  • Safari will not stay logged into Facebook/Pinterest/Fitocracy/etc. after Mavericks upgrade. How to fix?

    After upgrading to Mavericks, Safari now will not stay logged into any site that requires a username/password, such as Facebook, Pinterest, Fitocracy, etc.  I can log in and browse for a minute or so, then all of a sudden it is as if I am not logged in.  As an example, Facebook will require me to log in again, remember browser, and then I get the security warning email since I have that feature activated with Facebook.  It is as if Safari completely forgets everything.  I believe it has to do with the new iCloud username/password sync function...  How does this get fixed?

    Try deleting the Safari cache.
    From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
    Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
    Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
    Quit and relaunch Safari.
    If you still have problems, try troubleshooting Safari extensions.
    From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. I
    If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
    If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
    Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Safari totally unresponsive, then crashes - how to fix?

    In the same boat as other users, and even worse:  I can't do anything in Safari at all.  The program will open, but if I try to pick any Menu items, nothing happens - I can't select History or anything else.  It's totally unresponsive.  Then, after only three or four seconds, I see spinning beachball - it spins for about 30 seconds, then the program crashes.  I get the "Safari unexpectedly quit" notice.  Over and over and over.  I tried many suggestions in other threads - removing items from the ~Library directory, etc., but to no avail.  My ICloud is not and has never been set to sync with Safari.  I'm just about out of ideas.
    As we all know I can't delete Safari and reinstall it.  I did try a download/reinstall over the existing program but no dice. I think the problem is probably a plugin, but as I can't get into any menus, I can't disable or reset anything.  Just for kicks, here's all the gobbledygook - appreciate any thoughts.  I'm on a Macbook Pro running 10.8.4.

    Uninstall SIMBL as follows. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return. A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Application Support/SIMBL
    InputManagers/SIMBL.bundle
    LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
    Log out and log back in.
    Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • Safari 3.2 crash - how I fixed mine

    Safari 3.2 seems to crash under different conditions for different users. From what I have read, the most common conditions are:
    a) incompatible third-party add-ons (e.g. PithHelmet, AcidSearch, etc);
    b) Having the option 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website' enabled in Security panel of the Preferences.
    I am using a MacBook Pro (late 2006 model). In my case, I did not have any of the third-party add-ons that were reported to be problematic. And Safari was crashing for me under two conditions:
    a) when I attempted to load any web page;
    b) immediately when I attempted to select Safari's Security panel in Preferences.
    This is what I did to fix MY particular crashing problem. I edited the 'com.apple.Safari.plist' file (found in ~/Library/Preferences/) using the Property List Editor application and created the following entry in the 'Root' dictionary:
    'WarnAboutFraudulentWebsites' of class 'Boolean' with the value 'No'
    I saved the file, started up Safari 3.2 and it no longer crashed attempting to load a page or when selecting the Security panel in Preferences. However, if I enabled the 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website' option, Safari would crash immediately. So the problem still needs to be addressed by Apple as having this option enabled for some users is definitely a problem.
    As a note, I have that option enabled on Safari 3.2 running on another Mac (a PowerBook G4) without problems.
    Property List Editor is a free app and is part of the the Apple Developer Tools that comes with your Mac OS X Install Disc. Look for the 'Xcode Tools' folder and then the 'Packages' folder. The Developer Tools are installed by running the 'DeveloperTools.pkg' installer package.
    Good luck, all!

    I'm afraid I can't see the purpose of not warning against fraudulant websites. Your typical "this website's certificate can't be verified" dialog box obviously is not appearing on those websites that crash your browser, but by the same token, the fact the flag being on causes the browser to crash DOES protect you from entering information in sites that are not valid, or coded in a valid way. If you believe the website to be a genuine website of the said company that is causing the browser to crash, rather than hack your web browser to be LESS secure, contact the said company by e-mail and tell them they need to read http://www.anybrowser.org/ on coding more secure websites that also work well with Safari. Consider the crash a feature of security that just simply has gone a little overboard in protecting you. But at least it does protect you. Granted, it is inconvenient if you failed to bookmark other websites while the browser was open, but you can always reopen the web browser and browse the history to add those bookmarks you need.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman broken by partial upgrade. How to fix and update?

    Pacman partially upgraded a system during pacman -Syu and, as a result, pacman itself is broken.
    So I'm facing two issues, the one which caused the upgrade to fail and the fact that pacman no longer works.
    I answered yes to all of the below:
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
    :: Replace kactivities with extra/kactivities4? [Y/n] y
    :: Replace lzo2 with core/lzo? [Y/n] y
    :: Replace phonon-gstreamer with extra/phonon-qt4-gstreamer? [Y/n] y
    :: Replace phonon-gstreamer with extra/phonon-qt5-gstreamer? [Y/n] y
    :: Replace polkit-qt with extra/polkit-qt4? [Y/n] y
    :: Replace shared-color-profiles with extra/colord? [Y/n] y
    :: Replace twisted with extra/python2-twisted? [Y/n] y
    All seemed well until all the downloads and verifications were finished.

    error: problem occurred while upgrading filesystem
    error: could not commit transaction
    error: failed to commit transaction (transaction aborted)
    Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    The upgrade failed because of "extract: not overwriting dir with file /var/run".
    The last line is not entirely true because I don't think the removals were rolled back.
    Since pacman depends on lzo2 I now get the error below whenever I try to launch it.
    pacman: error while loading shared libraries: liblzo2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    So I need to figure out a way to fix pacman and correct the issue that is causing the update to fail without causing even bigger problems.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions!
    Thanks.

    Your filesystem package was upgraded, you had 646 packages to upgrade.  You haven't run "pacman -Syu" in years.  Your system will be near impossible to upgrade.  Reinstall, and update regularly.
    Am I wrong?
    According to pacman.log my last successful upgrade was in April May 2014 (hardly anything upgraded so I missed it in the logs at first).
    Strangely enough, pacman -Qe reports the same filesystem version (filesystem 2014.07-1) both before and after the upgrade today.
    Unless I'm mistaken that would mean it wasn't upgraded (or it was upgraded and not rolled back when the transaction failed which wouldn't be my first guess).
    So it would appear you are wrong on both counts, headkase.
    After I forced installation of the replacement lzo the upgrade went ahead without a hitch.
    So no, the system wasn't impossible to upgrade either. Wrong there too.
    I'm not sure exactly what went wrong though. It might have all been due to lzo2 not being automatically replaced successfully. Yet I'm not sure why it would have attempted to upgrade filesystem when it failed then report the same version after the full system upgrade completed successfully.

  • Applications crashing - how to fix?

    A number of applications seem to crash mid-stream, particularly the local newspaper application.   Wasn't always this way, but more and more increasing.  Tried hard reset and that seemed to help . .  for awhile.   BACK to crashing again.   Suggesitons?

    Close all apps in the recents tray and then try the hard reset/reboot again. Perhaps you have one rouge app that is wreaking havoc. After you do this, start launching apps as needed or desired and then see of the iPad crashes again. Once it crashes, you might be able to attribute that behavior to the app that you just launched.
    Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the all of the apps. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Reboot/reset the iPad.

  • Firefox slow on new Windows install/Flash player crashes, how to fix?

    On my new windows install I found Firefox to be very slow compared to how it was before the my new Windows install.
    Opening most webpages takes way longer than it should, i excluded my internet connection being the problem as i always get 100/100 Mbps (speedtest) results.
    I already :
    -reinstalled Flashplayer, wich didnt solve the problem.
    -Did a Firefox refresh (as in: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-health-report-says-your-browser-is-slow )
    -Tried setting the ipv6 boolean (network.dns.disableIPv6) in about:config to true.
    -Disabling plugins (user installed ones)
    -Clearing flashplayer cache
    -Reinstall videocard driver
    I'm at a loss what could possibly be the problem, hopefully someone else has an idea how to solve this problem.
    Thanks in advance

    Do you ever see messages that scripts are running slowly with Stop/Continue options?
    Another common troubleshooting step for Flash on Windows Vista and newer is to disable the plugin's protected mode feature. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems. There is a new hidden setting for this:
    (A) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (B) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''flash''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (C) Double-click the '''dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode''' preference to switch its value from false to true.
    This might not take effect until all Flash has been unloaded for a few minutes, or you close Firefox.
    Before that preference was added, the way to disable protected mode was by creating or editing a settings file. The following pages/posts provide different approaches for that if it turns out to be necessary (if Flash EXE processes continue to show up in the Windows Task Manager, Processes tab, even after changing the Firefox preference):
    * Adobe support article under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
    * Manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/968190?page=5#answer-509209
    * Batch file to automate the manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/982093#answer-518078 (alternate version of Carm's batch file with a few changes by me: [https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=f7d304d92388737d&id=F7D304D92388737D!336&ithint=file,.bat&authkey=!AP2FXW2Y_3BXZyo])
    Flash needs to completely unload from memory (exiting and starting Firefox up again might help) before this takes effect.
    Any improvement?

  • I have just tried to upgrade to the latest version of itunes, and my ipad was connected to my computer at the time. The upgrade crashed part way through. I now cannot start itunes as it says MSVCR80.dll is missing. Anyone got any ideas?

    I was upgrading to the latest version of itunes, and my new ipad mini was connected to my computer at the same time, try to sync for the first time. The upgrade crashed part way through, and now itunes won't load and I get an error message saying MSVCR80.dll is missing. How do I do about reinstalling this file?

    Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • I looked on my C:\ for plugin-container.exe and deleted the file as it kept slowing down my computor, however now when I load firefox it crashes, how can I re-install this plugin to disable it properly?

    My computor had been overly slow which was not normal when looking at processes running in task manager I found plugin-container.exe to be using alot of memory. I looked online and found that this was an update of firefox which was not essential, I then looked on my C:\ drive for the application and deleted it hoping this would solve the problem as I could not find it when looking at my firefox plugins. However now when I open firefox it quickly crashes, how can I reinstall this? Do I need to reinstall firefox completely or is there a more simple solution? I have done the firefox plugin check and it can find no problems.

    Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.
    If you want to disable plugin-container, see the section on "Disabling crash protection" at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins
