I'm guessing it's a hardware problem. Your best option is to go to an Apple Store as soon as you can to try and sort this all out. While you're waiting to go visit an Apple Store, however, I'd imagine you still want to use your phone. To circumvent your hardware button problems, try enabling Assistive Touch by going to Settings>General>Accesibility>Assistive Touch. You'll see a small box appear on your screen. Tapping it will bring up several options for you to choose from, like the home button. Clicking the "Device" option will give you several options for controlling your phone that you would normally use hardware buttons for (i.e. volume, lock your phone, etc.) Hope this helps and good luck!

  • IPhone Home Button not working after upgrade to ios 5.1.1

    Hey everyone,
    I'm pretty sure this is a software failure due to the symtoms the iPhone is showing;
0 - the home button does not work at all when the phone is turned on and running ios 5.1.1, well it used to work okay when i had ios 5.0.1, I upgraded to 5.1.0 and started working randomly, upgraded to 5.1.1 to see if it was fixed with no luck at all.
1 - When locked the screen does sometime light up, like when you press the home button and don't slide the unlock button. but it does not exit apps anytime, I mean it doesn't act like it's pressing the home button randomly but only when the phone is locked.
2- The button does work perfectly when iOS is not running: I can get in and get out of recovery and dfu mode at will, that wouldn't be possible if the button were broke.
3- what else? Oh yea, not really a symtom: Tried the 'home button calibration' several times.
4 - It's not filthy, since I really cleaned it thoroughly with a powerful tiny nozed air blower I got and gave a rubbing alcohol treatment too.
5 - when I shut the phone down it instantly turns back on, I can interrupt the turning on for turning the phone into dfu mode (i'm sure It's in DFU mode because the tinyumbrella log monitor tells me)
I'm now using the 'soft' home button that goes in the accesibility options, but hey, I didn't pay a ton of money for a phone that the same Apple is gonna break down.
It's out of warranty and I don't have apple stores where I live.
I'd downgrade to 5.0.1 in a snap if I could but I'm not into jailbreaking, so the shsh blob thingie is not a possibility.
Any apple dev around that can give me a workaround?
    thanks a lot in advance
    Added more info ~

I had the same problem with Home button not responding after upgrading from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.1.1 on an iPhone4.   I solved it but not sure exactly what fixed it.   Here is what I did.
    1.  Took it local Apple store Genius appointment.   They used a special tool and took some lint out of the connector opening.   The Home button started working.   They said even though the phone was out of warranty, I could buy a new replacement one without a contract for $150.
    2.   The Home button stopped working when I got home.   I got some compressed air in a can and blew the air through the connector to try and clean out more dust.   I now keep the phone with the connector opening facing down in my pocket.   I also struck the phone downward on my hand or other soft surface to force as much dust out as possible.
    3.  The Home button still was intermittent.  I then tried to do a hard reset by holding the power on key and the Home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds.  This doesn't work if the Home button doesn't respond.
    4.  I connected the iphone to Itunes via the USB to sync the phone.  While connected, I did a Hard Reset by Holding the Power button and Home button simultaneously.  I noticed the Home button responded better when connected to ITUNES via the USB.
    5.  I did a backup of the iphone4 by highlighting the iphone 4 while connected to ITunes and right mouse click and selecting BACKUP.    I was prepared to reset my phone4 in iTUNES and restore it from the backup.
The phone worked consistently before I had to do this.
    6.  As a last resort which I didn't need to do, I was going to copy all my settings for the iphone by selecting the phone in iTUNES and looking at all the sync settings.   I would then have restored the iphone to original factory settings and then sync the phone using the copied settings.  This would have made sure that the backup didn't include the bug.
Fortunately, I didn't have to do step 5 and 6.   Things started working after Step 4.  So I don't really know if it was the iOS 5.1.1 upgrade or pure coincidence that the Home button stopped working immediately after the upgrade.

  • Iphone home button & Restore is broke Please help

Woke up around 11am today and my iphone was working fine, left it on the side in a cool area and around 11am the home button decided to stop working.
Luckily i have a code and only way i worked around to go back to the main screen was locking the phone, then unlock go into emergency call then back and enter my code. no problem.
Previously to fix the problem i restored the iphone and then backed up, worked a joy.
But today i tried that and i get the following bug, Plug the iphone in restore goes through properly, i get the message saying keep iphone conencted. then a error message says. Iphone needs to be restored as its currently in recovery mode.
Now if i unplug the usb cable and turn the phone off and turn it on, it will finish the install of the restore.
Ill then plug it back into the pc and perform the back up, and shortly after ill get the same problem. so i unplug and turn off the iphone. turn it back on and it will be backed up.
I can then sync it through itunes, but the home button remains disabled.
What can i do any help. Im curious if its bricked it self.
Its not jailbroken and its the latest update of 4.3.5
    Details: Iphone 3gs white 16gb
    software version: 4.3.5
    any help much appreciated reagrds

also due to home button not responding, i am unable to enter DFU mode

  • Why is my iPhone home button not working?

Recent;y my iPhone 4 home button has intermittently stopped going "home" and just stay on the last page selected.  I spoke with an apple customer service person and the said that if the horizontal tray at the bottom of the display could be too full ad that would cause a delay in the home button working. Any suggestions?

If this has anything to do with software, a back up and restore is always the best option to do! First you will want to create a back up via this link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US
After the back up has been created, if you really want to save your information to the computer than here is a whole list of ways to save your info to a computer:
    Section 1:
              -About authorizing and de-authorizing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1730
Prevent unprompted syncing of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad:
    Mac- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1764
    Windows- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1677
    Section 2:
-iOS how to transfer or sync content to your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296?viewlocale=en_US
Transfer purchases from your iPod, iphone, or iPad to an authorized computer:
    Mac- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2554
    Windows- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2566?viewlocale=en_US
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
               Backing up, updating and restoring:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
After you are comfortable that you saved all of your information, do a system restore back to factory settings! the reason is because if you can prove to apple, that in factory settings that the phone is not operating as expected, so long as your in warranty they will service the product. If you are outside, you should only have to pay either $169 (Canada) $149 (USA) for an iphone 4. It may be a little more expensive for the 4S as it is the newest product. Those same prices apply to a iphone 3G and 3GS

  • My iphone home button wont work - according to the Sale of Goods act I can expect this to last longer than the 1 year 83 days that I have had the phone, regardless of any guarentee

I have a 3Gs iPhone, which I've had for 1 year 83 days and the home button si faulty. I have checked on the internet and this seems to be a common issue.
I have a contract with O2 for 24 mouths due to run out March 2012 but the phone was bought from Carphone Warehouse.
I have been to O2 and they say it's out of the Apple warranty and therefore I will have to pay for a repair. They also have now said because it came from CPW they will do nothing for me.
I have been to Apple and they say the same thing that I have to pay for the repair as it's out of warranty
My query is surely I can expect a phone that has been looked after should last longer than 83 days? Therefore under the sale of good act I should get a repair or replacement for free???
I am now paying for a contract where the phone doesn't work!

Good luck with that. Most of the world does not have anything like what you believe your "sale of goods act" is supposed to do. It sounds like you expect it to extend the warranty on a Product from Apple until your contract with an entirely different company is complete.  I think you'll find that you are misinterpreting that law.  The exception may be if you purchased the phone from the carrier and the law is written in such a way as to require them to replace the device if it fails during the term of the contract, though I doubt that will be the case either.

  • IPhone Home Button

Is there a way to change the function of your Home Button while the phone is locked?   Currently, if I double tap the home button while my phone is locked my iPod controls come up.  I think I am inadvertently double tapping the home button because I find my iPod playing without me switching to the app.  I thought there was a way that you could choose the functionality of the home button, but maybe I was dreaming.
    Thanks

so iTunes saves all my numbers?
Yes, they should be backed up.

  • IPhone home button makes cracking noise

Recently I got my iPhone replaced at an apple store so I'm assuming the phone is refurbished. The problem is when I touch the home button it makes a light cracking noise. It doesn't make it when I press it down, only when I tap it. Will the problem persist? I don't want to have to go back to the Genius Bar as it involves quite a long journey.

I had the same problem. Read elsewhere that a tech at the Genius Bar fixed it in 1 or 2 minutes. So I thought about what they might have done, whiat was probably causing it, and fixed it myself:
Fixed mine this way: Turn the phone sideways and flick the home button with your finger over and over. (Hold your pointing finger with your thumb, then let go and let the fingernail *hit* the button.) Start lightly. Inrease the power of the flicks until the sound disappears. Rotate the phone when doing it if needed.
I think this worked because something was stuck behind the button, and flicking either crushed or dislodged the tiny piece of grit.

  • IPhone home button malfunctioning

    Hi everyone
Has anyone come across this issue where you struggle to function the home button on the iPhone4 after using sometime?
    Cheers
    Sakkey

i had 2 issues:  the buggy home button and a massive battery drain.
this fixed it all on my iphone:
go to settings>General>Network and where it say personal hotspot you should see either on/off or set up personal hotspot
mine had personal hotspot and a spinning ball- it was continuosly in motion
    the fix is:
settings>General> Reset> Reset network settings (you will have to re-enter all your wifi settings)
then after it resets hold the power button to turn off the iphone i kept mine off for 30 seconds.
re-boot and you are good to go
my power drain is gone- my buggy home button is good again- all is right with the world

  • 3g iphone home button finnicky: survey

My home button seems finnicky. About 1 time in 10, it takes 2-4 clicks of the home button to get the phone to respond. In fact, as I write this, I've clicked the home button 4 times and gotten no response. Most of the time it works fine, especially with a good strong deliberate click. I'm worried about problems, such as if it gets worse down the road. I've read one or two threads of other folks finding this problem and wondering if this has been considered an exchange-worthy defect, and whether it's prevalent through a large percent of phone populations (eg, get an exchange, and the odds are stacked that there will be no improvement).
    Much appreciated.

My first 3G had this problem. I had to press the button firmly to get it to respond. Having had several other iPhones I knew this was not the proper feel for the button. I took it back to the Apple store where it was purchased a few days later and they replaced it on the spot. Of course your mileage may vary on getting a replacement.

  • My iphone home button has stopped working

My iphone's home button has been acting up and sometimes it didnt work but now my home button just doesnt work at all. Also last night I used the Keep it clean wipes to clean out the home button and now it just wont work but when I try to re calibrate the home button like when I go to photos or stocks and I hold down the power button until it say '' slide to power off '' then I press and hold the home button and it still force quits back to the home screen when I do that but when I press the home button to go back to the home screen or to use the multitasking or when the voice control it doesnt work anymore I dont know what to do. Ive got an appointment tomorrow at the genius bar and my 1 year warranty just expired a few weeks ago (25 june)
Also I dont want to get the phone replaced as everything on the phone works except for the home button now
Also If I take in the phone will they just fix the home button or replace the extire home button ? and if so how much will it cost ?
Also  and after  I used the wipes the home button did still work  but it just stopped working today when I was in the car and I wiped the phone with my shirt to clean the dust and it just completely stopped working
Any help appreciated  as Im feeling extremely sad now because I love this phone and its useless now without the home button
    Thanks

  • My iPhones home button has stopped working.

My home button for my iphone 4 has stopped working, i didnt break it but i have been inside the phone, though I havent changed anything.
Will Apple repair my iphone for free, or give me a new one for free?

If you've opened your phone, your warranty is void.  Apple won't touch your phone.  Only option now is to find a 3rd party repair shop.
