5th Gen Scroll Wheel Unresponsive

Just curious if anyone else has experienced an unresponsive scroll wheel. Problem exists only when attempting to navigate menus---menu, play, and back and forth work and respond as expected. Whenever I attempt to navigate by scrolling (running finger arouund the wheel)it is bad. I guess an easy way to describe it is that it seems that either the system is slow in responding--it almost sticks, or that there are "dead spots" on the wheel. Just curious--I am about to take it to the Apple Store for an exchange if they even have them in stock (I ordered mine from Apple).
Also, I did update the firmware on the nano as there is one available and the problem still exists.

I've had the same problem since the day it was delivered. At first I just thought it needed a full charge and to be reset, so that's what I did. Made no difference whatsoever. All the buttons have to be pressed multiple times before the iPod responds. I also updated the software to the latest version and when I can control it, the iPod plays music well and everything else is ok. Must just be a hardware defect or something.

  • 5th gen iPod wheel unresponsive

5th generation ipod, spent most of it's life in a dock.  Plays fine in dock through remote.  Today took it off dock to use with headphones and it does nothing.  The wheel clicks but nothing happens.  Toggled hold, did 'select' and 'menu' to reset, but still nothing what gives?

I don't have anything else, as a remedy...  odd that the click wheel is generally unresponsive, EXCEPT for those two buttons when you do a reset.
The fact that your iPod's hard drive (plus everything except click wheel) is fully functional gives your iPod some value.  You can sell it on eBay as broken, with a working hard drive.  Most iPods (with a hard drive) that are broken, are broken because of a bad hard drive; someone will want it, just for the working hard drive.  OR, you can look for an iPod (of the same type) with a broken hard drive, and swap in your iPod's hard drive.  OR, find one with a working click wheel, to replace your iPod's broken click wheel.  OR, you can buy a mini- hard drive case (sold on eBay) for the iPod's 1.8-inch "ZIF" hard drive, and use it as a tiny external USB drive.

  • IPod Nano 5th gen - Scroll Wheel

    Hi,
I have a rather weird problem. It's not that my buttons don't work - they do. It's the scrolling itself I have problems with. I can use "forward" and "backward" and "play/pause" and "menu" buttons just fine. Trouble comes when I need to sroll up or down (to search a song or turn the volume up or down) and it simply won't do it.
I've cleaned the wheel with a cotton swab dipped in 80% alcohol to make sure there is no oil/debris. I've read it has to do with the way the iPod recognizes pressure on the wheel so I make sure I only press the centre button when I wake it up or unlock it. I've done reset and factory restore - with no results.
Once in a while, maybe one out of five times, when I unlock the iPod (release the hold button or whatever would one call it) the wheel will scroll for about 10 - 15 seconds and then it will stop again.
It's very frustrating because I know the wheel if functioning (since sometimes it will scroll for that few seconds after unlocking) so it's not a hardware problem.
User error... well, I'm pretty sure I can scroll up and down alright, because I've had the iPod for some 3 years now and it's always worked just fine until about a week ago when the problem I described above appeared.
If it was a software problem, a factory restore would fix that, wouldn't it?
Since it's not in warranty, I removed the wheel, cleaned underneath and replaced it, but problem persists. It scrolls fine, but only that 10 seconds after I unlock it, once in about five tries. Rest of the time it unlocks and I can go up and down the menu tree, but can not scroll up or down in the actual menu or album list.
Please, tell me my music player isn't done and that there is something else I can try?

  • Scroll wheel unresponsive

I have seen this posted elsewhere, but Apple service did not help in this case.
The scroll wheel was/is unresponsive except to reset. I did the 5 r's. This eventually left the unit in a select language state but with a scroll wheel that would not select a language). I sent this 2nd gen nano into Apple service, and got the same unit back with a polite letter saying nothing was wrong and I should have done the 5 r's. It came back working... so OK, we lived with the mystery.
It worked for a month and then failed again in exactly the same way. Is there a way to DEMAND a new unit replacement to resolve a flaky failure mode, something not unique since it is reported here by others? Its still within the service period now, but if I bounce this back and forth with Apple service, it will not be.

  • IPod 1st Gen (Scroll wheel) not recognized by iTunes

iPod 1st Gen (with scroll wheel) will not connect to iTunes 12.1 on MacBookPro.  Charging when I plug it in, want to add music to it, but iTunes will not recognize it.  Anyone have any suggestions or does anyone know if this iPod is no longer supported by iTunes?

  • Ipod touch 5th gen steering wheel controls

    Hi,
I have an Ipod touch 5th gen running ios 7.1.1 and a Pioneer x3600dab car stereo.
I cannot change track using my steering wheel.  Volume works.
This is the same with Bluetooth connection and direct via USB.
Has anyone found a work around for this issue?  I know the track change works because elsewhere on the stereo unit the buttons work.
    Thanks

Have you went to Pioneer's support site?
Using the communities search box in the upper right you can try searching for pioneer and the car manufacturer if it came with the car.

  • 4th Gen scroll wheel not working

The wheel hasn't been working for the past couple days. It shows that its charging (at this very minute) but when I click the menu, or any other button it doesn't respond. If I slide the hold button over to the left, the backlight comes on, when I slide it back to unlock it, the light goes off, but still doesn't respond. I've restored it several times and it will work fine right after everything has synced back to the iPod, but a few minutes later it wont respond to anything I do.
    I'm guessing it's dead...
    Any ideas?

Sounds like your scroll wheel simply broke.
I know it doesn't appear to be working, but lets TRY a reset. Slide hold on and off, and hold Menu and center buttons for 6-10 seconds (an Apple logo should come up).

  • My 5th gen Nano wheel doesn't work.

It won't advance my songs or get the menu. Sometimes I have to push REALLY hard on it and it will work, but its getting worse, what can I do?

If none of the 5 R's are able to resolve the issue, it's likely a hardware issue, meaning you'll need to have the iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party service.

  • ITunes claims my 5th gen ipod has old software, but won't let me update

I have two ipods... one an old 3rd gen scroll wheel ipod that just seemed to go kaput... it wasn't showing up in the iTunes source list or on my desktop. So I followed some directions on the apple site to try to restore it:
    "Step 1
    Delete the file using Terminal
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
    Type: sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext
    Press Return.
Enter the administrator account password when prompted.
    Quit Terminal.
Restart the computer (From the Apple menu, choose Restart).
    Step 2
    Reinstall iTunes
Download the latest version of iTunes from the iTunes download page.
    Install iTunes.
Restart the computer after the installation has completed.
    Connect iPod.
    Step 3
    Delete the iPod.plist file
Remove the following file in the your home directory and launch the iPod updater again
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ipod.plist"
Anyway none of this worked for my old ipod (I think it's dead) but here's my new problem. Since I did this I plugged in my new ipod, 5th gen black 60g, and I got an error message that said:
"Some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to the iPod "Honey" because your iPod software is too old. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update."
When I went to the Summary page the whole "Version" section is grayed out and it says "Your iPod is up to date."
What is going on and how can I fix it?

  • 5th gen and docks

    Silly question but...
I have two ipods, an apple dock and a new universal dock. Both the ipods let out a nice little beep when they are connected to the older style dock, but don't make a sound with the new universal dock. Anyone got any idea as to what the difference is?
    Thanks
    G4 MDD Dual 1.25 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Sorry if unclear.
Both ipods are the same model. 20GB, 5th gen, click wheel. They both make the chirp when connected to the old dock. They both don't make the chirp when connected to the uni. dock.

  • How to copy pre-installed games from a 5th gen classic to a click-wheel nano?

I have an older 5th Gen Classic iPod (80gb) and my sister has a slighter newer iPod Nano (not sure on the specifics but they're both click-wheel).
Is there any way for me to copy my pre-installed click-wheel games (Brick, Solitaire, etc) to her nano (which only has Tetris)? And now that we can't buy new games, we're both at a loss for what to do
We'd like to share games but I can't figure out where my pre-installed games are in order to transfer them, and there doesn't seem to be any way for me to backup the games on my iPod through iTunes

Those games are part of the iPod's firmware itself. They can't be moved or deleted.

  • Ipod 5th gen, video 30bg, will sync/restore, won't play

I am running Windows 7, with all updates (as of 3/14/2014) have itunes 11.1.5.5 showing no available updates. When I plug into the USB port, the ipod gets recognized, Itunes starts. I can see the files on the ipod. I have reset the ipod and restored. Same problem. When I drill down to the actual file I want to listen to, it doesn't play. On the screen the icon changes from pause to the arrow for play, the index line never advances. You can hit the select button, use the scroll wheel to advance through the file, and hit play again, but no noise. There isn't noise if in the dock (which other ipods and iphones work with in the house) there is no noise if the headphones are plugged in. i was thinking harddrive, so I replaced it. couldn't get the new one to function. When the new harddrive was in the unhappy face would come up. I could force into disk mode, in hopes of restoring it, but in disk mode, neither windows and hence itunes would recognize it as an ipod. I put the old hard drive back in thinking maybe I damaged the cable, but it came right up, but with the same problem, it won't play the sounds... I replaced the Zif cable just in case, still the same...
i've sure seen lots of Ipod 5th gen video for sale on Ebay, compared to the 4th that I had, which I broke the scroll wheel cable on, but never had such problems with it. Any thoughts out there from someone who might know what it's doing? It seems weird that it loads the music files, and deletes the music files but won't play them. The only other thing I can think of perhaps is the battery too low to spin the hard drive up to play? It does seem to be a very small (physically) battery compared to the 4th gen... but it is thicker...
When I got it it was doing the low power thing, so I did all the steps to re-charge, and restore, but it won't play the files... Thanks for any thoughts!
    Jesse

It sound like you did some good troubleshooting.  Thanks for providing the details.  I don't think a problem like this is related to the battery.
With a 5th gen iPod (early version) that has a 30GB hard drive, it may have problems using a larger capacity hard drive.  That may explain the different problem you had when you replaced the hard drive, if you changed the capacity.
Try the following test.  Do another Restore from the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes.  At the end of the Restore process, choose NOT to sync anything automatically.
Go to the iTunes Store and download a free song.  You can find the current free songs by clicking Free on iTunes under QUICK LINKS, on the iTunes Store Home screen.
Manually load that ONE song on the iPod.  Disconnect iPod and try to play that one song.  Does this same problem occur?

  • Connecting a 5th Gen Ipod to 2010 Hyundai Tuscon

Im using a 5th Gen ipod with my new 2010 Hyundai Tuscon. The car is equipped with 2 jacks one is a aux jack for a 2.5mm headphone jack and the other is a USB jack. The dealership gave me a special cable that is fused together. One end has a 2.5mm male plug while the other is a male USB connector which plugs into the car stereo. The other end connects to the bast of the IPOD.
Ive been struggling with this for sometime now months actually.. The issue is.. While my ipod is plugged into the car stereo using the dealership provided cable the sound is dampened pretty much sounds like crap.. Lack of bass sometimes too much treble and sometimes not enough and most times lack of volume. I find myself cranking the main stereo up just to get good sound levels.
At first I was really disheartened as with my previous car it had a 200 watt stereo system in it with infinity speakers and had the same kind of ipod connection and the sound was phenomenal.
However with the Tuscon the sound as I said earlier.. sounds like crap.. I have even went as far as replacing the factory speakers with Alpines which got good reviews.. The sound did improve for the most part but still lacking.
Last night I tried a few experiments and have finally nailed it. The things I tried were:
    1) Using a regular male to male 2.5mm plug to plug into the headphone port on the ipod then connect to the aux port of my car stereo and then used my regular IPOD USB sync cable to plug into the base for data exchange between the car and the IPOD=Unfortunately The Tuscon didnt like that.. it will not connect with the ipod both ports on the car must be utilized somehow at the same time which is ********!
    2) THE WINNING CHOICE= I just stuck with using the 2.5mm male to male cord and connected my IPOD direct to the aux port and omitted the USB connectivity. The sound now has increased 10 maybe even 20 fold.. it actually sounds better than my old car stereo.. The only draw back and I will miss it is that w/o the USB connectivity between the car and th IPOD I will not be able to control the IPOD from my steering wheel or see on the LCD panel of the car stereo what im actually playing.
I did rig the ipod in a cup holder at my side so I can see the ipod screen and use the scroll wheel so im not completely lost.. I just weighed my options $500 + dollars for a new audio system or a rigged ipod to dramatically increase sound quality.. I went with option 2. I think i will be getting an ipod touch eventually though since it has voice control which would be really helpful when you are driving.
Anyways Sorry for the long rant.. I thought I would post this here in case there were other Hyundai Tuscon owners out there beating their brains out like I have been to increase the sound quality. of the factory stereo

  • Replacement Question: Ipod 20G 4th Gen Vs. Ipod 30G 5th Gen

The 20G non-color display Ipod that I owned for 18 months died mysteriously last Sunday. I lifted it out of the charge dock after it fully charged and the click wheel had become completely unresponsive. The video display was fully functional.... but otherwise it wouldn't go. I tried resetting about 5 times in all and did full restore and nothing changed. It's pretty much dead for no reason. (And no, I didn't buy the Apple Care plan because I hadn't expected it to crap out on me after just 18 months.
I considered having it repaired by Apple only to find out that Apple won't repair it. Or the guy on the phone says that they don't repair anything that doesn't have a care plan. (Sidebar: This guy was the rudest support agent I've ever, ever spoken to Apple. He actually said 'well, I don't know what to say to someone who didn't bother to read the fine print.' I hung up on him right about then.)
So, now I'm faced with replacing it. None of the other non-Apple brands appeal to me and I've discovered that really, as sad it is- I can't live without my Ipod. But I'm not sure whether to buy a 20g refurb or just bite the bullet and spend the additional 80 bucks for the 5th gen 30g.
Reasons Why I Should Get A Refurb:
*I have all the 20g accessories (charge dock, armband) and can't afford and don't want to replace all that stuff with 30g stuff.
    * I have absolutely no interest in the ability to watch videos on Ipod on a 2" screen. I suppose this is blasphemy but I'm a simple girl when it comes to her tech. It needs to play my music and occassionally store a .doc file- it doesn't need to be tricked out.
    * It's 80 bucks cheaper than the new 30g.
    * I'm still in love with my 20g even though it clearly doesn't love me.
    Reasons To Get a 30G:
    * Apple is/has phasing out the 4th gen and all of its accessories. I will be relegated to sale bins and combing Ebay for "vintage" 4th gen stuff very soon.
    * Apple Care Plan: Okay, I've seen the light- but can I even get a plan with a refurb?
    * The refurb could crap out on me within mere minutes of it finding its way to me.... Unlikely but considering how fast mine died, I'm gunshy.
    * Smaller Ipod- the 4th gens aren't that large but I'm told the 5th gens are less clunky.
In truth, I'm not sure what to do and I'd appreciate input and feedback from others on your experience with any of the issues in the above post.
