5G will not charge from wall adapter

My new 15 gig 5G will not charge from a 5 volt wall adapter. It charges fine on the USB port on my computers.
So I decided to take a USB extension and cut it an place a current meter in series with the 5 Volt on the USB line. What I found is that it will draw ~500ma with the data lines connected in the cable(in other words a normal cable). Now if I disconnect the data wires so that I am only connecting the 5 volts from the USB port it will draw ~100 ma for a second and then draw no current. It appears that some kind of handshaking is required. Is this normal?
As it is now I will not be able to ever charge it from a 5 volt supply.Do they do something to the data lines on wall adapters?

Well I finally got my "dumb" USB charger (a Belkin F8Z009 Power pack) to work with my iPod 5G 30GB. To wake up the 5G needs to see 2.5 volts on it's data lines. The easiest way to do this is with a voltage divider made with two equal resistors. Like this:
As a poof of concept I made the device below with four 30K resistors but anything from 10K to 50K should work fine.
A more compact wake up cable could be made by cutting into a standard USB male-female extension cable and soldering in four resistors like this:
Of course if your building your own or can get your "dumb" USB charger open then the resistor voltage dividers can go inside.

  • IPhone will not charge from wall socket only from Laptop or Computer!

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
My IPhone will charge sometimes and sometime it wont:
I mean like sometimes it will charge from the wall socket and sometimes it wont!
It will go so far as to turn off because of no battery life! Then I plug it in to the Laptop and it starts charging!

I have had this problem for some time. It applies to both a wall charger (the one that came with iPhone and a third-party model) and a car charger (third party). Both wall and car chargers are rated at 1000 ma which should be enough power. Yet when the battery charge goes below a certain level the phone will not charge from wall or car charger, but it will charge from a computer.
I did some research on USB power. Per specification, a USB client (the iPhone) cannot draw more than 100 ma from the USB host (charger or computer or hub) unless it asks for and gets permission to draw more current. (This is so it does not interfere with other USB devices connected to the host.)
Inexpensive wall chargers do not contain any computing elements. They short the D+ and D- lines together. This makes it impossible for a client to negotiate a higher current draw, so the iPhone, working per the USB standard, limits itself to 100 ma. When connected to a computing device such as a computer or USB hub, the iPhone can negotiate a higher current, up to the 500 ma currently allowed by the USB standard.
This begs the question, why can't the iPhone charge on 100 ma when the battery is almost completely discharged? After all, when the battery has more charge, the iPhone will charge nicely from a wall charger. Perhaps someone has some insight into this aspect.
There is evidently a new USB standard for wall chargers that will fix this issue. Both the host and client must implement in order for it to work. (I haven't read the standard, but suspect it involves the client detecting that the D+ and D- lines are shorted together.) Obviously, either the charger or my iPhone 3G don't comply with this new standard. Maybe the iPhone 3GS does? Or maybe we have to wait for another iPhone model that has the hardware that complies with the new USB wall charger standard.
Meanwhile I have to be careful not to fully discharge my iPhone battery when I am away from a computer. I recently went on a 30-day trip and had no problem because I charged the phone every night. Of course, I did not use it much because it was an international trip and AT&T roaming rates are horribly expensive.

  • After using Energie On The Go BB will not charge from wall

My BB was out of power and I bought an Energizer Energie on the go to charge my BB and it worked fine. But since then the BB will not charge from the wall. I bought a new batery and same story. the plug con comes on when first plugged to the wall charger bt goes out in 3 sec. What's the deal? How can Fix? have tried removing battery and reseting several times but no luck.

I guess it's possible that the charger block is faulty, and maybe you had a power surge that knocked them out, perhaps the cables are good which is why they charge with USB port on computer of in a car but the block the USB cable plugs into is bad thus when using a wall outlet it doesn't charge... Have you had to reset the GFCI for any outlets in your home??

  • IPhone's 4S & 5 will not charge from wall charger

Similarly to everyone else, I have updated my iPhone 5 & also 4S to IOS 6.1.3.
The batteries in both phones are draining very fast just as a lot of other people are commenting on, but also both phones will not charge from various devices that do work.
I have 2 cables that both work in the car an on my PC, neither now work when connected to a GPO.
This started straight after the phones were updated.
    Thoughts; advice please.

i did the basic stuff OF COURSE .... but i am NOT willing to go through the pain of restoring my phone just because Apple screwed up another IOS update ..... i am really getting sick of thiose half-baked updates that break more things than fix ....

  • Ipod Touch will not charge with wall adapter.

I just purchased an IPod Touch second generation, the battery went down and I connected it to my wall power adapter that I have used to charge my other IPods, I got a message telling me that they were not compatible. Can anyone help me understand why?

Discovered my new Touch 2G would not charge from any of the USB chargers (2 Ac powered, 2 battery types) that worked fine with a Classic iPod. Found a knowledgeable expert at a Genius bar, and he brought out an adapter from the back that would connect Apple's thin connector for the output of a Classic power source to the input of the Touch - but it cost as much as a real Apple USB charger. Got a real Apple USB charger. As far as I can tell, the USB to Apple proprietary connect white cords are identical - I use the ones that came with the Classic, with the Touch, and with the USB charger interchangeably. The one difference: Apple's USB charger is rated at 1 amp; the 3rd party ones are rated at the usual 0.5 amp. I've since purchased a battery backup designed for the Touch and it does seem to work. It has 0.7 amp output instead of 0.5 amp. Recommended answer: just give up and get Apple's little USB power block (same as iPhone one) for about $30. It works, and it's small.

  • HT1414 my ipad mini will not charge from wall socket and it will not show itself on i tunes via my pc... i have also substituted my power charger from my i-phone to no avail.

my daughter's i-pad mini will not charge up from the wall socket and it will not show itself on i-tunes via my pc... i substituted the power charger from my i-phone to no avail with the wall socket... seems like i read that the earlier i-pads have some problems with the lightning socket but can not remember exactly...there is no apple retail shop in the small city where i live but would travel to one if the fix is relatively quick or easy...otherwise, what can i do for diagnosis and repair?

Most likely your cable is bad and you need to get a replacement.

  • HT4060 My new ipad 4 will not charge with wall adapter.

My new ipad 4 will not charge when I plug it in with wall adapter? It shows the low red battery, the charge sign but also shows the plug in sign. The plug in does not go away.

If the battery has been completely depleted it may take more than an hour before the iPad becomes responsive again. Leave it on the charger overnight. If it does not charge up by the next morning make an appointment at an Apple store to have it looked at.

  • HT1384 iPod Classic will not charge from wall outlet

My iPod Classic 80G will charge from my computers and my iHome dock, but not from the wall outlet. The cord, outlet, and adapter all work. We know the regular adapter works, it's an Apple universal USB to wall adapter that charges our iPad. We tried other cords (have two), other outlets, and even my kindle 2-prong adapter. Nothing worked. Suggestions?

    Hello there, Anhaja.
First off, great job in your isolating steps performed already. One step that wasn't mentioned is found in the following Knowledge Base article:
    How to reset iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
    For your particular model:
How to reset an iPod with a Click Wheel
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • IPhone 4 will not charge from wall... help!

I've had my iPhone 4 for going on two years and never had any major issues with it. As of the last couple days, I'm having a major problem charging my phone. In the beginning, it wouldn't charge from the wall or via USB on my laptop. However, it would charge via USB when plugged into a regular windows PC. Really strange if you ask me.
After browing through some similar questions already asked on here, I found a solution for the laptop problem. I was able to update a driver in the device manager and am now able to charge via my laptop and also connect so that I can sync my phone, etc.
It still won't charge with the regular wall charger! Which uses the same USB cord that I'm using in my computer.
Originially, I had 2 wall chargers that I've had forever and when neither one of them were working the other day, I thought they were faulty so I went out and bought a new charger. It worked! I thought I was home free. Wrong. It worked for 1 afternoon and then it stopped working again (but it's the same one that I'm now using in my laptop)... so it only doesn't work when plugged into the wall.
I've tried multiple power blocks, multiple USB cords, multiple wall outlets.
No idea what the issue is!
I also tried a hard reset (power/home button) on my phone, it didn't do anything.
Also, all of my software is up to date (iOS 6.1.3).
I might just suck it up and head to Apple/Verizon tomorrow and see if they can figure it out, but in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas?!
    Thanks!

Check the bottom of the iPhone and make sure there is no lint or debris on the connector that the power/sync cord attaches to.  Also with a very low battery, you may have to let the iPhone charge several minutes before you get any indications. If none of the above solves the problem, try another cable.  You might also want to try a car charger if you've got one.

  • Iphone 4 will not charge from wall or computer ?help

    HI
I noticed my phone had a low battery. Once i got home the phone was dead. Tried charging as usual using the apple leads to the wall - but nothing comes up on the screen - no 'charging symbol' instead the phone remains dead. Any ideas?

  • My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable usin ghte same wall plug in the same wall socket?

My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or directly into an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable using the same wall plug in the same wall socket. This makes no sense but I see that it has been posted as a problem elsewhere. This must be due to some kind of degredation of the Ipod. . It is not fixed by IOS resets as others have noted.
Has anyone asked Apple directly about this?

    Hi there Apples or Pears,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the articles below.

  • New iPad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help on that

my new ipad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help why if any one knows? thk

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
