6 minutes boot up time

I recently put my mac pro into target mode to help transfer some files from it over the firewire faster. Even since, on boot up, the apple comes up, the clog rotates a few times, then it goes to a blue screen. It sits at this blue screen for a long time and then finally, it loads. There is very abnormal considering the computer used to boot in under a minute.
Thinking that I messed up the drive, I re-formated and reinstalled everything. Unfortunutely, that hasn't solved anything. Once the computer gets running, all seems to be working fine. What should I do?

It has to do with:
, the apple comes up, the clog rotates a few times, then it goes to a blue screen. It sits at this blue screen for a long time and then finally, it loads.
Disk Warrior is almost the only good disk repair program. FSCK is just Disk Utility but from the command line in verbose/single user mode (SUM stops at prompt to let you run commands and has instructions for fsck).
Startup Disk control panel. Long bootups happen when it 'forgets' or NVRAM is corrupt and needs to be reset. Installing will of course set the new volume as startup, but the Utility menu on the DVD before you begin gives you access to DU and to Startup Disk.
Having 10.5.2+ on another drive is normal, common, and avoids booting from DVD that will have older versions of utility. And insures you have a working system. On Windows you don't, but on a Mac, I never install updates w/o backup, without running DW and without repairing the boot drive. I also apply OS updates from that drive to main drive rather than to a "live" system which is also safer. I think most that have success upgrading the OS and their system do pretty much the same type of maintenance.
Along with Time Machine, using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to keep a working copy of their system on another drive.
Vista, I rely on the DVD and CompletePC Backup etc, but not on Mac OS.

  • Help! Macbook Pro painful 6 minute boot up time!

I've owned my Macbook Pro since new and it came factory installed with OSX 10.4
I decided to update to Leopard and used the 10.5.6 disc formatted the hard drive fresh and after installing boot time was around 6 minutes. I tried everything, updating OS, reseting pram all sorts but still slow boot up.
Then i thought maybe updating to Snow Leopard may resolve this issue but unfortunately still the same problem 6 minutes to boot!
I don't know a lot about the console but i rebooted at 20.12 pm and here is the report:
I noticed at 20.13 some weird happenings with the internal apple modem i hope somebody can shed some light on it.
Also between 20.14 and 20.18 'Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet ' 4 minute pause??? whats that because of?

Please help its driving me nuts!!!

    Hi there
Can anyone give some advice on this issue, please!
My Macbook boot time is over 10 minutes!!!
    How I got there ?
I shut down by mistake the computer while it was doing firmware update 2 weeks ago (end of June 2010). This led to a booting time over 10 minutes every time I restart the computer.
    What I have try
    1. Re install the update from Software update ( it show that is installed OK now) –make no difference
    2. Download from Apple web site RESTORE FIRMWARE CD
Try to install it following the instructions – holding the power button right after the start while the indicators lights start flashing 3 time long 3 times short and then the computer will boot from RESTORE FIRMWARE CD - it did not work – no lights were flashing , the CD could goes into cd drive but do nothing. (Other folks had the same problem)
Other than this computer seems to work great after the slow restart.
BTW hard drive has for Mac 100 GB free space and for Win 80GB
4GB 2GHZ My MacBook 5.2 (2009) Snow Leopard 10.6.4 has a single user under MacOSX and has a Windows 7 via bootcam

  • Is 1 minute boot up time slow?

    Hi guys
I have an early 2011 edition Macbook Pro 13" 2.3Ghz. I have upgraded to Lion and now it takes about a minute to boot up. Before Lion, it was around 38-odd seconds...
Should I take it to the Apple Store. The laptop generally works fine but bootup is as slow as a Windows machine now!
    Cheers guys

    Try this first:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
If you add applications to the Login Items list and have the Resume features enabled and shutdown with a number of open applications, then you can expect a normal slowdown in startup from on to Desktop.

  • I have read the various threads regarding slow boot up times, on my 2009 MBP it takes 1 minute to get a usable interface but without doing anything else the HD is active for a further minute, is this reasonable ?

My MBP after the Lion upgrade takes 1 minute to put something usable on screen and without doing anything else the HD is active for another minute.
I have visited the Genius bar where they went through some maintenance routines and permissions repaired etc but the boot up time remains the same.
I have cleared the cache as suggested in other threads but is this the best I can expect as with SL the computer booted up in about 30 seconds ?
I recall reading there may be unwanted  programs loading at boot up time but I do not know where to look in the system to check.

Thanks for the reply, I have followed your suggestion but unfortunately it has not improved the boot time, do you have any further advice you could offer me ?
I use my MBP for working on and storing my photographic images following my Photoshop adjustments, these individual image files are between 50 to 60Mb, I was reading about OSX self defragmenting files below 20Mb, these files are not intended as start up items but do you think storing approx 200Gb of these files could be having so effect ? I am a fromt end user so my limited knowledge is restricted to repairing permissions etc. I am probably clutching at straws but it be better to store these images on an external HD in addition to my backups on other HD's.
    Thanks.

  • 6 minute boot times

Recently my MBP running Leopard 10.5.2 has been experiencing 6 minute boot times. The first screen with the apple lasts about 1 minute with the spinning circle and then the machine goes to a light blue screen and just sits for about five minutes. After about 5 minutes, the machine boots fine and all operations are fine.
So far, I've reset the PRAM and ran the "fix permissions" and "fix disk" from my leopard install dvd. The machine still takes 6 minutes to boot.
So I went a step further and completely wiped the machine and did a clean install. After running all of the Mac updates the machine began the 6 minute boot. Is this normal? Are the rest of you finding the same results? Below is my console output from a boot, notice the time differential between 11:08:13pm and 11:12:16pm. Something is not right there. I hate going to the Genius bar, everyone I've ever dealt with there has been anything but genius.
Any and all help would be appreciated. My machine is still under warranty so if anyone thinks it maybe hardware related, please chime in.

It looks like a hardware problem. Perhaps FireWire related.
Do you have any FW devices on the computer? If so, see what happens when you unplug them.
I would also unplug everything that you do not need and see what happens.
That one message about waiting for IOKit to be quiet is suspect.
If you have a separate IO card for FW, that might be the problem.
Also, you can enter the following Terminal command
    dmesg
and get a better reading of the entire boot process
You seem to have done everything else most of us would consider important, and if you must reinstalled Leopard I would suspect some kind of hardware problem, something "flaky" or marginal.
My boot times are under a minute on all three boxes

  • Re- 3-4 Minute Boot Time Solution

With regards to the above mentioned thread that appears in the stickies. I too suffered with the long boot up times from a cold boot and disabling usb storage support in bios, as mentioned in the thread did solve that problem, BUT on my particular system switching off storage support also switches off usb 2.
I'm using the 1.5 bios at the moment but I have tried a number of the different 1.6 and 1.7 beta bioses, non of which help in any way. Does anyone know how to get the usb 2 option switch to show in the selection screens ?

For the past 10 days I've been struggling to find a solution to the following problem.  I have found the solution and wanted to share with all of you.
    The Porblem.
After the BIOS finishs POSTing the screen would turn black and it would sit there for aprox 3-4 minutes before actually booting the OS.
This problem was fixed in BIOS version v1.7.

  • IPhone 4 - phone blacks out for 20-30 minutes at a time

Is anyone else having a problem with the phone "crashing" to a black screen for about 30 minutes? This happened twice so far. Once when I had hung up from a phone call and the 2nd time when I tried to unlock it. It's happened twice in the last 30 days. The first time I had hung up from a call and it went black. When it came back around on it's own about 30 minutes later it re-booted itself - the apple appeared on the screen. The second time it happened, it was fully charged, I went to unlock it and it went black. It mysteriously came back to life about 20 minutes later when I arrived home and plugged it into the charger. It didn't re-boot this time, it came on again as if it were never off.
Any thoughts on this? Maybe something is misfiring? I haven't dropped it or anything like that, so that is why I am wondering what seems to be happening..
    thanks!

You can boot into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there, use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your hard drive. If the drive can't be repaired, then you know that you need a new hard drive.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Sudden increase in boot-up time (OSX Lion, MacBook Pro)

    Hi all,
    I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, with the following specs;
    OSX Lion
    Intel i7 2.8GHz (dual core)
    8GB RAM
    256GB SSD HDD
    Intel HD graphics
The issue that I have been having is a sudden, unexplained increase in boot-up time. Yesterday and for the past two years, my MBP took circa 15 seconds to boot up, but today it has been taking approximately 5 minutes. I have the latest software update.
My hard drive space is running low; I only have 4GB of space left, could this be a contributing factor?
When I switch on the laptop, it get to the picture of the Apple logo, without the spinning gear below, hangs there for approximately 4 minutes, and then eventually continues to the user log-in screen.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Boot up time

Good morning all, i need the community support to find out if what is happening to my MB is normal or not.
It takes about 1 minute and 30 seconds for my MB Pro (with the below specs) to boot up. I only have Avast, Gmail notifier and Tunnelblick starting up when i turn it on, nothing else. I have around 320 Gigas of free disk space and also the 16 Megas of RAM.
Is it normal to take so long? This used to be such a fast booting machine, but now it is slow (only at start up) and with no virus or any other malware detected i don't know what to make of it. Also, lately the Wi Fi connection , also at start up seems to always be looking for a connection although it is always available. A simple on/off action solves it, but still, is it a prelude for something worse to come?
Thanks to all for the support.

    Hello,
I have uninstalled Avast and it improved around 15 seconds, now it takes 1 minute and 15 seconds to boot up. Below is the report from Etrecheck.

  • Boot up time on the Playbook

Why does it take 5 minutes to start my playbook?

Hi lovebb3 and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
Boot up times for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ can vary based on how much free space is available and how many applications are installed.
    Thanks.

  • Significant Boot Up Times (Cold Start)

a bit of time ago, i installed boot-camp beta, had a partition installed, and removed such partition since i found that functionality of parallels would suffice my needs.
    however...
since i removed such partition (thru bootcamp assitant mind you) i have had some really sifnigicant boot up times... my last boot was about 2 minutes to the log-in screen... it used to be around 30 seconds or less...
help me people! i am trying to avoid the re-install of the OS.

All you shou have to do is reset the PRAM. Turn off your computer. Unplug the power cord. Take out the battery. Hold down the Power button for 5 seconds. Put the battery back in. Plug it up. Turn it on. This should cure the long start up time.

  • Boot up times for CC

Why does it take so DAMNED long for all of the CC products to load up? I am waiting nearly 45-90 seconds for anything to load up. ooo.. least I mention I am on a brand new build of an Alienware R4 12 core, 32 gig with a monster GeFore Titan 6 gig card ($1000 card)
All of my CS6 library would boot in less than 15 seconds.

Normal is such a subjective word. My MBP boot up time varies a bit depending upon whether it is a cold boot or a quick restart. With Leopard I've noticed that my boot times have speeded up a bit over Tiger. That said, how fast you boot has huge variables in it. How much front end loading are you doing to the OS (how may add ons are being loaded at boot, such as Palm software, et al), how easily your MBP connects to the network and/or internet. Do you have programs that launch at boot? How much RAM you have is a factor. How fast your hard drive is is a factor. A fresh MBP out of the box probably boots pretty darn fast. But we tend to smoke them pretty quick. The point is, there's no definitive answer to your question. Between my wife's MBP and mine, mine boots a tad quicker, but then I'm not the software engineer in the family. Mine boots in about a minute or less

  • Boot up times - what is normal? (My old MBP is faster than new one)

    I have two MacBook Pros, one is the latest model (2.4GHz / 15" / 2GB RAM / 160GB HDD / 256MB GeForce with LED monitor) and the other is about a year old (2.33GHz / 15" / 2GB RAM / 120GB HDD / 256MB ATI).
I have performed an erase and install of Leopard on both.
The new 2.4GHz takes 40 seconds to load from when I press the power button to login screen, whereas the older 2.33GHz takes about 25 seconds.
Could this be because of the different hardware specs - like bigger hard disk? Or will the boot up time improve gradually as the machine is still new?
I really do notice the difference, as the extremely fast boot up time was one of the best things about my old MBP. Please note that I tested both without any peripherals connected and with virtually the same programs installed. However, Leopard was installed on the older MBP from the retail CD. But on the new machine, I installed with the included non-retail Leopard install disc (not that this should make a difference).
How long does yours take? Is there any way to improve this without reinstalling Leopard? Thanks in advance.

Normal is such a subjective word. My MBP boot up time varies a bit depending upon whether it is a cold boot or a quick restart. With Leopard I've noticed that my boot times have speeded up a bit over Tiger. That said, how fast you boot has huge variables in it. • Slow boot up time on new Macbook Air

I just got the new Macbook Air a day ago and have already experienced significantly slow boot up time. It takes about 3-5 minutes to get to the log in screen. I know when it was released, it was boasted that it only took seconds to start up after being turned off. Any idea on what I could do to change this or what the issue is?
Also, I just switched from a PC so have very limited knowledge on the Macbooks.

    Try Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
