6.0.2 BUG: setting rating in smart playlists

I created a smart playlist and wanted to match all songs that were not one star. When I click on the section with the stars, I can select any number (and the number of stars follow the mouse as I drag it - as expected). However, when I release the mouse, the number of stars changes. I can only select 0, 2, 4, or 5 stars -- not 1 or 3. The cursor location -> number of stars mapping seems wrong because clicking on the first star yields 2 stars, but clicking on the second star yields 4 stars.
Selecting stars works fine in the library view.

  • ITunes 6.0.2 glitch - unable to specify 3 star rating in smart playlists

    Hi all,
there seems to be an interface glitch in iTunes 6.0.2 which prevents me from setting up a smart playlist rule containing a rating of 3 stars. Whenever i try to adjust the slider to * it jumps back to ***.
    Can anybody confirm this?
    regards,

Yes, I can confirm it. Here's another thread, unfortunately without a solution yet: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=309553&tstart=90.

  • Cannot use "My Rating" in Smart Playlists

Am using iTunes 6.0.1.3. I want to create a Smart Playlist where one of the rules is "My Rating is greater than 3 stars".
However, the box in which I should be able to enter a star rating is blank, and I'm unable to click in it or tab round to it to enter my desired rating.
Is this a known bug? Does this work OK for others? It would be good to know a) if it works OK for others (which makes it my problem) or b) if it's broken for others too (which makes it a bug)
    Thanks,
    Alan.

  • Unable to use the stars in My Rating in Smart Playlist

For the last few weeks, I am unable to see or select the stars when I pick "my rating" as a criteria in smart playlists.
My older playlists that used this criteria work well, but when I enter one of them toedit it, I don't see the starts eitther. I am using version 6.0.4.2
    Thanks

In order to use the Facebook Check In feature you must have your GPS turned on. You can turn on GPS by dragging the screen down and selecting the GPS icon.
You can also turn on GPS by selecting Menu, Settings and Location & settings.
    Hope this helps!

  • Suggestion for Album Rating in Smart Playlist - let me choose

First just want to say I love the Album Rating feature, especially the ability to make a "Smart Playlist" that includes all my top rated albums.
However, I have a suggestion to make this feature better. Right now, it lets you choose albums that have integer ratings such as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 stars BUT due to rounding this really means 0.5-1.49, 1.5-2.49, 2.5-3.49, 3.5-4.49, and 4.5-5.0 stars. Apple should let you specify any number of stars, including decimal points. In other words, if I want all albums that are 3.8 stars and up, let me do that.
This may not seem important, but the way I sync my ipod with my playlists relies on these smart playlists (and not on rating every single song in my library) because my ipod is too small in hard drive size for my library.
Any one else out there agree?

  • Apple please add album art (set/unset) to Smart Playlist criteria

Please allow me to define a smart playlist defining all tracks that have album art vs those that don't. I don't think the criteria allows this right now.

BTW it works just fine too, creating a playlist of all your songs that lack artwork.
I agree. I had been meaning to download and use the no artwork script for some time and this topic got me to finally do it. I had no problems whatsoever, although I learned that a third of my tracks have no cover art.

  • How can I set up a smart playlist for those free songs from iTunes?

I have been downloading all those free songs that iTunes gives out every week. I just realized that I never listen to them because they are not all grouped together. Is there a way to do that? I tried using a smart folder to do that but I don't think anything in those files is labeled "single of the week" so nothing came up. Any ideas?

That would work. Another option I just thought of is that since most my iTunes purchases are music videos I could just say show purchased content that is not a music video. I would still end up getting some stuff that wasn't the free songs but the results seem close enough. Since my song library has 3494 songs it would be hard to pick the free songs out individually.

  • Possible bug with iTunes 11 ?? (with Smart Playlists)

    Hi folks
New to Apple Support, but after upgrading to iTunes 11 earlier today (on my Mac Mini) I've discovered a potential bug / difference in the way it operates compared to earlier versions. Can someone else try something similar and see if they get the same result - I think I read somewhere that v11 is not available on Windows yet, so I cant compare what happens there
I've imported all our CD's into iTunes, and we've set up several Smart Playlists (SP). Using the Rating setting for the songs, we can break them up into groups, eg
Rating 0 = not yet processed
Rating 1 = not interested in listening to again
Rating 2 = kids songs (for our children)
    Rating 3 = christmas songs
Rating 4 = songs i like, but my wife probably wouldnt
Rating 5 = songs we both like - good for background music etc
Using Home Sharing to our iPad's rocks !!
    Now, onto the bug.
Using the SP that has just songs with Rating 0, I could play any song, set the Rating to whatever, and naturally once set, that disappears from the SP
In all earlier versions of iTunes, playback would continue with the next song, so I could set that Rating, etc etc. Worked really well to churn through a chunk of songs in say 15 minute blocks
With iTunes v11, playback stops as soon as I set the Rating.
How can you help ?????????? Set up a smart playlist with whatever criteria you like - make sure you have a number of songs returned and ensure Live Updating is set, have a song playing, and make that song no longer valid for that SP. Anyone doing this in earlier versions of iTunes should have the next song begin, and if this is a bug, then those using iTunes 11 will have playback stop
Sorry for the long post, but in order to determine a potential bug, you need to describe the situation and how to test it.
    Thanks for reading
PS I'm on a 2010 Mac Mini with OSX v10.7.x (whatever the current release of that is) and just upgraded to iTunes 11

Soo, maybe it isnt possible bug, but the way Apple have changed iTunes when going to v11. Stooopid
Anyway, found this link about downgrading to an earlier version. I've just completed it and found one or two "errors" in the method, which I'll detail below
    http://www.emacconsulting.com/apple/itunes/downgrade-itunes-11-to-itunes-10-7/
In the latter part of the instructions
    11) Open your iTunes Music Folder.
If you never moved your iTunes folder it’s located here:
    Your HD/Your User/Music/iTunes
Or go to the Finder type:  Command + Shift + G
Paste this into the the dialog:  ~/Music/iTunes
If you moved it to another hard drive, you will know where to locate your iTunes folder.
    12) Open the “Previous iTunes Libraries” folder.
    13) Find the most recent copy of the “iTunes Library 2012-xx-xx.itl” file.
Normally it will the last file at the bottom of the list.
    14) Drag a copy of the file into the iTunes folder.
    15) Delete the “iTunes Library” file.
    16) Change the name of the “iTunes Library 2012-xx-xx.itl” to ”iTunes Library” with no .itl extension.
    In #11, I simply went to "My HD"/Users/"My User"/Music/iTunes
Copied the latest .itl and moved it up a directory level
The old file in #15 is called "iTunes Library.itl" - which I renamed, and renamed the copied version back to "iTunes Library.itl" = though I do have extensions showing, some people may not and hence wont see the .itl
Anyway all is fixed in my world, and when I launched v10.7, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to v11 - I said No and not to prompt me again. Playcount issue is resulved, as is changing SmartList criteria with playback continuing
Apple - please correct these bugs before releasing any new versions of iTunes... you've made a very large number of people unhappy

  • ITunes on External Drive - Possible to have smart playlists sync automatically to internal storage?

    Hey guys,
As the title says, I've got my entire iTunes library stored on a desktop external hard drive.  Of course, when I need to take my computer anywhere, it's got no music on it.
I have the majority of my iTunes library rated, and have a bunch of smart playlists set up.
Is there any way I could set up a smart playlist and have that playlist be stored (and referenced, I don't want to have to hunt the folder down every time I launch iTunes) on my internal hard drive?  Maybe with automator?
It's also important to me that all my metadata (play/skip counts and dates) remains untouched, otherwise I loose all my smart playlists.
    Thanks!

I just stumbled upon an app called tunespan.  It's $15, and I'd rather not spend that, but if it works for what I need that'd be great.
    Any ideas about this app?

  • After 3 years, tried live updating of smart playlist again. Still broken.

I mean that lists like "Music I haven't listend to recently" do not remove songs on the fly when I listen songs. Last time some special rules were a problem, like "album rating", or "skipped" or "is/not podcast". It worked if I avoided those rules. I did not research the details this time. Although all my rules are really old, so they should have been fixed by now. (Old, but a complex set of ten smart playlists, all live updating and the "main" list built from the others.)
Here is my speculation from 2009:
Generally any RECENT iTunes smart playlist RULE TYPES that Apple has introduced in iTunes, but failed to update to iOS Music Player seem to be the problem. The iOS device can not understand a new iTunes rule unless somebody hard codes it to a new iOS version which is then updated to your iPod. And the live update is disabled, if iOS does not recognize a rule that iTunes has.
Why, oh, why don't they just define a  scripting language to implement the smart lists, with primitives that can read any meta-data fields on a media file, and compare strings, numbers and dates? Then a new rule type would just mean a different script synced to iPhone, not re-programming the Music Player?
    Or what gives, tell me?

FYI, I've found that Live Updating can SORT OF work. It seems if you only have two rules, live upating works (IE, I have one that is a Rating must be 3-5*'s and last played cannot be within the last 8 weeks). Once the song is played it disapears off the playlist. BUT, as soon as I try to add a third rule, it doesn't work anymore! This is unfortunate because two rules really limits the ability of the playlist...
    Cheers,

  • Smart Playlist JUST for 'Free Songs of the Week?'

I would like to create a Smart playlist comprising exclusively the 'Free Songs of the Week' from the iTunes Store. So when I get the weekly 'Free Song,' it goes right into that list. But I need some sort of 'unique identifier' that allows this to happen, and I can't seem to find one. I go under all the 'View Options' and nothing seems to 'tag' these songs as unique, so I can't set up a Smart Playlist that includes just those songs.
Is there a way to do this?

The iTunes Store doesn't tag the free tracks any differently from any other track that I can see, so I can think of no automatic way to put just the free tracks into a playlist. You could, though, put "free" or something similar in the Comments section when you download one of the free items, and then have a Smart Playlist that looked for "free" in the Comments. That's the only way I can think of to accomplish what you want. That wouldn't be any easier than just dragging the free tracks to a normal playlist, but would allow you to have future Smart Playlists that process the free tracks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Updating smart playlists

I have set up a smart playlist, which says not to play songs played in the last 7 days, and limits the playlist to 700 songs so that the playlist will always fit on my 4gb nano.
When I've plugged it in over the last couple of days, it says "cannot update not enough free space".
How do I get it to remove songs that don't conform to the smart playlist rules, so that the songs on the ipod rotate regularly?

Which is fine, but is there no way of automating the process?
Then all I should have to do is plug it in after each days listening, and get continually rotating songs, and not listen to the same songs each day.
If not, fair enough, just seems silly.

  • Smart Playlist - Location is on this computer

    Hi,
I've just received my new MacBook Air (I'm loving it!) and as it's blank I'm taking the opportunity to assess my iTunes library and previous purchases.  I have downloaded a total of 20 tracks, so there are only 20 tracks stored on the harddrive, all other tracks are in iCloud.
I've set up a smart playlist with the criteria, Location - is - on this computer, I fully expected this smart playlist to show me the 20 tracks that I've downloaded, but it remains blank.
I'm wanting to see these tracks, but for some reason the smart playlist isn't working.  Is this because the settings for the smart playlist are wrong, ie. this won't show what's on the hard drive? or is something going wrong with my playlist?
Any guidance on seeing just the songs on my hard drive would be really appreciated.
    Many thanks

It appears that it was all down to a timing issue.  12 hours later and the playlist is now working fine.

  • Smart playlists in iCloud

Why won't smart playlists upload to iCloud when using itunes match, for use on my iOS devices?

" There are Gigbytes of iCloud space being taken up right now with audio files that are just audiobooks i've ripped in from CD.  I don't need it up there.  Apple surely dosn't want me wasting all that space on their servers...  Why in the name of heaven would they go out of their way to make it impossible to fix?"
You brought this up in an earlier post, which I responded to.  It's not "impossible to fix," but it does take some work. I pointed you a post that details how to make duplicates, change file names, get those files off Apple's servers and still keep them in your library. I see you're running into a problem changing the file type.  If you follow the method I've used for swapping non-playing music files for copies that will play, at the point where you edit the actual file name, you're doing it outside of itunes. I don't need to change file type for what I'm doing, but working in the finder, I've never had a problem doing it, If you have a lot of files, I know changing them all to .epub manually may be a pain.  I'm sure there are utilities out there that would let you batch change the file extension though. For reference below is the process I've used to swap out my own matched files.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3567775
"And while on the subject of things made pointlessly difficult or impossible: I love the iCloud Status setting in the smart playlists...  But the most basic feature I need, dosn't seem to be an option: What is in the cloud and what is on my drive.  Isn't this a fairly obvious thing?"
I've never used smart playlists, but your concern made me go look.  I made one that included songs that were local and another that were uploaded or matched by using the icloud status qualifiers "matched" "uploaded" and "local only."  Doesn't "Local only" do what you want?
