5800 (v.20.0.012-rus) Strange simbols in keyboard ...

I use Nokia 5800 (v.20.0.012) in Russia. My phone and input languages are Russian.
During editing of notes or contacts from time to time I need as Russin letters as English (Latin). But keyboard panel let me input only Russian letters, numerals and "strange" simbols (I don't know their names and where they are used...).
I've found only one way to get English letters - change input language in phone setup. But it's very hard to do every time when you are input Russian/English text!!!
How can I change "strange" simbols choice in keyboard to the NORMAL ENGLISH LETTERS?
Or it's bag of the firmware and it will be solved later?

Hello! Can somebody explain me what means this key on keyboard (see attachment)? Can I change function this button?
My native language is Russian. I want change type language between Russian and English quick. Now I must do at least three step for change language (= (input menu) > Language >English), and three for return back Russian.
Can I do this quickly (at one step/tap)?
Why developers can't change function for this strange button on something usefull (for ex. switch between two favorite languages)?

Strange things with keyboard

strange things with keyboard happens on my macbook - after cleaning keyboard (rag with spirit) I start mac and get sticky key (continuously type one letter and beeping on speaker). I shutdown mac, remove key and clean space under it... it helps - but I found other strange bug:
pressing left shift - gives me capital letter "O"
letter "O" - always capitalized
| symbol always comes with return button
now I use external keyboard - all good on it... but macbook keyboard still wont work properly
what can it be? how fix it?

thanks for your reply, and you might be right about using USB v2.0. The PS/2-USB adapters I am using are v.1.0 so may be incompatible, even though this technology is supposed to be backward-compatable.
Since this problem reared its ugly head, I have disabled the Toshiba applications and monitored the situation - OK so far, but I will keep an eye on it.

New firmware update for nokia 5800 is available for India. We are able to update it through Pc suit software update but nokia care is saying that no such official update is available. Lots of people already upgraded to new version and they are facing many problems. Every1 is posting there problem with new version in "new version is available for India now " thread that's why I am creating new thread to report new version problems here. 1. Same is the case. However, this is not a problem and digitally locked files are supposed to work this way. The solution would be to visit the nearest Nokia care center and have this unlocked, or wait hoping that Nokia would release OTA unlocking similar to N95

Very strange bug: random keyboard disposition

Hi,
I just experimented a very strange bug. I have Arch installed with the XFCE desktop and Firefox3b05 from unstable. I was reading my favourite austrian newspaper online: http://derstandard.at. There's the possibility to post messages under the articles, so I clicked on "Post", and suddenly, within the posting window... my keyboard disposition went crazy. Instead of "a", I had a greek omega, instead of "s", I had a euro symbol, and so on. And more: all the other apps were suddenly affected too. I opened mousepad, same story.
I restarted X, went to the same site... and had the same experience. But after the third time, things seem to have returned to normality.
Anybody ever experienced something similar? What could this be related to? X going crazy?

Well, viewing the site is not the problem. You'd have to get an account and actually try posting a message on their message board. That's where the havoc begins.

Strange Apple pro Keyboard

My Apple Pro Keyboard worked very well after I bought with my iMac G5. But after I plug-in a new USB card reader into the USB port on the back side (They said it supports Mac), my keyboard became very strange. In the beginning it repeated the "enter" key, after a few minutes, it responded very slowly, and finally not responding. I unplug it and replugin, same. But after two to three days, I plugin again, everything is OK. But after a few minutes, it started to behave like just I mentioned. What happened to my keyboard?

I have tried keyboard without the reader, because the reader made the Finder freeze. I have tried the keyboard using another Mac, but the same thing happened. That USB reader is faulty, I think, because when it was plugged into a PC notebook, there's no response from the OS. But it's so unbelievable that a reader spoiled my keyboard. How do you think about it, Miriam?

PowerShell CSV script behaving strangely with different keyboard language layout

OK kinda stumped on this one. I have written the below simple script that takes a group and outputs its members to a CSV file. However, the script is not outputting correctly when it is run under a different keyboard layout, in this case a Norwegian
keyboard layout ("For" loop doesn't serve any purpose in this trimmed script version but was left in as this was the script that was tested):

Has anyone ever dealt with anything like this, or know why the output is not delimiting correctly? There are no errors when running the script in either English or Norwegian keyboard layout.

I did a quick Google search and found this TechNet thread where jrv discusses an issue similar to mine:

So it looks like I can just run a "(get-culture)" command in my script before I output to CSV and then use the "delimeter" parameter of export-csv. With the get-culture cmdlet, there's 2 parameters I believe I can use: the "LCID" parameter, and the "keyboardlayoutID"
parameter (but I can't seem to find a difference between the two parameters). Would you guys know which one of these parameters (LCID or keyboardlayoutID) might determine the delimiter used in CSV's? (link to LCID's below)

Strange external mouse/keyboard behaviour

I experience a weird behavior with the external mouse and keyboard when used with my laptop (Dell Studio 14z):
1. When the laptop runs on battery and I plug in the kb/mouse everything works fine until I connect the AC cable, which causes a hard freeze (not even SSH access possible)
2. When the laptop runs on AC and I connect the kb/mouse everything seems fine only as long as the laptop runs on external power. If I unplug the AC cable, the mouse and kb go dead until I plug it back in.
As far as I can tell, there is nothing in the logs.
Any pointers to how to resolve this a greatly appreciated!

I am not sure whether this is the answer but do you have the acpid daemon running? If not install it and get it running and see if that makes any difference.

5800 Software update V20.0.012

I updated my Nokia 5800 with V20.0.012 (Custom Version 20.0.012.217.06). The dictionary and search facility have not installed. Any advice would be most welcome.

Nokia 5800 and AVRCP issues.

First of all I just regret having 5800 in the first place, I really pity nokia , they have lost all the respect I ever had for them.
Starting with the problem I bought a Jabra BT3030 few days back to use it along with my nokia 5800, Nokia 5800 does support AVRCP profile ( atleast they have mentioned it on their website http://www.nokia.co.in/find-products/products/nokia-5800-xpressmusic/specifications ) , 5800 ( Rev : 20.0.012 ) just fails to understand the remote play / pause / forward and backward tracks commands. Which I found to be working perfectly with Nokia E51/E71 and to my horror even the old N73 connects seamlessly.
I have tried with two of 5800 handsets ( even both having the same colour :-) ) and no wonder they had the same problem , I am not sure of the firmware revision of the other handset , but it wont be greater than 20.0.012 for sure.
I had mailed this to nokia support regarding the problem and following was their reply;
"This e-mail is with regard to functionality of headset Nokia 5800. We regret the inconvenience caused. We would like to inform you that Nokia does not recommend the usage of non Nokia enhancement with Nokia product as it might hamper the optimal performance of the phone."
What a pity I must say, the people replying dont even understand the meaning of bluetooth standard's which have been written for AVRCP.
Please advice if anyone elseis also facing the same problem and how should I tackle this.

Video and photo date&time stamp (nokia 5800)

Hi,
i have the nokia 5800 and i'm having a strange problem.
i had to format my memory card so i copied everything to my pc, and after i formated it i copied everything back to the memory card.
now if i open an image and check to see the date it's showing me the date and time i copied the file back to the memory card instead of the date&time i took the image.
same thing with the videos.
i have the same photos in my pc and when i check the exif data i can see the date when i took the photo.
i opened the videos with "media player classic" and i looked for the "media info", and i can see there when the video was made but it's in UTC time.
how can i make the phone read the correct time when the images and videos were taken?

5800 wont start

When I woke up yesterday morning my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was turned off.
Strange cause I just recently charged the battery, when I tried to turn it on nothing happens except the screen lighting up until I release the on-button. Also, inserting the charger makes no different.
I have tried removing the sim and memory cards, and to make a hard reset.
The latest firmware was installed a week ago, anyone got any suggestions on how to solve my problem?

@ michell - To rule out Battery issue, keep on charge for 20-25 minutes and see if it switches ON ..
Next, try the Hard Reset ?
Press 'Green' + 'Red' + 'Camera' buttons togethere and while keeping them pressed power oON the phone.. Leave the 3 buttons only when you see the Nokia logo ...
If nothing works, you need to visit Nokia Care

Gnome shell, media keys and strange X11 cursor bihaviour

Hi guys,
I'm new in this forum, but old arch-user. This time I'm experimenting a really strange issue.
I have a lot of packages installed (pacman, but AUR too), and I tried some beta packet, so I don't know if this issues is caused by me, or is a sort of out-of-the-box, but this is what happens:
During Gnome-Shell session (3.16.2 actually), if I press any media keys (my keyboard has prev-next song, play/pause, stop, vol up-down) my cursor goes hidden (all works, but I can't see pointer). If I'm in empty desktop (no opened window), after 20~50pixel in any direction I can meet again my mouse. Instead, if I have some windows open...random behavior...cursor could reappear after 50pixel mouse movement, or it could stay hidden after 4-5Kpixel. The only way to get cursor again in short time is go to gnome overview (the function linked with super key or upper-left corner, by default).
Additional strange facts:
- mouse is working all the time (link is focused, button is pressed, focus follow mouse event, and so on...)
- seems gnome top bar get same effect as empty desktop (20~50pixel and cursor is visible again)
- if I link key combination with media function (Ctrl + Up/Down for volume, for example), everything goes well
- I have a secondary bluetooth keyboard with same media keys, but this peripheral is not affected by this issue
Any additional informations will be provided, but first, I did my homework:

Got is sorted myself.
I installed KDE which worked perfectly. Then went about trying to install chromium. After installing and trying to launch chromium I noticed it would just hand unless launched by root (terminal).
Which led me to check permissions under /home.
Turns out that somehow my /home/{me}/.config directory was owned by root:root . A simple chown -R ~/.config and a reinstall of gnome got everything working fine
NB: maybe someone with more insight can figure how/why ~/.config was owned by root from a fresh install and setup of systemd ??

Problem in copy 2 WORD files to a new WORD file

I have a problem in copy 2 WORD files to a new WORD file -
i.e. the text of the new WORD file suppose to be composed from the text of the 2 original WORD files.
Unfotunately I get a new WORD file which i can't open, or a file which contains strange simbols in it.
So far i succeded in copy one WORD file to a new WORD file , using - FileOutputStream and FileInputStream, the code is:

after that i write some lines in fruit.doc
then I just execute your code.
after that I open dst2.doc
then I found it as exact copy of fruit.doc
I doesn't get any junk text.
Your code is working absolutely fine.No it is not. Add som styling, headers, index etc to the docuements, and then try to run the code. It's not possible to just append two word documents. You have to parse the files and read relevant information, and then create a new valid document with that information.

Beware Updating To V2.0 Software

I finally managed to update to ver 2.0 last night, uk unlocked N97 on Orange. The update itself took several hours, thanks to nokia ovi suite and software updater repeatedly crashing and needing reinstalled, resulting in me losing all my data that I had just backed up, nice 1 Nokia.
Anyway, all day today, the widgets haven't been working, it keeps asking me to set up my email, resetting itself, gps is **bleep** again, accu weather not working, browser taking 30 seconds to recognise a click and the FM transmitter seems to have disappeared and the new and improved OVI store doesn't work at all.
So after I finished work, I nipped into the Nokia flagship store on Regent street to get some help. Got chatting to a helpful member of staff and mentioned that i'd updated the phone and now loads of things weren't working. He asked if i'd updated to v12 (I hadn't, i'd just got it back from repair to sort the camera lense and dodgy gps, and the repair centre had installed V12 for me) and when i replied "no, to version 20" his exact words were "oh no" According to him V2.0 is seriously broke in many ways, he was nearly as **bleep** as me actually as he has an N97 as his personal phone. He claimed that among other things, it wipes the fm transmitter, wipes wifi functionality from the phone (although strangely this is one of the things still working on mine?) He was quick to agree with me that it was an absolute disgrace the way this was being dragged out and they basically knew nothing about what was being done. It was actually quite funny as I went to show them the missing fm transmitter screen, the phone crashed right in front of them, without me even doing anything, both members of staff looked like they wanted to be sucked through a hole in the floor.
Now I don't know if the V.2 software has been pulled from the updaters or not, but according to this guy, Nokia are right now frantically working on a fix for the V.2 software but surprise surprise has no idea when we'll be likely to see it. Like many on here, I have been patient and despite having some niggling problems, I held off complaining with the expectation that V.2 would solve many of the gripes and annoyances, but it seems Nokia are absolutely incapable of properly testing things work properly, one of the worst examples of quality control i've ever seen, maybe only rivalled by the Microsoft Xbox 360 debacle.
Until recently, I hadn't had a Nokia phone for about 10 years (7210) but liked the look of the N97 so I bought an N97 and 5800 Xpressmusic to compare, intending to sell on ebay the 1 i didn't want. I actually preferred many of the things on the 5800, but ultimately the extra storage, better screen and keyboard won me over to to the N97, especially as it seemed to be working pretty well over the last week or so with the V12 software. Just this weekend, I gave my little sis the 5800 as a gift to cheer her up after she got pick-pocketed at Oxford circus on Friday, and now it seems I'm left with an expensive brick and may even have to go and buy another cheap handset, just to keep in touch until the problems are hopefully ironed out once and for all.
I'm no fanboy and have no loyalty to any manufacturer, but this experience has left me with a sour taste in my mouth, Nokia really need to pull the finger out. The ironic thing is, about 30 minutes after I managed to update, I got an email from Orange about the iPhone, which is supposedly coming in 2 weeks so I may end up just buying out my contract and upgrading to a new iPhone. The idea of the N97 was that I wanted an alternative to an iPhone, but it seems its just not rready to step up to the plate.
Overall, I feel cheated by Nokia, foolish for believing their grandiose claims about the performance of this phone and unless this is sorted and quickly, its not unreasonable to assume it may be another 10 years before I buy a Nokia product again, way to go Nokia, what a response to your declining market share. And i'm sure there are thousands more like me.....

You would only pay once. If for some reason you were billed more than once Customer Service is pretty good about fixing things like that.

You should be just fine since your Touch is backed up to iTunes. You might find some apps in a new location on the screen, but they should all be loaded just like they were before. If you have anything on your Touch that is not on your computer, rectify that before updating to 3.0 just in case the Touch is erased in the process -- shouldn't happen, but it did to some.
Finally, be aware of all the issues with 3.0 before you update. The wi-fi and YouTube issues seem to be random, I didn't have problems with those but many did. For me I'm extremely bummed that (a) Live Updating on the Touch is broken with 3.0 -- smart playlists don't update until your next sync, and (b) My factory Honda iPod integration no longer works (I've hear that BMW's is broken too) and there might be other accessories affected.

Hey, is there an app like DockStar to put an indicator, in the manu bar, for new emails?

I'm able to access my gmail well from my ipodtouch and online from pc too.
emails i got in mail folder in msgs in my 5800 are yrs older i think..
