5g video ipod owners: Don't upgrade to iTunes 7.0 (or 1.2)

If your ipod (mine is a 5th. gen 60g version), is working well, (as mine was...), then, by all means, do NOT update to iTunes 7.0, (or the iPod to 1.2)
The iTunes update seems to be o.k., but the 1.2 iPod updater totaly messed up my pod!
Cannot select menu items, if I try, the iPod freezes. Try to play a song or playlist, it freezes. (It maybe will play one song first, but usually, it just locks up.
...resets don't fix it, restoring doesn't work either.
My iPod is now a very expensive paperweight. ;-(
Cheers, Todd K.

Update: Over the last two days I have tried everything I have been able to find on possible solutions to this problem, with nothing but frustration resulting.
(none of the possible sugestions came from Apple Support.)
The numbers of users having problems seem to be staggering, based on the number of posts in this forum alone. (I wonder how many never even get here.)
It's time for Walter Mossberg at the New York Times recieved a copy of all these posts.
I don't have a problem with the fact that this has happened, (althought I wonder how much beta testing was actually done.), but the lack of any kind of acknowledgement from anyone at Apple is disturbing, at best.
It's time to step up, Apple, these aren't some scratches we are dealing with here, this time.
I don't mind paying a premium for these typs of products, as Apple usually does a great job, worth the extra cash. But, they are "dropping the ball" on this one.
Please just acknowlege our problem, our pain, let us know you care and are working on a solution.
Cheers, Todd K.

  • Don't Upgrade To iTunes 7.0

Based on my personal experience, and in view of the many 7.0 upgrade problems posted on this forum (mostly unresolved), I would strongly recommend against upgrading to iTunes 7.0 if you are running OS10.3 or 10.2. I have no experience with OS10.4.
Also, my Library/Music/iTunes/Plugins folder is empty, so I can't try the fix suggested by some replies.
Here's what happened to me after upgrading in OS10.3.9:
    1. All my playlists are now empty. The tunes are still in the Users/Music/iTunes folder, but the 7.0 installer did not transfer them.
    2. Attempting to import my music to the new version does not work because all the files are greyed out and can't be selected for import.
    3. Drag and drop to the iTunes icon in the dock no longer works.
    4. Even dragging each song's icon individually to the open iTunes window only works in some cases, and then I have to re-sort them into the playlists I had made. Hassle!
If you have already installed 7.0, and have your OS10.3 or 10.2 install CD, I would recommend using Pacifist from http://www.charlessoft.com/ to reinstall the older version - after trashing the 7.0 upgrade.
I can't imagine how iTunes 7.0 got released by Apple in its present state of disarray. It should have at most been designated a beta release (and I've seen much better betas).
Hopefully, someone at Apple will take notice of all the 7.0 problems aired on this forum and do something about it.
Until then, I'm hiding my Apple T-shirt in the back of the closet.

Oh! That's why my playlists are all empty! Does Apple care at all (no, I am sure they don't) how many many hours I have put into creating my playlists? Now they're all gone.
I posted on another thread about how the new version is great (except for that problem) and except for the fact that it has deleted everything off my iPod and rendered it unusable because iTunes crashes every time I attempt to sync (or just attach the iPod in order to fix my settings, which were all undone by this so-called upgrade.)
Thanks a lot, Apple! I'm waiting patiently for a resolution/patch for this, but will my playlists ever be restored? It's depressing knowing that they really won't.

  • Adding another iPod - can I avoid upgrading to iTunes 6?

My wife has a Mini and we are using iTunes 4.90.17 + iPod Updater 2006-06-26 + QT 6.52 on a XP Pro/SP2 machine with NIS 2005. The Mini is set for manual control and everything works fine right now.
I just got a Nano and don't want to risk all the problems I've been reading about on this board (and elsewhere). How can I add the Nano to the system without upgrading to iTunes 6 and QT 7? Can I just plug in the Nano and have the 6-26-2005 version of iPod Updater set up the Nano, or do I need to use the Updater version that came with the Nano?
We just move music to the iPods manually and don't have time to fix any serious problems. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    hi Sarah!
Can I just plug in the Nano and have the 6-26-2005 version of iPod Updater set up the Nano, or do I need to use the Updater version that came with the Nano?
I just checked my copy of 2005-06-26, and it doesn't contain iPod nano Software 1.0. probably best to download, install and run a copy of iPod Updater 2005-10-12 from Apple for the nano setup:

  • Ipod not connecting after upgrade to itunes 8

After upgrading to itunes 8 my ipod (nano) will no longer connect to my computer and is not recognised by itunes. When I connect the ipod I get the windows 'install new hardware wizard' running but however I try to work through this I get nowhere. Looking at Device Manager in Windows says there are no drivers for the ipod - it has a little exclamation mark next to it.
My wifes brand new ipod will also not connect and its straight out of the box.
Not at all sure what to do next. The support pages don't seem to cover getting the install new hardware wizard. Any help or advice please!.

Having reported this to my dealer, and them agreeing to supply a new lead to try, I had one final attempt at resetting the iPod.
Having restored, reset and updated the iPod half a dozen times before without success, a reset as described here:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
worked and it is now merrily playing again in the car with the original lead.
It would seem that Apple have developed another piece of spectacularly temperamental equipment........and people slate Microsoft!
Hope it works for you as well!

  • IPod Sync Error after Upgrading to iTunes 10 and ios5

    Some help please,
I've upgraded to iTunes 10 and installed ios5 on to my iPod Touch and I cant now sync as iTunes reports that the backup is corrupted or not compatable with the iPod
    Thanks

    Dear Mr. Sawyer,
To my surprise, the version is shown as 10.0.1.22. I will uninstall itunes and try loading the same again. After uninstalling do we need to delete any registry entries for Windows XP.
Thanks for your response and concern.

  • 80 GB iPod Classic freezing with upgrade to iTunes 9.2

So, I finally got around to upgrading to iTunes 9.2 and when I plug my 80 GB iPod Classic into my computer (Windows Vista), iTunes freezes. My iPod says it is connected, but it doesn't show up in iTunes and when I plug it in to iTunes I can't listen to any music or do anything in iTunes.
Is there a way to rectify this problem?
    Thanks for reading.

Before you update your iPod, reboot it (hold down middle and top button until the apple logo shows up and then release the buttons) once the iPod menu screens come back then connect to iTunes.

  • My advice to Ipod touch owners - Don't upgrade to OS 4.0 yet

There are to many errors being reported on this forum with people, like me, losing some or all of their data on upgrade and then not being able to restore. And wasting lots of hours in the process.
The last big iOS update- version 3- was a mess up on Apple's part too (eg Wifi problems)
My suggestion is wait 3-4 months, keep checking this forum to wait for the complaints to quieten down and for apple to release itunes 9.2 , iOS 4.2 (at least). I actually suspect this time the problem is with itunes.
I waited to 3.1.3 last time, I didn't this time, and now regret it big time.

My upgrade went smooth as silk. It took about 20 minutes from start to finish on my 32 GB iPod Touch 3rd Gen. Everything seems to work as advertised, including Wi-Fi and GMail. I do have a personal rule that has served me well over my 26 Apple years and that is to DO NOTHING ELSE (well, maybe take a shower) while upgrading/updating. (I don't even surf the web while the process is ongoing.) Can't say for sure that it's why I NEVER have any of the upgrading/updating nightmares that I read about here on the boards, but I'm not about to test the Apple Gods to find out! The few times I ask for help here have been because the "system" between my ears is not functioning at capacity. Not Apple's fault.
I feel it's perfectly safe to grab the wonderful iOS 4 if you have prepared your iDevice by backing it up and making sure you have the latest iTunes installed on your Mac or PC. It would be a cryin' shame to not be able to enjoy all these new features ASAP.
Some apps definitely need to be updated, however.

  • Ipod not recognised after upgrading to iTunes 11.2.2

I upgraded ITunes to version 11.2.2 yesterday afternoon and have tried to update my ipod classic this morning. The ipod is not recognised in ITunes nor does it appear in My Computer. My partner has plugged in her Ipod nano and this is not recognised either. Have done all the recommended troubleshooting, which doesn't work. What's happening? I am using Windows 8 on a brand new laptop.

    Hi 22Archie,
If you are having issues with your iPods not being recognized by iTunes on your Windows machines, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):

  • IPod not recognized since upgrade to iTunes 4.9

I haven't done any extensive troubleshooting yet, but at a first glance, it appears that since the installation of iTunes 4.9, my iPod is no longer being recognized when it is connected via Firewire.
It does not mount on the desktop, cannot be seen by iTunes, and iPod updater does not see it as being connected.
I've done the usual maintenance, repaired permissions, deleted plists, etc... and nothing seemed to help.
I'll be playing around some more tonight, but I just wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything similar. I read a few posts here that were somewhat related, but most were USB issues, and not Firewire.

Yes! I too have the same problem. I initially thought it was because I have an "old" 3rd generation iPod and a G3 iMac. I was ready to buy I new iPod today, but now I see the problem is something larger.
Before I spend more $$$ on an iPod, I will watch here for a possible solution. Oh, iPod Updater doesn't work for me (again, it's an old, 2003 model iPod). I tried the "battery drain" thing- no luck either.
Was Apple's haste in delivering iTunes 4.9 (with Podcasting) a goof? Why was this not tested? I can't believe they would make a mistake?! Not Apple. Was Microsoft involved with the development of iTunes 4.9? I bet that explains it! (wink, wink)

  • First time IPOD owner and do not understand "itunes media"(question inside)

    Hello,
Just moved from Zune to the IPod, and I have a 120GB Ipod, I have about 12,000 songs I want to transfer and everyitme I try and transfer I get this message "There is not enough space on itunes media, you need an additional 28GB to copy these files" What does that mean??? I even tried half the songs and got this message. THis is really fustrating, can someone please help! Just want my songs on my ipod, nothing fancy. Thank you.

First of all, there is no upper limit on the amount of space, or number of songs you can have "in iTunes".
I'm curious though about the message Ther is not enough space on itunes media, because the music is not on or even "in" iTunes, so I don't really understand why it states "on Tunes".
If you let iTunes place the music (the media) where it wants, it's in the iTunes Media folder or in the iTunes/iTunes Music folder. What iTunes (the programme) does is index, or catalogue the music, remembering where the music is actually stored.
So a message saying that there isn't enough storage space has to be referring to the hard drive where that folder is located. Where is that? Is it on the computer, or an extrenal hard drive? Is the drive full or nearly full?

  • 5.5 Gen Video Ipod rebooting when trying to play certain PodCasts.

    Hi,
After enjoying an Ipod Nano for a year and loving every minute, I went ahead and purchased the new 80GB Video iPod.
Its great but it has a tendency to reboot for no apparent reason when playing certain PodCasts. For example: Its impossible to play the Buzzcast episode: BuzzCast 09/27/06 - "Microsoft protects your ****". The Ipod shuts off and reboots every time. I'm using Itunes 7.0.1 and the Ipod is running the latest available firmware.
Can anyone else who also owns the new 80GB iPod download this particular episode and confirm?
By the way, I've also noticed that even though the iPod is connected / docked with iTunes and clearly visible in the panel to the left, The message "Waiting for iPod" is displayed when trying to re-sync a while later. The only way to get iTunes to make contact with the iPod again is to physically disconnect the cable and reconnect, (even though the iPod icon was still clearly visible to the left thus indicating already established contact with the iPod) Weird!
    Anyone else having this experience?
    Input appreciated.
    Kind regards / Alex

WHAT was apple thinking when they released iTunes 7.0 and firmware 1.2!? I installed in on my 60gb Video and the whole thing went to pot.
    1. It sounded horrible
    2. It would only allow me to download about 25% of my movies to the iPod (I have a large library and I take movies on and off depending on what I feel like for the trip I am taking.)
AppleCare Support was USELESS. Here is what I finally figured out to get the pod working right again:
    1. Uninstalled iTunes 7 from my computer (PC).
    2. Went into the registry editor and deleted all remaining references to iTunes.
    3. Restored the firmware to the version that came with the iPod last January.
    4. Used the 2006.06.28 firmware updater
    5. Installed iTunes 6.0.5
It works like a charm, just like it did before Apple "made things better."
AppleCare told me that they could not support songs ripped from my CD's, or any video that had not been purchased from iTunes. I am certain that the reason for this had nothing to do with their wanting a monopoly on music and video that will work on an iPod. Then he offered to report the problem I was having to their development team.
I asked him if other people were having problems with iTunes 7. He said the question was not relevant to my problems! I pressed him more for an answer and he continued to parrot what Apple has obviously told him to say. "My new 80gb Video is working fine. I have not had the problems you are having."
    DON'T UPGRADE TO ITUNES 7!!!!
I have ordered an 80gb since he said they work so flawlessly. Reading in this discussion, it appears that plenty of new 80gb users are frustrated too.

i have well over 23 GB left on my 30 GB video ipod and for some reason stupid itunes will not add the files to my movies setion of my library. I have the videos in my documents, and i click add file to library, that doesnt work, and when i double clcik the file so it will play in itunes, that doesnt work either! PLEASE help.

    Oh, my mistake!
The screen is leaving pixel lines? That sounds like a pretty well damaged iPod.
If restoring/updating hasn't worked, the best thing to do is to request service for your iPod. If it is under warranty, they will do it for free:
