6 channel audio device for STP

I need to do a temp dub on a small film and am going to attempt using STP 5.1. Can anyone recommend a 6 channel audio output device that is not expensive, yet will suffice for a simple mix.
Thanks for help!

Hey Muzak, I think you misunderstood Tony. He wants a multitrack interface to be able to monitor a surround mix.
Tony, here is a range of reasonably-priced interfaces--some Firewire, some PCI (which may or may not work in your Mac) <a href="http://www.musiciansfriend.com/rec/navigation/computer-hardware-recording -cards-audio-interfaces?N=1000013048914294967032&page=1"

  • Wanted: Multi-Channel Audio Interface for iMac & GB (USB)

I am looking for an affordable multi-channel audio interface for my iMac for use with Garageband. My goal is to playback old songs from my old computer (Atari ST) through my Yamaha gear and record the audio into GB so I can mix it. (READ: Not interested in transferring MIDI.)
My goal is to get at least 4 and ideally 6 channel/track recording in GB. I’m not sure if the multi-channel units I see, such as the Alesis MultiMix 4 or the Behringer Xenyx Q802USB send all channels to the Mac or if they mix it down to two channels first.
I’d prefer to mix all the channels in GB rather than pre-mix it. Also, I’d prefer to have 1/4” jacks; XLR would be a nice bonus. USB; since Firewire is going away and Thunderbolt is too new.
Any suggestions? I’m trying to keep this under $100. (Also, I know I can use multiple low-budget devices and aggregate them in Audio/Midi, but I do NOT want to go that route.)
    Thanks.

As you imply, keeping it below $100 makes it tough.
Generally only the two channel interfaces are close to $100.

  • How to set default audio device for java apps on Linux?

I would like to find a way to choose a particular (ALSA) audio device for java applications. How can this be done without reprogramming the application or changing the default ALSA device? I came across "sound.properties", but could not find any information how to use this file on an ALSA system.
    Thanks for any help, Mark

We can't satisfy everyone. What you want is a corner case. For most people ALSA and dmix works appropriately, and that is what esd uses by default. We cannot document and automate every configuration possible. That's up to the users.
However, if you don't want to restart gnome, try the below... I make a few assumptions, but even if they're wrong, they're hardly difficult to work around.
Just copy the /etc/esd.conf to ~/.esd.conf, make your change, then do killall esd. Presumably gnome will restart esd, and it ought to read your local config. If it doesnt, start it yourself.
Feel free to write a script that automates this, or document it on the wiki.
I have to restart Gnome to get this thing working. Other OSes *automatically* can use an alternative device. But if I change ESD, I will have to restart Gnome, no?
Well, if you try my suggestion above, no. You can restart esd yourself. And that's what all the other distros do, except with some fancy GUI.

  • How to change default audio device for gnome?

My laptop has an integrated sound card, but I lately got a USB headset (headphones+mic, which works with linux btw, I tested it with GizmoProject which lets me choose which /dev/dspXX I want): http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=U200&cpc=SCH
So, how do I change the default audio device for *all* desktop sounds to the headphones? I tried the two gnome sound properties, and when I select the headset device they let me configure it but ALSA still uses the internal audio card. Why isn't there a way to easily select which device you want for your sounds as there is for BeOS, Windows and OSX?

  • Can you use different audio devices for different apps?

I've paired my iMac with a set of Bose Companion 20's - they connect via the headphone socket. I regard these as my default audio device. However, when I work from home I need to use Lync 2011 for Mac and want to be able to use a bluetooth headset for lync enterprise voice calls (my employers chosen platform). Is it possible to use my bluetooth headset for incoming / outgoing calls when using Lync but the Bose speakers for say internet radio? If this is possible, any guidance as how to configure would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance....

After going to a particular folder and selecting a view, click the little Action Gear and select "Show View Options" and at the top check the box "Always open in xxx view" where xxx will be the view you presently have selected.
Do not check the bottom box to use this as a default or else all folders will then open this way.

  • Using External Audio Device for FCP X

    Hi,
How do I use my external audio hardware(RTA, MOTU, D01 Jünger) via firewire with FCP X?
It plays through Mac out only.
    Cheers,
    Marc

Hmmm... there is driver for all MOTU devices available. I checked on the motunation board and didn't find complaints about Lion and interfaces either. Sorry you're having this problem. This is copied from the motu site about the Lion driver:
MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X
This package (version 1.6.50450) installs updated Mac OS X drivers and software for all MOTU FireWire, USB, Hybrid, and PCI-424 audio interfaces. The CueMix FX app now supports PCI-424 systems and replaces the legacy CueMix Console app. Mac OS X version 10.5.8 or later is recommended. Supports Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). Supported MOTU products include:
    2408mk3
    24I/O
    4pre
    828mk3 (Hybrid and FireWire)
    896mk3

  • Good audio device for my electric guitar (fasttrack-ish)

    Hi All
My M-Studio fast track died yesterday (the headphone connector is sending back just one or the other channel, and the guitar input works randomly); so i have decided to get a new one.
Before buying another fasttrack, i was wondering if there is anything else that can be used on a mac pro 1.1 (either firewire or usb does not matter; all that i need is a decent device to play my electric guitar that does not cost an arm and a leg)
Basically what i want to do is to connect my device to my mac, plug the guitar in and play; and get the sound out of it instead than getting it from my mac.
The mic connector is not essential at the moment, but is a nice plus in case i decide to record mic too; the extra output also is not really essential, since i would record directly on my computer, so i do not need outputs other than one for the headphones (or for a pair of speakers on my desk).
The input that i need are basically the jack for the guitar, and would be nice to have a couple of RCA in, so i can plug my xbox 360 output, instead of plugging it into my line-in on my mac pro; the keyboard is plugged via midi or via usb, so midi ports could be useful.
I've seen various reviews of devices like the fasttrack and the mobile pre; and know for sure that they work on mac with snow leopard; then i checked the tascam but many people are still in uproar for the fact that the drivers on SL are not working as they should, so i would pass on that unless someone can confirm me that everything works fine 100% of the times (this is not windows with the driver ****, right ? :P)
There are many other options, but they work on PC and i do not want to buy something that is not 100% working for my mac pro; I use guitar rig 4, logic and garageband, plus the device gotta work as sound card, so i can route all the audio trough it and avoid to plug my headphones to the mac front port.
I am sure that many of you went trough the process already, so you have tried already various devices....i am acquainted with Windows so i do not really know what does work on a mac.
    Thanks!!!

The best sounding I/F under $300 ($249) is the Apogee One. It is the "little brother" of the Duet.
You will NEVER need an upgrade from the sound this device produces. And you can use a Mic (both dynamic and condenser) with it.

Here is a link to where you can buy it with some reviews:

  • Obtaining 7.1 Channel Audio Cable for X-Fi Plati

Can anyone tell me where I can get the 7. audio cable so that my Gigaworks S750 can work with my X-fi Platinum fully? For now, my 2 side channels aren't working.

    lytrix,
Can you describe the cable that you do have? The Gigaworks S750's come with a cable that has 3 connections on one end (green, black, orange) and four on the subwoofer end (green, black, orange, and grey). If you do not have this cable, Customer Service can get you one. -800-998-000

  • 4 channel audio interface for iMac / SL - Recommendations

    All,
it is amazing how much of my investment in audio software and hardware went south when moving to my new iMac.
Native Instruments and Steinberg saw a welcome opportunity to sunset (slaughter) some of their instruments and both seem more or less turning to sample only instruments. I am particularly angry about the cynical sell-off of Komplete 5 days before they drop three lovely instruments (which do not work in SL of course).
But today my problem is Line6 who did not manage to produce reliably working drivers and associated modelling software in six months.
Has anyone personal positive experience with a USB or Firewire audio interface on SL with the following minimal specs:
    - 2 line inputs (symmetric or not)
    - 1 high-z input
    - 2 line outputs for active monitors (symmetric preferred)
    - low latency
Nice to have: mic preamp, more line-ins, hardware monitoring
    I am using Logic 9.
I have looked into the new USB version of the Fireface400 but thats past the upper limit.

  • Can anyone recommend an audio device for Garage Band?

For the past three years I used Windows and Cubase LE with my Tascam US-122 for multitrack recording. A month ago, I finally switched to MAC (so good!) and my US-122 worked pretty good with GarageBand, except for a milisecond recording latency issue that I was almost willing to live with. Also, my US-122's headphone jack no longer worked so I decided to try the newer tascam US-144 so I could use head phones and to see if it would cure my latency issue. The headphones are ok, but now I get buzzing and hissing when I play back multi-track recordings in both GB and Cubase LE. This is so annoying I haven't even tested the latency problem. I'm ready to send back my US-144 and get something that is known to work well with the MAC OS and GB and eventually Logic Express. Any recommendations?

I "second" Hangtime's recommendation for a Firewire interface. Generally, Firewire interfaces are more reliable, although they are also usually more expensive. If you are serious about recording, and plan to migrate to Logic, it may be worth it for you to spring for a Firewire interface.
You might want to check out the selection on a major retailer's site like Sweetwater Sound. Their website is www.sweetwater.com, and they have just about everything, so it's a great place to check out what's out there. Their sales reps are also pretty knowledgeable (well, some are), but if you call them, make sure they don't sell you anything you don't want!
Budget is obviously a key factor in making a decision. If what you're after is rock solid performance, I've found RME interfaces (the Fireface 800 or the smaller Fireface 400) absolutely rock solid. Apogee's Ensemble and Duet offer very good sound quality sound for the price, but are still more than twice as much as interfaces offering similar features (but not the sound quality). For interfaces at a lower price point offering great bang for the buck, I like M-Audio and Presonus.

  • Audio interfaces for STP

Has anyone used any of these audio interfaces with soundtrack pro? I want something to monitor surround and also be able to take it out and record surround.
    Focusrite Saffire Pro 10
    Presonus Firestudio Project
    MOTU 8pre
    Thanks,

I'd go with MOTU 8pre. The sound quality is very good for the price and the drivers are probably the most stable in the business.

  • Is there any way to change the output audio device for FireFox?

    Hey,
I'm trying to output the audio from my FireFox browser to my external bluetooth speakers, and I can't figure out how to for the life of me. I'm using google play music (just made the switch from Chrome), and for some reason I can only get FireFox audio out of the system speakers. There seems to be no settings to change this in Windows or FireFox, can someone suggest a plug-in or workaround? Really don't want to go back to Chrome over some stupid issue like this.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I am pretty sure that the plug ins are responsible for this, My Compuer > Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia Properties > Audio > Sound Playback, though the menu may be different in 8.1,

  • Hard problem with audio device installing for Lenovo G430 t6600

    Dear all,
as I read about this problem from many messages in this forum, I have the same problem when install audio device for Lenovo G430. I want to write this message and hope that someone can help and show me the detail way to fix this problem and this is also to help others customers of Lenovo.
Sure that I did all the ways that messages in this forum showed to fix:
First, I downloaded hotfix - patch and Conexant Smart audio drive files which suitable with my model-type of laptop (G430, use win XP SP2), these files I downloaded from Lenovo website.
Then I uninstall all audio devices from my Laptop
install Hotfix first, and then, I install Conexant Smart audio
But, in the end I received the message: could not find the media device...blap blap and of course, my laptop keep...have no any sound
If Lenovo G430 support for Win Vistra, why my Laptop had a normal situation (all drives were installed, and the sound was good) when I bought it and the laptop run Win XP SP2. I had this problem when I re-install sound drive from the drive disk the supplier deliver to me, after this, my laptop have no sound any more!!.
So, please, if someone (and maybe the supporter-computer technician from Lenovo) can help me and other customers(who have this problem) to solve and fix  with a detail way, we will say many thanks. This problem made me feel Lenovo is a hard laptop to use.
please contact to me through email: [email protected] Thank you very much

P.S.: The firewire hub was labeled to be OS X compatible ... Is there any specific data available a firewire hub should meet so that there are absolutely no problems in OS X 10.4?

  • Can't choose audio device inputs...

I can't seem to select the desired inputs on for my audio device in STP.
One day it worked, but most others I can't configure it.
I can choose the device in the inputs tab, but it only lists the device name (AudioFire4) and not listing the different inputs available..
Is there some trick to getting this to work in STP? Everything works great in all other apps i use.. Peak, Live, Logic..
How should I be configuring Soundtrack Pro?
OS and Apps are all up to date, and I'm using an Echo AudioFire4 firewire interface..
    Macbook

I am also perplexed and frustrated with this issue. I
have tried every combination and order of set-up but
can't get my M-Audio Black Box audio interface to
show up in STP. I can record just fine in GarageBand
but the interface doesn't even appear in STP. All
software is the latest including drivers, firmware,
etc. on the interface. I am wondering if the M-Audio
is just plain glitchy? Or is STP fussy?
    Grrrr.

      Mac OS X (10.4.8)
UPDATE: After a lot of uninstalling and re-installing and plugging and unplugging (several times), I think I have stumbled upon the issue. Previously, I had the the interface plugged in through a Belkin powered USB hub. I tried plugging the interface directly into the front USB jack of the G5 and - voila - it works. I can see it and record through it in STP. Mystery solved, I guess. Could this be the problem some others have had in seeing their interfaces in STP? Good luck.
