5870 with GT120 in MP 5,1

I currently have 5870 driving a 30" and a 23" display. I much rather have the radeon just drive the 30" since it's my main work screen, plus with my current setup I'm splitting the vram with a display that doesn't do much serious work - the 23" only runs things like finder, browser, etc, nothing demanding. I do notice a drop in performance when I'm doing some graphic intensive work (or a gaming - noticeable fps drop in wow) with an avi running on the smaller screen. Back with my old MP 1,1, GT8800 and same monitor setup that would really slow stuff down, as if the card barely manged to render pixels (CPUs never maxed out, 16gb ram).
I'm about to get the gt120, and it's hard to find much info on a setup like that. So a few questions...
How's the noise of the gt120? Would I really notice any performance increase with full 1GB vram available for the 30"? I know gt120 is not a great card, but it'll never be used for any graphic or gaming - however it will also connect to my TV through mdp-hdmi. I know I can do the same with the 5870 but cutting vram into 3 plus having to buy 2 mdp to dual link dvi puts me off.
In short, I want to maximize the performance of the 5870 on the 30" with one extra monitor and TV.
any thoughts?
thanks

Finally I found a thread talking about the same problem I have. Here's my experience.
My 2010 12-Core Mac Pro with 5870 is running 3 monitors
24" LED Cinema Display(rendering or gaming) + 20" Cinema Display * 2(browser, finder, msn, skype, DVD or low-res movie, etc.)
After I connected the 3rd monitor to the 5870, I realized a huge performance drop on rendering and running Parallels Desktop(the window 7 is quite LAG when I have 3 monitors connected to 5870, that's is extremely smooth when I only have 2 monitors), for sure gaming as well.
I was thinking getting a GT120 or 2600XT(I guess that's the only 2 Mac Pro graphic cards without power supply), I personally prefer GT120, however, none of the people I knew having experience running "Muti-Brand" Graphic Card in Mac OS. So I kinda worry there would be any problem when I have 5870 & GT120 together.
Plus, I used to use 2 Mini-display to dual-link adapter to connect 3 monitors(when I still have the 23"LED in stead of 24"LED), the cost of the dual-link adapter really kills me.....
Actually, for me, I thought it is extremely stupid we have to use 2 dual-link adapters for 2 20" LCD display...it is almost the same cost of 1 5770, however, I don't have any power supply cable for 5770. After upgraded to a 24LED, I get rid of the 23" LCD & 1 dual-link adapter, but now I still using one.
I'm still looking for some professional advice on getting a GT120 or 2600XT...I really want to share some work load for the 5870 and I really hate using the dual-link adapter....
Him.

Not sure what you are trying to do.  I interpret what you are saying is that you have a monitor connected to the DVI port and another to the mini displayport (mDP).  Are you physically trying to turn the one connected to the DVI port off (and on) causing the one on the mDP port to "shutter"?  If so, take a look at SwitchResX.  It will allow you to programmatically turn monitors on or off.  Maybe that will cure the problem.
Of course if I am misinterpreting what you are saying ignore this post.

  • 24" LED Cinema Display not working on new MacPro with GT120 graphics card

    Dear All,
I have recently purchased a new Mac Pro Quad (2.66 GHz, 6mb DDR3 1066 MHz RAM) with a 24" LED Cinema Display. When powering up the computer for the first time, the display was blank. I swapped it out with a 23" Cinema HD Display, and it worked fine, so I thought it might be the LED Cinema Display itself. However, when I tested the LED Cinema Display on my MacBook (Model 5,1; INTEL Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz), it worked like a charm.
Has anybody seen this behaviour? I'm assuming that it's a software issue (since the GT120 DVI adaptor works with the Cinema HD Display, so the mDVI adaptor should be good). [I also rebooted and wiped the PRAM and NVRAM, to no avail.]
Any and all help would be appreciated.
    Best,
    Drew

Thanks for the reply--I've done that before, for sure.
An odd thing did happen when I reset the PRAM & NVRAM a second time--it worked. Maybe I did it wrong the first time? Anyway, it's working perfectly now. Many thanks.

  • DisplayPort not functional in 2008 MP with GT120 and GTX285

    Hi all,
I've searched the forums, but with no luck.
I can't get any sort of signal out of the Mini-DisplayPort of my GT 120 in my 2008 Mac Pro.
    I've tried the following:
Mini-DP to DVI adapter -> DVI -> Display
Mini-DP to DVI adapter -> DVI to VGA adapter -> VGA -> Display
Mini-DP to VGA adapter -> VGA -> Display
Mini-DP to VGA adapter -> VGA to DVI adapter -> DVI -> Display
I know some of those configurations are plain ridiculous - but what really is the ridiculous thing is that the DisplayPort just +doesn't work+.
    Any ideas?
Could it be conflicting with the GTX 285?
I'm running all the latest updates and drivers for everything.
    Many thanks,
    Robert

The Dell and Sony Bravia work fine off the GTX 285, as well as the DVI port of the GT 120. It's purely the DisplayPort that refuses to play ball with anything.
Considering how DVI-D is just DVI-D, I don't know how there can be any discrepancies between manufactures to the end result of them just not working with each other. Madness.
I do have a Gefen DVI Switcher laying around, so I may as well use that off the DVI port of the GT 120, and switch between my third monitor (the Dell) and the Sony Bravia. I'd only use the Bravia when I'm not sitting at the Mac, so loosing a display temporarily isn't a problem.

  • Problems with InDesign CS5, Mac Pro & 5870

I am using InDesign CS5, OS X 10.7.3 (recent clean install) on a Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008 Mac Pro) with Apple's ATI 5870 card.
When working with a series of InDesign files today I noticed an odd problem. On some pages, PDF documents that were placed in the layout were not displaying on screen (just a white, blank space). Also, some JPEG files were appearing garbled, as if corrupted, in some of the same layouts.
My first thought was that the graphic files in question had somehow become corrupted, but after opening them that didn't seem to be the case. The InDesign files were from different sources and other than this problem, the machine is running without issues.
I don't know why I thought to try this but I replaced the 5870 with the original ATI 2600 and the problem went away.
Nothing else seems to have a problem with the 5870 including some graphic heavy games.
Has anyone else experienced symptons like this?
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Keith

Keith: What patch release of InDesign are you running? Hold down Cmd and select About InDesign.
Did you try resetting your preferences?
I don't believe that InDesign is GPU-accellerated, and you games probably are. So if there are issues with non-GPU graphics on your card, that could be it.
Certainly hardware failure of the video card is consistent with your narrative.

The GNS 5870 MFI is equipped with both Apple and NMEA protocol. The GPS receiver detects which device it should connect and automatically use the requested protocol. Additional the receiver is compatible with all current GPS software apps. • Mac Pro Graphic Card: ATI Radeon 2 x 5770 or 1 x 5870?

    HELP!
OK, So I've just ordered my new Mac Pro for work and here's the spec:
    MAC PRO
    Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 12GB (6X2GB)
    2 x ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB Graphic cards
    2 x 512GB Solid State Drives
    2 x HD Cinema screens
    One 18x SuperDrive

£8,950.00 (ouch!) being made up now, and delivered next week.
What I need to know is would it be better / faster going for 1 x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1 GB or stick with the 2 x HD 5770's graphc cards?
I popped into The Apple store in Regent Street, London  today and as a Joint Venture Business account holder I got to see someone straight away and no one could answer me the question which would be better or faster?
    1 x ATI Radeon HD 5870
    or the
    2 x ATI Radeon HD 5770
I work with extremely High Resoultion Image and design files, so it's imperitive to get the best.
I very much look forward to your valued opiions.

    Hi Bob,
    From Apple's page: http://www.apple.com/macpro/features/graphics.html
Give your graphics a turbo boost.
For even more graphics horsepower, upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory. An ideal choice for the most demanding applications, this card features a wider memory bus and higher-performance GPU, resulting in up to 70 percent faster performance compared with the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
You need the 5870 it is 70% faster, but more importantly you do not want the Apple monitors for critical photography applications.
I would STRONGLY suggest the NEC wide gamut calibration monitors. I use the 30" PA301WBKSV models, but if budget is constrained, they also make a 27" model for about 40% less.
The difference between a wide gamut and a regular (Apple) monitor is startling. You will save time and money due to the accuracy of the color causing fewer reprints. You literally will see colors you have never seen before on a screen.
At the very least, buy one of the wide gamut for adjustment work, and the lesser monitor for the non-critical pallette purposes.
Also, I would not buy either the RAM or SSDs from Apple, as there are better and cheaper alternatives out there. The 480GB Mercury EXTREME™ Pro 6G SSD are less money, double as fast as Apple and have a 5 year warranty.
I would also recommend more RAM, I use 48GB and never run into pageouts. You can buy the 48.0GB OWC Memory (3 x 16.0GB PC10600 DDR3 ECC 1333MHz 240 Pin) for a little more than you are paying Apple for 12GB, and this RAM is a lifetime warranty.
    Hope this helps

  • Better Graphics Card for Mac Pro !!

    Hi,
I planning to upgrade my Mac with the latest Mac Pro .. so I'd like just to know ..
Which is the better performance can I get it for 3D Graphics redraw .. and Open CL feature:
A Mac Pro, have (One) NVIDIA EVGA GeForce GTX 285 1GB GDDR3 memory (Here is the Card info )
Or Mac Pro, have (3x) NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB (Here is the Card info )
Or anyone can advice me another graphics card better than above for Mac Pro ?
(Except the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800)
    Thanks in Advance.

Two choices, either ATI 4870 can be bought as BTO for $200, or buy with GT120 and add GTX 285 $449 afterwards (not offered as BTO configuration at reduced price).
ATI seems favored by OS X and Apple applications but has to catch up in some areas, you know, like behind on OpenCL which will take time and work really (and Nvidia with CUDA, GPGPU and Physx has a leg up).
Or, sit on pins and needles and hope ATI 5870 or GTX 480 (bit, power guzzeler).
Apple likes to have basic card that doesn't need aux power so has to work @ 75W, and only has two 6-pin, the Fermi cards have 6 and 8-pin, unless revised models of Mac Pro have more options.
    Run Windows, the GTX shines.
There has never been support for SLI, and recently even CFX was disabled as well.

  • 64 Bit Photoshop CS4 running on 64 Bit WIndows 7 - does it work for anyone?

    Hi,
Is anyone running 64 BI Photoshop CS4 running on 64 Bit WIndows 7 without any problems?   Mine is totally unusable due to wild erratic brushes (clone, healing, eraser and more).  I have had zero success with Adobe.  Two weeks after posting a support incident, they finally responded with an answer that had absoutley nothing to do with my support ticket.  Unbelievable.  SO maybe I'll get another response in 2 more weeks.
I have another thread that explains my problems, but that is not the purpose of this post. For this I am interested in what configurations people are using with 64 bit CS4 and 64 bit Windows 7, especially, what graphics cards are you using in the situations where there are no problems.  I will even buy new graphics cards, because I have to.  I cannot work as is.
Is anyone using dual graphics cards successfully with 64 bit Win 7 and 64 bit CS4.  if so, what cards?
    Thanks

  • Help in buying PC or Mac?

I am looking at two computers. One is the Mac Pro with these specs:
    2.66ghz quad xeon
    3gb RAM
640 gb HD at 7200 rpm
    Nvidia GT 120 with 512mb
and the PC specs is this:
    2.66ghz quad i7
    6gb RAM
    1.5tb HD at 7200 rpm
    ATI Radeon 5870 with 1GB
    Frostchill Watercooling
Factory overclocking the CPU up to 3.9ghz
Both are the same price. PC give or take 100 dollars if I take it down to air cooling.
Which one is the best buy?

    Peter
If you have a 64 bit OS the motherboard will address up to 24 gigs I think. I have a 6gb RAM computer and have run P95 and memtest and it uses all the RAM.
You have a point about the graphics card. I do like to game. I like to put everything on max. Ambient Occlusion, AA, AF on and max. I also like to push the hardware by forcing AA to 32QX and clamping LOD bias.
It's not necessary to play games but I like the eye-candy.
As for liquid cooling, I've read lots of people use it. They use it for 100% OCs or more. I've heard of a i7 920 going at 5.0ghz from 2.66ghz on watercooling. Not exactly 100% but would still generate a lot of heat which can be solved with watercooling.
They said this much OC will bring the computer's lifespan to about 5 - 6 years but people who do this are the type that buy new hardware every 3 - 4 years anyway.
I still don't haven't done that much research on HD power but I think both of the HDs have 32mb cache connecting at 3gb/s. I don't know how much the Mac HD reads at but the PC reads at about 150 mb/s - 200mb/s. I could throw in $200 more to get a solid state or a velociraptor though.
The most use I have for my computer is video editing, gaming and I am taking an interest in music as well. Mostly gaming though. I use my laptops for school work.

  • Selecting color profile affects incorrect monitor

I have a three monitor setup on a Mac Pro consisting of two samsung 254 BW's and a Dell U2711. All three are connected to an ATI 5870 with one samsung being on mini displayport and the other on DVI.
The issue i'm seeing is that when I select a colour profile for either of the samsung's, the colour profile affects the one on mini display port only. So, selecting a different profile on the DVI connecte monitor doesn't change that monitor's profile BUT changes the other samsung monitor which is on mini display port.
    Anybody else seen this issue?

I'm having exactly the same problem as well. Sometimes, after sleep, it has the correct Gamma 2.2. profile and sometimes it doesn't. As soon as I click on Displays, in the System Prefs, it changes back to what it should be namely Gamma 2.2.
    Very frustrating.
I also have an external Apple Display connected and it also happens with this on random occasions!
