5th gen iPod to TV, possible without Dock?

I've tried with no dock, and the iBook A/V cables, and all I get is horizontal/vertical lines on my TV with a mixed picture looking much like scrambled HBO. I tried with the A/V cable at a Radio Shack (thankfully the one I went to let me test it in the shop) and got no image in the shop. I see no "Video Out" setting, only a "TV Out" setting which I have tried turned on, and that's when I get this scrambled image on the TV with the iBook cables. Is there a particular Radio Shack or Monster cable you recommend that you know actually works (a catalog number would be helpful). I've also tried the black yellow cables that come with digital still cameras and had no luck getting any video. I don't have a Camcorder, so naturally the one some websites mention might work, I'd have no way of testing. The weird thing is, the cable I tried in Radio Shack was the one I found in their Camcorder section.

Thanks for that.
I was hoping to make the cable that I just bought work, but if I have to I will go buy the Apple one.
Strangely I tried it on a different TV & it all works fine. So I tried it on the same TV again & now 2 out of the 3 work - Videos & Photos (& I do have audio with the pictures too). I just can't play music on it's own. But it works on the other TV so the cable has to be fine. It's the standard one with red, yellow & white plugs.
Anyway, prior to reading this thread I couldn't get any of it to work. So I'm doing ok now.
Thanks very much.

  • 5th gen Ipod not playing in any docking station

I have a 6th generation ipod classic that works great in my pioneer receiver and in both cars. I bought a 5th gen ipod on ebay for my wife and it seems to work just fine.
I restored it using itunes, then put synced songs to it. Everything works fine when it's connected to Windows but it won't play in any docking station. It gets a charge from the station, but won't play.
Does the 5th gen ipod not work in docking stations or is it possible mine isn't functioning right. I contacted the manufacturer of the station in one of the cars and they said all ipods should work.

I have the same problem with a Pioneer X-HM50-K hifi system. My 5th gen ipod (system 1.3 which up-to-date iTunes claims is up-to-date, tried resetting/restoring/all that), when plugged into the docking bay, pauses the music and shows a tick mark after a while with the text "ok to disconnect" beneath it. The tick mark becomes a Pioneer logo after a while but that does not change the fact that the ipod does not react, neither to the command buttons on the Pioneer system (or on the remote control) nor to the buttons on the iPod itself (those do 'click', but have no effect). It does get charged, but doesn't play, just as in the top posting.
A friend's iPod nano works just fine on the Pioneer, and my iPod works fine for everything else (headphones, iTunes, other docking systems I tried at friends', ...). So there seems to be a specific incompatibility with Pioneer systems.
How can this problem be investigated and solved ?

  • Dock for 3rd Gen. iPod Won't Work w/ 5th Gen. iPod?

I have a third generation (G3) iPod, which came with a docking station and an iPod-to-firewire cable. I also have a fifth generation (G5) iPod, which did not come with a docking station, but did come with an iPod-to-USB cable.
I can charge the G3 iPod using the dock and the firewire cable, but the G5 iPod won't charge using that same dock, nor will iTunes recognize the G5 iPod. Even if I plug the USB cable into the dock instead of the firewire one, it won't charge or get recognized.
Am I doing something wrong, do I need a different cable, or do I need to get one of the new docking stations? If the latter, will that docking station work with both my G3 and my G5 iPods?
    - Keith

Yes, the universal dock with work with the 3rd generation iPod--you can check the specs through the Apple Store's product description page. I also know that you can't charge the 5th Gen iPod using the 3rd Gen firewire cable + adapter (I asked about that at the Apple Store today).
What I'd like to know more about is why the 3rd Gen Dock isn't compatible with the 5th Gen iPod even if you use the USB connector. So this is "helpful" but I'm echoing your question about the dock: Why Dock 3 work with iPod 5?

I have a 30 Gig 5th Gen IPOD It plays but there is no sound from the head phones and when its docks can anyone help

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

  • 5th Gen IPOD 60gig Lockups after upgrade to 1.2

I own 2 60gig IPODs and two XP computers
Successfully updated to Itunes 7 but after upgrading the
IPOD to 1.2 the IPOD started locking up. On the main menu it would lockup. I tried all suggestions on this forum
and using my wifes XP, I was able to restore the IPOD back to 1.1.1 (This required resetting twice while using the old update function.)
After ITUNE 7.02 came out I tried again with the same result
This time with both 5th gen IPODs on Both XP machines with the same result. Both IPODS would lock up after upgrading to Version 1.2
Now the Libraries are not backward compatible with ITUNEs 6
so I uninstalled ITUNES 7 and reinstalled ITUNES 6 using the CD that came with the IPODS and successfully restored
the IPODS back to version 1.1.1. Then upgraded both XP
machines to Itunes 7.02 and warned my wife and my dog and myself to never follow the option of upgrading the IPOD
    when asked by ITUNES...
Does anyone have any ideas as to
    1) When if ever will I be able to successfully upgrade to 1.2 and use the games and watch the TV show I purchased
    on my IPOD ?
    2) Has anyone using XP with USB 2.0 successfully upgraded.
to version 1.2 Am I the only one having this Problem?
    3) Would it be possible to go to the APPLE store and Ask them to Format and UPGRADE the IPODS to version 1.2?
    4) Would it be possible for someone from Apple to respond
to this issue on this Forum?

Thank you Apple for finally fixing a major problem
without ever acknowledging you had it...
or even indicating what you update fixed when you distibuted

I think apple needs some lessons how to provide support...

All you have to do is communicate...
Respond with a message like "Known Problem" working on fix.

  • I have a 5th gen iPod Touch. I have made playlists in iTunes. I need to get them to the iPod. When I had a Classic, it was automatic. You could drag and drop using iTunes music to the playlist in iTunes and it would automatically sync to the Classic.

I have a 5th gen iPoc Touch. In the past, with the Classic, I could drag and drop from my iTunes music to a Classic playlist through iTunes. Now, the playlist I create in iTunes doesn't show on the Touch. I have maybe 29 GB of music on my Touch. I have already created playlists in iTunes that have substantial amounts of songs in each. How can I get those playlists on the Touch without doing a total sync that wipes the iPod? Is there a way to do it?
As well, I am noticing here that my 5th gen iPod doesn't show as a registered device. How do I register it?

    For how to sync see:

  • 5th Gen iPod Touch w. iOS 7 not recognized by iTunes 11.1

On Wednesday I updated my 5th gen iPod Touch to iOS 7, and ran the latest iTunes 11.1 update on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5.
For two days, everything worked fine, but today, when I plug in my fully charged iPod it is not recognized by iTunes.
    Some salient facts:
         1. My iPod shuffle is recognized by iTunes without problem when I plug it in to any USB port on my Mac.
         2. I tried all of Apple's troubleshooting suggestions - restarted iPod and computer, tried connecting to different USB ports on my Mac.
         3. My iPod touch will still charge when plugged in to my Mac.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I did try all of Apple's troubleshooting suggestions.  It was the cable - Thanks for the tip!
It didn't occur to me to suspect that my still-new, Apple-brand cable went bad the same week Apple released two major software updates.

  • 5th gen iPod Classic not recognized

Hi, I have a 5th gen iPod classic 30GB that my friend gave to me a few months ago. It was recognized on my computer and itunes at the start and I was able to sync and perform all the needed tasks. I recently had to reformat my computer and now the ipod isn't recognized by USB, or in itunes. The Device manager for Windows XP SP3 says "Unknown Device" and that the drivers for the device are missing. I've tried installing older itunes verions, searching for drivers myself, used 3 different Apple USB cables, restarting the ipod with the center + menu buttons, and checked the format (windows). I also have a 2nd gen ipod nano which is recognized with no trouble. All the tests on the classic, with the exception of firewire, passed and the hard drive works fine. The classic also isn't recognized on 2 other Windows 7 computers. If I try to put the ipod in disk mode, it just says "ok to disconnect" without giving me any other options. Also, the ipod charges on both wall USB and the computers USB. I have also tried all 6 USB ports. I've searched the web for days and have tried everything I could find to fix this, to no avail though. If anyone knows anything and can help, please post whatever you think will work. Thank you!

When you plug in the iPod does it even appear in Device Manager?  See this article for more details.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1496
Otherwise, I have a feeling that the USB ports on the Netbook don't output enough power to allow the iPod to fully communiate properly with the Windows Vista O/S.

  • 5th gen Ipod not recognized and not charging on any computer.

    Hello
I have a 5th gen Ipod with an odd issue. I have an Ihome radio with Ipod dock in which my Ipod charges and plays everthing just fine. I usually just keep it there to charge and only hook up to my computer if I want to buy something or put other music on it. I tried syncing the other day and nothing happened, would not sync, charge, my computer would not even recognize it. I have tried 2 differnt cables, reset, have tried it with itunes started and not running on my vista computer and have also tried just to charge on a computer with XP that doesnt have Itunes installed. My daughter has in Ipod Touch that works just fine with both my cables and computers.
Any ideas of whats wrong with my 5th gen?
    Thanks

Try restarting your computer with your ipod plugged in. You might also try using a different USB port. If all else fails downgrade to itunes 6 here http://www.apple.com/support/

  • Can I set a time limit for usage on a 5th gen ipod touch

My daughter just got a 5th gen Ipod touch. Of course she is using it at times she shouldn't be. Is there a way to set a time limit for usage so she can be responsible for monitoring herself without us nagging all the time?

  • IHome weirdness with 5th gen iPod

I have both a 4th gen iPod and a 5th gen iPod and I find that my iHome that works beautifully with the 4th gen iPod works very strangely with the 5th gen... and it's not because I don't have the foot replacements for the inserts. I find that there is a noticably longer delay in waking up the 5th gen iPod from sleep than the 4th gen and I believe that the internal clock uses through the dock connector by the iHome doesn't take this into account. As a result, I often wake up to the internal beeper even though I have the iPod connected. Further, I find that the playlist that I go to sleep with is not the playlist that is used when the alarm goes off... it seems the iPod starts playing my entire song library. I don't know what the problem is... but I suspect that it's more the iPod difference than a problem with the iHome (particularly since it works so well with my 4th gen).
    Anybody have any ideas?

Yes and no... the iHome worked fine with my 4th gen iPod in that whatever playlist I had paused when I went to sleep would play when I woke up. For some reason, my 5G will just start playing the complete song library when I wake up. My point is, some iPods work, and some don't (the recent models having a problem).

  • 5th Gen iPod repair question

i have a 5th gen ipod that does not respond. ive tried everything, nothing seems to work, it wont even show up on my computer. im thinking there is something wrong with either the battery or main board. ive only had it for about 2 months so it should still be under warrenty and i dont see why apple wouldnt replace it for me but the real question is my front pannel around the screen is messed up kinda bad.. you can still see with the backlight on but still its messed up. Will they not replace my ipod because of this? im mailing it in, and i just dont want to be charged without knowing our penalized in any way.
5th Gen iPod with video   Windows XP

okay but the front is cosmetic damage, which the sun messed it up (i guess i will have to take the blame for that one) so will they not give me a new ipod because of the cosmetic damage?

  • How do I use 5th Gen iPod and 2009 Civic USB?

I tried everything I can think of to get my iPod working with my 2009 Civic. From what I've read in the manual, I just be able to plug it into the USB and the car finds it, displays the Honda "H" logo/mark on the screen and away I go. I wish it were that simple.
I have a 5th Gen iPod with verison 1.3 firmware. It's formatted for Windows so it's a FAT32 storage format. I restored the iPod and put the music I wanted back on it so I could test again and still no dice. I don't have another iPod to test with.
Is there something I missed? Anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

The problem ended up being the controller board/card/box (whichever of these) in the car that was malfuctioning. I gathered that they had to do some diagnostics, comparitive testing (with another vehicle and audio system known to work), and test my audio system before isolating and replacing the controller.
I bought my Honda Cerified Used, so it was all covered by the dealer and Honda. I asked what it would cost had the car not been Cerfited Used. I was given an estimate of $350 USD. I know labor alone was $198 USD.
So, if you are expericing the same issue of no connectivity between your Honda and i(Device) and your car DOES NOT display any sort of error message on the audio system, this may be your problem. If you wish to get it fixed without a warranty to cover it, the cost will neighbor $350 USD. An alternative and cheaper option is to buy a headphone to headphone jack audio cable, plugging one end into your AUX outlet (if equipped) and the other your i(Device). Plugging into the AUX outlet does not charge or let you control your i(Device) through the car stereo.
Thanks planb77 for responding to my post.
    Cheers.
