6 minute movie taking 2gig of ram

Ok, I have finally finished my first ever movie using FC and Motion! It is 6 minutes and 40 seconds long. I exported it as a QuickTime movie and the file size is over 2 gigs. Two questions:
1. I want to produce DVD's of this little thing for people to view as prospective sponsors of the skater that the DVD is about. That being the case I want to make the best possible resolution DVD I can. I've received some advice about how to do this in an earlier question so I think I'm ok on that part. However, if I do a QT version of the project, which I thought was supposed to compress the material, can I still come back and create a nice high end DVD for the sponsors?
2. Why IS the QT movie file so large? I was hoping to email it to a friend but at 2+ gigs... Am I leaving out a step?
Thanks in advance

1. You can export your movie as many times as you want, each time with different export settings. The export settings will not change the video on your Final Cut timeline, they only affect the exported movie. So you would export once for your DVD and another time, with different settings, for your web video.
Exporting to QuickTime does not necessarily compress your video. If you select QuickTime conversion you will then be able to select among a number of Options (codecs, frame rates, compression settings, etc.) that should result in smaller file sizes. I'd suggest H.264 for videos you want to post on the web or send via email; the compression quality is really good and the file sizes are correspondingly smaller.
Here's a good, basic tutorial from Ken Stone on exporting for the web (or email) --> QuickTime Pro - QT Movies from FCP
2. Assuming you are using DV, this is about the right size if you exported to QuickTime Movie without changing any of the Options. DV takes ~13GB per hour of video.

Firefox has work flawlessly for months but all of a sudden it overloads my ram when I start it, after a minute the ram gets flushed and everything works fine again. Last night I reset Firefox and everything was back to normal, but today its doing the ram hog thing again so resetting it is only a temporary fix.
FYI I don't have any add ons or plugins installed and the only software I've installed in the past month is VLC
Could this be a malware problem or something to do with VLC?

  • 8 hours to render 30 minute movie

I must be doing something wrong. I'm assuming it shouldn't take 8 hours to render a 30 minute movie. iMovie version is 7.1.4 I used share with web browser so it would be a "large" movie. Does anyone know why it's taking so long??? It's driving me crazy I loved the old version 4.0.1 and that'll be my next question

    1) Is your source material high definition? If not, rendering in Large is not going to improve SD very much.
    2) LARGE movies in MobileMe look great but they take a great deal of time to load when watching (and a great deal of time to upload.
    3) I recommend that you make a short five minute movie. (For example you can control-click/Duplicate on your project name and make a duplicate project. Then delete everything but the first five minutes.) Then Share it to either iTunes or the Media Browser in Large and Medium. It should take no more than 10 minutes to do the rendering. Then share this five minute movie in Large and Medium to Mobile Me. It may take 30 minutes or more, but it is already rendered, so this is all web transfer time.) Now watch it in both Medium and Large. You will notice that the Large movie takes about 5 minutes to load before it starts playing. The medium movie should start playing almost immediately. Then decide which which way to go for your 30 minute movie. The upload time will be 6 times or more the upload time for your 5 minute movie, and the rendering time will be approximately 6 times the rendering time for you 5 minute movie.

I made a 3-minute movie with my iphone 4S. When I attempt to share it via email or message I get a message that says it is too long, that I should try to make a clip. Of course I had rather send the whole thing. What are the possibilities? I think my music and likely my videos and pictures are in the cloud.

  • I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite.  I want to create one movie that includes these short movies that I can then either burn to a DVD or show in iMovie's Theater.  How can I do it?

I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite.  I want to combine those short movies into one movie that I can loop and burn on a DVD or show in iMovie Theater.  How can I do it?  The movies are now shared to iTunes.

Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business.

  • In attempt to burn blu-ray, I get QuickTime error 0.  Takes hours to export a 7 minute movie from timeline, then get notice it fails.  What's going on here?

New problem just started 24 hours ago.  When I try to export from the time line to create a QuickTime file, a 7 minute movie on time line takes 3 hours to export and then the export fails, where as a few days ago, that export would take about 10 minutes at most.  I get the same failure notice when I try to share to blu-ray, DVD, or Vimeo.  Tried to use compressor, no such luck as compressor failed to make a .mov file.  I get QuickTime error 0 message about 5 minutes into trying to share to Blu-Ray now.   Does anyone know what is going on here?  I'm running latest update of Snow Leopard on an intel Mac Pro and the latest update to Final Cut Pro X.  I've also installed QT 7.6.6 to use in creating time lapse movie files.

Same problem here, too. Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 on OS 10.6.8. However, it is only doing it on ONE of my projects. A 4-second test project burned successfully.
I'm  actually going to use iDVD to burn copies for a few people, so I only need the movie file from FCPX.
Would someone please post best export settings for use on a DVD? In FCPX, the project is  in HD (1080p) with all media optimized to ProRes 442. I know it will have to be down-sampled to DVD resolution, but I've always been curious to know what settings will result produce the best possible quality in DVD resolution.
    Thank you!
    Bart

  • When I try to export from iMovie '11 I get repeated messages that the project is too big. Why? Is there a workaround? (I have already cut a 40-minute movie into three chunks...)

When I try to export from iMovie '11 I get repeated messages that the project is too big. Why? Is there a workaround? (I have already cut a 40-minute movie into three chunks... the first exported to iDVD ok, but the next one of 15 minutes balked for the same reason -- too long...)

    I wish I had a mac :-P
Sadly, this is Windows machine so I dont have a non-iOS version of iMovie.  I have 2 ideas left.  The first is xfering the project to my iPhone 4 and trying to export it there (if that works, awesome but geez apple the iPad 2 is way more powerful than the iphone 4.. youd think I wouldnt even have to attempt this).  The 2nd idea is to start at the end of my movie and delete clips and sounds backwards, trying to export each time to find whatever clip is causing the issue (when the movie was 5 minutes it mixed no probem, so I only need to go that far).
    Wish me luck?
Also, is anyone else besides me and the 5 dudes in the other threads having this issue??  Speak up, guys - Apple cant a fix a problem they dont know about.

  • Is 2gigs of ram the new standard?

I own a macbook pro 15" core duo with 1 gig of ram. I'm wondering if I will benefit from upgrading to 2gigs of ram. Is 2gigs the new 1gig?

Absolutely. If you have any plans on running Parallels with Windows XP or anything else, 2GB of RAM is necessary, in my opinion. 1GB does the job well, on a PC for a Win XP machine. However, for "flashy" Mac OS X and its video/picture editing, DVD burning, fun-loving times, 2GB is highly recommended nowadays. With Leopard's new shiny dock and other features, an extra gig of RAM will definitely come in handy as well. Check out www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com, or other retailers for RAM much cheaper than what Apple sells it for, and sometimes of better quality. Just be sure to match the RAM type (DDR2 SO-DIMM) and the bus speed (can't recall, 667 MHz maybe?) EXACTLY to your system's requirements.

  • 28 minutes movie too big for DVD!!!

    Hi all
I have a 28 minutes movie in IMovie that I'm trying to burn on a DVD. Problem is size since the file is over 2G!!
Can't seem to find a way to shrink this file and since it seems I should be able to burn at least a 1 hour movie on a DVD, how to I do this ?
    Thanks

Be sure that your settings are for Best Quality and not Best Performance.

  • How do you fit a 40 minute movie on a cd?

question: i have a 40-minute movie (.mov) that i can fit on to a dvd, but the client wants it on a cd rom since a lot of the employees are unable to view dvds. how do you reduce the file so that the quality is still acceptable and is small enough to fit on a cd?
    any advice would be appreciated.
    merci

We do this every week for our church, and the sermon is usually about 43 minutes long. Once exported, just burn it to a CD. Your users will need to have QuickTime to watch it.
Here's what we do to export from FCE, and the resulting file is about 70 MB for 484 x 272. If you want a larger video, you can make it twice the size, and increase the data rate to 816 kbps.
    Export using QuickTime conversion:
Video settings: H.264, 29.97 fps, Key Frames Automatic, Restrict to 204 kbps (for 484 x 272), optimized for download, Frame reordering checked, Encoding Best Quality, size 484 x 272.
Sound settings: AAC, Mono (if stereo, double the data rate), 44.100 kHz, Render Quality Best, VBR Constrained, 48-54, kbps.
That will get you started. Depending on what sort of material you have in the video, you may want to raise the data rate (a CD will hold 700 MB, so you have plenty of space to play with). Try a one minute clip first to see how it comes out before you export the whole thing.
And yes, three hours (depending on your machine) may be what it takes. Our videos usually take less than two hours on a Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • I have a 6 minute movie, I have it set to loop will it fill up the whole dvd when I burn it?

I have a 6 minute movie, I have it set to loop will it fill up the whole dvd when I burn it?

Yes, but why does this matter?

  • Why does my 40 minute movie become a 7 hour video in compressor?

I've made a final cut HD movie about 41 minutes in length.  When I send it to compressor I have to wait many hours while Compressor does it's magic.  The reason for the unreasonable time is that it is compressing a 7 hour plus file rather then the 40 minute movie sent to Compressor.  When the compressed file is sent to DVD Studio Pro I have to drag a 7 hour timeline down to 40 minutes of actual video/audio files.  In Final Cut the sequence time line is only 40 minutes long and I can not find why this relatively short movie becomes so long when dispatched to Compressor.  Any solutions?

Open your project and hit Shift Z. See whether there is any file beyond 40 minutes on the Time Line,
Take the Range tool and do a selection around your movie in the Time Line, In Share, choose Master File and save.
Open that file in Quick Time and it will be 40 minutes. Bring that file into Compressor for whatever encoding job you need.
    Good luck.
    Riss

  • Taking an hour to create thumbnails for 5 minute movie ! Any Fix ?

When I import a short 5 minute mp4 file why does imovie take so long just to create the thumbnails - this alone is making the imovie unusable for me - so much for being the quick and easy movie editor !

If you don't need thumbnails, try iMovie 06.
With iMovie 06 you can edit your movie instantly after importing it.
iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners.
