5D3 min. shutter speed hidden feature / bug

The ISO speed settings - Min. Shutter speed setting allows setting the shutter speed automatically based on focal length of the lens or manually to a certain value.
The on screen help indicates this setting only affects photo mode.
But when shooting video the camera will still use this setting to determine shutter speed.
This feature can be used to slow down shutter speed when using a long lens (on a tripod)
The hidden feature thus is to go back to photo mode and modify the setting to either get a shutter speed in video mode that corresponds to the focal length or equal to e.g. 1/60, which allows for a lower iso value.
The issue being this feature is very usable in video mode, but the camera hides this setting when in video mode, as it assumes this shouldn't affect video.
It would be great if this menu item could be enabled in video mode too for a future firmware release.
From wishlist point of view I think it would be great if the minimum shutter speed could be set to automatically slow down shutter speed when a lens with Image Stabilization in mode on are being used. A setting that allows to drop shutter speed by 1/2 or 1/4 with IS activated can be handheld and nicely interact with Auto ISO.

  • Raise Min Shutter Speed above 1/250th on 6D?

    Hi All,
I just upgraded from the 20D to the 6D, and wanted to know, if its possible to set the min shutter speed above 1/250th of a sec on the 6D? If so, how? I wanted to know if I can set it above 1/640th or higher.
    Thanks,

    mlong219 wrote:
    Hi Skirball,
You are correct! The reason why I want it near 1/800 is because I plan on shooting indoor sports with no flash, for the first time with this camera, and wanted to see if I can manually set my shutter to 1/1000th of sec as a min, and have my ISO set to auto. I normaly shoot in Manual mode.
I'd just use manual then, with Auto ISO.  Using Av won't offer much benefit, unless you're shooting in a highly dynamic lighting situation, or you really need to fine tune with exposure compensation.  Set your aperature and minimum acceptable shutter speed and just keep an eye on your ISO.  If it's getting below 400 or so then bump your shutter up.
I never used auto ISO until I got a 6D.  But the range of acceptible ISO is so good that it gives me a wide enough range for an "auto" experience.  My only complaint is that there isn't an exposure compensation for auto ISO in manual.

  • Suggestion - 5D3 minimum shutter speed for auto ISO

Hi, I would like to make a suggestion to Canon on the 5D3 camera, with regard to the minimum shutter speed for auto ISO. Currently I find that most of the selectable shutter speeds are on the low side (mostly below 1/125), and this may not be useful for handheld photography, or for fast moving subjects. I would like to suggest the following:
    - More minimum shutter speed settings faster than 1/125 including in-between speeds e.g. 1/160 (between 1/125 and 1/250)
    - Automatic shutter speed based on a multiple of lens focal length e.g. 2x lens focal length (for both prime and zoom lenses)
I hope that Canon can come up with an updated firmware that does this. Thanks.

Good idea, you can add it to the thread "Firmware Update Wishlist", and "Canon dSLR Wish List?" because a proper, configurable, flexible auto ISO is much needed and would beneficiate all cameras, not only 5D3.
I am not sure what Magic Lantern can give you on that issue, but you can take a look at their page.
Now, as a short term solution, on 1D4 I have put the cfns for 'shutter speed range' and 'iso speed range' in MyMenu, and when I need I change the max ISO (usually 1600) and a min shutter seepd (depends on lens and subject) on the fly. Not very practical (many button push needed), but it works.
    I hope that helps

  • Canon 5D3 Feature Request / Wish -- Manual exposure auto shutter speed toggle

I've been using Canon gear the last six years & I don't know if this is currently possible in any camera body. If not, I believe it would prove highly helpful for working professionals.
When working in time-sensitive situations, I find myself frequently forced to use Av mode when I would prefer to remain in Manual exposure. Additionally, I find myself slowed down within Manual exposure mode when moving between inddor and outdoor light and/or other situations of dramatic ambient light fluctuation.
My wish would be for a menu assignment function for the "multi-function" button (next to the shutter release). Pressing the button while in M exposure mode would then set the shutter speed (like in Av mode--and another option could emulate Tv mode), and releasing the button would resume normal M exposure mode usage.
Personally, this is my biggest wish for the 5D3, and I would LOVE to see it implemented. (My second wish would be for the flash exposure lock to set the exposure of Flashes which are otherwise set to manual flash exposure, but that's another story).
    Thanks,
    Bert

    Nope. That's a 1D X feature.

  • Displaying Shutter Speed in the New Format

I've looked at all the menus (Preferences, Loupe/Grid View, etc) and searched the forum, but I can't seem to find how to display the shutter speed (and I believe F stop as well) in the alternative format (ie if displaying "1/200" the display will render "1/200" in a smaller font that is more of a traditional photographic way to view.)
    Any help appreciated!

If using a Mac you'll find that the Preference labelled Typographic Fractions does what you appear to be seeking (see screenshot). I can't recall if Windows supports this particular feature, but it does have a font smoothing option (same dialog) that "might" help.

  • Feedback about glitches, misbehaviors errors, missing features, bugs

I couldn't find a thread where I could submit feedback about glitches, misbehaviors errors, missing features, bugs (and things of that nature) encountered when using Edge and needed a place where I could collect them writing about them as they happen and before I forget.
This is not a whishlist, rather simply a place where I'd like to send feedback and hopefully get clarifications on something that may be a non working feature, erratic behavior or a bug.
That said here is the first one of them:
    Where: Edge Animate > Library>Assets
What: Impossible to remove from the list the folder and/or assets
    When: Always
How: After adding asset (add an image to the composition) remove the image from the composition. Then if you would like to remove that asset, there isn't an option to do so. The contextual menu only offer one choice "Reveal in Finder" (on a Mac) which is basically reading the path of the asset and opening the containing folder for the selected asset.
Only removing the file or folder from the location (which Edge has stored as a path) would yield a removal from the list of the Library>Asset The item will be removed from the list when, upon right clicking and selecting "Reveal in Finder" Edge will not find the asset and ask the user if they want to reload the content of that list which basically will refresh the pointers and if the asset won't be found then the entry for it will be removed from the list. (Quite a cumbersome hoop-jumping just to remove an asset from the list)
Why: Users wanting to manage and update the content of the Assets may want to see some listed but may want to ignore other entries that have been replaced with different assets, but they want to keep the files within the folder where they were originally placed.
For instance adding images 001.jpg through 100.jpg  and later removing all odd images or even ones from the composition, the Library will still list them in the assets unless removed from that folder "physically" and placing them somewhere else doing an "update" in the library pane later as explained above. Leaving the unused assets in the list when not necessary adds to clutter and having to perform a manual workaround to update the UI isn't very efficient
(a minor missing feature... not a feature request to start this feedback thread)
Hope this helps keep track of issues, but if there's a better way/system, will be glad to use that instead.
    Cheers!

Bug Reporting (is there anywhere users can provide feedback about bugs/program's glitches?)
Not knowing where to list what would appear to be bugs/glitches I'll keep adding them here and hopefully someone at the Edge Team will look into it eventually as time allows
Issue: Min W in Symbols' stage property won't stick to percentage.
    To reproduce behavior:
    - Create symbol,
    - Double click to edit created symbol,
    - When in Symbol Edit mode, click on the stage (once),
    - Edit the Min W of the symbol's stage properties on the left "Properties" panel,
    - Without changing the value (which will be zero), toggle px to percentage,
    - Save your project,
...et voilà by magic the property you just toggled reverts itself to px
(To make it stick apparently it's necessary to change the value in the text field then toggle px to % and it will be properly kept when saving.)
side note: I don't know if that's something that can be a factor in causing the glitch, but each time a project is saved and a the user is "inside" a symbol's stage, the values in the properties panel will display the main stage properties and then will go load again the properties of the symbol being edited.
    Cheers!

  • Motion Blur caused by Shutter Speed 50?!

    Hi All,
I'm a GH2 user. Shoot in 50i-50ss-5.6f. I realized that is an effect such like "Motion Blur" which caused by the low shutter speed as I mentioned (50ss). Search around some forum, it is quite common. In fact, it looks not really comfortable to me! How do you solve this issue or perhaps reducing/smoothen the motion blur issue?
Picture like focus clear & sharp while talent do not move to left or right. Once his/her head move to left or right, there is motion blur after it. In fact, facused while talent did not move his/her head then.
    Thanks!

    David,
Thanks for the prompt reply and confirmation.
Perhaps, 1/50 producing slow shutter speed result--motion blur? It just like a man walk from left to right in front of my cam, and the man will be blur in motion during the recording. It'll only stay focused while the man stop and stand still. Double up the shutter speed will helps this? like 1/100? Might need your opinion.
Some friends ask me "are you shooting a speedy subject?". Not really that speed or fast. Just like what i've mention above, perhaps just walking...turn around...hand up...those might blur in 1/50 shutter speed with fully Continuos Focus Function.
I'm just curious, how could those GH2 friends shooting a Dance Genre Music of MV? They are dancing, moving fast enough...but, surprise, MV is just sharp and stay focused on every person! What do you say?
Is those below's MV consider pretty smooth? Can you tell what's the shutter speed on those? Continuos Focus + Manual Focus in use?
Thanks for now and hear from you soon! Apprciate to your precious time to answer

  • Off Topic: Hidden Features of Java

    Happy Friday everyone,
I stumbled upon this conversation on Stack Overflow last night about "hidden" features of Java. Although I knew about most of them (mostly learned from reading posts here in the past few months), thinking about less-often used features of the language is a fun refresher (at least for me).
Can anybody think of any more "hidden" features of Java? Or just something interesting that not many people are familiar with?

Note that the ordering maintained by a set (whether or not an explicit comparator is provided) must be consistent with equals if it is to correctly implement the Set interface. It bugs me because it's not an explicit requirement of Comparable or Comparable. Therefore, if I did:
    set.add("Hello");
System.out.println(set.contains("World"));I would expect false to be printed (in other words, like HashSet, I would expect it to do a final equals() to make sure). But it's not.
However, in your example, it's easy to see why TreeSet could not possibly allow that. If you added 2 Objects that were comparatively equal, it would be impossible to traverse the tree to find anything.

  • Slow motion and frame rate and shutter speed

I have two cameras that record 60i and three that use 30p. Neither of the 60i cameras has a 30p option (one has a pf30).  If I understand how FCPx handles this, if I drop both frame rates into a project, I get 30p out, correct?  In effect de-interlacing the 60i footage to 30p. Is it best to import the 30p footage first to set that frame rate so that the 60i gets rendered to 30p?
We're producing a fishing DVD so good quality motion footage is important. This is an instructional DVD so I will be using some retiming to slow footage down to illustrate key points in the instruction.
I've read a lot of stuff on 1080i 60i vs. pf30 vs.30p vs. 24fps and benefits of using 720p vs. 1080i.  Also looked at information on slow vs. fast shutter speeds.
So, the bottom line to get the best motion results for the DVD, I should be shooting at best bit rate possible, use 1080i 60i or 30p depending on the camera and let FCPx set everything to 30p.  Correct?

For the 1080/60i media, it is best to have FCPX conform it to 30p (29.97p). [30p is a real timing: 30 exact frames per second, but it is not broadcast compliant. 29.97 is quite often simply referred to as 30, just for simplicity and/or laziness. The final decision for which to use rests with you. Also note, like "30 fps", 60 more often refers to 59.94 fps... for the same reasons.]
As for your target being DVD: DVD is always 480 lines whether it is anamorphic (16:9) or standard 4:3. If you would like to have "enhanced" slow motion, my recommendation would be to shoot in 720/60p (which is genuinely progressive "60" frames per second) and will give a slightly better edge on slow motion effects (retiming). That said, FCPX retiming is usually quite good no matter what the frame rate (frame blending recommended over optical flow [which tends to give a "morphing" effect when pushed too far].)  1280x720 frame size will give you plenty of downsampling resolution for DVD as well.  [I *believe* that FCPX will use all of the 60fps available from the original video in retiming, even if the frame rate of the project is slower than the original media; so, 720/60p conformed to a 30p project and retimed to 50% will use every frame of the 60p slowed down by half... (somebody correct me if I'm wrong!)]
Best bitrate is also an important feature, but that is not due to the choice of format as much as that provided by the camera itself. Bitrates out of the camera may be relative to the frame size (they are in my consumer camcorders). A common consumer grade camcorder will top out at a bitrate (for 1080) somewhere between 17.5 and 22.5 Mbps, whereas an HD capable DSLR will usually top out at (easily) *twice* as much (45Mbps average from my Canon T4i) or more. Furthermore, the DVD standard imposes framerate restrictions (max is somewhere between 5 and  8Mbps -- the software that creates your DVDs will usually transcode for best bitrate, so not something you really need to bother with - just set the transcoder to best possible quality and provide it with the best quality video that's reasonable.) Whichever camera provides the highest bitrate should be your "main" camera.
As you may have discovered: another factor for a quality video regardless of camera is shutter speed. If you set the shutter speed too high (faster than twice the frame rate) then you will have "stuttering" issues (there will be "gaps" from still frame to still frame). Keep the shutter speed at the same or no more than twice the frame rate: e.g., for 1080/30p (target) the shutter speed should never be more than 1/60th of a second (I'll use 1/30th, 1/40th, or 1/50th usually). I haven't shot a lot of 720/60p, but I think I would still keep the shutter speed at between 1/60th and 1/120th exclusively [that is -- I wouldn't go as high as 1/120th or greater... but that's me... you should experiment for best results for you.  If this creates exposure issues, then consider neutral density filters or circular polarizing filters to help bring scenes into exposure range (via aperture or iso or both.)
    HTH
Good luck! Have a good shoot!

  • 6D shutter speed limitation

    Dear all,
I am a new member but in the same time an old Canon owner.
I am thinking of an upgrade and these days I've read and watched some reviews, pro and cons, etc about Canon products and specially the battle between 5D Mk2 vs.6D.
Now, depending of how anyone will use the 6D camera there are some good but also some weak points.
At this moment for me this is the main reason that keeps me insecure in buying the 6D .
I really found this as a joke because my old 350D have 1/4000 max shutter speed and on the other hand 7D and even 60Da,  60D (all these below a full frame camera) have higher value (1/8000 max shutter speed).
Helping me to choose the right product , I just wanted to know if  this is a truly hardware shutter limitation or there will be a firmare update in the future in order to unlock the higher value .
In my humble opinion after so many years of research and development , you simply can't downgrade a product in order to fit in the market unless there are no reliable technical explanations .
It will be great if we all new potential buyers will receive a positive answer from a Canon Product manager for example because if you do some ggl search you'll find this a commonly discussed subject about the 6D.
    Thank you,

... you cannot compare the 6d to aps-c because the larger full-frame shutter has to move a larger distance, that's also the reason why the cheaper 60d and so on have 1/250s x-sync and even the 5d3 only has 1/200s (1dx 1/250s, though that is an embarrassment because the competition is better and the original 1d managed 1/500 x-sync and 1/16000 shutter).
Though concerning the 6d I guess the spec limitations are motivated by marketing and keeping the 5d3 on top, thus at least a higher x-sync might very well be enabled by firmware if Canon would want to.

  • 6D shutter speed changes?????

Hi everyone, I am new here and if this question has been asked previously please point me to the post. I did browse through the previous questions but did not see this particular problem.
My probles lies with my 6D I shoot automobile racing with a 70-200 2.8 and a 580EXII flash, A couple weeks back during the night I was shooting manual mode and I noticed that my shutter speed kept changing on it's own, so I switched to TV mode and it worked fine for one week, but I noticed last night it started doing the same thing. I am setting my speed at 400 and repeatedly it would change to 200 or even lower, thus making my shots overexposed. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening??

I noticed the same thing when I used to have and use a 5D, 5D Mk II and my 7D.  But since I went all 1 series I have not had it happen since.  I still believe it is the knobs moving, rubbing, or something else moving them.
This was a big concern with the pros so Canon changed the way a 5D Mk III works so it can not move accidently.
The shutter wheel doesn't work any differently on a 5D3. It's the mode dial that now can't be turned accidentally.

  • Auto Lighting Optimizer - Changes shutter speed in manual?

Hi, I have a question regarding ALO. I recently enabled it on my 1DX and have since noticed my shutter speed will automatically change slightly once in awhile (while shooting in manual with auto ISO.) For example: I set my shutter speed to1/60 and it will occassionally drop to 1/50 and then jump back to 1/60. I've checked the instructions but couldn't find anything regarding this. It only happens with ALO enabled.
    Cheers

Doh...you're right no safety shift in M mode...my bad...
I have no clue...I don't use ALO.  I don't have the 1DX but on my 5DIII in M mode, I could've sworn I've seen the shutter speed flutter a few times...that's why I was so sure it was the safety shift feature...I only confirmed today that there's not supposed to be a safety shift in M.
I'll have to watch for this again...it might be something else because I don't use ALO.

  • What is this hidden "feature" in mobile Safari for and how can I use it?

OK, one day, like any geek would, I was in the car messing with my iPod touch. I was playing in Safari, typing in email addresses and such to get the exciting "WARNING - PHISHING SITE" screen. So I then tried typing "/" into the address bar, and when I hit "go", something interesting happened. The "/" changed to "file:///", and it tried to load it, but then popped up with an error message that said "This page could not be opened because it is a local file". Now I'm not new to the "file:///" thing, and I've used it to access folders using Chrome that Explorer wasn't showing for some reason. So, what if that tag used for? Obviously Apple has a use for it somehow since they included a little shortcut to get to it. I'll post some screenshots below so you can see what everything looks like:
So if this happens to have any use at all, I'd like to know about it!
I also asked this question over here:  http://lockergnome.net/questions/157444/what-is-this-hidden-feature-in-mobile-sa fari-for-and-how-can-i-use-it

That is a shortcut for opening a file locally stored on the iPod. This is not really useful since iOS does not permit such access to its file sustem.
