  • URGENT FIREWIRE NOT DETECTED

    Hi.
I've just bought a new intel iMac 2.66ghz and installed FCS.
I just attempted to capture from a dv tape for the first time and it came up with the message...
"unable to initialize tape deck, you may still log offline clips or use capture now"
when i attempt to use capture now it says..
"attempt to capture video without a video device selected. please select a video device in your capture presets and try again"
I have the capture settings set to Firewire PAL DV PAL 48khz Anamorphic
I am capturing off of a Panasonic NV-GS320 - I've captured off of this camera onto an iMac in the past (a white one, I'm assuming it was not an intel based)
When i try and check if the camera is detected in the system profiler it says "unable to list firewire devices" next to the word 'warning'
However when i have no firewire cable inserted it says nothing except the max speed.
Is my firewire not being detected or is faulty?
Can anyone help me please!? I have a project due in that i need to start but i cannot capture!
Any help would be Much appreciated

Have you done all of this:
In the FCP menu bar, go to Final cut Pro > Easy Setup. Choose DV PAL. Click OK.
Go to Sequence > Settings and click on "Load Sequence Preset". It will already be set to DV PAL, confirm by clicking OK. Make a new project file with these settings. Try capturing your material again.
What version of Final Cut Pro are you using ?

  • WD MyBook Premium 320GB Firewire not recognized on my MBP?

    Hey guys,
First off, thank you for the help anyone is willing to offer.
Ok, so i have a MBP Intel Core Duo (1gb RAM) and use it to record music on. But basically, i have a WD MyBook Premium 320GB drive that works perfectly fine via USB. It powers up, mounts, and i can back anything i want on it. I formatted the drive to Mac Extended Journal format.
I would like to use the firewire port though, just to keep my USB ports open. When i plug it via Firewire i get nada. I plug it in and power up the MBP and the drive doesnt power up, so i turn it on and it doesnt mount. Now, THis is the second one i have, i had the same one a few weeks ago and returned it for this one thinking the drive was defective but its obviously not. is there anyway to "turn on" or Fix this issue with the firewire not recognizing the drive?
    thanks alot for the help
Macbook Pro 15" Intel Core Cuo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ace King, in case you're still dealing with this I figured it out:
I called tech support for an hour. First lady I talked to told me the firewire cable that was supplied with the drive is defective (she knew the problem right away). Tried my own cable but it still didn't work. She put me on to "Level 2"....ooooooh....now I'm getting somewhere? No, wait for 15 more minutes listening to terrible muzak...
Anyways while I was waiting I thought I'd try my good cable in the other port on the drive and oila! So when the dude gets on the phone I ask him what the deal is...get this:
"The faulty cable most likely fried the port." Wow...not only is the cable crap it actually destroys their product...someone must have lost their job for that one. Seems like sabotage almost...anyways, there you go. Return it and DO NOT use the cable supplied.
    Cheers!

  • Temporarily freezing audigy 2 and firewire not working - sol

    hi,
i had two problems with my audigy 2 using windows xp:
    a) my firewire port didnt appear to work. i had only one device using firewire which was my creative jukebox zen. i could only transfer 95% of the first mp3 and then it would say that my mp3 player is not responding.
    b) i experienced random and temporary freezes, not only while gaming but even when writing e-mails. everything would hang for a few seconds and then continue to work like if you write text it will appear after the hang.
firewire: i used my audigy 2 in my old pc with windows me and win 2000 without any problems. neither with firewire nor with the eax4 driver patch. under win xp i could only transfer mp3s via usb and that is slow as hell as you can imagine. i first tried if transfers using the firewire port on my mobo worked but it didnt, same prob. i found a fix from microsoft that is not listed in windowsupdate at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en (KB885222). that did not solve this issue but maybe you need that too so I mention it here. then i found some new drivers on the creative site. "oh you fool, why didnt you say earlier that you're using old drivers?" someone might say but these drivers dont work or more specifically, its setup routine sux. it quits with "an error occurred". wow cool... but it appears as it unpacks the driver to c:\program files\creative\jukebox3 or something (note, i have a zen and not a jb3...) so I uninstalled everything, rebooted and told the device manager manually to get the drivers from that location. now it works.
freezes: it took me many, many hours to search the internet, but i found absolutely nothing. sure i'm using the latest drivers (yea they actually work), put the card in slot3 and stuff. then i found a post on this board that mentioned that this guy's audigy had a heat problem. it became too hot and hung. hmm. i have 2x 2cm fans sucking heat out of the box through the radiator of my water cooling so heat is actually mostly get rid of through water and whatever else produces heat (harddisc, video card ram etc) is cooled by some really strong air flow. so wth, this card has worked for almost 2 years in my old box. so i opened the case and saw that air circulation around the audigy was impossible as its sandwitched by two other cards. those parts that i was able to touch were not that hot but i dont know how hot the main chip became and i have no clue why a sound card can become too hot from playing an mp3... anyway, i have left my case open and since then i havent had any freezes. now i also know why the freezes suddenly appeared and not since after i setup my box 3 months ago: it was open until i had cut a hole for the radiator...
oh yea, its good that my expensi've creative stuff works and that it was not creative's fault but that of a moron of a user. now honestly, how is an average user supposed to get their product working when the knowledge base is totally outdated and gives advice such as "update your bios, get the latest drivers and dont put your card into the microwave", when mods in this forum give advice like the knowledge base and the driver is not even installable? creative products are not bad at all, they're not cheap at all too. but the support page is absolutely not informati've and the knowledgebase does not give solutions to known issues. i was never ever able to find anything useful there and i'm really really not an average user but a very experienced one. not everyone wants to use a pre-installed dell box with el-cheapo components. i like to put my own high-end rig together and things must be pushed to the limit BUT still be absolutely rock solid. let me list my recent experience with creative products during the past 2 years:
-) bought an inspire 6. surround system and even replaced my audigy with version 2 for it. but unfortunately the subwoofer had a problem. it randomly made a popping noise which was so loud that it pushed your adrenaline level to that of a base jumper. i then found out that the whole batch had some faulty component. at least i got a replacement within a week, so i thought "yea, great support".
-) bought a jukebox zen, 20gb with firewire. it worked great for almost a year. then it died. when i switched it on, only the creative logo appeared, thats it. recovery mode was inaccessible too. it took me 2 months to convince the support lady to let me return this junk. first they sent me a new adapter because maybe it was damaged and the battery was low and therefore it didnt work anymore... then i was told, ok you can have a new one but we dont have firewire versions in stock anymore. you can have a usb one now or you wait until we get the firewire zen again. i said wtf, you produce this so why dont you have them in stock? and the usb version is sure not an equivalent to my firewire player. woot after 2 months i got a new mp3 player... had to rip 250 cds again (i really prefer having originals) and copy them to the player, but ok, i'm happy again. no, i'm not. this one doesnt work properly either. everytime i dont use the player for more than 24 hours i have to rebuild the database and scan the harddisc. that takes about 0 minutes for like 3000 songs!! grr... but i didnt want to argue with the tech support about that, i can li've with that. maybe i can flash to an older bios if i find one somewhere. from what i read somewhere it is caused by the zen going from hibernate into "off power" mode and then it forgets a few things.
and now i had the two issues described above and had to find a solution myself because the support pages dont help at all. sure you can say i should have thought of a heat problem but all important components are watercooled (even the north bridge) and i had some good airflow in general, but not around the sound card. and who knows that the audigy is that sensiti've to heat and that a sound card even gets hot at all. i've never heard of sound card cooling... i'm not that disappointed about the quality of the hardware because it is ok imo, but with the horrible lack of quality of the support and the buggy driver installation. hey, you get free advice by your customers, think about that. they tell you by themselves what the problem is and what they think may cause it. sure many posts are just flames but you should take ppl here more seriously. and if other manufacturers are to blame then put a list together like: msi k8n neo2 platinum - in this case upgrade to bios .2 or in that case install this or turn on/off that.
alright, i hope anyone can use this information. sorry for the length but i wanted to describe things as precisely as necessary. cheers from austria.

Hi folks,?Initially my audigy 2 nx was not working. But after installing the drivers for vista it started to work. But unfortunately, the other application from creative media source is not working. When I press EAX it says '[color="#000099">the application with the device not found'. But the sound card is working fine.[color="#000099">?[color="#000099">I have even mailed creative with the details. They have sent me a mail with the drivers and an application driver. • IPod says "FireWire not supported" when connecting with a USB cable

Hello all. First post ever. I am trying to connect my Nano (1 gig) to my Windows Vista. (This use to work flawlessly) Whenever I try to connect my iPod to my computer via a USB cable, it says "FireWire connections are not supported please use USB cable provided blah blah..." It is strange because I have never used anything but a USB cable with my iPod. I've tried everything, resetting via Menu + select, putting it in Disk mode. Seperate PC's including an XP PC. Anyone ever had this happen to them? Please help!!
    Thank you,
    Ben Roughan

This message appears to be a hardware issue, and cannot be fixed; the iPod likely needs to be replaced.

  • External Hard Drive USB ok, Firewire not

This is a weird one. I have 2 external HDs, one a LaCie and one a "Metal Gear Box". Both work fine with firewire on my old ibook G3, but only the LaCie works through firewire on my powerbook G4. The Metal Gear Box will connect through USB, but when I try to do it through firewire nothing shows up. Not even in Disk Utility. With the LaCie working fine I know it's not a problem with my firewire port. . . so I'm really confused as to what's going on.
I have a lot of stuff on my Metal Gear Box right now so I don't want to erase it if at all possible. Can anyone help me?

I'll make a wild guess that the Metal Gear Firewire bridge chip just does not like the G4 implementation. I would try some more tests on other computers if possible. Then, if compatibility is needed, I think I would move the drive mechanism in the Metal Gear into another enclosure that is known to work. I have had no problems myself with OWC enclosures with Oxford bridge chips. Or just sell it and buy a new drive after copying it.

  • Firewire not detected...

I plugged my external hard drive via fire wire into the back of my mac pro.
I plugged my Panasonic mini-dv camera into the front. When I boot up FCP, the computer/program doesn't recognize that a video device is plugged in.
Any way to activate that fire wire port on the front of the computer?

Any way to activate that fire wire port on the front of the computer?
It probably is activated. Try plugging your external hard drive to the front port.
If it works, then you know the problem is not the port.
Once you've determined that the port works, plug your camera into it.
Make sure the camera is in playback (VCR) mode, not camera mode.
As Nick suggests, you might need to try another cable.
In FCP, it may be necessary to choose an appropriate setup.
If you select Audio/Video Settings (command-option-Q),
you'll see tabs for Capture Settings and Device Control Settings.
Normally, these should be NTSC (DV and Firewire, respectively).

  • HDX-16T firewire not working properly with camcorder

I hope someone can help me get this issue resolved. I've been trying to look for a solution for months! I was given the HDX-16T 1200CTO for christmas. An upgrade disc to Windows 7 64-bit came with it, so I installed it (up from Vista 64). When I tried to capture video from my Sony HDR-HC5 camcorder to my computer via my firewire cable, no data was transmitted. I tried several different video editing programs, including windows movie maker. None of them seems to work with the capture. According to the device manager, the firewire port is working properly. My camera can be controlled through the computer so they are obviously connected. I just can't seem to capture video from the tape. Capture works fine on my old windows xp desktop, so the camcorder is not the problem. I tested this with 2 different firewire cables with the same result, so the problem isn't the cable either. Like an idiot, I did not test the firewire port before the Windows 7 upgrade, so I'm not sure if the upgrade itself is the issue. A major reason I wanted a new computer was so that I could edit video. Because the firewire port isn't working properly, I'm having to capture from the old computer and transport it via external hard drive to my laptop, which frankly is a pain in the @$$. I would appreciate any help.
P.S. I all my IEEE 1394 drivers are up to date. I have also tried everything suggested on this page.

I just bought a new HP DV7-3188cl laptop with I5 processor, 6GB of mem and a built in firewire interface.  My primary purpose of buying this laptop was for video editing.  Sounds like I have the same problem as you.  My Sony HDR-HC5 HD camcorder connects to the laptop, and I am able to control the camera (stop, rewind, etc.) however whenever I try to capture video from the camera, there is no data sent, even though the camera begins to play the video with no problems.  I have an older dell running windows XP and I have no problems.  By the way, I have noticed that if I use Sony's capture software, that it will automatically stop the capture if more than 10 seconds of no data is detetected.  If after the capture program has stoped because of this "no data transfer problem", I restart the capture, with the option set to restart from the beginning of tape, the camera will rewind, and when the capture begins the 2nd time, about 80% of the time it will capture data correctly.  I have never been able to get Corel or any of the other pre installed programs to capture data through the firewire interface on this new HP laptop
Were you successful in finding a solution to your problem.  If I cannot solve this problem, I suspect the laptop goes back to Sams.
    Thanks
    John

  • Import video via firewire not allowed by Face Time

I am trying to import video to my harddrive via firewire. Every time I open iMovie and click on the video camera icon the only device seen is the Face Time camera. There's a little drop down window but it only has Face Time as the option not my Sony DCR VX1000 video camera which is turned on to VCR mode to allow exporting of video content. Is there some way to get my camera recognized by the macbook or at least to disable Fact Time?

You might contact Sony for some technical assistance.  In the past they have not been Mac friendly.
    Ciao.

  • Firewire not showing....tried all the usual

    Hi Folks
Have been searching around the community but can't find an answer to this, so I thought I'd try asking.
I have an iMac core Duo 20" (the white one)running on Tiger (all updates done)
I have had it for about 2 years and only recently have I tried to use the firewire port for something.
My friend gave me some data on and old ipod which works on his macbookpro and gave it to me with the firewire cable. The ipod charges and gets power through the firewire port, but will not mount or be recognised.
I had a look in the "About this mac" section under firewire and it is just blank. Not even a "No firewire detected" or anything.
I have tried all of the usual things like reseting the PRAM etc. but none of it seems to work.
The ipod works on another machine so it can't be the ipod or cable. The ipod also works via USB, but the battery drains in under 3mins when using it in disk mode.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try?
    Thanks
    Graeme

    Hello Graeme
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+

  • Migration over firewire not transferring anything

I am trying to migrate everything from my old macbook pro to my new one over to my new one over firewire. I have tried twice and it starts at 1hr 30min and goes to 50min to 2hrs 30min and then finishes with in 30min total. Once it finished nothing had finished, it transferred the application names, but not the applications, no documents, no pictures, no downloads, nothing except app names transfered. Could somebody please help?

Step 1, restore the new machine.
1: Hold Command and R keys down, boot the new computer.
2: Disk Utility, select the Maintosh HD partition, click Erase and move the slider one step to the right, the middle choice selection and click erase. Wait.
3: Quit when finished and select the Lion installer, install OS X with your AppleID and password on a reliable fast Internet connection.
4: When completed reboot and setup like a new machine, use a different name than on the other Mac.
5: Install your free iLife here
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion
If you reinstall Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion installed, on an erased or replaced hard drive, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
    After installation, start from Lion.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to compete installation of your applications.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Step 2, use Migration Assistant.... or....
1: Connect the machines using Firewire
2: Hold T boot the old Mac so it's drive appears on the desktop of the new Mac.
3: You can use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder, however you might have the same problems again.
    or
    Step 3, Manual install
1: Go to System Preferences > Accounts
2: Create a new user with the same name as the old one on the old Mac (or series of users if more than one)
3: Log out of the first account created on the new Mac and into each new user, transfering files manually from the T booted old Mac's drive.
4: Note, transfer files into their same named folders, Pictures into Pictures, Movies into Movies, etc.
Leave the User/Library folder on the old Mac, it's changed and won't work on the new Mac.
5: Install compatible programs from fresh sources again on the new Mac, don't transfer from the old Mac.

  • External Firewire not mounting

Since the quicktime 7.5 updater I have been unable to mount ANY firewire devices. A check of the system profiler shows under firewire,(in red) "Unable to list FireWire devices."
The same external drive when using USB 2.0 connection does indeed mount and work properly suggesting there is now a problem with both FireWire and FW800 connections. Ive tried everything listed in every forum and the issue persists. Since finding this "Warning" in the system profiler Ive decided to post with the hopes others may recognize the same issue and perhaps we can find a solution.
    Onward and thanks.

    Hi Dennis,
I read your thread with interest because I just installed Leopard X.5.3 on a partition on my iMac G5, and the FW 400 devices that had been working fine were not mounting. I, too, have a Belkin FW "powered" Hub, and I was beginning to think it was bad. I had even gotten the same error in red in System Profiler/Firewire/Firewire device Tree/"Unable to list Firewire Devices".
So as I wrote this note, I'd say 5 minutes after the problem started, the drive (actually a mirrored array of 2 drives) appeared. I have since tried to mount the other drives I have connected to the Belkin Hub, and they wouldn't show. I connected the hub to my other iMac and unforunately 2 of 3 Mirrored Arrays are showing as degraded. Only the 1 "good" array appeared on the Leopard install on the iMac G5.
So I guess I've got to remember to unplug devices when doing a system install? That's must be how these guys got hosed?
    YMMV.
    So long for now, TOM

  • Shut down without warning @ 30% , firewire not working , sleep mode problem

    Hello!
I seem to have a combination of problems in which I believe that somehow they must be related altogether. I would appreciate any advice you may have on the cause of these problems and/or any solutions. Here's a detailed list of the problems:
    1. The computer shuts down without warning at about 30% battery.
    2. The Firewire doesn't seem to work when I try to connect my external HD.
    3. The firewire Bus data is not shown on the System Profiler.
    4. The sleep mode doesn't work; if I press the "sleep" icon, it doesn't respond to it.
    5. When I close the lid and open it again, the screen remains turned off which requires me to force shut down the computer every time. Yet, it seems that its only the screen that does not want to come back up, the unit seems operational.
    6. The sleep light indicator does not pulse when lid is closed, it stays on.
Actions taken:I have tried resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) to no avail. Have the battery update. Have reset the PRAM.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Mac Pro FireWire not working at all

    Hey guys,
I'm pretty desperate right now. My brand new Mac Pro (two days old) has suddenly stopped noticing firewire devices. I tried to troubleshoot everything and nothing was working so I just finished erasing and reinstalling OS X on the main hard drive. That didn't help. If I go into the System Profiler, and click on firewire, it takes a few seconds, and shows absolutely nothing, even though about 4 devices are plugged in (FW400, FW800) Even though they are on, even disk utility does not show them. They are basically invisible and unaccessable. Please, anyone who knows what I can do, let me know. I reset the SMC, I reset the PRAM, I've tried all I could think of, and now I am on a ten minute old install of OS X. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried running the hardware test? Put in your main system DVD, restart and hold down "D" until you get the icon. Let it run some tests to see if anything comes up bad.
It's rare, but it's not impossible you have a bum controller in there. I hope you get it running. That thing is FAST!
    Good luck.
