5th gen. ipod not recognized by Mac

My 5th generation 30 gb ipod is no longer recognized by my Mac running 10.3.9 and iTunes 7. I've tried all of the standard troubleshooting except for restore since it can't be recognized to be restored. When it's plugged into the computer, it's charging with an animated icon but the ipod never shows up on the desktop or in iTunes. Help!
5th gen ipod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • 5th Gen Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes. Have tried it all. Any Ideas?

Hello everyone. I have a 5th generation Ipod I recently purchased that I'm having what seems to be an common issue. When I connect the ipod to my computer via USB, the Ipod is not recognized in windows or Itunes. Occasionally the Ipod will charge when connected but not always. Though this is the same for the old wire I used and the new one I purchased today. Even when shown charging the Ipod is not recognized and there is no noise that a device has been connected. I have tried the 4 R's (without Restore) which I can't do, chaninging the drive letter, disabling start up software, uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple Software. I have tried connecting to another computer and have gotten the same result. When I check the diagnostic screen on the ipod it shows that a usb cable is detected. I have upgraded all my driver software, disabled and reenabled them. I'm almost 3 hours from the nearest store so that it out of the question. I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas and will try anything you think might be the issue and fix. Thank you for time.

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • 5th gen Ipod not recognized and not charging on any computer.

    Hello
I have a 5th gen Ipod with an odd issue. I have an Ihome radio with Ipod dock in which my Ipod charges and plays everthing just fine. I usually just keep it there to charge and only hook up to my computer if I want to buy something or put other music on it. I tried syncing the other day and nothing happened, would not sync, charge, my computer would not even recognize it. I have tried 2 differnt cables, reset, have tried it with itunes started and not running on my vista computer and have also tried just to charge on a computer with XP that doesnt have Itunes installed. My daughter has in Ipod Touch that works just fine with both my cables and computers.
Any ideas of whats wrong with my 5th gen?
    Thanks

Try restarting your computer with your ipod plugged in. You might also try using a different USB port. If all else fails downgrade to itunes 6 here http://www.apple.com/support/

  • 5th gen ipod not recognized by windows, but old ipod min works fine.

my new ipod is not recognized by windows at all. my old ipod mini works fine. i even uninstalled everything and tried reinstalling the new ipod. after that didnt work, i plugged in my mini, and it reinstalled perfectly.
I also plugged my new 5th gen into another computer with itunes and it recognized it perfectly.
is there some sort of software conflict between the mini and other ipods? this is driving me insane.

  • 5th Gen IPod not recognized by Windows

My problem seems a bit similar to others but just not quite enough that I have to ask this. Sorry for the long post in advance.
I sync'd my Ipod about ohhh a month ago and last charged it using my laptop (which doesn't have itunes installed on it). My Ipod was already set up to be a hard drive via the Itunes tools.
Now, the problem is, is when I plug in my IPod to known good USB ports nothing at all happens. I have tried this so far:
    Reset my Ipod.
Try another Cable. Another USB cable will not work but I can interestingly enough charge my Ipod with a car adapter I bought.
Tried two very different PC's. One a laptop (HP) the other a home built pc.
I checked my services.msc like some have suggested. Both Plug and pray and Terminal services are on.
Only thing that I have installed recently between not working on this computer and working was Sims 2 Pets. The laptop has had no new software installed and still doesn't not see any device plugged into it.
Did not update my Itunes until after the problem happened.
So, I can charge and still listen to what I have on my ipod currently but never sync again. There some kind of limit to times you can plug your Ipod in or something?
If anyone could help me on this I would be very greatful. I am planning on taking my ipod into an Apple store and see if they can do anything. At the moment I am angry and just want to go exchange the darn thing again.

I went to the Apple store in my town today and had them test out my iPod on a mac there. No avail. Even the mac wouldn't recognize my iPod. He even forced it into Disk mode there and it still didn't work. The sales man suggested I contact apple care and get it replaced.
Just as a note to what all I have tried since my last post, i tried another computer that did not have any of the current Windows updates (note: all systems I tested this on was WinXP) and that system didn't recognize it either. Nothing! it is as if Windows just ignores that anything is in the port... very fustrating.
So I am going to try and get a replacement. I let you know if this solved my problem.

  • 5th gen IPOD not recognized by BMW

Hi all, I just had the ipod adapter added to my 2007 BMW 550i.
I plugged in my ipod video, and nothing happened. Mine is a 60gb ipod video, software version 1.2.3, model MA147LL.
The engineer at the shop had the 30gb version of the same ipod. Same software, but the model is MA146LL. (I suspect that is the model number difference between the 30 and 60gb ipod).
The engineer's IPOD worked just fine. When it was plugged in, the BMW logo appeared on the ipod's screen and all functions worked.
With mine, the battery begins to charge but nothing else happens.
I have 'restored' my ipod but that didn't make any difference.
My wife's iPhone also works fine in the car, so I don't think the problem is in the car. (and of course neither does the autoshop, so they are no help further)
Does anyone have any idea? Is there a list of what is compatible or not with various BMW's ?
Is there some onboard firmware that can be updated on the ipod? (other than the software?)
    thanks for any input

    Buy a Saab.
    Just joking!!
Did the engineer plug his iPod in before yours? I was thinking that perhaps your car has "married" up to the engineers iPod or something? Can the iPod adapter be reset?

  • 5th gen Ipod not playing in any docking station

I have a 6th generation ipod classic that works great in my pioneer receiver and in both cars. I bought a 5th gen ipod on ebay for my wife and it seems to work just fine.
I restored it using itunes, then put synced songs to it. Everything works fine when it's connected to Windows but it won't play in any docking station. It gets a charge from the station, but won't play.
Does the 5th gen ipod not work in docking stations or is it possible mine isn't functioning right. I contacted the manufacturer of the station in one of the cars and they said all ipods should work.

I have the same problem with a Pioneer X-HM50-K hifi system. My 5th gen ipod (system 1.3 which up-to-date iTunes claims is up-to-date, tried resetting/restoring/all that), when plugged into the docking bay, pauses the music and shows a tick mark after a while with the text "ok to disconnect" beneath it. The tick mark becomes a Pioneer logo after a while but that does not change the fact that the ipod does not react, neither to the command buttons on the Pioneer system (or on the remote control) nor to the buttons on the iPod itself (those do 'click', but have no effect). It does get charged, but doesn't play, just as in the top posting.
A friend's iPod nano works just fine on the Pioneer, and my iPod works fine for everything else (headphones, iTunes, other docking systems I tried at friends', ...). So there seems to be a specific incompatibility with Pioneer systems.
How can this problem be investigated and solved ?

  • How to reformat Ipod Nano 5th gen when not recognized by Windows or iTunes?

I've done all the steps on the site to correct this problem up until the reformatiing part except I tried to update the driver software but Windows says that it encounters an error when trying to install the new software.
So after going through the steps I noticed that the iPod I just bought was formatted for Mac. It says that in order for me to reformat, I have to restore my iPod in iTunes but since it isn't recognized my my computer or iTunes, I can't do it.
    Suggestions anyone?

  • 5th Gen iPod Not Being Recognized by iTunes

    5th Gen iPod w/Updater 1.3. iTunes Ver. 7.6.2.9
Two weeks ago purchased music with no problems; sync'ed library w/iPod w/no problems.
Purchased music a few days ago- no problems. Started iTunes today to sync iPod and got msg saying registry values missing for certain drivers for burning discs, etc. Cause could be from other programs that burn discs etc.(???)
Plugged in iPod, got the tone beep and then a message that iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod attached. Disconnect and reattach. Did this several times - still doesn't work. I can play tunes from my iTunes library and my iPod OK - just can't sync them up. Anyone got a solution??
    Thanks, Unicorn39

Well, after digging into the 1000's of msgs regarding problems similar to mine I found something I thought might help at (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538). I teied it and found that my drivers were OK so that wasn't the problem. While trying things I suddenly got the iPod recognized and it started sync'ing. I think the solution to my issue was to connect the iPod first; wait for it to be recognized by the pc (the tone beep) then go thru the acceptance of iTunes agreement, etc., iTunes then opened and the sync process began. I tried it with iTunes open and it won't work. It sounds like a hokey way to do it but at least I have my library and iPod in sync.
My next problem to work on is there seems to be registry problem with iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's. Got to figure that out and fix.
Since I do have CopyTrans I may just re-install a back-level of iTunes and copy my iPod into the new iTunes library.

  • ITunes 7.3.2 (OSX) and 5th Gen iPod not synching

I have had my 5th gen iPod (30GB) for about 2 years now and originally had used it with Windows, then I switched over to a Mac in Feb and have been pretty happy. Normally i synch my iPod daily to get my playlists updated (so I don't listen to the same thing all the time) and so I can get new Podcasts that were downloaded. Before I left for work this morning, I was able to synch my iPod with no problem, when I was about to synch it before I went to bed, it will not synch. When I try to put in the iPod, iTunes then crashes. I try to put in the iPod and let iTunes open automatically, it loads then crashes again. I have rebooted both the Mac and did a reset on my iPod, but can't even perform a restore since before iTunes would pop up the iPod section, it crashes first. it IS mac formatted. i don't know what is going on and what chnged from this morning to this evening and why suddenly it doesn't work.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I deleted both iTunes and Quicktime7, emptied the trash, restarted, then reinstalled QT then iTunes. Still getting the same issue. Still "crashing" when the iPod is connected.
This is some of the information from the bug report that I thought might be helpful to figure out what went wrong (didn't want to include ALL the crash report, so I just included the info before the "thread crashed" details and the system info at the bottom):

  • ITunes crashes when connected to 5th gen iPod, not other iPods

iTunes 6.0.1 crashes EVERY time it starts up with the new 5th gen iPod. Works fine with other iPods, or no iPod at all. Reinstalled iTunes and restored to version 1.0 iPod form the 11-17-2005 iPod updater. Reset nvram, fixed disk permissions, rebooted. Nothing works. iTunes will not run with the 5th gen iPod. Period.

  • 5th generation IPOD not recognized by computer

Hey Internet users, my dad's been having some troubles and I was hoping to try and help him by reposting something he did elsewhere...
"Hello Everyone and thank you for reading my post.
I have a weird problem, my 30 gig 5th generation Ipod is not recognized by my computer or itunes. This is the last thing it happen, I was working on a client house for days, so my ipod's battery was completely dead, I was kind of desperate, so I thought that I could plug it to my client's mac just to recharge, but nothing happened. So days later I got back home and my windows PC will not recognized or charge the ipod at all. I got it charge and works perfect with my Ihome radio. I tried rebooting the Ipod, I tried resetting it to be in disk mode with not a problem, I tried changing the USB port, I did connected my friends Ipod and connected right away, so the wire connector is OK, I tried a different wire connector just in case, I tried connecting the ipod to a different PC.... I kind of running of ideas here. The ipod works great but I would live to download some new tunes to it... Any ideas. I cannot restore or upgrade firmware because ipod is not recognized by the computer....
The thing I am trying right now is installing the latest Itunes and see what happens. I have windows Pro SP3 recently updated. Your help would be greatly appreciated."
So...if anyone has any ideas, please post!!

I am having the same problem. Sorry I'm not going to be of any help. But I hope someone gives you some recommendations cause I really want to get mine fixed. My iPod did the exact same thing. It was dead and I tried to use my car charger for the first tim and it did nothing. Then I plugged it in to a friends computer and nothing. I can only charge it on a speaker dock. And no computer recognizes that it's connection when I use the USB cable.

  • 3rd gen iPod not recognized when using Firewire

The 3rd gen iPod only charges via FireWire. Given the lousy battery life provided by the device, I need to be able to sync using the Firewire port of my Macbook (Home) or my Macbook Pro (work). The device is not recognized by iTunes (or in general, no notices are given that would indicate that the device is connected). I have:
    - Restored the device via USB
    - Restored it to be Apple format (it was previously Windows format)
    - Confirmed that it DOES work with USB - but that's not what I want
    - Tried this on 2 laptops
    - Confirmed that charging via Firewire DOES work - so I'm assuming that the cable works as well
Is there a diagnostic application that will tell me the status of the on-board firewire port?

I luckily still had a PC around. I was able to reset it on the PC, then reformat on the Mac.
