564 black setup cartridge is empty

I have the photosmart 7520 and the small black setup cartridge is empty and I can't find anywhere to purchase a replacement.  The black 564 cartridges are too big.  What am I doing wrong?
thanks

Hello there folks,
I would like to post some extra information.  Setup cartridges are to initialize the printer only, once they are empty, a person has to replace them with regular inks.
Here is the first explanation in a document: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c02068088&lc=en&product=5199463&tmp...
Here is how to find the inks that are compatible with your printer: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c01766411&lc=en&product=5199463&tmp...
Finally, here is where you can buy the inks in the USA:  www.shopping.hp.com

When I go to buy the 564 Black setup cartridge, due to it does not come in a package with the other ink cartridges needed for my HP Photosmart 7520, I cannot tell which box has this cartridge in it.  How can I tell which box at the store contains this cartridge?  Thanks

The setup cartridges are included with the printer when you buy it, they are not available in retail stores.  If you purchased a printer and it did not include one or more setup cartridges I would suggest you contact your dealer for the proper cartridges.  If for some reason these are not available you would need to contact HP.
If the printer has been setup and used and the black cartridge now needs replacement you will need to buy the 564 or 564XL black cartridges.  These are available as singles, and may be available in some combo packages.  Make sure you purchase the correct Black or Photo cartridge.  The photo cartridge is commonly available in four pack combo's with the three color cartridges.  See the document here for information.

  • 564 black ink cartridges

Printer model:  HP 7520Ink cartridge calls for 2 black cartridges--one regular and one XLThe black replacement cartridges I've bought to replace the smaller (regular) one do not fit the carriage. They are the same size as the XL. I've bought cartridges in two different stores and neither fits. The printer will not function without all five cartridtes (2 black, and the 3 colors).

I have this image of a Photosmart 7520 ink setup that may help -- the example image does show the photo black cartridge having the "bow tie" on the cartridge instead of the newer style tiny camera image that is imprinted on new photo black cartridges; nonetheless, the image does also show the rather "giant" larger "regular black" color cartridge that can be used on the far right.  Except for the rather outsized "regular black" cartridge, the XL color cartridges are not overly large, that is, they fit in the same slots as do the regular sized color slots for the cartridge of that designated color.  Reference Posts by our Provost Bob_Headrick: Photosmart 7525 and Incompatible 564XL Black Ink Cartridge Question regarding Photosmart 7525 / Photosmart 7520 – five ink cartridges Please offer Kudos to Bob's Posts to show support and appreciation.   When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 - telling me black ink cartridge is empty when I know it is not

The ink level display was showing about 10% ink left in my large black cartridge.  I took it out because I wanted to see if there was any ink left in another cartridge I had laying around.  That one displayed empty.  Then, when I put the one that i can shake and clearly hear some ink left inside back in the printer, it refused to let me print because it said it was now empty.  I've taken it out and put it back several times and I don't hear it go through that pumping noise it normally does when you replace it with new cartridges.  It just says its empty and refuses to print or do anything.
I don't like this...makes me think HP is trying to make me spend more money on ink...
How do I force this thing to reassess the ink level to its true value?

...and I use HP cartridges.  I also would like to know if there is any way to force the printer to print even when a cartridge is out.

  • Black ink cartridge will not fit into assigned slot.

I cannot insert new black ink (564) into original black in spot (564 setup)on the left side of ink carriage, because new cartridge is wider than original. I already inserted a 564XL black ink into the black ink slot on the far right side of carriage. Printer would not work with only one black cartridge, so I bought a 2nd 564 Black ink cartridge to install on far left side of cartridge (but it won't fit).

Thanks for the model number and additional information.
The cartridge on the far left is called Photo Cartridge. You need to install a replacement photo cartridge in that slot. See the document below to understand the difference between the black and photo cartridges:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01839024
The two cartridges have different label icons on the packaging and on the cartridge. This will help you identify the correct cartridge in the store.
Alternately, please visit the link below to order the photo cartridge online:

  • How much ink is in 564 and 564XL cartridges?

I know the HP 564 box says it prints about 300 pages, and the HP 564XL box says it prints about 750 pages.  A salesman just told me there was only about 10% more ink in the XL, though.  How many ounces of ink are in each cartridge?

The salesman misled you, either intentionally or through ignorance.  There are actually five different 564 cartridges:  black, cyan, magenta, yellow and photo black.  For the black cartridge the standard 564 is rated at 250 pages while the black 564xl cartridge is rated at 800 pages.  For the black cartridge there is more than 3x the usable ink in the xl cartrdige.  You will see similar results with the color cartridges, see here for yield details.
[Update - HP has reduced the size (and price) for the Black 564 XL cartridges as described in the document here.  The lower priced black XL cartridge is rated at 550 standard pages.]
HP used to provide ink volume  (in mL) on their packages, but this was very misleading as newer cartridges and printers have higher pages per mL.  For example, the printers that use the 96 black cartridge get about 2x the pages per mL (or oz) as printers that use the older #45 cartridges.  This is due to changes in concentrations as well as improvements in the writing systems.  HP now rates it supplies using an industry standard method which is comparable across vendors and across printer models, see here for details.
Update - the HP PageYield site once again lists usable ink in mL for HP cartridges.  The following are listed for the 564 cartridges:
    Cartridge1 Reference yield Ink Volume2
HP 564 Black Ink Cartridge (CB316W)
    250 standard pages
    7.5 ml
HP 564 Cyan Ink Cartridge (CB318W)
    300 standard pages
    3.5 ml
HP 564 Magenta Ink Cartridge (CB319W)
    300 standard pages
    4.0 ml
HP 564 Yellow Ink Cartridge (CB320W)
    300 standard pages
    3.5 ml
HP 564XL Black Ink Cartridge (CN684W)
    550 standard pages
    14.0 ml
HP 564XL Cyan Ink Cartridge (CB323W)
    750 standard pages
    7.5 ml
HP 564XL Magenta Ink Cartridge (CB324W)
    750 standard pages
    8.0 ml
HP 564XL Yellow Ink Cartridge (CB325W)
    750 standard pages

  • Photosmart All In One C310 and 564 Set Up Cartridge

I have not been able to locate a 564 black cartridge that will fit in the black set up slot.  All 564 black replacement cartridges are the XL size (regardless of whether they say XL or not).  The printer will not operate without a cartridge in this slot.  HELP!!

See my response in your other thread here.  You need the Photo cartridge, available separately or in some four color photo combo packs.

  • Can I use the black ink cartridge only, & quit replacing the color cartridge when it's empty?

I have an HP Officejet 6210 all in one printer that takes color ink (#95) and black ink (#94).   I only want to print in black and white.   The color cartridges are more expensive and since I don't want to use them, I don't want to replace it.  Can I have the printer bypass the color cartridge (and the notifications that come with an emply cartridge) so it will allow me to use the black cartridge (#94) only and let the #95 sit there empty?  (ie it tries to print from there and I get the blank sheets...want to default it to the black ink cartridge 100% of time.)  I waste too much money on ink and wish to use the cheaper cartridge (#94) always.

Can't agree more. HP's strategy of getting more sells of its cartrige is notorious. It really drives consumers away. I am ditching my HP printer and getting a Brother instead.

Hello @johnnyboston and welcome to the HP Forums!
I'm sorry to hear of your troubles with your Photosmart 6510 printer, but I will certainly do my best to lend a helping hand
I will suggest that you try the steps in this 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Indicated Ink Cartridge Must Be Replaced' Message Displays on the C...l document to see if you can get the printer to recognize the cartridge.
Is it a genuine HP cartridge?

  • Printing in black when color cartridge is empty

    Hi,
I'm looking for a new color printer that will print in black and white when the (or a) color cartridge is empty. It seems like all the printer I've had in the past make you change out an empty color even if you are only wanting to print in black.
What does HP have to offer and or what do I need to know to find the correct type printer?
    Thanks,
    Paul

The printers with separate ink supplies and printheads (and typically four or more cartridges, one for each color) typically require ink in all colors to allow printing.  Printer's with a black and a tri-color cartridge with the printhead integrated with the ink supply typically do not require ink in all colors, and many of the recent models will work with the color (or black) cartridge removed compeltely.

  • Can I really not print in black only when the cyan cartridge is empty?

I have a message that the cyan cartridge is empty and that I cannot print until it is replaced. It's a new cartridge, less than a month old. I took it out and shook it, and can tell there's plenty of toner left. But my primary question is, why can't I print in black only without the cyan cartridge being replaced?

    Hi,
Any ink is required to maintain the printhead and service the printer.
Print head nozzles get clogged over time, most commonly by microscopic dust particles or dried ink. Nozzles are kept clean by servicing, including wiping the surface with a small rubber wiper, ejecting ink through the nozzles to purge particles and to prevent drying and pumping with ink to clean the print head. To keep the printer ready to print in either colour or black, these service routines typically consume some ink from every cartridge, even if only black or colour is used in the document being printed.
Oce the is not enough ink to service the printhead any depleted ink cartridge must be replaced to resume prnting:
