5508 HA pair licenses

I have 2 5508 that are currently running as active with 150 licenses each. I want to go to HA SSO can 100 of the licenses be relicensed to the primary since it only requires 50 licenses to convert an active license 5508 to standby HA SSO?

So are you saying if the 5508's were purchased with 100 each and a 50 adder license was added to each the 50 could possibly get rehosted from what will be the standby to the soon to be primary?
Thanks for your response

  • ASR Connected to 5508 HA pair

I have single ASR1006 and I'm attempting to add some redundancy to my WLCs that attach directly.  Right now, I have a single interface connected to a 5508.  Using subinterfaces I run the different WLANs and route them at the ASR.  I would like to have this 5508 pair up in HA, but I'm not sure how best to configure the ASR to do this.  I'm trying to avoid fronting them with a switch stack if possible.  One thought was to create a channel-group on the ASR that two ports are members of;one going to WLC 1 and the other to WLC 2.  Then I would be routing on the sub po1.xxx interfaces.  I'm not sure if the etherchannel would send the traffic correctly to the WLCs though.  I'm thinking the WLCs would still be in LAG mode for this.  Any thoughts?

Its really best practice to have a switch interface with the WLC's.  One of the important things also if your use LAG is the etherchannel should be set on the switch side as src-ip-dst.  Especially when you are doing HA, you might even run into more issues due to the design you are trying to use.

  • 5508-12 HA Licensing

Hello can the 5508-12 be converted into a standby HA controller? Cisco is abiguously saying that 50 permanent licenses are needed on a standby controller.
Does it mean we need 50 base licences (so only 5508-50 and above) or 50 licenses as any combination of base + adder licences?
    Thanks!

There are two things, to add another controller in HA,
    1. Either the controller which is assuming the role of Secondary got Permanent AP count license
    or,
    2. buy a HA SKU controller License for a controller which has got no other license.

I have WLC 5508(version7.4) and 50 AP-Licenses. When reboot the WLC, the AP-License will be lose.
I have to import the license file with tftp again(although the WLC will remind the file already exists).

    Yes,I save the configurations.
Actually, the WLC have 12 AP lic before, and have a 50 AP lic upgrade. when reboot the WLC
12AP lic is exist, but 50AP lic is gone.
After installing the lic the first time reboot, lic is exist, but the next time reboot the lic is gone.

  • Mac OSx/5508/3702i dropping issue

    Hi all,
I have installed dozens of WLCs but with this one customer rollout I have hit an impasse.  The customer has a 98% MacOS device environment running a 5508 HA pair and 3702i APs.  The Mac OSx users randomly lose access even when their device sits in one place within 10 feet of a below ceiling tile hung AP. Disconnects can't be recreated as no particular behavior seems to trigger the drop.  Also for some clients there is severe latency(>1000ms) just pinging the WLAN gateway. Pings from Gateway SVI to AP are fine(<5ms) Debugs imply AP is too busy to handle an authentication request even thought the AP only has 10 users and an insignificant amount of traffic flowing through it. This issue is not dedicated to just one AP either as folks all over the 30 AP environment suffer similarly.  Air Magnet shows no coverage holes.  Windows devices appear ok.
I am more interested if this is has happened to anyone else and if anyone has had something that has fixed this issue for them instead of troubleshooting.
TAC case has been open over 4 months with escalation and Backbone TAC involvement with no luck.
    Details:
    - Mac OSx versions are random and those running Yosemite do have the latest patch.
    - WLC versions 7.6.120, 7.6.130, 8.0.102MR, and 8.0.110 have not corrected the problem.  (although fewer errors are seen in the debugs)
    - Although APs are actually local to the controller, the customer has them in Flexconnect for HA and Bandwidth reasons.
    - problem happens with Band Steering and also with Dedicated 5Ghz SSID (2.4 unusable due to density of APs using 2.4 in surrounding buildings)
    - Clear Air 5ghz report score above 97%
    - tried Legacy Beam forming, no joy.
    - EDRRM is on
    - Fast Transition is on
    - Fast SSID switching is on
    - Problem occurs with 20 and 40 Mhz channel bonding.
    - 802.11k sticky cache has been tried to no avail.
    - FUS is at 1.8 (I hear FUS 1.9.0.0 not only fixes the subsystem bugs but may iron out problems with the Operation side too)
    - SSID running dynamic vlan assignment from NPS Server
    - 6 SSIDs total
    - No DFS channels being used
    - SSID timeout has been turned off
    - Data rates below 9Mbit are disabled
    - APs are roughly 25 feet apart.

    Thanks Leo,
Problem happens to multiple versions of OSx, those running Yosemite do have the latest patch.  Unfortunately I don't think disabling N is going to be feasible.  Due to the High density rate there is no b/g to fallback on (2.4 Ghz is completely saturated).  So that would leave users with basically just 802.11a?  I do have a customer with similar set up running 5508 (v7.6.130) with 3702 in flexconnect.  The difference is the1.9.0.0 FUS has been applied and they run Pre-shared key authentication. Where as the problem customer runs older FUS and Dynamic Radius based vlan assignment.

    Hello Everyone
    For the Environment:
    - I have a WLC 5508 With a license up to 100 AP, at the Point there are 39 AP connected.
    - The WLC is connected with 8x 1Gbit/s, as a Trunk ==> 2 Members of 3750 Switches Stack ( 4gig and 4 gig)
    - The AP are connected to diferent 2960s with an Uplink ( 3 Gbit/s)  to the 3750 Switches
    - There are max. 12 AP on each 2960s
    - The AP are powered over Ethernet
    The AP:
    - it runs a/b/g/n and on 2,4 Ghz i schould have 300 mbit/s as for the 5 Ghz it schould also run 300mbit /s
    - the Ap has an uplink of 1 Gbit/s
    The clients:
    - have a intel Wifi link 5300 AGN Card

  • MSE NMSP status inactive after WLC 5508 HA failover

I have a customer who has a Prime Infrastructure 2.0 server and MSE 7.4 server for Context Aware Services.   The MSE also has the AeroScout Tag Engine for Tracking the AeroScout RFID tags it has deployed.    They have a WLC 5508 HA pair running version 7.4 at their main campus, and two other standalone WLC 5508s at 2 other smaller campuses.   The issue they are having is that when a failover of the WLC5508 HA pair occurs at their main campus, they lose tracking of the WiFi and AeroScout clients.   The other WLCs are not affected.
When this happens, the Prime Infrastructure show the NMSP status of the WLC5508 HA pair as inactive.   The PI gives the message that the time of the WLC is before the MSE.  But the PI, MSE, and WLCs are all synched to the same Campus NTP server, and the time shows the same time down to the second.   I can get the WLC communicating to the MSE again by removing the Assignment of the WLC to the MSE, then re-adding it to the MSE a few minutes later.
We are not sure why the WLC 5508 HA pair occasionally fails over to the standby or back to the primary.  We have not seen any cause for the HA pair failover.   Is there something we need to do to the WLC HA pair so that the NMSP still works if a failover of the WLC occurs.  The customer is planning on converting one of their other Standalone WLCs to a HA Pair also.

That is what I have been doing.  But the problem is that the I have had to do this about 3 times in the last 6 weeks.  Each time correlates with a failover of the WLC 5508 pair.   Will this have to be done each time there is a failover, or is there some setting on the WLCs, MSE, or Prime Infrastructure that can prevent  having manually to un-assign, then re-assign the WLC to the MSE.

  • HA with WLC5508 and licenses

    Hello.
We are currently running our wifi with a WLC5508 with a base license for 100 APs, a NCS and about 90 APs.
Now are wifi is growing and we will need more than 100 APs shortly. When I checked the prices I found that a new 5508 for 100 APs isn't that much more expensive than an add on license and it would be great to have some redundancy. If I use two 5508's with license for 100 APs, what will happen if one of them fails and all APs connect to the single 5008? Is there a way to use both licenses for a single 5508 in the case that one of them goes offline?
Bonus question: What happens when the NCS database grows to big for its disk space (running as virtual appliance)? Will it start to delete the oldest entries in the database or will it fail in some way?

    Response for the Bonus Question:
If the NCS database grows too big for the disk space allocated, data will be deleted only according to the data retention settings under Administration>System Settings and will eventually crash if an additional virtual disk isn't added.  Keep in mind this warning starts popping up when the utilization on any of it's volumes goes above 60% so you probably have a little time.
Check Administration> Appliance to see which volume is above that threshold.  It could actually be the localdisk volume causing the alert and not the database.
Adding additional disk space to Prime Infrastructure is as easy as doing an ncs stop, powering down the VM, adding a new virtual disk (NOT increasing the size of original disk), then powering the VM back on.
To add additional disk space to NCS the TAC has a disk grow script that has to be executed once the additional virtual disk is added or you'll never see the volume increase once you power the VM back on after adding the additional drive.

  • WLC HA SKU Licensing Issue!!!!

    Hi Team,
We have received HA SKU WLC 5508 with no License. As per Cisco Documentation, by default HA SKU Standby WLC will be working as an Redundant WLC instead of Load-Balancing + Redundant WLC.
During the Primary WLC failure, the Standby WLC will retain its Role and here, the 90 Days timer will start.
Now, our doubt is, once the Primary WLC is up, what will happen to 90 Days Timer, will it reset?
    Regards,
    YSR

    Hi,
Thanks for the Information but still we have couple of doubts:
What do you mean by New WLC, is it Primary WLC?
What does AP Count mean here?
Are you considering "Fail-over scenario where WLC restarts" or considering the "Fail-over scenario where WLC is having Hardware Problem and need to be replaced".
We have gone through the Cisco Document and because of these doubts, our implementation has been stuck.
    Regards,
    YSR.

  • Upgrade to WLAN 5508

Does anyone know if there is an upgrade path from the WLAN 4402 to WLAN 5508? OR A proceedure to get the AP's to join the new WLAN?
We currently are using a WLAN 4402-50 and have maxed it out. We are plannning on purchasing a 5508 with 250 licenses, but we have AP's in remote locations using HREAP and it would be very costly to re-visit each site.

In the WLC 4400, go to All APs and click Details.  Choose the AP of your choice and go to High Availability.  Put the information of the WLC 5508 and click apply.
Alternatively, if you are tired of doing this on a per-AP basis you can go to Wireless > Access Points >  Radios > Global Configuration.  Under High Availability enter the information of the WLC 5508 and click apply.

  • Can anyone tell what exactly does the 3650 MA or MC does

    Hi
    Datasheet is not very helpfull..
I want to now if there is any benefit if i have a local 5508 HA pair at my central site and a 3650 MC Controller in my branch?
Is there any config sync between WLC or Prime with this 3650 in Mobility Agent or Mobility Controller mode?
    regards
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
MC-Mobility Controller & MA-Mobility Agent are two different roles assign to a wireless controller. In legacy systems (5508,WiSM2,2504) both roles reside on the same physical unit.
Typically MA is responsisble for terminate CAPWAP tunnels from AP, maintain client database where as MC is responsible for Roaming, RRM, wIPS, etc.Another important aspect is MC hold the license for AP registration. In legacy system you do not want to worry about both are doing by the same controller/device.
With this new Converged Access deployment model you have the option of seperate these data plane (MA) & control plane (MC) funtionality into two sepearte device. In a large scale deployments, you should have central controller acting as MC (it can be 5508,5760) & all your access layer 3850/3560 will act as MA & terminate all directly connected AP CAPWAP tunnels.
In small/branch deployment, you can use a 3850/3560 to do the MC funtionality as well. In that case it will act as a full WLC (with MC& MA functionality).
In your case, yes you can use 3650 to do the MA/MC at your branch (think of you got a WLC at your branch). If you require guest tunneling/etc, then your 5508 need to be run specific code (7.3.112.0 ,7.5.102.0 or 7.6.100.0) in order to inter-communicate with branch 3650.
As Scott mentioned, it is different architecture, so better you familiar prior to deploy it. Here is another good presentation you should watch.

Please refer to the below points esp. highlighted sections ( taken from link posted by Leo ) , it completely answers your query:
Configure one WLC as Primary (by default, the WLC HA Unit ID is Primary and should have a valid AP-BASE count license installed) and another WLC as Secondary (AP base count from the Primary WLC will be inherited by this unit) using the CLI in this step. In this example, WLC 1 is configured as Primary, and WLC 2 is configured as Secondary:
You do not need to configure the unit as Secondary if it is a factory ordered HA SKU that can be ordered from release 7.3 onwards. A factory ordered HA SKU is a default Secondary unit, and will take the role of the Standby WLC the first time it is paired with an Active WLC that has a valid AP Count License.
If you want to convert any existing WLC as a Standby WLC, do so using the config redundancy unit secondary command in the CLI. This CLI command will only work if the WLC which is intended to work as Standby has some number of permanent license count. This condition is only valid for the 5500 WLC, where a minimum of 50 AP Permanent licenses are needed to be converted to Standby. There is no restriction for other WLCs such as the WiSM2, 7500, and 8500.

  • Strange FCIP Issue (# of connections)

Is anyone aware of the number of FCIP connections you can have on an MDS9513 with
    Sup (Gen2) 3.2(2c)
    14+2 (Gen1) 3.2(2c)
    18+4 (Gen2) 3.2(2c)
We are in the process of replacing the 14+2 with the 18+4 - However it would seem I have encountered a strange restriction/failure when I come to configure the 18+4 GigE ports with the 14+2 GigE ports still configured (FCIP profiles, Tunnels etc) and Linecard installed (though admin down)
Though we have managed to configure at least 1 GigE Port on the 18+4 linecard, the issue is when trying to configure an additional FCIP channel on the 18+4. One side of the physical direct connected Pairing indicates as up and operational ie (GigE 5/1 to GigE 5/1). Its PEER FAILS to become Operational (Up) and continues to maintain in an Initialisation state and thus preventing a Tunnel to be created regardless of which GigE port is used. The following as been investigated:
•Change SFP - Fault still apparent
•Change Cable - Fault still apparent
•Change GigE Port pairing (ie 5/4<-->5/4) - Fault still apparent
•Investigate/Debug FCIP Profile for mis-configuration (ie PEER IP, passive mode, listening Port etc) - No mis-configuration found between pairing
•Investigate/Debug FCIP Interface for mis-configuration (ie PEER IP etc) - No mis-configuration found between pairing
•Licensing Checked - SAN_EXTN_OVER_IP_18_4 - Installed and in use on all switches
Since we have a dual Fabric Design - Fabric B exhibited the same symptoms with no additional configuration having been applied (ie no additional FCIP tunnels created), would seem to indicate at this moment in time that it maybe its a Gen1/Gen2 and/or Licensing issue.
The only thing left is to actually remove the 14+2 linecard.
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks Vijay for respond..
I am not using any transformation or Mapping. I configured a DB Adapter first. Then make a BPEL Process having input and output according to DB Adapter XSD file. then i just invoked and copied the output of procedure to output of payload.

  • Query regarding Mobility configuration

    Hi All,
I have some queries regarding mobility configuration. I have to two WLC's; one Cisco 5508 & another Cisco 4402. My queries are:
    1. I have configured both the WLC's in same Mobility domain & same Mobility group but with different Management IP segment. Will they be considered within the same mobility group or they will work as if they are the part of different mobility group?
    2. Currently I have 100 AP license on WLC 5508 & 50 AP license on 4402. I am having more than 50 AP's in  my network & all are registered with WLC 5508 since it is the primary. I want only selected 50 AP's to register with WLC 4402 in case WLC 5508 goes down. Is there any way I can achieve this?

Yes... As long as there is connectivity between the two WLC and the ports udp 16666 and IP97, the mobility should be up.
Depending on the code in the WLC, you can set the priority to the AP in the high availability. So the 50 AP's you can set them higher than the other 5.
