5508 Wireless
On the 5508 controller there seems to be a lot of certificates that can be installed. Is there an up to date article that covers all of them?
commands->download file to controller (vendor CA certificate)
(vendor device certificate) MUST BE IN PEM format
management->http-https: (X) ssl cert
security->web auth-> (x) ssl cert
When using OPenssl 9.8h I seemed like the only way I could create the request file was to not have a password (I was receiving memory alloc error when a password was specifed)
req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout mykey.pem -out myreq.pem -config c:\openssl\share\openssl.cnf
REM creates the mykey.pem and myreq.pem files
combine the certs together in a file called all-certs.pem
order is
device
intermediate
root
openssl>pkcs12 -export -in All-certs.pem -inkey mykey.pem -out All-certs.p12 -clcerts -passin pass:check123 -passout pass:check123
openssl>pkcs12 -in All-certs.p12 -out final-cert.pem -passin pass:check123 -passout pass:check123
output---> MAC verified OK
download (ssl) final-cert.pem to controller
Hi,
I am not sure of the Article but their use is straight forward.
commands->download file to controller (vendor CA certificate)
(vendor device certificate) MUST BE IN PEM format
Here device certificate and server certificate can be uploaded. Use case is EAP-TLS support when WLC is acting like a radius server. It needs to present its certificate and also validate client certificate when they present the same.So needs two certificates.
management->http-https: (X) ssl cert
Here it just needs to present the certificate so that your browser doesnt give the warning.Go to Management >https..to upload certificate for this purpose.
security->web auth-> (x) ssl cert
This certificate would be presented during web-auth when Internal web-server of the WLC is hit and you dont want warning because of that in your browser.Go to Security >web-auth>certificate to upload this certificate. This is attached to the virtual ip.From 7.6 onwards ..it has to be fully chained.
Additionally you can force WLC to use device certificate as HTTPS management certificate using the command:
(WLC) >config certificate use-device-certificate ?
webadmin Use device certificate for web administration

We recently purchased a second 5508 wireless controller (both licensed for 100+ AP's). What is the easiest way to configure and add the second controller so I can split the load between the 2 controllers and provide failover capability? I do not want to run in an active/standby mode since that will effectively cut our AP capacity by half even with both controllers running.
Should I just manually configure the new controller (long and drawn out process to configure all the parameters), backup the current controller configuration and import to the second controller (then change the ip address) or is their an easier way to cause the two controllers to synchronize the configurations?
We are currently running 7.0.240.0 on our active controller and I would rather not upgrade it until we get the new controller online so I can have less downtime and fail AP's between controllers.
What can you recommend?
JimI'm assuming then, when I update the software on the controllers I won't be able to choose which controller is primary for an AP anymore and will lose access to the 100 AP licenses (and the capability to have 100 AP's registered, 100 licenses on each Controller).
Read the Deployment Guide. It should mention that you can choose which controller is the "primary" and which one is the "secondary".
If I'm not concerned about quick failover can I still assign a primary and secondary controller for each AP and utilize all 200 AP licenses that are split between the 2 controllers?
You sure can. But this "old school" method is a very expensive method. Why? Because this means that you have two controllers with similar AP licenses. The newer AP SSO means one controller has a full license and the other has only an HA SSO license, which is a lot cheaper. -
Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller in HA mode
Hello,
is there a support of 1+1 mode (HA mode) at 5508 Controller?
If yes Is there a HA bundle or do we have to order two identical 5508 controller ?
Thanks for response.
RichardHello Richard,
FYI, WLC 7.3 has been released that includes HA features. Following are the links for your reference,

Cisco WLC 5508 Wireless Outdoor Mesh
I noticed that the 5508 requires a plus license feature upgrade in order to support Enterprise Wireless Mesh. My understanding is that enterprise wireless mesh is indoor wireless mesh support. Will the 5508 support outdoor wireless mesh without the plus license feature set?
Thanks in advance"Enterprise Wireless Mesh" should just refer to Indoor Mesh.
The 1520's are Mesh only devices and aren't part of the Enterprise Wireless Mesh. So, as far as I know, the 1520s are fully supported in the 5508.
Unfortunately, I do not have any supporting information to back this up. -
Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller with Splash Page Disclaimer
How do one configure a splash disclaimer page on a Cisco Wireless Controller 5508 with no authentication?
JimmyThere are many options to you in this scenario, but if you're looking to simply provide a splash page via the WLC without interacting with any other web servers, you can configure Local Web Authentication (LWA) as seen in this configuration example.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wlan-security/69340-web-auth-config.html?referring_site=RE&pos=1&page=http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wlan-security/71881-ext-web-auth-wlc.html
If you are not wanting the authentication, you can choose the "passthrough" method which will not require any credentials, only accepting an AUP or whatever you want. -
Cheaper solution for a 5508 wireless lan based
Hello, our wireless lan is based on a single 5508 (It's not HA). We would like to use a cheaper solution as a backup if this 5508 falls. Could 2504 works?
In short words, we have two RAP's that are connected in a hp switch and all ap's are connected to these rap's. Same for wlc, it's connected to switchHave you checked Radio Shack? The staff are pretty knowledgeable about what you need to connect MBPs to TVs. Their cables are way less than $300.

I cannot get my IPad2 to print (it cannot find the printer) using a Laserjet CP1525nw color printer across a wireless network using a Cisco 1508 Wireless Controller with 49 wireless access points. HELP!!!!
What is the secret to getting Bonjour to work on it?
I can get the IPad2 to locate the HP CP1525nw printer without a hitch using a low budget Netgear WAG102 stand alone wireless access point on the same network. If it helps somebody, here is what you need to do.
It worked for me, but only in Multicast-Unicast mode.

Redirect to web authentication not working on Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller
Hi,
I have a wlan with web authentication:
http://i55.tinypic.com/w145zk.png
and
http://i51.tinypic.com/344sfm0.png
When I connect to the SSID (I get correct IP from the Cisco 5508 Controller) and try to surf, I do not get redirected to the web authentication page (https://1.1.1.1/login.html), when I manually insert the URL I get "cannot display the webpage". Any idea?
The virtual interface is 1.1.1.1.
Here is a screenshot of interface and internal dhcp:
http://i52.tinypic.com/2vkm1d2.png
Any idea why clients are not redirecting?
Thanks!Thanks for the reply dmantil!
When I changed the Virtual DNS name to 1.1.1.1 (the same as the IP) I get redirected if I use http://198.133.219.25, but not with http://cisco.com, I get redirected only if I use IP.
I forgot to mention that the controller is in a lab with no access to DNS server. Does the controller check if the domain is valid before redirecting users? I cant find any documentation on how the controller redirect users. -
I have been monitoring the alarm summary but have been off couple days and i see one of my controllers is down. Getting critical level security and message is port is down on the controller, condition link down. The other issue is config difference found between NCS and Contoller, I tried getting them to sync together but still getting the same message.
Alvina:
can you login to the controller directly? open the GUI (or CLI) and login?
Try to audit the WLC configuration and see what are the exact config that differs.
Regards,
Amjad

5508 wireless controller - and limit SSID's
I am trying to figure out if I can limit some of my access points to only some SSIDs available – instead of everything that’s available on the controller?

Hi!
I try to configure a Cisco 5508 Wireless controller and 25 Air-lap1041 to use as VoIP and data. I read documents, manuals, etc, but the AP doesn't charge the configuration, or not conect with the Wireless Controller, why? No Radius server present, only WPA security.howto, please...
I try to put a static ip in the LAP, with lwapp or capwap command, (LWAPP/CAPWAP ap ip address direccion mascara) and the AP returns "You should configure Domain and Name Server from controller CLI/GUI." and i can't change the name of the AP (Command is disabled).

Hola:
I buy a gigabit switch. I connect the service-port to gigabit switch, and laptop to gigabit switch. I used 192.168.1.x ip address (192.168.1.157 to service-port and 192.168.1.233 to wired port on laptop, well, the laptop has two ip adress, 192.168.1.233 and 209.165.200.2, and the laptop works ok. Ping to 209.165.200.230 -ip address of management interface- and ping to 209.165.200.203 -ip address for AP, is assigned by DHCP of WLC. And i connect the ap to gigabit switch, and the wlc assigns well an ip direction.
I post the run-config and sysinfo log. The gigabit switch is tp-link model tl-sg1005d, no configuration.
Before the logs, I see this message from AP:
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
Hola:
He comprado un switch gigabit.
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?

Our 5508 Wireless Controller will drop MAC addresses clean out of the system. Addresses that are in use everyday just disappear. It is not a limitation issue because we are adding iPads everyday. And it is not a daily occurance, but maybe once or twice a week. Has anyone come accross this issue? Everything has been updated and it is more of a hassle than anything, I am just trying to understand what is happening.
Shannon,
can you be a bit more specific, when you say it's dropping mac addresses?
is that from the user list? the macfilter? -
Save config of Wireless Controller 5508 by SNMP
On Catalyst switches one can save the running config with SNMP by using the CISCO-CONFIG-COPY-MIB.
Is there an equivalent way of doing this on a 5508 Wireless Controller ?
Many thanks
chrisIs it Cisco best practices to create one large Vlan that contains both controllers, ap's and clients all in the same network ? Or should I be segmenting the network a particular way?
Not best practice. Segmentation is up to how you want to do it for the most part
With my current Wireless Controllers is it possible to segment the wireless network by building into seperate networks (vlans) but still allow clients to connect to the (mmg_wireless) ssid and roam throughout the campus without mobility and roaming issues?
yes, you could use AP groups and do a subnet per building. the traffic will still backhaul to the WLC then to the core. So if the latency is the fiber between the buildings you would still have an issue. you could also use FlexConnect, but would need to know more on how the application is supposed to work to answer that better
Is it necessary to segment my wireless network by creating more vlans instead of putting all of the ap's controllers and clients all in the same network? Will having all of my wireless devices in the same subnet degrade my wireless network because everything is in the same broadcast domain?
IMHO, I think the AP should be in their own VLAN, and the WLC can live in the 'server' vlan if you want.
Is there a maximum recommended number of ap's that should be on a controller at any given moment? I currently have 200 ap's on one controller.
with 672 clients currently conencted to them. (360 of them are connected to the mmg_wireless ssid) .
how many ports are you using to connect to teh 6509? if you are using all 8 ports you should be fine.
Is it best practice to seperate the maangement ip's of the controllers and ap's from the client vlans?

Statistics\Reporting from a Wireless Conrtoller
After explaining all of our requirenments to the local Cisco Partner they prepared a quote and we purchased a Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller and 6 Aironet 1141 wireless access points. The wireless coverage in the building is great.
The problem is, we paid over $10,000 and one of the big reasons we upgraded is that I really need to get statistics. How many devices are using the wireless over a period of time. I need to be able to report how many and what type of user are accessing our wireless on a monthly basis.
I cannot find a way to do it from the software on the Wireless Controller and now theCisco partner has no clue how to get that information for us either.
Has anyone else found a way to do this?
Thanks,
AnnaHi Anna,
We can use Either Cisco WCS or NCS for this or u can go for any freeware SNMP walk tool on Google and use WLC MIBS on the same.. however... these can answer only the first part of ur question that is..how many and what type of user are accessing our wireless on a monthly basis.
But i am not sure of any device on this earth telling us what type of device users are accessing.. may be this will give u the MAC address and then using OUI i thing u need to get the vendor information..
Please dont forget to rate the usefull posts!!
