5th or 6th generation question...

Hi,
I am based in the UK and want to buy a 80gb video ipod, many websites are marketing 6th generation but Amazon (UK best price) and others are selling as 5th generation, i assume there must be some difference??
Thanks
Michael

There is no such thing as a 6th generation iPod.
There is a revised 5th generation often referred to as a "late 2006 model", or a "5.5 generation".
If you're looking at the 80gb version, it will be the latest - regardless where you purchase. The early version of the 5g was only available in 30gb and 60gb sizes - the 80gb capacity was introduced with the "late 2006" release.
Cheers!

  • Will cables CAT6a (Shielded Twisted Pair) work (will the grounding work?) with Airport Extreme (5th and 6th generation) ? I can see a little metal edges on the Airport Extreme 6th generation, is that the grounding for STP CAT6a cables?

I recently had to change the cabling for my house and since I would have to buy all new, I used CAT6a cables, and I noticed that they are all Shielded Twisted Pair (STP), which meand that they have an extra layer of protection against interferences. The RJ45 Connectors are all made of metal on these cables.
The main router in my house will be a 6th generation Ariport Extreme, and I noticed that on the Airport Connectors, there are to metal edges on the RJ45 female. Is that the groudinging for the STP cables? I noticed the same metal edges on the Airport Extreme 5th generation.
    Thank you,

Yes, but the power cable on the AE has no gnd pin so there is no actual grounding.. cables should only be grounded at one end anyway.. but the metal tabs are linked to the metal frame of the AE or TC..
At least in all the models up to AC .. it is still out of my reach cost wise. As I would have to pull it apart and plug my meter in there.. still they will eventually start coming in for repair.

  • IPod nano 5th and 6th generation battery

I've both iPod nano 5th and 6th gen which i kept them brand new in box for years. Today, I took them out to charge and it seemed like the charging takes forever. Once I turn off the power supply, I'm unable to turn them too. Is this a case of dead battery? Anyone knows how I can save them? Thanks.

Lithium Polymer batteries need to be exercised with a power cycle once per month. You will need to have the batteries replaced.

  • 6th generation to 5th generation network

I need some advice.  I need more signal strength in my house in my wireless network.  Currently I have a 5th generation extreme with time capsule and a 3rd generation in another part of the house.  It keeps dropping.  Can I just add a 6th generation extreme without time capsule to the back of the 5th I have or should I just replace it with a new 2Tb 6th generation?  Thanks.....I'm assuming it should help with my network.  If I get a new one I would put the old time capsule to replace my 3rd generation...and then is there a way to turn off the backup on that one.  Hope this makes sense.

The basics make sense.. a Gen5 Time Capsule is new AC one.. so I am not sure what this is.
Currently I have a 5th generation extreme with time capsule and a 3rd generation in another part of the house.
Give us the actual model numbers.. A1xxx from the base or what the AIrport Utility tells you in the full summary screen.
(Hold the option key down then Double click the icon in the utility).
If you have serious wireless issues adding another apple router may help or may not.. it is never simple to say Yes.. or No.
If you have an apple store nearby go and buy one and test it.. then you will know.. that suck and see trial is the only surefire method of finding out.
    Apple have 14day return period.
If you currently connect the airports by wireless I would strongly recommend using ethernet or EOP adapters and setting up a roaming network.. not extend wireless. It is faster and far superior method.
You can move whatever you currently have around to find the best location. And try to use 5ghz as it is less subject to interference if you are in an area over used by 2.4ghz.

  • When my ipod nano 6th generation is on shuffle, it plays only songs from a few artists for a time, then moves on to play songs from other artists. Any ideas how to get it to mix up the songs a little more so i don't have to hear songs more than once?

In a car ride, we hear the same songs twice even though there is over 24 hours of music on it

Well, shut my mouth!  There was a similar question over to the right about a 6th generation nano repeating over and over again -- I read the answer to that one, followed the instructions, and holy crap, it's back to normal.
Is there a name for this when you end up replying to your own aggravating question?  That's what I did.  Now I can go out and listen.  It's only 91 degrees.  Heaven. Thanks, Apple.

  • My ipod nano 6th generation will not turn on.

My iPod nano (6th generation) will not turn on. I have charged it (attached to my computer) for 30 minutes. I have tried to reset it (held down Wake and Volume Down for 8 seconds)- no response. I have factory restored it (through iTunes)- no response. It shows up as connected to my computer and will sync in iTunes, but the display on the iPod will not turn on. Any ideas?

    Hey s.mccarter2010,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you have tried a lot of things and the iPod still will not turn on. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
    iPod won't turn on
If you have tried the solutions above and iPod still won't turn on, check the following:
Make sure iPod is the only device in your FireWire or USB chain. Disconnect everything but the mouse, keyboard, and your iPod, then see if it will turn on.
Make sure you are using the FireWire or USB cable that came with your iPod, and that the cable is in good condition.
Try connecting iPod to the built-in port of a different computer to see if that works. Note: If using a portable computer, make sure it is plugged in to a power source and that the lid or display is open. If the lid is closed the computer may go into either standby, sleep, or hibernation mode and iPod will not charge properly.
If you still can't turn iPod on after performing these steps, it may need to be repaired. You can arrange for repair at the iPod Service Website.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Will there be an iPod touch 6th generation in the near future?

Hi there, I am a proud iPod user and around two years ago I upgraded my iPod from a 2nd generation to a 5th generation. However, this particular iPod was not purchased at an Apple Store, it was purchased at a pawn shop and claimed it was " never opened". I should have trusted my instincts but I was thinking "hey a cheaper price and its new!" Obviously I could not get AppleCare because it wasn't purchasee at an Apple Store, and it is now bugging out Two years later which wouldn't be under apple care anyway. So I have been doing research on the iPod 6th genreaction thinking that when it came out that I should upgrade, IF it came out. I've been hearing rumors that apple is discontinuing the iPod FOR GOOD. I find this hard to believe but I guess now everyone listens to music on their iphones. Anyway, I am conflicted to just buy a brand new iPod 5 or if I should wait for an ipod 6, but will there even be one? Am I just wasting my time for something that is not even being created? I just don't know if I should try to get a good deal on one or if I should wait another couple of months. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Sorry, only Apple knows if there's a 6th generation iPod.
We users like yourself are not in the loop.

  • 6th Generation Classic - External Speakers

Previously, I had a 5th Generation Classic iPod (60GB) that when connected to external speakers, had an option (within the Speakers menu) to show large album cover artwork during song play.  And when a song was playing, the album cover, on a black background, filled the display.
I'm now using a 6th Generation Classic (120GB) and the Speakers menu does not offer the "large album cover while playing" option. I've search throughout the various menus, and so far, have not found such a setting.
Can this be done on a 6th Generation?      (Is so, where's it selected?)

Maybe you should post i the ipod classic forum.

  • 6th generation classic doesn't have full screen static cover art feature

my old 5th generation ipod classic had a function to display the cover art in the entire field of the 2.5 inch screen while playing the song.....i went into the a local apple store and asked the rep if the 6th generation classic had the same functionality.....after tooling around trying for 15 minutes to find it, two guys couldn't......does anyone know if the 6th gen ipod classic let's you display the image in the whole 2.5 inch screen while the song in playing, or is this a limitation of the new "cover flow" feature?

Maybe you should post i the ipod classic forum.

  • IPod nano 6th generation jumps some songs

My 6th generation iPod touch in certain songs, it jumps to others I guess because it can`t play them. I called the Apple Support and the replace it for a new one.
And now this new one it does the same stuff. I search for those songs that can`t be played and I looked the format and all of my songs have the same, Audio MPEG layer 3.
I also tried to restore it and I did it twice but the problem persists.
    What can I do?
    Thanks

I am having huge problems synching my new Nano 6th Gen to my Mac while 2 other earlier Ipods work perfectly. My problem relates to the fact that I use smart playlists and their contents get all messed up on the new Ipod when I try synching. Symptoms include both missing songs on the Ipod and songs in artist name sequence instead of sequence on Itunes, both problems that raise questions about quality of software released for 6th gen. I went to talk to genius at Apple store and he indicated that Apple is moving away from smart playlists on Ipods and so suggested that I create dumb playlists on Itunes and copy the contents of my smart playlists to the dumb playlists and then synchronize those to the Ipod. That does work but it's a pain in the behind each time I add any songs to Itunes that get added to the smart playlists as I have to go through this whole time consuming process just to get the songs to show up on my Ipod. I also hope that Apple gets the synching problem fixed quickly.

  • Does anyone know if the IPOD Nano touch 6th Generation have videos+syncing?

    Hello Battouty,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know if the IPOD Nano touch 6th Generation have videos+syncing?
No, you cannot sync videos to the 6G Nano.
For help on syncing all other types of content, see the iPod's *User Guide*. It should be able to answer most of your questions.

  • Building a 240gb IPOD classic 6th generation???

I have been doing a lot of research and I haven't found an exact answer to my question. Right now I have a 6th generation 80GB ipod classic. I have run out of storage and I really need 240GB. I bought a rebuilt 240GB 7th generation Ipod from ebay a few days ago for ($274), I received it and I dont like the fit and finish of it. It looks like the wheel and faceplate are aftermarket replacements so it does not sit flush against the rear case and neither does the wheel to faceplate, there is an excessive gap around the circumference of the wheel and the faceplate, and the screen flickers at times, so I am going to return it. I primarily use my ipod for mountain biking and cycling so it gets exposed to sweat and rain. My 80GB has never failed under these conditions for 5+years, and I think this ebay version will fail very quickly.
I would like to know what are all the parts needed to make a 240GB hard drive work in my 6th generation ipod classic. I know if I install a 240GB hard drive in my 6th generation ipod it will only read 128GB. So can I replace the logic board in my ipod with a 7th generation ipod? I can find the 7th generation logic boards for ($60+) on ebay, then buy the 240gb hard drive ($86) and 6th generation (thick)160GB rear cover ($10) new 850mAh battery ($10). That would be a $166 upgrade..... Is that all I would need? Would the logic board be a direct swap, or would I need a different connector, screen, etc? I would prefer to just modify my 6th generation ipod since I know it works and it seems like it could be the cheapest way, and I don't need two ipods so I feel like it would be a waste to buy another one.
My other option is to buy a new 160GB 7th generation ipod classic ($230), and buy the 240gb hard drive ($86) and 6th generation (thick)160GB rear cover ($10). That would put me around $326....
I would prefer not to take another gamble and buying another ipod off of ebay, so I would like to keep it to these two options.....  If buying a 7th generation is the only way, could I then put the 160gb hard drive in my 6th generation? Would it still only read 128gb max? Would the hard drive be the only thing I would need to swap? From what I read it appears all the thin (6th and 7th) ipod classics used the same hard drive connector. To make the 160gb hard drive work, would I again need a 7th generation logic board?
Do I need a new headphone jack? Ive heard that it may need to be replaced but I dont remember for what ipod versions. Does this apply to my thin 6th generation, or the thin 7th, or neither?
Could someone please give me a complete parts list for making a 240gb 6th generation AND a 240gb 7th generation. Thanks!

You obviously know A LOT about this already.  I hear the "iPod classic" is known to be VERY difficult to pry open.  If your current iPod classic is working well, do you REALLY need more than 80GB of music when you go mountain biking.  If you replaced it with a new iPod classic, do you really need more than 160GB of music.
I have a smart playlist, where I start out with ALL of my music, but exclude things I don't usually want on my iPod, such as Holiday Music, Classical Music, Soundtrack Music, etc.  For my smaller capacity flash-based iPod, I have a smart playlist that starts with ALL of my music, then randomly selects a subset of songs that fits below the capacity limit of that iPod.  In both cases, I manage my iTunes library to fit the iPod, instead of making expensive and potentially damaging upgrades to my iPod to fit my iTunes library.
I understand that some folks just like doing these upgrades for the sake of doing the upgrade, and I can certainly understand that...
Here's another high-cool-factor approach.  Replace the hard drive with a standard Compact Flash card (Type II) on an adapter.  For example
    http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-128GB-Professional-Compact-Extreme/dp/B008O7N0 W6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
(There is one customer review of it being used in an iPod.)
It's expensive, but less than any of your total upgrade costs.  I have a much older 4th gen iPod with a Compact Flash card on an adapter, and here are the benefits I see.  It's significantly lighter than the same iPod with a hard drive, especially if it has a double-platter "thick" hard drive.  You can keep your iPod's sleek "thin" profile.  It uses less battery power, because no moving parts.  It is more shock resistant for the same reason, which I'm sure is an advantage for mountain biking.  There is no "hard drive spin-up" delay; songs always start playing instantly (and no faint hum and vibration when the hard drive is spinning).  I did not do any timing test, but I think it syncs faster.

  • Keeps loosing sound every 5th or 6th turn on.

I have mini pad, updated to ver:7. About every 5th or 6th time I turn it on, it comes on WITHOUT sound. I posted the question several months ago and received lots of fixes, switches, buttons, to check. All very helpful. However the problem still remains. I guess what bugs me is the fact that when it does come on without sound, I do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, other than turn it off, then turn it back on. When it comes on again---viola---sound again. It is okay then for about five or six startups, then for no reason---no sound again!  UNDERSTAND, I do nothing with the sound settings or sound switches, before or after I'm having this problem. I'm really thinking my mini could be defective!

That possibility certainly does exist. Have you tried resetting all settings? Settings>General>Reset >Reset All Settings. No data will be lost but all device settings will have to be entered again.
Restore the iOS Software? Take a look at this.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
