6 year old T23 laptop

I would like to formatt my T23  2647 ENU but it is in such a mess I cannot seem to get a floppy disk Recovery or a Windows Recovery CD to give me the right instructions for FDISK or format.
I continually get Setup and then "Please wait while Setup copies files to your hard disk.  I now have at least 8 versions of windows at the start - NONE of which I want!  All I want to do is to be able to format the hard disk and start WINXP Pro again.
I can get into A: but I do not know how to proceed from there to get to the C: to be able to format and partition.  Is anyone willing and able to help me with very explicit instructions.  As you can see I am obviously a computer fool with no logic at all.  Many thanks.

As Both the iBook and the MacBook were made during 2006 it is worth knowing which Book you have in order to max out the OS, RAM, etc. I have a 6 year old MacBook which can run 10.6.8 while as Niel points out an iBook 6 years old can run only up to 10.5.8.

  • Windows 8.1 slow on 5 year old Dell Laptop

I have a 5 year old DELL XPS laptop (32 bit) with 3 GB of RAM...
I run windows 8.1 , I see that there are certain peculiar problems with 8.1 on my machine....
    1) When I shut down my machine, it could take upto 3-4 (or maybe more) to shut down competely.
    2) When I switch my laptop on from Sleep, it takes quite a long time (2-3 minutes) to show up sign in screen, and after sign in, it could take upto 2 minutes to show my desktop/start screen.
    3) The boot up time is also significantly more than I expected it to be!
Overall on a 5 year old machine, windows 8.1 feels sluggish , even on a laptop with 3 GB memory. Iam not sure if this means some of the older motherboards are probably not as compatible with windows 8.1 or my hard disk has slowed down
In any case, Iam unhappy using windows 8.1

Dozens of 9F BSODS.  Please upload the DMPS
We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
WE NEED AT LEAST TWO DMP FILES TO SPOT TRENDS AND CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If
you dont know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.
To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.
    The procedure:
    * Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
    * Zip up the copy (compress them)
*Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or"Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.
Link for how to  upload below.

    To ensure minidumps are enabled:
    * Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
    * Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
    * Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
    * Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
    * Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
    * OK your way out.
    * Reboot if changes have been made.
Please also run MSinfo32 and upload the output as well.
To run MSinfo32 please go to start>run>MSinfo32
Go to "file" "save" and upload the saved file with the DMPS

  • Did You also bought macbook retina 13 and feel that your 3 years old laptop is faster?

    Hello,
I change my samsung serie 9 for macbook 13 retia. Its my first apple and I regret very much. Unfortunately, I had to replace samsung to another laptop because they 3 times changed LCD matrix and every 2 month later have defects.
Also, at least, you feel ripped off by Apple? My 3 year old HP laptop with an old processor is processed graphics faster than the macbook. I do not understand how they can such cheat people and sell something that goes back the pleasure of working a few years back.
Is there some option to change graphics setting and remove lagging for intel hd 4000?

Unfortunately, the HD 4000 will have some trouble if you are running at a resolution other than 1440x900.  Even on basic web pages... if you try to scroll quickly, you will see some stuttering.  They really should have upgraded the 13" Retina with the new Haswell processors (which have a significant bump in GPU performance) when they upgraded the Airs.  The 13" Retina really needed that power more than the Air did... although they were able to increase battery life on the Air.  With respect to processing power, the Retina falls in line with just about every machine using the same processor...  so it's not slow in that area.  The mediocre HD 4000 just holds it back a little with respect giving you fluid performance at non-standard (and sometimes even with the standard) resolutions.  I've pretty much gotten used to it.  It doesn't really impact actual performance and I'd much rather look at that beautiful display.

  • My girlfriend has a 4 year old mac book, and I am going to buy her a new sleeve for it, what would the inches likely to be? (she is away, and I can't check on her laptop)

The question says it all. I found a laptop sleeve, but I don't know what the average size (in inches) of a 4 year old macbook. Is it about 10 or 12"?

Correct.   All MacBooks ever made only came in 13" screen size models.

  • Hi, my Macbook says its connected to the internet, but it's not working.  It's about 2 years old and has been fine up until now.  Its the same internet provider and I have a work PC laptop that is connecting fine.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Liz

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro won't connect to the internet, although it says it is connected.  The laptop is about 2 years old and up until now has worked fine.  My work PC laptop is connecting to the internet fine so I know it can't be the connection.   I've checked for Adware/Malware (just in case) via safemac and that all seems fine.
    I'm running OSX 10.8.5.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Liz

Believe it or not, that article helped me find a temporary solution. After reading it I realized that the problem did have to do with my DNS settings. I had taken the DNS settings that my ISP gives me when I dial up and plugged them into the configuration for my AirPort card. This apparently caused a problem because, although my wireless network is always on, it's not always connected to the internet. So those DNS settings were invalid most of the time.
I found that as long as I leave the area for DNS servers blank, the computer logs in normally. This further confirms my suspicion that something was trying to access the internet at login. I guess as long as I don't specify any DNS servers, the computer realizes it doesn't have an internet connection through my AirPort card.
So I just created two network locations: one for when my network is connected to the internet and one for when it isn't. In the first, I kept my original DNS settings because they work as long as I have an internet connection. In the second I did not specify any DNS servers. This seems to work fine, but I'd still like to know what is trying to access the internet at login. I've disabled the automatic update feature in all my programs that have it, but that doesn't seem to help the slowdown at login. Does anyone know how I could figure out what program is trying to access the internet?

  • I need a new inverter cable for my MacBook (5.5 years old).  Can I get it replaced cheaply, or should I buy a new laptop?

Hi!  I have a 5.5-year-old Macbook4.1, and I've been having problems with the display.  I googled the problem and found out that I've got a wonky inverter cable.  Apparently, the part itself is relatively cheap, but the labor (which involves taking nearly the whole laptop apart) means that the repair is expensive.  The quote I got (in Germany, where I live) is 200 euros.
My laptop has been functioning just fine besides the display problem, but since it's already so old, it seems to make sense to buy a new laptop rather than repairing this one.  However, someone told me that I should contact Apple first and see if they might cut me a deal on the repair, since I'm an existing customer and they'd want to keep me happy. I tried doing this through the Apple Support site, but I'd have to pay $50 to do that, which seems to defeat the purpose.  Going to an Apple store is also prohibitively expensive, since there aren't any very close to me.
So my question is this.  Does anyone see any reason why I shouldn't buy a new laptop?  The one I would probably end up buying is about $550 (not a Mac), so it's more money than I'd pay for the repair, but...you know.  Sunk costs, and all that.  I'd be appreciative of any opinions!
Sidenote: in case anyone doubts my diagnosis, here's a description of the problem.  When my screen is open, I can see a very faint picture on the display, but the screen is pretty much dark.  When I slowly tilt the screen as if to close it, the picture suddenly comes back.  So when the laptop is open at any angle more than about 45 degrees, the display is dark.

    go on give it a go! what have you got to lose;

  • My current laptop is about 3 years old. Got a virus and had to wipe it clean. Now my IPod touch 2nd generation won't recognize this computer as the one it was originally assigned to.  what do I need to do to safeguard my tunes on the Ipod touch.

My current laptop is about three years old and got a virus.  Had to wipe it clean.  Now my Ipod Touch-2nd generation is not recognizing it as the primary original computer and says it is registered on another computer.  What can I do to safeguard my library of songs on the Ipodtouch.  Any suggestions?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Laptop not even a year old and the power cord is stripping really bad and barely working

My toshiba laptop is not even a year old and the part of the cord closest to my computer is becoming really stripped. I noticed that it got very hot during pc use, I just assumed that was normal, but I'm starting to think that this heat made the rubber very soft and caused the cord to strip. I guess my question is, do you think toshiba will replace this or will they just say that it was my fault that it happened?

You can either use a cloud service like Google Drive, or use the built in Verizon Cloud Backup, or you could plug the phone into a computer and use it like a USB drive and copy the photos from there to the PC.  Your contacts are backup up through Google if you've been saving contacts to your Google account, otherwise Verizon has a backup on the phone as well and when you restart the phone after wipe you can select either or both accounts to restore from.
To factory Reset:  Go to Settings (pull down notification bar click on gear top right corner).  Then go to Back up and Reset.  At the bottom is Factory data reset.  Press that then press reset phone.  It WILL be completely wiped, but it will keep the current OS version.  It'll be like you just bought it.

You need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or newer to sync the iPhone 5; this may require buying a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store. OS upgrades aren't covered by the warranty.

  • My laptop is having trouble downloading and playing rentals from the iTunes store, I get a little way into the film and it stops playing and will not download any further. This has happened on two separate occasions, my laptop is under a year old?

I get a little way into the film (just 4 minutes this time!) and it stops playing or downloading. The remaining download time changes continually and will say anything from 6 minutes to 11 hours! My laptop shouldn't be the problem as it is under a year old and I haven't experierienced any other running problems with it... I hope I will not be charged for the film !!

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.
