5508 - 3502 AP bandwidth Question

OK,
Here is the quick rundaown...
Our public wifi circut (verizon wireless) was upgraded from 25M to 150M due to over 500 devices connected and fighting for bandwidth.
I noticed when runnung tests that when associated to th 3502 AP's Im getting around 9.7Mb down. On ANY of the 3502's
When I move to a 3602 and associate to it, I get roughly 35Mb.
Im asking if anyone knows if there is a bandwidth limitation on 3502? Is there a setting on the WLC or the AP itself?
Thanks

ok, so you are using Bronze, do you have LAN side QoS in place?
What type of port are the AP connected to? 100M 1G etc
How many ports do you have connected from teh 5508 to the switch?  LAG or individually connected?
HTH,
Steve

  • Bandwidth Question

I wanted to ask a question which has been playing on my mind for a while now. Thought this is the best place to ask.
I am currently on ADSL+2 and i get around 17mbps-19mbps live 650meters from the exchange line lenth 19db.
Now my exchange is going to be live for Infinity soon, im not planning on switching just yet as i pay a heavly discounted price on my broadband package and if i want to upgrade i will have to pay full price = £15 extra a month.
It got me wondering that if BT ADSL customers start switching to Infinity, will it mean less congestion on the ADSL network? like will it benefit me? or are both BT's FTTC and ADSL bandwith combined? Its hard to explain but im sure most of you understand what i mean
    Solved!

    @Eamdad
They use different backhaul through BT Wholesales network but the same links into BT retail, so in theory you are correct assuming BT retail have enough bandwidth on their interconnect links.. However i agree with john46.. the number of people switching probably won't make a lot of difference

  • Wireless 5508 HA mode, urgent question! Many thanks

    Hi, experts,
our company has order two WLC 5508 and want to deploy as HA mode.
one is air5508-12-k9, another is air5508-HA-k9.
however, due to proper installation, someone has installed license into HA model, right now, two WLCs are both primary.
When I wanted to convert WLC back to HA by using"config redundancy secondary" command, it displays I need minimal AP licenses to convert it.
    My question is
    1. is there any way to identify this model is HA or not HA model, I've checked WLC's label and inventory and PID, both are AIR5508-K9. it's not clear which is HA.
    2. if order is correct, is there possible to convert WLC to HA mode without AP license (50) ? I've reset config to factory default, but no use.

    Hi,

If you bought this part number :AIR-CT5508-HA-K9 - Cisco 5508 Series Wireless Controller for High Availability, means you have HA WLC.
AIR5508-K9  - It means that it just a normal model with AP license.
    2. if order is correct, is there possible to convert WLC to HA mode without AP license (50) ? I've reset config to factory default, but no use.
There is no way to convert t HA mode without 50 AP license.

  • General mail bandwidth question...

We are using a software spam solution on a separate server that filters the incoming mail by domain, then sends it on to OSX Server mail. We only have about 100 users.
We have what we consider to be a fairly good connection to the internet, 10MB x 2MB, yet it seems like the processing and handling of email is using a lot of our bandwidth.
We think it is because of the large amount of spam we are handling. We are averaging about 55,000 messages per day incoming, 75% of which is quarantined as spam, the rest being delivered to the users. That comes out to about 130+ emails per account per day that are potentially spam.
We will be ordering a new spam appliance shortly that will bring the catch percentage into the 99% range, but here is the question:
We obviously must accept the incoming mail to process it for spam, thereby utilizing bandwidth. Are there methods we can use to detect and stop the flood of spam, maybe at a TCP level before it takes up bandwidth?
The spam has just gotten ridiculous. It is up 8 times from a year ago. Looking for thoughts or directions to look into.

It only gets worse. Over 92% of the traffic to our machine (130 domains, 1000+ users) is spam. About 80% of that gets nailed at the RBLs, half of the rest by our filters, and the rest end up in user boxes to be postprocessed by SpamSieve (or whatever Qurb became for our Windows users). Apparently it is still against the law to exterminate spammers, and there seems to be a large percentage of the breeding population who still purchase their promotions, or can't secure their Windows botboxes, so through the magic of compassionate capitalism and certain lame OSen, spam is not going to die anytime soon.
You could offload your processing by using the likes of Postini or other services, or the spam appliance you mentioned. Beyond that, or my very tongue-in-cheek suggestion of vigilantism, there is no cure.

  • M.2 Compatibilityand Bandwidth Question

    Hello all,
I am going to be building my first PC  and am trying to get all of my information straight before i buy everything. I am looking to get:
    Intel i7 5930K
MSI X99 Gaming 9 AC mobo
    512 GB Samsung xp941 SSD
    gigabyte gtx 980 g1 gaming (x2)
I have tried searching low and high through the internet, forums, and manual but cannot come up with a 100% sure answer.
So my question is if i have the xp941 in an adapter in a PCIe slot, being that it is PCIe gen 2 and x4, will that affect the bandwidth of my two graphics cards running at gen3 x16 each? I am not sure if putting a gen 2 in a gen3 slot downgrades all of the slots to the lowest generation or even lower lanes. And if i am using a M.2 PCIe adapter card (only using the adapter for the heat sink) will i still be able to boot from the SSD?
Also, looking at the compatibility list for this board, it shows the xp941 but only in the 256 GB size. Will the 512 GB version still be compatible?
Thank you all so much for your help in advance

First of all using a gen2 card does not affect cards in other slots. Gen3 cards in gen3 slots will stay at gen3. However there are population rules that will switch available lanes depending on the slots populated and the cpu used (5820K: 28 lanes / 5930K and above: 40 lanes). To keep both card in x16 mode and using the M.2 adapter card you need to follow the population rules for 3-way SLI. The vgas need to be used in PCI_E1 and PCI_E4 while the M.2 card needs to be used in PCI_E5. Of course it would make more sense to use the M.2 SSD in the onboard M.2 slot and don't use an adapter card at all. With your 40 lane cpu you could still use vgas in PCI_E1 and 4 while using the SSD in the M.2 slot with full bandwith.

    Usually yes.

There should be no problem as the capacity should be pretty irrelevant if the SSD type is compatible. MSi can't test all drives and other stuff available so a component not mentioned in the list is not automatically considered incompatible but in most cases simply not tested. For a confirmation - if wanted - you need to contact MSI directly: >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • FTP Bandwidth question

I have a disagreement with a co-worker. I feel if I'm connected to an FTP site but not up or downloading I'm using minimal bandwidth. He is convinced that just being connected is using loads of bandwidth. That makes little sense to me but I'd like an expert opinion.
If I'm looking for a file on an ftp server that will be there some time in the next 2 hours I see no reason to not be connected and refresh periodically to look for a file rather than logout and login.
    alan

    Hi alan ruta-
I do know that it will tie up the connection until you either release it or the server kicks you off. If the server is only allowed to make, say, 10 connections and you and nine other people are logged in and doing nothing it would be a problem for that 11th person.
There is a small amount of handshake data sent periodically but I believe it is a negligible amount compared to an actual file transfer.

  • The bandwidth question

    Hi folks,
i just have finished my website, but now I am concerned about
the size of the bandwidth. There are 3 pages. On each page there is
an embeded video (14 mb) which starts to play everytime viewer
visits that page. So that is total of about 40 mb of video files,
which will be playing basically all the time. Would anybody give me
an idea, what bandwidth package I may need for this? Thank you very
much for any input or advise.

I did not know there are still companies offering bandwidth

Most do not and I would simply use one of these.

  • Bandwidth Questions

I want to create a searchable site with lots of videos based
    on either a
MySQL or SQL server DB (have not decided yet). I want to
    figure out how
much bandwidth will be necessary based on the videos I want
    to use.
    1. When looking for hosting options, I have no idea what
    50GB, or 100GB
of bandwidth is. Is there some formula or way for quantifying
    this in a
    way that I can understand.
    2. How do you determine how a stable a site/host is going to
    be? Does it
matter if the videos are viewed simultaneously or just when
    they are
    first requested, etc.
    Thanks!

The bandwidth is how much data is allowed to flow to and from
    your site.
If you have a 50Gb limit, thats 50,000Mb. If you have a 100Mb
    file, it
can be viewed 500 times. Or, if you have 100 x 100Mb files,
    they can
each be viewed 5 times. You have to think about all the size
    of all your
pages, the images, any external javascripts, or CSS files. It
    all adds up.
How popular do you want your site to be? Are you having just
    one server?
On one network? What kind of backup will you have if the
    server fails?
What if there is too much traffic for the server?
People like Youtube have massive networks with servers all
    over the
world, all load balanced, so the website appears to be online
    all the
time. Last I heard (a couple of years back) they had hundreds
    of staff,
just for one video site. The money it takes to keep it
    running must be
    huge. W

Lots of testing by people who know what they are doing will
    help the
designers make a stable site. You will need high quality
    servers, with
spares, to keep your site stable. You will need almost
    unlimited
bandwidth, and a network with resilience.
Why reinvent the wheel? Its been done lots by lots of people,
    you may as
well use there services, and leave the headaches to them.

  • TCP Client Server - how to set timeout and bandwidth option

    Hi Friends,
I am writing a simple TCP based client-server app and I would like the connection to be dropped after a certain time of inactivity and also I would like to control the connection's bandwidth. I would appreciate if someone can throw some pointers as to how this can be done.
I have tried this so far, for Timeout I am trying to do this:
sock.setSoTimeout(10000);But I think this is not the right way as this will disconnect the server from all client connections I guess. I think the better way would be to write a timer or something for each connection but I don't know how...
    Any help?

sock.setSoTimeout(10000);But I think this is not the right way as this will disconnect the server from all client connections I guess.Wrong in a couple of ways.
    1) That doesn`t disconnect anything. It causes a read that reaches that time in blocking to be unblocked and an exception (java.net.SocketTimeoutException) is thrown. The Socket is still just fine and can be used (all other things being equal). At any rate you then decide what you want to do after a timeout. One possibility is to close the socket because to you that timeout means it is abandoned.
    2) setSoTimeout of ServerSocket applies to the accept* method. setSoTimeout of Socket applies to reads from that sockets input stream. Neither of those apply anything to all connections.
I think the better way would be to write a timer or something for each connection No setSoTimeout is correct. You will also then need to actually attempt to read something for that timeout exception to ever be thrown.
As far as the bandwidth question goes, you will need to define your goals better. Please do not just restate "control bandwidth" because that is not actually a very specific goal. Do you want to limnit the bandwidth used at one time (tricky) or do you want to limit the total bandwidth used. Either way requires some work but they are different things.

  • Best practices in wireless configuration?

    Hi,
Is there a best practice document that shows 3500 AP with 5508 controllers? The questions I have are below.
    1. Do I configure each AP to non overlapping neighbor channels(1,6,11 for 2.4GHz) or leave that to controller to decide? Does controller change the channel of an AP when it sees congestion on a specific frequency?
    2. For 5 GHz is it good idea to bond the channels? What frequency to use for neighboring APs? OR again, leave it to controller to shift as needed?
    3. For security what's best practices? 802.1x or different?
    Thanks,
    Sm

    1. Do I configure each AP to non overlapping neighbor channels(1,6,11 for 2.4GHz) or leave that to controller to decide?
Let the controller(s) decide.  By default the Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA) verifies the channel for interferrence every 600 seconds.  Because you have 3500 then make sure you enable Event Driven RRM (Radio Resource Management) on both channels.
Does controller change the channel of an AP when it sees congestion on a specific frequency?
The controllers will not change the channel when it sees congestion.  The controller will change the channel if it sees interference on the same channel.  The CleanAir will change the channel when it sees interference from non-AP interference like Bluetooth, Microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc.
    2. For 5 GHz is it good idea to bond the channels?
    Sure.
What frequency to use for neighboring APs? OR again, leave it to controller to shift as needed?
    Leave this option in default.
    3. For security what's best practices? 802.1x or different?Sure.

  • Does the MDS9222i GigE ports support 100BaseT IP network?

    Hi folks,
Do the four GigE ports on the MDS 9222i and 18/4 module support a 100BaseT IP network?  In other works can I connect the GigE port to a 100BaseT connection or does it have to be physically connected to a 1000Mb/s connection?  I have an IP cloud that has an actual max WAN speed of 35Mb/s.  Can I set the "max-bandwidth-mbps" down to 35Mb/s?
    Thanks

    The transciever only supports 1GE.
WRT bandwidth question: between 1-1000Mbps is acceptable.

  • Fabric Extender and Blade server connectivity(Cabling)

    Hi,
There is lot of information available about how a Fabric extender connects to the Fabric interconnect. e.g. SFP+ ports, cabling etc.
I am bit a confused, how does connectivity happen between the blade server and fabric extender inside the chassis.
The information available only gives us idea about the possible network cards in the blade servers.
I want to understand, how actual connectivity is done between the blade servers and fabric extenders.
Is it through some cables or anything else? Please help.

  • Xserve Network Slowdown

I'm experiencing a very slow network between my 30 Mac Clients and the Mac Server. We are also using Xserve-Raid as our storage device. The 30 Mac Clients are connected concurrently to the Xserve and this 30 Macs are using Adobe applications like Photoshop to open , edit and save to the Xserve.
This week we have a significant slow down on the network that a 2 GB of data needs 3 hrs to copy from the Xserve to the client.
How do I troubleshoot this kind of situation in the network?
Is there a way to compute how much bandwidth a 1MB file consume to copy from an Xserve to a client with a 2GB of bandwidth pipe? The mac client is using a 1 GB ethernet.

The first thing to do would be to look at what's changed between when it was fast and now.
Have any new devices been added to the network?
Have you changed any network elements (e.g. changed switches, etc.)?
Are the problems experienced by all clients or just some of them?
Is it bi-directional (i.e. equally slow on uploads and downloads)?
You say you have a 2gbps link to the server. That implies you're running link aggregation. Have you checked the switch logs for errors?
Off hand the most likely candidates point to either a link aggregation issue or a duplex issue. If it affects all clients it's likely to be on the links to the server. If it's bidirectional (uploads are faster than downloads) then it's likely to be a duplex issue.
You can also run commands such as netstat -i -w 10 to get a running count of the input and output traffic stats on a 10-second basis. That will tell you if your network is saturated. High error rates could also indicate a duplex mismatch problem.
As for the bandwidth question, a 1MB file consists of 8 megabits of data.
Since a 1gbps link equates to 1024 megabits per second, you're looking at 8/1024 seconds, or about 0.078 seconds to transfer that 1MB.
Of course that assumes you're on a 100% efficient network, which is never the case. A good network without a lot of tuning would likely yield 1/3 to 1/4 of the theoretical rate, so now you're looking at about 0.2 - 0.3 seconds.

  • WLC 5508 & Aironet 3502 questions CleanAir, AP modes, WCS

We currently have several 1230, 1240, & 1250 series LWAPPs in our environment being controlled by a 5508WLC.  We are going to upgrade all of the access points in our environment to the 3502 access points. We are having a site survey performed to determine the best placement of the access points and where additional access points are needed. Is there anything else required to successfully run and mainatain CleanAir? Currently all of are access point are in local mode.  Will there need to be a few dedicated monitor access points?  Is there a certian ratio of monitor APs to local APs that should be followed? We've had to deploy a couple of our 3502 access points because the existing ones failed and I noticed that the WCS would not predict the RF heatmap of the 3502 access point.  Is that something that will be addresses in a later version of the WCS software?
    TIA

    Hi Jason,
Just to add a note to the good tips from the Wireless Jedi master (+5 Nicholas)
The Cisco "best practice" for the WCS is to be at an equal or greater version
    release than the WLC. In your case;
    WCS Version = 7.0.164.0
    Supported Controller Versions
    7.0.98.0
    6.0.196.0
    6.0.188.0

We got a new Apple TV for Christmas and it works wonderful. However, my question is this. We are on a satelitte internet system and our bandwidth is limited. Can anyone tell me what effect it will have on using up my 10 megs of bandwidth? If I run over the 10 mgs, the service either slows way down until it is reset on the first of the next month or I have to purchase additional bandwidth and it can get expensive.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you only have a 10MB limit on the Internet connection you might as well not have Internet access and certainly should not attempt to stream anything.
If the limit is 10GB, then you will need to be careful with streaming as most video is 1-3GB for a one hour show.
