5G iPod, Charges only when connectec to Mac

My subject pretty much describes it all. After months of working perfectly, all of a sudden I noticed my iPod wasn't charging with my car adapter.
I bought a new adapter, and still no luck. Won't even just power the iPod, it'll go from the charging screen, load, show my library, and then alert me that there's not enough power remaining. What's more, my sister's iPod charges just fine with either of my adapters. Her adapter, however, doesn't work with my iPod.
Fine, so it's definately something with my iPod--but why does it charge when it's connected to the computer? That's what's weird. I even took the USB connector out to my newly-purchased FM Modulator with a USB input for charging and listening-- just like the dock connector, it doesn't do a thing.
Anyone have any insight before I just try reformatting the stupid thing?

Hello MacRez,
I hope that you have a backup for your iPod, iPod not being recongnized is a common error, I am not an expert but I believe that it happens more often with connecting with a PC rather than a Mac. If you are not going to connect with a PC in the future, it is better for you to restore the iPod updater in Mac version. At this stage I understand that your Ipod cnat be recongnized, however, you can try to put it in Disk Mode, and connect with your Mac, and hope that you wil be able to see your ipod's icon on your desktop. Then do a format (erase) with Disk Utility followed by a restore of the latest iPod updater.

  • What does it mean if my ipod charges only when its off

ok my ipod charges only when its off , ex.i plug my charger in while its on but it doesnt charge at all, not even if i put it in the pc  usb ports. However wheni put the chargerr in the ipod and turn it off, then come back an hour later or so it is charged up.Anybody knows what does it mean when it does that.keep in mind the ipod doesnt charge whille its on.

It means that when your ipad is running with your charger connected, it is using about as much electrical energy as your charger is supplying to your battery.  When your ipad is shut down there are no apps or programs running so all of the charger's output is devoted to recharging the battery.  Your ipod battery may be running down a bit because of age, or you could possibly have too many apps running at the same time.  Running gamming applications uses quite a bit of power.  I'm making the assumption that your charger is functioning properly.  Also, charging via the USB port on your computer is not as efficient as using your wall charger since the charging current provided by the computer usb port is a bit less than the wall charger.  If you use an iPad wall charger it will provide more charging current and therefor would be more effective.

  • 6 GB iPod Mini discharges when plugged into Mac Mini via USB 2.0 hub

I have a 6 GB iPod Mini and when i connect it to my computer, instead of charging, it discharges. The iPod is connected to a self powered USB 2.0 hub. Does anybody have any ideas of what to do. I need a hub because the Mac Mini only has 2 USB ports and the keyboard and mouse don't work through the hub (well the keyboard it self does but the hub doesn't which the Mighty Mouse is plugged into)
    Thanks

When i say self powered i mean that it has an external power supply (my hub it has two lights, when it is connected to USB and has p\s connected and plugged in a light lights up that has the word "Self" next to it, when it is connected just to USB it has a light that lights up with the word "Bus" next to it.) I am sorry if i confused you (or if i confused myself). About the firewire thing, i am planning to get the next normal iPod Apple releases but the current ones dont support firewire so the new one probably wont either, so i will be in the same boat as i am now when i get a new one.

  • Do I get better results/ keeping the battery's life longer by charging only when it comes to 5-10% or should I let it empty and then charge it? Someone told me also to turn it off while I charge it... So help what is the best way to keep long life battery

I got the new iPad on June 2012 and I wish to keep the long life of the battery as much as I can. I always and only use the cable that comes with the product and never charge it through computer.
    Should I:
    1) wait till baterry is completely empty, pratectly dead and then charge it?
    2) charge it when it reach 5%-10%.
    3) turn off the iPad when I charge the battery?
    Thank you apple support :)

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • IPOD charges shortly when hooked to USB port

I have a 30g color screen IPOD, when I connect it to my PC through the USB port it charges while it updates then stops charging and goes back to the menu on the IPOD's screen. I have tried the 5 R's with no luck, the only way I can get it to charge fully is to restore the IPOD to original settings and this keeps it charging while updating my many songs. Any suggestions? Please HELP!

  • My Ipod charges only at the store, but not at home or anywhere else!

I've just got a Ipod 30Gb, and usually I put it to charge on my computer before the battery is completely off, but I forgot to do it and now it is completely empty. I tried to charge it at home, but my computers don't recognize my Ipod, so I took it to the store, they tried with their Power adapter and it worked. I bought an adapter for me, but when I got home, it still didn't work. I tried at work and it did'nt charge either, so I returned to the store, and they tried with their adapter, and it worked again, but not with any other new adapter they opened to test. They have to old model, the big one...does anyone have any idea of what could I do before being obliged to send my Ipod for repair? I'm sure it's not broken...

Not sure what you mean about "big old" charger working and newer ones not. It is possible that the battery has run down too low to revive by itself or that the iPod has crashed and won't respond.
Try leaving it for 24-30 hours in a cool place and try again with the AC charger and a known good cable.

  • External Hard Drive "read only" when connected to mac.

    Hi
I have a Lacie external hard drive, formatted FAT, which has always worked fine on our macbook pro until the macs internal drive crashed and had to be replaced. now, when i connect the lacie i can access everything, but cannot move it around or add new folders, etc. under permissions it says "read only" how do i change this? when i connect to a pc it works normal.
the macs software is OS X Version 10.5.8.
im sure that its a really simple answer but i dont know enough about mac to find it...

NTFS is read only on OS X. there are drivers to make it writable, so you could try to get those to work or you can copy the data off & reformat to FAT 32.

  • Ipod connect only when reboot

    Hi there,
I have this kind of problem: I installed the last itunes and I have a Video 60gb. When I start the pc and I connect my Ipod there is no problem, I sync without problem. I disconnect my ipod and when I connect again the ipod itunes won't see the ipod. I have to reboot and the connection work. Also when I try to enable the disk option, itunes answers that there were an error syinching. I reinstalled the firmware but nothing changed.

I have changed my own battery on both the video and nano. There are places where you can buy a new battery and replace it. On the video there is a small ribbon cable that attaches the battery. It has a small clip that holds the ribbon cable in and there is a chance that it was not installed properly and that it might have slipped out. Here go under this site and look at their tutorials on battery replacement and follow that. If it is a battery conn you are golden, if not I would try replacing the battery. The bennie of doing that is you get a higher cap battery. But be aware that the minute you open the case your warranty is voided. Here is the site. Hope this solves it for you. But be aware that it could be a problem with the charging circuit and that would mimic a bad battery. But worth a try.

  • My Ipod touch 2nd gen will not sync for some reason to itunes. I've tried almost every possible solution I can find on the internet. The ipod charges fine when connected and Windows also recognizes it as a device but itunes refuses to. What should I do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the reply. Your answer crossed my mind but I havent downloaded songs in a while so I never paid attention to whether it was syncing or not. However, in my sync history I see that it successfully synced 3 months ago....

  • Vast Apple Conspiracy! (iPod Not Working When Formatted for Windows)

Alright, I know this isn't the place to make the claim of an Apple conspiracy, but as a mac user who proudly has an apple sticker on his car who has experienced the events below first hand - I feel there is only one explanation one can come to.
    VAST APPLE CONSPIRACY!
Alright, my friend has a 30GB 5G iPod and runs windows. I own a MacBook that has OSX 10.4.7 and Windows. He has had problems in the past with his computer, but never with his iPod until the 1.2 update rolled out with iTunes 7. Now after one move of the cursor or change of menu the screen turns into a bunch of pixels reminiscent of a television set to static. Only it makes no noise and never moves, it just sits with the backlight on until it dies, or until you hold the menu and center buttons, then it restarts and does the same thing.
So being the good nerdy friend that I am I offer to take it home and reformat it on my Mac then on Windows to see if maybe that helps (thinking something is up with his computer again). It starts out promising enough, because I was able to reformat it for Macintosh load on music, videos and games play them all and shut it down properly.
So I switch to Windows XP and reformat it for Windows in iTunes 7 and the same problem starts up again!
Now aside from a vast Apple conspiracy, does anyone have any suggestions, perhaps others are experiencing this problem? Keep in mind the iPod worked fine when formatted for Mac and it is highly unlikely two Windows computers have the exact same flaw (especially on mine that goes almost unused and has virus and spyware protection).
    -Jeremy K.
MacBook 2GHz Intel Core Duo   Windows XP

    Ummm
the APPLE software is less than a month old. I am sure it was tested extensively on APPLE computers before release. Due to apple's configurations there are only a few systems it had to be tested on.
Now on windows... how many of thousands of geeks out there build their own machines with different graphics, audio, usb pci cards etc etc... Impossible for apple to test it out as extensively on win xp...
I imagine in 2 - 3 months we will have itunes 7.0.2 or 7.0.3 that addresses many of the issues windows users are having. That's how it was with itunes 6, this is not a new phenomenon by any means.

My second problem is that an old ipod charger only works with ipod 5gen and ipod nano 2gen. but not with my ipod nano 3gen. Is there anything wrong with it?

  • Can recharge iPhone only when turned off

    Hi
I'm using iPhone 4 iOS 6.1, and today I found out that I can't charge my iPhone when it's turned on. It charges only when it's turned off.
Is there any way to fix this or it is hardware problem and I have to take my iPhone to a fixing lab?
    Thank you

    Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.
