5thGen 80GB Classic Backlight in settings has no arrow no

80GB Classic ipod.
Suddenly there is no backlight. I need a flashlight to see what's playing and after having thousands of songs on here, it's just another apple frustrating issue with this ipod. It has been pretty much trouble free, except for a few hicups, but this time takes the cake.
I went into the main screen on the ipod and noticed there is no right arrow on the right hand side of the screen, it appears to be missing or blank,. but I can see all the other arrows on the right side of the screen. (EQ, Shuffle Volume limit, About, Repeat, etc.)
I went into SETTINGS, went to BACKLIGHT TIMER, which was set for 15 seconds. Went to BRIGHTNESS, and that's on high.
So I tried to RESET it, that did not wotk, it's really not any good info. I toggled the switch back and forth several times, then it tells me to put it on HOLD, then push the center button, then the top of the menu button at the same time until the apple logo appears.......OK, now what? I went to the next thing to do, but that was it!  Once you get the apple icon, what to do next?????  Not very good instructions.
I really don't want to RESTORE IT, because it will erase thousands of songs, which would be a pain to replace.
If the LCD screen is the problem that controls the backlight feature, and it went south, is this what I have to be stuck with from now on with my IPOD ?  So it's basically useless without a flashlight to see what i want to listen too?
Please tell me what, if anything I should do to rectify this backlight problem?  Thank you!  :-(

,"Firewire connections are not supported to transfer songs. Connect the USB cable provided."   And when I  do this....
This is usually a good indication that there is debris lodged in your iPod's dock connector port or that some of the pins are damaged/bent/corroded.  Try taking a can of compressed air to it and a small brush if you have one to try and clean it out.

  • Help Please..Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned). How do I transfer the library from the 160 to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista (ie merge the 2 libraries)? Thanks

Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned as it had a very noisy hard drive).
How do I transfer the library from the 160gb  to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista.
Nothing seems to help on the Apple support pages, so any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply, but not actually sure how to sync a second iPod with the library of the first, as I thought it would not recognise a new iPod for copyright reasons.
Also, the files are in a location on the pc but I had to do lots of formatting amendments in iTunes as most of the stuff was on mp3 files and the formatting was all over the place. I did not want to loose any of the work by simply asking the new iPod to look at the original file and would rather copy en masse from one device to another.
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated
    Thanks

  • Can't update firmware on *80GB Classic

I was prompted to install firmware update 1.1.1 for my 80GB Classic but I keep getting the message that the request has been timed out. On the downloads section of Itunes the estimated download time is showing as up to 3 hours, depsite me being on a fast broadband connection. Previous updates have gone fine.Purchases from Music Store go fine.
I have tried reinstalling Itunes and resetting Ipod but to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas? I am on Windows XP Home.

No you don't need to update the firmware.. but if you have forgotten the password you need to reset the TC.. it will then become available to the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Soft Reset to get around passwords.
To actually get around the password all you need to do is press the reset button for between 1-4sec seconds.. do not exceed that..
The passwords will then disappear for 5min reverting to default.. ie nothing on wireless and public for main access.
That allows you time to do the setup. Then try again with your ipad etc.
Otherwise find someone with a pc with windows and use the 5.6 utility on that or use an older Mac OS.. yosemite is hopeless.

  • 80GB Classic docking problem

I bought my 80gb classic in september and it works great with the headphones. Recently i plugged it into my friends sound dock and though it played it shut off by itself from time to time. After disconnecting it, the following day the sound did not work with the headphones and I had to restore to factory settings with my pc. Yesterday I received the bose sounddock as a gift and though my ipod played music it did shut off on its own from time to time and now today when i went to use it is says the connect to power source. Has this happened to anyone else and am I going to have to restore everytime I connect to a sounddock?

There are other threads here that discuss this very problem with the Classic and the Sound dock.
If you do a search you'll find them. I can't recall if there's a fix for this or not.

Ripped a CD to iTunes, it is showing up in "My Music" but when I sync with my 80gb Classic the ripped CD is not syncing even though other changes I made are
Have checked device sync settings and it is entire music library and their is plenty of space on ipod to accommodate - have restarted both itunes and the computer and disconnected and reconnected ipod to no avail.
Running itunes on Window machine under W8.1 and ipod software is 1.12

Thanks planb77. Your instructions worked but I had to do a little more than you stated. I did not realize that transferring files to a new computer was not enough. When the iPod synced I was told I needed to "authorize" my new computer to get my iTunes purchases to sync to the iPod. So after the initial sync, I ejected and disconnected the iPod, went into the iTunes store, set up "home sharing" and then authorized the new computer. When that was done I reconnected the iPod and was able to sync all my books and music. The only thing I couldn't do was rename the iPod as iTunes never asked me to. Is there a way to rename it after it has been set by iTunes as "owner's iPod"?

  • Used 6th Gen (80GB) Classic stops syncing at about 13GB mark - Fix suggestions?

Hi all, hoping someone can help me out.
I recently purchased a used iPod Classic 6th gen on eBay, and everything seemed to work great. However, as the title says, once the iPod has about 13GB of songs on it (12.8 to be exact), songs begin to take EXTREMELY long to sync and then just stop altogether. I did a lot of reading before posting here and I have looked at the HDSMART data to see if it was a blatant hard drive issue, and those stats all look fine. I reformatted the iPod through Disk Utility on my Mac and according to the Super iPod fix, but to no avail. I restored it on iTunes, same issue. I also tried breaking up the amount that's being synced at once, and that doesn't change it either - once it hits that mark, the issues start.
And for good measure, I made an exception for the iPod when it comes to on-access scanning on my anti-virus, because I read that might be the case. Nothing changes.
The iPod is an 80GB, model A1238. It has firmware 1.1.2 running.
Here's the SMART data for those of you interested. Maybe you can see something I've overlooked.
    Retracts: 10
    Reallocs: 72
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 22
    Start/Stops: 72
    Temp: Current 24C
    Temp: Min 15C
    Temp: Max 48C
I can return the iPod, I just really don't feel like it since I've been looking forward to owning one and I don't want to have to wait another week. Hopefully someone has an answer aside from it being a hard drive issue.
Thanks for any and all responses!

Just wanted to give you guys an update: my iPod now works again fully, without having reformatted it, as Apple suggested.
I was reading some other posts around here, and decided to try something before going for the ultimate/decimating solution: redownloaded iTunes and reinstalled it. Install of checking for updates, I just went to Apple's site, and downloaded the whole thing. Plugged in my iPod, and now it all works! All the songs that wouldn't play before are now working just fine, as before.
Seems to me there's something funky on iTunes 7.5 for Windows or the upgrade process, which wasn't there in previous versions.
    Hope this helps!

  • Windows logo testing to verify compatibility with 80GB Classic Problem

    Hi All,
I purchased my son a 80GB Classic for christmas and it has been great. Then out of the blue when he hooked it up to his computer two weeks ago to purchase new music the computer would not recognize it. I have tried the five R's as recommended and updated all his programs as suggested. Any advice would be Greatly appreciated. This is the message we get when we plug the ipod into the usb " The software you are installing for hardware has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP." Thank you!

Since I'm on a Mac, I can't offer a whole lot of help. I did find this article on the Microsoft website which may be helpful.

  • 80GB Classic Randomly Restarting & Then Freezing

I've only had my new 80GB Classic for a day and already things have gone wrong. I got all my content on there, no problems but now when I use my iPod it plays music and works fine but it randomly "dies" and goes to the apple screen then after a minute or so it goes to the menu but it freezes on the menu. I then have to restart it toggeling the hold button and holding the menu & middle buttons.
I haven't noticed a pattern or anything that makes this happen, it's happened whilst playing music, playing games even just changing the settings.
Anybody else having this problem, or can offer some advice. Thanks.

Yep, that's happening with my 160 Gb Classic, too. Sometimes it doesn't even go to the Apple screen, it just goes totally blank.
    I want my 5G back.

  • 80GB Classic gone black while updating firmware

Hopefully someone can help, while upgrading my 80GB Classic, the iPod completely stopped functioning. iTunes will not recognize the iPod and it will not turn on at all. I have tried and tried to reset it but to no avail.
Is there a fix or do I have to bring it in to Apple?

This same thing happened to my iPod Classic after the most recent firmware upgrade. Took it to the Apple Store, and was told that the updates were causing the iPods' battery to drain completely.
Apple Store plugged the iPod into a wall charger for about 30 minutes, and it came back, and has been fine since. They told me that plugging the iPod in to a USB port does not provide enough current to bring the iPod back to life, and that they only way to correct it was to plug it into the wall charger (not provided with iPod, of course).

  • 80GB Classic touch wheel non-responsive

Just got the 80GB classic, and am liking the new interface but the touch wheel is having some issues. The scrolling action only moves 20-30 lines at a time and then pauses, making it tedious to scroll through artists/albums. Anyone else having this problem? My old 3rd gen ipod would (and still does) scroll as fast as I can move my finger around the wheel.
Have tried the reset suggested in the Apple KB article but no luck there. Any other suggestions?

General opinion seems to be that the Classic wheel has a different response from earlier models. The Classic models won't work with skins that cover the scroll wheel for example and it's easier to lose access to fast scroll if you stray away from the optimum line. Since this is the first iPod I've owned myself (children have 5th gen) it seems to work OK although a fast scroll in Cover Flow would be useful.

  • Problem with 80GB classic it won't be recognised on itunes or my computer

My girlfriend told me that her pod had suddenly stopped working on her and was telling her that she had to restore it within her itunes, when she tried this the computer wouldn't recognise that there was even anything there. Later trying the same ipod on my computer i found that it wouldn't recognise the device on there either. I've heard alot of things about the 80GB classics suddenly stopping working when itunes is updated is this the same problem?
    Message was edited by: Famous101

I'm having the same problem. Been struggling to get 80gb Ipod Classic to work with Windows XP. I've gone through 4 Ipod Restores, and just when I think it's stable, some new issue rears it's head. Initially, I was convinced that I had a corrupted Itunes library, as eventually during a sync, Itunes would get stuck on some random file, and I would have to pre-emptively disconnect. Eventually, this would corrupt the database files on my Ipod, and it would start up fine, but say it had no content on it (but with, say, 60gb free). So I cleared my library and database files (my documents > my music). started from scratch basically. Since doing this, syncing has been fine for the past month...Now (started two days ago), connecting my Ipod to my computer, Itunes won't see it. On the Ipod, it shows "Do not disconnect" screen, and then "Ok to Disconnect" screen immediately. Last night, I experimented, connecting and disconnecting the Ipod to my computer, and eventually Itunes did recognize it (seems hit-or-miss), but then during the sync it eventually got stuck syncing a file, and I had to pre-emptively disconnect. Luckily, it did not erase/screw up the library on my Ipod.
Another issue, I have is that Podcasts, never show in the outermost Main menu. The only way to access podcasts on my Ipod Classic, is to put them all in a playlist. Any one else with this problem?

  • 80gb Classic won't sync or charge; "USB Device Not Recognized"

I have an 80gb classic, and a 5th gen. 30gb ipod both with the same issue. I recently rebuilt mine and my husband's computers with new MB's and Processors. I reformatted the HDD's and then installed all necessary drivers and the like along with the newest itunes 9. My ipods had no previous problems and worked like a charm 5 mins earlier.
I hooked them up to my computer and windows came up with an error message saying "USB Device Not Recognized...one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." I put in my other ipod, same error message.
I have tried everything to fix this including, unplugging all usb's but ipod and trying all usb ports, reinstalling usb drivers, switching to 1.1, uninstalling itunes completely and using older versions 5-8, wiping OS and installing vista instead of XP, putting ipod into disk mode, resetting ipod numerous times, among some other things. This error message comes up on all computers in the house (4) including ones that have not been wiped or upgraded.
In addition to windows and itunes not seeing it, it will not charge via USB or wall AC power. The Ipods are devoid of charge now, but when they were full on battery life they still played music through headphones and stereo with no issues, they just won't do anything computer related it seems.
I have not given up hope because I have about 20gb of music and vids I foolishly didn't back up and I want it back. How is this possible that 2 ipods were fine one second then broken the next? Please, Please, Please need help.

I have a Dell Laptop that I've been synching my iPhone with for six months. Now all of the sudden the connection has been lost. I'm having the same problem as you describe and have tried everything I have seen on this forum and elsewhere to fix it, but nothing is working.
I think it is an issue with the driver, but I have confirmed that usbaapl.sys driver is installed in "Program Files," "Common Files," "Apple," "Mobile Device Support" folder. I tried copying the driver and putting it in the main Apple folder, but that doesn't help either. I have tried removing and reinstalling iTunes multiple times, rebooting my iPhone and computer (many, many times). I've tried updating the driver and pointing the USB device directly to the driver, but it does not see it. The strange thing is that when my iPhone is plugged in, it charges just fine. It just won't connect to iTunes or synch with my outlook anymore.
Does anyone have any suggestions? This is a major issue for me as I have to synch calendars to be able to function between work and home. Doubly frustrating that it used to work and now it does not. The only thing that has changed is that I installed printer software and updated iTunes. No other changes to my computer that I am aware of between when it worked and now.

  • 80GB Classic - Itunes always sees in Recovery Mode

Have just got new 80GB Classic - When plug into PC Itunes (version 7.4.3.1) comes up that detected IPOD in recovery mode. So I click to restore and restores and re-starts IPOD then same message comes up again.
Have tried several times and just get same message. When plug in old 20GB 4th generation IPOD it is recognised with no problems.
So wonder what to try next ?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Neil

Did you have a look at the troubleshooting page linked to above? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive

  • Unsure what to do with my broken 80gb classic.

I have just received a 80gb classic as a gift from my work, it arrived tuesday and was working fine, i updated it to the latest firmware and loaded all my podcasts and music on and its been great since.
Today i dropped it. straight vertical fall onto the headphone jack.
in doing so, it appears that the screen has disconnected itself but in a way that it is still active because the screen shows bright white. I just restored it back to default and the Peso is working so im sure it is just the screen. the only other damage is to the headphone jack which is dented but still usable.
I live in the UK and i am unsure whether this possibly minor problem that i have diagnosed myself is actually in requirement of Apples full repair price and im unsure how to go about returning the product.
    Can anyone help?

Apple will fix and probably has flat-rate costs depending on how much damage they find.
No, they won't. If Apple find the iPod has been accidentally damaged, they'll simply return it and might even charge a diagnostic fee.
This is a quote from the repair terms and conditions.
+"Apple reserves the right to refuse service on iPods that are outside their warranty if damage has occurred due to accident, abuse, misuse or unauthorized modifications. In such event, Apple will return your original iPod to you without providing service, and may hold you responsible for diagnostic fees."+

  • That Syncing feeling - 80gb classic

Have upgraded to iTunes 7.6.2.9 and now when I plug in the iPod, it fails to appear in the Source panel at left of iTunes, or to sync.
It's connected to the computer OK, because I can use "disconnect hardware" to get permission to unplug - which the iPod sees; and iTunes saw it and said it needed to Restore. I did this and it's wiped all the music from the iPod; but still no sync and nothing appears in the source pane.
Was working fine previously; I had synced several times without problems.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

You are not alone Roger. I've been fighting with my 80GB Classic for about a week now. At first, I thought it was the iPod. I took it to the Apple Store yesterday and they hooked it to a Macbook running windows and it performed like a dream. The guy at the Bar put it into Disk Mode first thing, Restored it, synced 400+ tracks to it, played a few then Restored it again. I brought it home and immediately started getting the same error messages. I don't know what it's issue it. I've even rebuilt my entire iTunes library on a secondary partition that had windows installed.. thinking I could trick it into thinking it's a different computer. It's hit and miss, but I keep getting the -48 error message. I think there's something in iTunes 7.6.2.9 that has changed my computer in some way. I uninstalled that version, deleted everything I could find with library files, etc on it... and installed 7.5 with no success. There is SOMETHING there that is causing this problem and it's apparently messing with our iPods. I'm trying a full sync in Disk Mode now.... Hopefully it works. *crosses fingers*
