5G 60G won't power off...will reset wipe the memory?

The subject header says it all. If I do the hold slider, menu button reset thing, will it wipe the memory?
Thanks.
Mitch

So my music will be intact?
Sorry for the repetitive nature of my question but I don't want to get burned since some of my stuff isn't on my computer any more.
Thanks!

  • IPod screen illuminates but no image; iPod won't power off

iPod hard drive whirrs and screen illuminates, but no image (text or other) appears. iPod won't power off. iPod is recognized by iTunes only when in disk mode. Multiple restores were useless in restoring the screen function. Tools such as Disk Utility and Disk Warrior verified the directories were satisfactory. Can't locate a hardware diagnostic tool that can diagnose an iPod; and because the screen is malfunctioning, I can't run the iPod's built-in diagnostic routines.
Any solutions, or is this iPod destined for the repair shop?

If your iPod will not power off, unplug it from any power supply and wait for it to run the battery down completely. Then it will power off simply because there is not enough power to keep it running. (It may take 24 hours to do this.) Once this has happened, plug the iPod back into your computer. After about 30 minutes, you should see the "Please wait, very low battery" message. After a while longer, the iPod will have enough power and should reset itself. If not, re-post, but see below.
At the bottom of your post you state that you have a 30GB video iPod. In that case, if you need to re-post, it would be better in the 5th generation iPod forum, (either 5th generation or 5th gen late - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 for more information) as there will be posts from owners of the same model as you have, and with the same problems.

  • Palm Tungsten E2 won't power off

This device has just started to power on again seconds after I turn it off--it remains on indefinitely and runs the battery down!  On the Systems > Preferences > Power, it is set to "Auto-off after 2 minutes".  What else can I do?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Try a soft reset by pressing the reset button on the back and see if that may resolve the issue. If it doesn't, you will need to hard reset to put the E2 back to factory settings. this usually corrects any OS corruption. Before the hard reset, you will need to hotsync to backup your data to your PC. After the hotsync and verifying all data is correct in Palm Desktop, hard reset the E2. Before hotsyncing your data back onto the E2 make sure the issue is resolved on the HH and it will power off correctly. Change the hotsync conduits to desktop overwrites handheld and sync.

  • Tecra Won't Power Off

Problem,  Shut downj gets as far as Windows is shutting down, period.  Have to remove battery to shut down!  Have used system restore t9o njo avail.  Help!

You can press and hold the power button for ten seconds to force it to turn off.
When it won't power off it is usually a software issue.  If system restore didn't work, you could try the full factory restore from the recovery discs.
If you don't want to do that, try safe mode and make sure that it shuts down from then use msconfig to remove start up items to see what is causing it.

  • IPod touch (1st gen) audio pauses, won't power off, invisible in iTunes

For about a week now, my iPod touch (1st generation, iOS 3.1.3) has been acting funny. When I plug it in to my MacBook (OS X 10.6.5), iTunes (10.1, 54) does not recognize the device, the wireless signal indicator does not show at all, the battery meter is incorrect, the audio pauses randomly, and I cannot turn off the device (by holding down the sleep button for 10 seconds and then sliding the "Slide to power off" control). I am able to force a power off by holding down the sleep button and the home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. After a manual power down, things are normal again, but the iPod touch reverts to the same weirdness after a few hours. Any ideas?

Ever since I uninstalled the TGI Black Friday app (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tgi-black-friday/id335329737?mt=8), things are back to normal now. Very strange.

  • IPad won't power off and tends to spontaneously reboot

When I try to power off my iPad (pressing the sleep button then sliding the "slide to power off" slider), it displays the wait progress indicator, goes black just briefly, then the silver Apple boot up logo appears as the device reboots which results in the device remaining on.
Worse yet, the device tends to frequently spontaneously reboot, often when the home screen is displayed and not performing any user operation.
I really don't want to restore the iPad as this results in metadata loss for thousands of audio files (Apple really needs to address this inadequacy and provide a Time Machine back up option for us users who choose to manually manage files on iOS). Is a device restore my only recourse?

It sounds like something is crashing your iPad resulting in this spontaneous reboot. Without knowing what you're running or if you've done anything unusual to your iPad, it's hard to say. There is a remote possibility that it's hardware related, but I would go the software route first. The only way to find the culprit, without completely restoring (which I would actually recommend here) is to one by one delete program apps and see if the problem ceases.
If you completely restore and the problem disappears, then it was software related. If you backed up your iPad before restoring, you should be able to restore it from the backup thus retaining any data you had stored previously. Of course, this would also reinstall the offending app that was causing this behavior in the first place, but at least you'd know it is software and not hardware related which obviates a visit to your local Apple Store.

Sorry about the long title.....its my first post.
My kid just got a brand new iPod 5th generation (today from Santa) and it won't power up or charge. The only response is when I connect the USB and press the power button or front button the Battery appears with red line on left and lightning symbol below. There is no other response at all no matter what I do, including holding both buttons down for extended period.  My other kid got one and it works perfectly.....I have interchanged usb cables ports etc. but still no response....I would really appreciate any help.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem with the iPod. This is because as you said the same cable works with another iPod.

The Find my iPhone service option is given to you when you first set up the device. If you just reset it, you may have been given that option. So, in other words, the service may have been enabled even if you didn't realize it. You can then go to www.icloud.com and click on Find my iPhone, and have it play a sound. Or, you can use the Find my iPhone app on your mom's iPhone, but the service would still need to be turned on on your iPod.
Unlike Compukid said, Apple will not assist in locating a lost device without the Find my iPhone service.
I found that out 2 years ago, it's just that I thought Apple might have changed that.

  • Is power off and on again the same as 'reboting' iPhone?

To reboot the iPhone due to playing a big game or whatever other reason - To refresh lets say.
Is turning the power off and on again the exact same thing as holding down power and the home key together?
    Is there really any difference?
    -Frankie

This is what I tell everyone.
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
    A reset/reboot is:
    Go to Home Screen
    Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
    Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
    Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.
You may also wish to read this tread about reboots and odd application behavior.

  • Security passlock should impose on power off system because once the iphone is lost and the theft could not power off the iphone easily thus we still get a chance to locate our iphone

As we all concern about our iphone location once it is not within our capability to reach. "Find my iphone" is a very good features for finding lost phone but once the iphone is being power off by the third party, the features would render useless. Therefore, I strongly suggest the passlock system should be intact together with the power off system. We spend a lot of time to unlock our screen for the security purpose why not the power off button? It would not that as much as time for us to power off but it increase the security purpose. Thank you

  • 5th Gen 60G Won't Power Down-NO SLEEP

My 5th gen 60g's are not powering down, the backlight will go off, but they will NOT power down! I've reset, re-installed and used factory defaults, but they still drain down the battery because they WON"T SHUT OFF

I'm looking into the same problem. A friend has a 5G 30GB video that's having insomnia. I've restored it a couple of times using itunes 8.0.1, and the firmware is version 1.3.
It's got a few problems. One is that it won't go to sleep by itself at all. If I enable the sleep menu option and select it, it "sorta tries to" go to sleep - i.e. the clickwheel stops responding but the screen stays on (if the backlight is set to "always on" then that also stays on). The clickwheel stops responding to swizzling until I press a button.
Also, when I do a reset (hold down center/menu buttons) it forgets all the menu and clickwheel settings when it reboots and even asks me to choose the language again. I believe this only started happening in the last couple of weeks. I don't know if a firmware upgrade triggered it.
It's chewing up the battery very quickly the way it is. I've loaned the owner my old 20GB photo for the time being and this one will sit on a charger until a solution appears
I hope someone at apple spots this and writes a patch!
    Thanks
    Matt.

  • TS1702 iPad won't power off - dialogue box won't disappear

Hi, there is a dialogue box saying 'Your rental movie has expired' and it's asking me to press ok.  I press ok but nothing happens.  Nothing else works because the dialogue box just stays there.  Troubleshooting recommends to power of the iPad, but it won't let me use the slide button to power off - because the dialogue box overrides it.  Any advice?  Thanks!

Have you tried a soft reset...hold both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears in the center of the screen and the unit restarts.
