5800 in a state after update

Question

i tried to update my xpress music 5800 earlier to firmware version v50.0.005 from version 40.0.005 and now its mostly scrap.
the update process ran as would be expected downloaded the 145mb file and suggested the update would take 15 minutes.
the update took about 2 minutes during which time the lower half (vertically) of the screen went random coloured pixels and the top half had an endless loop of a column moving downwards. the rest of the visible screen was fairly skewed. i thought this normal as the firmware is re-arranging itself.
phone turns off,
comes back with (in horizontal mode now)

local mode

the updater program (Ovi Suite 2.2.1.22) then said all was well and the device would restart.
however,
upon restart the lower half (vertically) is just white with the last 'a' from the nokia local mode message partially drawn and the rest of the screen is trying to display the normal t-mobile background but starting from two thirds across (left to right) and carrying on. all this with a large white band moving endlessly from top-left to bottom right.
turns on and off ok and the key lock works and there appears to be normal service behind this mess.
any thoughts?
check the screen connection inside the phone?

Might have suggested three key "hard reset" keep these three keys depressed green, red and camera shutter whilst powering on until Nokia "Shaking hands" appears; it should return to "Country" selection if successful. Be aware that all data would be erased but this may be the least of your worries right now. Failing that a trip to Nokia Care point is probably indicated unfortunately.
