between two routers

    PC1 ----- SW1 ------ R1------SERIAL------R2------SW2------PC2
My SW1 VTP domain and i created 2 VLANs on it. Then on R1 i created sub interface for VLANs
    vlan1 0/0.10 192.168.10.1
    vlan2 0/0.20 192.168.20.1
I want to do my sw2 client of sw1 domain. How can i do it ?

You can't really and there would be no point if you have subinterfaces on the router because the IP subnets used for each vlan would be different in each site.
If you wanted to extend the vlans across the serial link you could look at L2TPv3 to do that and then have the same vlans/IP subnets in each site but even then with two switches I would just use VTP transparent and create the vlans on each switch.
