5th gen iPod...updates from PC to Mac

my ipod is formatted to a windows b/c my original computer was a pc. my pc's been having a lot of problems lately so i haven't been able to use my itunes to update my ipod. i've been using my friends 7.0 itunes with a mac to put new songs on my ipod. my ipod shows all my old songs plus the songs that i've gotten from his itunes, but when i update album art for my old songs, it won't show it on my ipod. it also won't let me update gapless playback for those songs either. my friend won't let me transfer my old songs to his comp from an external drive, so what i'm asking is am i going to have to reformat my ipod to his mac in order to get these updates and lose my old songs? or is there some kind of software i can use so i won't lose all my old songs?

Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes or play a purchased song, supply your account information, and sync the iPod.

  • ITunes7 & 5th gen iPod updating - is this possible solution? (winXP)

Downloaded iTunes 7 and you've gone through the 5 R's until your red in the face?
    * This probable solution 'stumbled upon' using a 60GB video. I have no idea if the process will work the same for nano. But if your desperate and have backed up your library... full steam ahead.
If you've noticed that your iPod does not show up in My Computer, but shows up in iTunes, and the new Update or Restore option within iTunes (Summary tab of a recognized iPod) doesn't work (choosing 'Update' gives you error 1417 and 'Restore' gives you error 1418 - whatever they mean) then give this a try:
    1. Restart your computer - just to make sure we're all on the same page
    2. Start up/Load iTunes
    3. Connect your iPod to your computer - it may take a little time for iTunes to connect to your device
    4. When the dialogue box pops up telling you that a new version of firmware (ver. 1.2) is available choose: INSTALL
    5. As iTunes shows you a progressive bar of 'installing' (the bar scrolls across again and again) use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option in your taskbar and stop "Apple iPod USB Device". The computer will then tell you that the device can now be removed
    6. "Installing" continues... plug in/connect iPod again. The "Install" continues like nothing's happened. Weird, huh?
    7. Apple logo and Update status bar should now appear on your dimmed iPod screen (because of no backlight)
    8. At this point, dialogue box pops up on computer to tell you that updating continues
    9. "Do Not Disconnect" symbol will then show on your iPod
    10. Process finishes after a time, and now the Summary tab says the iPod has been updated.
HA!!! If this is all that troubles you - HUZZAH! And I hope this helped.
Now that we've come this far... I've found that when I normally open iTunes and plug in my iPod to aunto-sync, I now get ERROR (-50) -> Mac needs to get a database online or something to tell me what these 'errors' mean so I don't freak out when I get one...
    1. Go BACK to the Summary tab or your recognized deive in iTunes. Now choose RESTORE. Make sure whatever is on your iPod can be replaced
    2. This part takes time
    3. Computer will pop with dialogue box saying that iPod is restored and being changed to factory settings
    4. Prompt then pops up for you to name your little iPod. At this stage you can choose to 'Auto-sync songs and vids when connected' or 'Auto-sync photos' and from which directory. It's up to you.
    5. iTunes will then thank you for registering your iPod. From this point, the files are copied to your device. Depending on how large your library is affects how long this process takes.
I hope this was helpful to you.
    Self-Built PC Windows XP

Didn't work for me, I tried two times.
Seems like the only way for itunes to recognize my ipod is to uninstall itunes, reboot, install itunes and voilà... but no matter what I do next with the ipod (try to upgrade it or not), next time itunes won't recognize the ipod.
I even went back to itunes 6, but no matter how clean the reinstallation was done, it always complained with: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
Apple please fix this!!! Update iTunes 7.0 ASAP!

  • 5th gen ipod does not connect to mac desktop or itunes

My ipod does not connect with my desktop or itunes (ie when I plug the ipod in using the original USB cable nothing happens--no charging no recognition that it has been connected). My nano does work with the same cable so I know it's not that. I've followed the support instructions resetting, downloading the latest software and restarting. I cannot, however, restore since the first step of the instruction is to connect the ipod and wait for it to show in the source list in itunes. It is also interesting that when I use the car charger the ipod does charge and shows the charging icon.
    Any suggestions?

I guess i can lend my voice to the conversation. my ipod "locks up" when i connect to my computer also. i just updated itunes and have not been able to connect. there is no ipod folder on my computer when i search through ""finder". i have to "reset" it after i disconnect to continue to play it. i have done everything short of "restoring" due to i have over 3000 songs and i'm unable to back up. the manuel refers to a disk to update. i can only play songs, and recharge. need help to.

  • ITunes claims my 5th gen ipod has old software, but won't let me update

I have two ipods... one an old 3rd gen scroll wheel ipod that just seemed to go kaput... it wasn't showing up in the iTunes source list or on my desktop. So I followed some directions on the apple site to try to restore it:
    "Step 1
    Delete the file using Terminal
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
    Type: sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext
    Press Return.
Enter the administrator account password when prompted.
    Quit Terminal.
Restart the computer (From the Apple menu, choose Restart).
    Step 2
    Reinstall iTunes
Download the latest version of iTunes from the iTunes download page.
    Install iTunes.
Restart the computer after the installation has completed.
    Connect iPod.
    Step 3
    Delete the iPod.plist file
Remove the following file in the your home directory and launch the iPod updater again
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ipod.plist"
Anyway none of this worked for my old ipod (I think it's dead) but here's my new problem. Since I did this I plugged in my new ipod, 5th gen black 60g, and I got an error message that said:
"Some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to the iPod "Honey" because your iPod software is too old. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update."
When I went to the Summary page the whole "Version" section is grayed out and it says "Your iPod is up to date."
What is going on and how can I fix it?

  • 5th Gen ipod "double clicks" through menus since update

I recently updated the firmware on my early 5th gen ipod from the original 1.0 to the latest version 1.2.1. Since doing so it has a very annoying issue. Almost every time I push the select button in the middle of the wheel, it does a double click. That is, I select Music -> Playlists and suddenly I'm IN a playlist rather than looking at the list of playlists. I back out and choose Albums and instead of looking at the list of albums, I'm in the All submenu. This is extra annoying when it doubleclicks down to the point it's playing a song when I was shooting for a different song.
Have other people seen this? Is this a known bug in the latest firmware? Since this never happened before the update I have to assume it's a bug and Apple really needs to fix this annoyance quickly. In the mean time, is there a way to roll back your firmware to a working version? I never had an issue with 1.0, and now I wish I hadn't updated since it introduced bugs and did nothing else.

  • How can I transfer iBooks from my 4th to 5th gen iPod Touch both running iOS 6, using iTunes 11?

I downloaded the e-book The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham directly onto my old 4th gen iPod Touch from interviewthemasters.com a while back so my Purchases in iTunes 11 still shows no books available to re-download.  _None_ of my iBooks content (e.g. bus route PDFs) show up _or_ seem to sync, even though I have Settings that all available apps sync their data _and_ back up into iCloud.  I even got to a PC, downloaded iTunes, restored from my 4th gen's backup right onto my 5th gen, and still nothing in the way of my iBooks content, though the first time I pulled it up, I saw them on the shelf for a split second...>:-|  What's going on?  Why won't it propagate to my new device via iCloud?  Nor can I find a way through iTunes 11 to get my content to my new iPod (yes, I have all authorized under the same Apple ID).  Please help!  All my annotations through iBooks are very valuable to me and I don't want to keep my old iPod and drag it out any time I want to reference my own notes on a book I bought!  Am I to believe Apple cares nothing for my personal data unless it's through their store, and extends entertainment industry shenanigans to disable their own apps with _my_ content garnered elsewhere, _presuming_ it "must" be content which can be found on the store?!  If so, how do I get control back of my own data?  Apple used to say "tough" if you wanted to re-download purchases.  Are personal effects like Notes and iBooks still a drop-stitch?  The larger issue of ignoring private content and disabling their ecosystem presuming content is illicit outside their store is pernicious to say the least, and if Apple officially declines to right that wrong I really will leave their ecosystem, and burn the path behind me.  I can't be the only person in this boat regarding cavalier ineptitude/negligence regarding basic functionality other than hooked into Apple's money machine.

To reiterate, the 80/10/10 book was purchased from interviewthemasters.com and worked perfectly as a e-book through iBooks including annotations, hilighting, etc.  It never syncs to my machine _or_ iCloud, so I cannot try your recommendation regarding the iTunes Book library, unless you can explain how to get it from my iPod into iTunes.  The fact Apple syncs only its store's content and disables syncing for my own independently procured content, particularly as the sole means of communicating with iPods, I find reprehensible and is a perfect example of screwing their customers and hobbling their devices for the supposed privilege of offering entertainment industry content since offered elsewhere far less restrictively and at higher quality (Spotify, anyone?).  In any case, if anyone can explain how I can get my own book onto a different iPod, I'd love to hear from you—and no, I'm not anxious to use shady PC utilities, and those well-reviewed don't support anything but music and movies.  I do not have access to a Mac, only my iPods and a PC, right now (I'm working on it!  Trust me, aside from wholly unnecessary shenanigans, Apple offers a vastly superior product!).

  • 5th Gen iPod Still Not Updating to Latest Software

Since my last qery I've not done much with my iPod but yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and go for it. I formatted my 5th Gen iPod in Windows and deleted all content from it.
After re-starting my PC iTunes started and recognised my iPod and started the update process. It downloaded and unzipped the software and started to update - farther than I've got before so things were looking up. Then "Error 1418..." again!!
My iPod seems to be destined to be stuck on version 1.2.3 firmware unless any of you kind and knowledgable people out there have any new ideas because the 5 R's a format and numerous update and restore attempts have all failed.
    Any suggestions please?
    P.S. Happy Easter!

  • 5th gen. ipod not recognized by Mac

My 5th generation 30 gb ipod is no longer recognized by my Mac running 10.3.9 and iTunes 7. I've tried all of the standard troubleshooting except for restore since it can't be recognized to be restored. When it's plugged into the computer, it's charging with an animated icon but the ipod never shows up on the desktop or in iTunes. Help!

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • 5th Gen iPod and 2nd gen Nano will connect to Mac, not found by iTunes

I bought a brand new MacBook running OSX 10.4.9, and I cannot get my 5th gen iPod video nor my 2nd gen Nano to be recognized by iTunes. The computer recognizes that there are two drives-- they come up on the desktop. But iTunes will not notice them, let alone play music from them. These iPods are mostly used with Windows 2000 PC laptops, and I'm connecting them via USB.
    What should I do?
    Thanks,

    Hey jtom234412,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like your device is not detected in iTunes for Windows. The following resource may help resolve this issue:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
Furthermore, if your device is in recovery mode (displaying an iTunes symbol, with a plug), see the relevant information under Step 5.
    Thanks,

  • I just bought a 5th gen Ipod from someone and now it wont turn on/boot up

I just bought a 5th gen Ipod from someone and restored it to factory setting I then uploaded my music to it and ejected it but may have unplugged it to soon. Now the ipod just keeps trying to turn on but doesn't and it won't respond to manual reset has anyone had this problem and what was done to fix it? thank you for your time I would really appriciate it.

The 5th gen iPod "classic" was the first "video" iPod.  It's video capability is more limited, and supported video resolution is lower, typically only 320x240.  Even if the video is standard def (SD), and not HD, it is probably at least 640x480.
Also, current iTunes Store video content (such as TV shows and movies) uses DRM (copy protection).  The 5th gen iPod was designed before the iTunes Store started selling video content (as it does now); I don't think it supports the DRM technology.
If you have video content that is not DRM'd and plays in iTunes (such as video podcasts), you may be able to use the convert command in iTunes.  Select the item on a list in iTunes.  From the iTunes menu bar
File -> Create New Version -> Create iPod or iPhone Version
That version may play on your iPod, so iTunes will sync it.

  • Connecting 5th gen Ipod to itunes/updater???

I bought a 5th gen Ipod three weeks ago and haven't been able to use it yet. It apperars in windows but will not show up in itunes. I have done everything suggested on the support site and spoken to support staff twice and they tell me to send it back, i want to avoid this if poss.
The only thing I cant do is to restore it, as when I open the updater program it just asks for an ipod to be connected - even when showing on the system - therefore I can't run it.
I have all the latest itunes & updater, windows xp pro sp2, usb2 and all the recommended spec.
Has anyone else had this problem and is ther any way of fixing it. I have spent hours on this so far.

I am truly in a state of elation today after finally getting my 5g 30gb iPod to work. It's been three months and two pods since it all began, but here's how I did it (I really hope this helps someone - if it does pass it on, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of people out there suffering as a result of these **** devices):
1, (I'm not sure this had any relevance - I wouldn't do it unless the rest doesn't work), but I reformatted it in windows FAT 32 (Right click ipod in 'my computer' drives list, format, complete format), don't worry if ipod then goes black & white with folder icon & message www.apple/support/ipod.
2, (Again, I'm not sure if this had any relevance, but you can change this back). Change the drive letter. To do this go to: Control panel, Administrative tools, computer management. In the left window select storage, disk management and when you select that the right window splits into two. In the lower half is all of your drives, right click the ipod and there should be an option to ‘change drive letter’
    3. Remove ipod via the 'Safely remove hardware' icon near the clock. Uninstall all iPod updaters & iTunes via the 'add/remove programs' section in 'control panel'.
    4. Disable any Anti Virus (I have AVG freeware), Firewall or Spyware software inc, Windows Firewall (personally, I think this is the common element among us and something I didn't realise was running as I had other software with a firewall).
    5. Restart. Install iPod updaters & iTunes via your original disk. Restart.
    6. When completely restarted (leave a few minutes) open the iPod updater, only plug in your ipod when prompted - At this point I got a box with my serial no and other ipod details in and the option to restore, but hit the restore button and it said something I don't remember, but was an error message. Anyway, I couldn't disconnect the pod so pulled out the cable (not recommended I know) and restarted the computer again and repeated step 6 again (removing the Ipod first). This time the restore button worked - it took about 10 minutes and automatically opened itunes when done and asks you for a name for it.
    7. I already had the latest iPod updater downloaded (thereby not having to go online without AV/firewall running) so installed it and updated the pod.
    8. Close everything, disconnect ipod and re-activate your Anti Virus, Firewall and Spyware software inc, Windows Firewall and restart.
Hopefully the ipod will again open itunes when connected. I think the real issue is the AV/Firewall software running while installing, many are suggesting it as a cause but no one knows for definite - I read somewhere Apple are aware that their software has issues when installed with AV/Firewall software running, but no specifics or information is ever given buy so-called help staff!!!
    Good luck.

  • I have a 30 Gig 5th Gen IPOD It plays but there is no sound from the head phones and when its docks can anyone help

I have a 30 Gig 5th Gen IPOD It plays but there is no sound from the head phones and when its docks can anyone help

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Questions regarding upgrade from 4th gen to 5th gen iPod

I recently received a new 80 gig 5th gen iPod and had 2 questions regarding it and my old 40 gig 4th gen. PC meets minimun requirements and is running XP Pro.
    1) Do I need to do anything before synching the new 5th gen iPod with my existing Library (i.e. uninstall iPod Updater for 4th gen)?
    2) If I don't need to uninstall the 4th gen Updater, can I run both iPods off the same Library, same user (obviously not simultaneously)?
    tia - joggy
    N/A   Windows XP Pro

    Hey, joggy!
    1) No, I don't believe you do. Be sure to disconnect the 4th gen iPod before connecting the 5th generation iPod to the computer.
    2) Yes, you can.
There are basically two methods with managing muleiple iPods on one computer:
Method 1 - Create different Windows users accounts for each resgistered iPod on this computer.
Method 2 - Create a playlist in iTunes for each iPod.
To make Method 2 work, connect one of your iPods, and click on it in the left-source panel.
Under the "Music" tab, and set your option for a specific playlist(s) under the "Sync Music" option.
Do the same with your other iPod; not connected at the same time, though.
For more details on this matter, check out Apple's Support article about it:
How to manage multiple iPods using one computer
    I hope that helps you.
