5th generation IPOD not being recognized by my Macbook

I recently purchased an Ipod Touch and it works fine. Now my 5th gen video Ipod is not being recognized by my macbook. I've tried it all restart, disk mode, checked the cable, switchd the port but nothing seems to help. It just does not appear on my macbook it will charge on a home or car charger but not through my mac book as if it doesn't exist!!

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting? Did he give you the cable that was originally included witht the Shuffle? I ask because if you are using a 3G/4G cable it will not work with the 2G Shuffle.
Have you worked through all the sugguestions here as necessary?

5th Gen iPod w/Updater 1.3. iTunes Ver. 7.6.2.9
Two weeks ago purchased music with no problems; sync'ed library w/iPod w/no problems.
Purchased music a few days ago- no problems. Started iTunes today to sync iPod and got msg saying registry values missing for certain drivers for burning discs, etc. Cause could be from other programs that burn discs etc.(???)
Plugged in iPod, got the tone beep and then a message that iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod attached. Disconnect and reattach. Did this several times - still doesn't work. I can play tunes from my iTunes library and my iPod OK - just can't sync them up. Anyone got a solution??

Well,after digging into the 1000's of msgs regarding problems similar to mine I found something I thought might help at (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538). I teied it and found that my drivers were OK so that wasn't the problem. While trying things I suddenly got the iPod recognized and it started sync'ing. I think the solution to my issue was to connect the iPod first; wait for it to be recognized by the pc (the tone beep) then go thru the acceptance of iTunes agreement, etc., iTunes then opened and the sync process began. I tried it with iTunes open and it won't work. It sounds like a hokey way to do it but at least I have my library and iPod in sync.
My next problem to work on is there seems to be registry problem with iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's. Got to figure that out and fix.
Since I do have CopyTrans I may just re-install a back-level of iTunes and copy my iPod into the new iTunes library.

I have a similar issue - my iPod nano connects and is visible in Device Manager yet invisible in My Computer and iTunes. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to try and solve this myself, all in vain.
Mine is a nano 4G. I've been using it for quite some time without the slightest problem. I have been using WINAMP instead of iTunes to manage my darling nano.
Then, one fine day I bought a new computer and the nano would not show up in My Computer, though the nano display shows "Do not disconnect". On my old computer it worked (and still works) absolutely fine with win XP as well as with win7 (the later I currently use on my new/problematic computer, which I bought last summer and that's how long I've had this problem).
Of course, after several first attempts I gave up and installed iTunes. I've tried using the Apple support article "iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows":
- reset
- fully charged,
- cable works fine on two other computers
- in normal or disk mode makes no difference
- tried to find anything useful in the diagnostics mode
- reinstalled iTunes several different times since then to the latest version
- I've unplugged every other USB device except for my mouse and keyboard and tried several different USB ports on my motherboard (USB 3.0 and conventional), as well as trying different USB- related options in my BIOS.
- I've never used any Mac with this ipod
- I've tried fiddling with the win7 Services by stopping and restarting them and of course
- uninstalling the iPod drivers in Device Manager. After such an uninstall the ipod would automatically be recognised and "ready for use", i.e. being invisible in My Computer.
- Attempted to find any possible third-party conflict with msconfig or the possibility that my ipod is being confused for a network drive (for which I've disconnected my HDD, leaving only my SSD with the OS).
Sometimes, iTunes would note that iPod service (or something, can't remember exactly) failed to install properly and asked to try and repair it. I would click YES! and voila - no change! The ipod would rarely show up in iTunes on my problematic computer like this:
iTunes would warn me that the nano would need restoring so I would try and do it on my haunted machine upon which iTunes would freeze like you seen in the picture.
Despite this, I've updated and restored the nano on my father's computer to the latest version without any problems. This though, did not solve my problem in any way.
I can load music to my nano through my old computer (which for me is a real pain and hassle) and the gadget works normally in terms of its disconnected functionality.
I've taken my nano to the local service for repair and they said it was fine. Mercifully, they didn't charge for the diagnostics service (gee, thanks for not ripping me off!).

That is my sad story as far as I can remember. It's most likely something with the drivers or something along those lines though I'm out of ideas at this point.

I just bought a ipod shuffle generation 2, and i went ahead and installed itunes 7.02. I then connected the ipod, but windows did not ask me to install any new software. I then went to Device Manager and looked to see if the ipod was being recognized, and it shows up as a yellow question mark called unknown device. I tried to reinstall the drivers, but when windows does a driver scan, it says the following...
"The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

I have no idea what Dell or Apple told you, so we'll start from the beginning.
First read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 I am assuming since you talked to Dell your USB Driver is up-to-date. Reload your USB Driver anyway follwing the steps in this article.
Next disconnect any USB Device you have connected other than your keyboard and mouse.
Connect your iPod to a USB port on the rear of your computer and see if your computer can recognize it. If it can, right click on the iPod and change the driver letter to a higher letter (M or P) and then reformat your iPod (FAT32 format).
If iTunes can now see your iPod, Restore it.

I have a weird problem, my 30 gig 5th generation Ipod is not recognized by my computer or itunes. This is the last thing it happen, I was working on a client house for days, so my ipod's battery was completely dead, I was kind of desperate, so I thought that I could plug it to my client's mac just to recharge, but nothing happened. So days later I got back home and my windows PC will not recognized or charge the ipod at all. I got it charge and works perfect with my Ihome radio. I tried rebooting the Ipod, I tried resetting it to be in disk mode with not a problem, I tried changing the USB port, I did connected my friends Ipod and connected right away, so the wire connector is OK, I tried a different wire connector just in case, I tried connecting the ipod to a different PC.... I kind of running of ideas here. The ipod works great but I would live to download some new tunes to it... Any ideas. I cannot restore or upgrade firmware because ipod is not recognized by the computer....
The thing I am trying right now is installing the latest Itunes and see what happens. I have windows Pro SP3 recently updated. Your help would be greatly appreciated."

I am having the same problem. Sorry I'm not going to be of any help. But I hope someone gives you some recommendations cause I really want to get mine fixed. My iPod did the exact same thing. It was dead and I tried to use my car charger for the first tim and it did nothing. Then I plugged it in to a friends computer and nothing. I can only charge it on a speaker dock. And no computer recognizes that it's connection when I use the USB cable.

Tonight, I noticed on the computer that iTunes says it is supporting three devices not four, any thoughts on how to fix this? One is called Kimberly's iPod the other is Jenae's iPod. Jenae's iPod is the one not being recognized by the computer and has to keep being manually fixed, it won't sync automatically. Should I still try changing the name on iTunes and assume it didn't pick it up the first time.

Hello, I am asking if anyone knows/has had a problem with the 3G iPods not beign recognized by iTunes or Finder. This is an all of the sudden problem and has caught me by surprise. Have done all trouble shooting tech a through Apples and still have not resolved issues on Windows and itunes not detecting my Ipod nano 5th generation device. Tried restoring the device manually using disk mode and still not being detected by the computer. Device is our of warenty as when service repair charges are $125.00 dolars more than I paid for this device. There must be some way to restore the entire device to factor settings without having to be connected to itunes and Windows. I wish I could connect but again device is not being read. I have another Ipod that is 8GB instaed of 16GB and it works fine. The sad thing about this situation is that my 9year old daughter worked hard doing delivering fliers for a long time to save her money to buy this 16 GB 5th generation Nano. Otherwise the Ipod works well but will not syncronize songs as it is not being detected. Maybe this is a result of corrupt files that got onto my daughters Ipod somehow and thus causing it not the be detwected through the USB connection thus as a result not be understoud as a working device through Windows and itunes. If anyone can help me out there including itune techs that would be well appreciated, but for now my daughter is not able to add new or delete any songs on her ipod as well pictures, and everything. Try changing the cord. I could NOT get my computer to recognize my iPod 5th Gen until I read somewhere that different apple devices use different cords. I was inadvertently using my iPad cord and that caused my computer to not recognize my ipod.

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components

- Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause
